What is power steering VAZ 2109
On the first models of VAZ 2109 cars, power steering was not installed. The driver has to mount the unit additionally. It consists of two parts:
- The source of energy, its role is played by a hydraulic pump.
- An actuating mechanism that is usually combined with the steering rack. The general view of the device is shown in the photo.

Before mass use of the device, manufacturers tested the car, which showed:
- When moving the car with numerous turns in a limited space, the steering wheel rotated easily; it was necessary to turn it at a smaller angle than on a car without power steering.

- The pump fixation bracket is installed on the BC head. When installing it, the product needs to be modified: the engine mount is unscrewed, the ears for attaching it are sawed off, the far right mount is sawed off so that it does not interfere.

Removal
You should start by removing the decorative trim located on the steering wheel. It is simply pryed off with a screwdriver and removed. In newer cars the trim is made up of two parts. The second part is held on by self-tapping screws. To dismantle they must be unscrewed.
Next we move on to removing the steering wheel. Be sure to mark the position of the splines. This will help you install the steering wheel back correctly.
After this, unscrew the steering wheel mounting nut. To get started, just make a couple of revolutions. After this, we take the steering wheel with both hands, rock it a little and sharply pull it towards ourselves. This is usually enough for it to jump off the splines. Next, the nut is completely unscrewed and the entire steering wheel is removed. In general, there is nothing complicated here.
Attention!
Do not try to rip off the steering wheel with the nut completely screwed in; a steering wheel that comes off the splines can cause serious injury.

Hi all. Quite a long time ago I installed an adjustable steering column, but I couldn’t install the cover because of the old steering wheel, so I didn’t write about it in the blog. With the new steering wheel I was able to install a cover and now I’m not ashamed to share it with you.
So what do we need. Firstly, a new steering column, there are 3 types of them, the first is the oldest from 2110, it looks like this:

Steering of a VAZ 2109 car
On a VAZ 2109 car, the steering wheel is controlled by a rack and pinion mechanism and a damping element on the steering wheel. The diagram shows:

Tip: You can increase the service life of the ball joint elements of the rods by lubricating the joints with TM-5-18 transmission lubricant. To do this, the anthers of the ball joints of the steering links are pierced with a medical syringe, and lubricant 1 cm 3 is injected into each joint. The hole pierced by the syringe needle is very small and after the operation is completed it is tightened with the rubber of the boot.
1) First, remove the “-” terminal from the battery. (How to remove the “-” terminal from a battery, see the article: “Replacing the battery”, point “1”)
2) Then, for a more convenient replacement of the steering wheel, remove the steering column cover. (How to remove the column cover, see the article: “Replacing steering wheel switches” in paragraph “2-4”)
3) Then use a screwdriver to pry up the longitudinal trim “LADA”, and then remove it from the steering wheel of the car.
4) Next, when the cover is removed, use the screwdriver again and unscrew the two screws securing the cover.
5) And then remove the cover from the steering wheel of the car.

Removing the new steering wheel
Disconnect the negative cable terminal from the battery terminal. Use a screwdriver to pry off the cover of the signal switch...
...and remove it. Using a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the two self-tapping screws......and remove the cover. Using a “24” socket, unscrew the steering wheel mounting nut, but not all the way.
Using a marker or felt-tip pen, mark the position of the steering wheel on the shaft.
While rocking, we pull towards ourselves, and the steering wheel comes off the splines.
In the event of a sudden break, the nut will protect the face from injury. After this, completely unscrew the nut.
If the steering wheel sits very tightly, an assistant pulls the steering wheel towards you, and strikes the end of the steering shaft through a soft metal drift. To replace the slip ring, use a Phillips screwdriver to unscrew three screws......and, having disconnected the wire connector, remove the ring.
We assemble and install the steering wheel in the reverse order, aligning the marks.
How to replace the steering tip on a VAZ 2108-VAZ 21099?
Note! Before changing the tip, make sure that this is what your car really needs. To check the tip for play, perform the following operation: drive the car into the inspection hole and grab the steering rod with your hand (there is still a steering tip on it) and shake the steering rod with your hand. (Down, up), while you are shaking the rod, look at the ball joint of the steering tip, if it wobbles (there is play), then change the steering tip in the near future with a new one (Another tip, in exactly the same way check), if it turns out that both tips are serviceable and work normally, but there is still play in the steering wheel, then look at the steering rack, maybe it is to blame for this play!
Removal: 1. If suddenly you need to change the boot at the steering tip or fill it with more grease, then you will need to remove it as follows: first, the metal ring will need to be removed along the ball joint pin (see photo 1), then prying it with a screwdriver, remove the stopper that holds the boot on the hinge (see photo 2) and you can safely then remove the boot itself from the hinge and fill the joint with grease, just reconnect the boot so that it fits into the groove and fasten it tightly so that no dirt or dirt gets under it moisture!
Installation: The tip on the tie rod is installed in the reverse order of removal and so that the camber does not get too lost, turn it back to the same speed as was said earlier.

