The gasket is an essential element between the main muffler and the resonator. Since all parts of the exhaust system become very hot, the gasket is made of heat-resistant materials.

If, when replacing a resonator or muffler, a gasket is not inserted between them, then the joint will not be as tight as possible. In addition, when driving on uneven roads, the two elements will rub against each other and quickly fail.

There is no need to worry about the procedure for replacing the gasket: it has a convenient shape and is placed on the element pipe with one movement of the hand:

  1. Attach the gasket to the resonator flange.
  2. Tighten 4 bolts.
  3. Make sure the insert is kept level.
  4. Tighten the bolts until they stop, without overtightening them.

Replacing rubber bands

The VAZ 2110–2112 muffler is attached to the bottom of the car with special rubber hangers. The elastic bands have minimal elasticity, so they can ensure reliable fixation of the mechanism. Usually two rubber bands are used - one is placed at the exhaust port, the other at the compartment with the resonator.

To change the suspension rubber bands, you need to place some kind of support (boards or bricks) under the device to fix its position at the maximum height. After this, the old rubber bands are removed. If necessary, the hooks on the bottom, on which new rubber bands are put on, can be cleaned of dirt and carbon deposits. After which the muffler is easily attached with hooks to the new rubber hangers. The suspensions are removed one by one from the front of the car to the rear.

What to do if the muffler is knocking

Knocking is one of the most common problems with silencers on the VAZ of the tenth family. Mufflers can knock only in two cases: when, while driving, they touch the body of the gas tank or swing so that they hit the body.

The reactive muffler is designed in the form of several (from two to four) resonating chambers of various lengths, through which one or more perforated pipes pass. The operating principle of this type of muffler is based on the addition of sound waves until they destroy each other. But such mufflers only dampen certain frequencies of noise.

A combined muffler consists of resonant and dissipative chambers, while a direct-flow muffler consists of a single pipe that directs the flow of exhaust gases through all chambers. The advantage of the latter is low back pressure.

A labyrinth muffler consists of separate inlet and outlet pipes and several chambers in which the flow of gases moves randomly, which makes it possible to effectively reduce the sound level. The downside of such mufflers is that more resistance is created, therefore, engine thrust is reduced. But for passenger cars, where low noise levels and passenger comfort are a priority, this type of muffler is best suited.

How to replace the main muffler on a VAZ 2110–2112 with your own hands

Before starting work, you need to make sure that you have all the necessary tools and auxiliary materials at hand:

  • set of wrenches;
  • a screwdriver with a flat and thin blade;
  • WD-40 liquid;
  • Bulgarian;
  • new bolts;
  • soft fabric.

The procedure for dismantling work

To remove the muffler, you will again have to drive the car into the inspection hole. When parking the car, you need to make sure that the wheels are securely locked (it is better to engage first gear and raise the handbrake).

Removal is carried out according to the following scheme:

  1. The front part of the mechanism is secured with bolts. If you can’t unscrew them right away, then you need to spray WD-40 on the fasteners and wait 10 minutes until the grease is absorbed. In the event that the bolts are so badly rusted that they cannot be unscrewed, you will have to connect the grinder to the work and cut off the fasteners.
  2. After this, the graphite sealing ring is removed.
  3. Next, you can remove the rear part of the muffler from the suspension rubber bands.

Installation procedure for a new muffler

After which it is recommended to clean the muffler mounting points on the underbody. On old cars, they become so covered with dirt or rust that it is impossible to secure the new plug well without first cleaning it.

  1. First, hang new rubber bands on the hooks and secure the back of the device to them.
  2. Hang the new element and secure a new graphite gasket at the junction of the two pipes.
  3. Then hang the front part of the muffler on the bracket and secure it with new bolts.
  4. Check the reliability of all fastenings by loosening the mechanism with your hands. If the product only slightly vibrates, then we can say that the installation was done with high quality.

How to change an additional muffler

The additional muffler on the VAZ of the tenth family is not attached to the bottom of the car. It is connected to the inlet pipe using ties (clamps). Accordingly, to replace the additional muffler, you need to remove these clamps:

  1. First, the main mechanism is dismantled.
  2. Then the clamp nut is lowered.
  3. Use a screwdriver to open the clamp and move it down the tube.
  4. The additional muffler swings and is removed from the pipe.

Due to the reduced length of the can, the manufacturer had to lengthen the hooks to secure the muffler. Compared to other manufacturers, a pipe of the smallest cross-section is used; bends further narrow the pipe to 32 mm in outer diameter. Rust has already appeared in places where the paint is damaged. The inside of the muffler uses a perforated twisted sheet with welding points. The slightly extruded stamping of the manufacturer AG is barely visible on the muffler body. A label with a list of manufactured products is taped to the jar. Not a word about the guarantee.

"Izhora muffler" 135884

By design, the muffler is a simple three-chamber reactive type muffler. Accordion folds formed in the places where the pipes were bent. The soft side hook fastening is welded to the wall of the can on only one side - there is a high risk that it will be deformed during transportation. There are some stuck welding splashes on the surface of the can.

This muffler is heavier than the second model with index -01 due to the increased thickness of the pipes. Unfortunately, no other information about the differences between the two models could be found even on the manufacturer’s website. The packaging indicates that there are two types of mufflers: reinforced and aluminized. But it was also not possible to find any indications of which muffler model each type belongs to. There are no complaints about the appearance of the product: the bends of the pipes are smooth, the welding is done carefully. Minor comments may arise regarding the side hook-fastening - it is attached to the can only on one side and can easily bend during transportation. No warranty information available.

Replacing pants

The exhaust pipe, also called pants (due to its appearance), is attached to the manifold using studs and nuts. Its fixation with the neutralizer is carried out by a spring-loaded connection.

  1. Remove the exhaust pipe, paying special attention to its attachment to the manifold. Studs are used here, not bolts. They are screwed into the manifold, and connecting nuts are screwed onto them.
  2. If the pin is damaged, it will be extremely difficult to replace it. Therefore, it is important to try to keep the old one intact and safe.
  3. Treat the nuts with WD40, a product we all know. This will allow you to avoid using excessive force and keep the studs intact. If that doesn't work, the studs are drilled out. The process is complex, lengthy, and requires experience and skill.
  4. There is a gasket between the manifold and the pants that needs to be replaced. Also install a new converter o-ring.
  5. Now firmly press the exhaust pipe using the nuts. To do this you will need to compress the gasket.
  6. Then tighten the bolts of the spring-loaded connection with the neutralizer of your VAZ 2110.

There are no complaints about the appearance: it is made carefully, the mounting brackets are reinforced with additional welded jumpers. Upon opening, it was discovered that the perforated tube inside the muffler already had traces of rust, which indicates that it was made from ordinary steel.

The original and most expensive muffler for VAZ cars has the most unpresentable appearance. Numerous splashes and soot from welding, a very soft side fastening, welded with only one edge to the can, bends at the touch of a finger. Muffler of labyrinth reactive type. The inner tubes, which form a labyrinth for exhaust gases, have large areas covered with rust. No documents are supplied with the muffler, so we were unable to find out anything about the warranty.

In direct-flow mufflers, for example, the method of changing the direction of gas movement is never used, and a standard muffler uses turns from 90 to 360 degrees. It is these internal pipes, their diameter, diameter and frequency of holes that can drown out noise in almost the entire frequency spectrum.

First, the geometric dimensions and thickness of the metal used were checked, and the weight of each muffler was measured.

Then a strip of metal was cut from each can, which was submitted for metallographic examination to the Volna Plant NPO to determine the content of alloying elements (in particular, aluminum), which improve the properties of the manufacturing metal.

Aluminum is used as a steel deoxidizer, and its introduction during the smelting process makes it possible to bind harmful impurities such as oxygen and nitrogen, which reduce the mechanical properties of steel.

As the results of spectral analysis showed, all test samples contained aluminum, but in the Transmaster and Transmaster AL, SDV G014 and Izhora Muffler 136018 mufflers, its amount was negligible and had virtually no effect on the properties of steel. The last two specimens, in addition, had the largest amount of harmful impurities in the form of phosphorus and sulfur.

But the AvtoVAZagregat, AvtoMuffler, Izhora Muffler 135884 and SVD GAL012 mufflers, on the contrary, additionally contained titanium, niobium and vanadium, which indicates the use of higher quality steel.

However, the durability of the muffler depends not only on the quality of the metal, but also on its thickness, as well as a good design that does not create excessive resistance. The last two parameters, alas, left out a product with insufficient metal thickness (0.75 mm) and an exhaust pipe diameter (38 mm), which will also be narrowed to 32 mm, which will inevitably lead to an increase in resistance.

Manufacturing quality is the most obvious drawback of almost all of the suppressors tested. Rough welds, rust, crooked bends and fastenings, scuffs and dents. It feels like silencers in Russia are made in concentration camps from improvised materials.