We begin the installation work by removing the steering wheel, steering cover and steering column switches together with the block.
You can also immediately remove the instrument panel trim and remove the instrument cluster - we will connect the control wires from the EUR to it.
Next, remove the ignition switch. You may have to tinker with the bolts that secure it if you break off their slots.
Remove the steering shaft. The result is something like this:
The marked studs need to be shortened slightly so that they do not rest against the EUR.
Install the adapter plate. The front nuts will also fit the old ones, but the rear bolts need to be replaced with 4.8 x 50 mm (with a 10mm head).

We fix the cardan from the EUR kit to the rack (we don’t tighten the fixing bolt all the way).
And we try on the electric amplifier itself. The complete cardan is a little short in length, so you will have to slightly increase the seats on the EUR itself in order to move it a little towards the cardan.
When everything worked out, we put back the steering column and instrument panel, and connect the electrical connectors to the EUR control unit.
We start the car and try it.
Now the steering wheel has become very light, this is especially noticeable in parking lots at low speeds. Also, vibrations from the road to the steering wheel are now transmitted to a lesser extent. Signs of malfunction of VAZ-2109 steering tips

I installed a Kalinovsky steering wheel on my 8 (low panel). Like a new model for the 10, it was sold together with a cover that is installed below the steering wheel. I had to use a hacksaw to slightly cut down the casing, which is installed from below, because... the old one no longer fits. There the hole diameter became larger. Compared to the old original one, this new steering wheel is much more comfortable, like on a foreign car. Previously, I had my own one standing under a low panel - it completely sucks. Of course, it was possible to switch to 10th, but I decided to immediately switch to Kalinovsky. It is thicker than the 10th and looks better.

Hurray, oh did it!!
So, the patient is a TAZ 21099 with a non-adjustable steering column. We put the wheels straight, pull out the 20A fuse F5 (signal circuit) in the black hole, remove the steering wheel and the steering column assembly with the body. We remove two contacts from the steering column housing. We take a pre-purchased Kalinovsky steering column housing together with switches (catalog no. 1118-3709305), and insert a ring with contacts for the Shniva buzzer (no. 2123-370932) into it. It turns out like this:
Then we take out those two wires using an awl from the connector bodies, lightly press them from the sides with pliers, and put a casing on one wire. We do all this in order to connect these wires to the socket in the steering column housing, like this:
We place the steering column housing on the steering column, tighten the bolt from below to 8 (you can move it along the column within 1.5 cm, closer or farther relative to the steering wheel).

Also, the reason is hidden in the steering rack. It must be remembered that the clearances of the suspension elements themselves do not cause vibrations or beating on the steering wheel. The unfixed part becomes a catalyst. But the main problem is the wheels, and you need to start from this. The steering wheel of the VAZ-2110 also shakes at low speed due to a faulty power steering mechanism. In this case, the rack is directly connected to the rods - hence the vibrations. In this case, experienced car owners advise inserting a rubber element into the steering shaft cardan. A ball with a diameter of 22 mm made of synthetic rubber will do. But the material wears out and cracks over time. As a more durable solution, you can use a cube with a side of 20 mm from the bumper of classic VAZ models.
Installation
To change the standard steering gear to an electric steering gear, you will need to purchase the following kit:
- New electric booster;
- Wiring kit for connecting the amplifier;
- Installation plate (you can find it on the market, but some people make it themselves);
- Shortened steering shaft driveshaft;
- Protective casing for “ten” with Europanel;
- Steering wheel (it’s better to take one from Kalina);
- Emergency button (located on the panel).
Replacement kit
That's it, when all the necessary components are ready and you are ready to work, you can start.
- Since we are talking about working on the electrical system, be sure to remove the negative terminal from the battery.
- Remove the steering wheel, remove the protective cover and steering column switches. Don't forget to remove the connecting block along with the switches.
- Unscrew the dashboard trim and remove the instrument cluster. This way you can then connect the control wiring from the electric amplifier.
- Remove the ignition switch. Be careful here. Many people in a hurry tear off the splines of the fastening bots.
- Remove the steering shaft.
- Now in front of you is a disassembled structure, where the rather long studs clearly stand out. They should be shortened. Otherwise, the pins will rest against the new electric power steering mechanism.
- Install the adapter plate. For its installation, the front nuts will fit the old ones. In this case, be sure to replace the rear bolts. Their size should be 4.8 by 50 millimeters and fit 10 keys.
- If you couldn’t find the mounting plate based on the drawings below, you can make it yourself.
- It's time to connect the wiring.
- The practice of VAZ 2109 owners shows that it is most convenient to route the wiring to the battery through the holes intended for the optics hydraulic corrector hoses.
- The rest of the wiring goes to the dashboard, where the connections should be made according to this diagram.
- Secure the electric power steering driveshaft to the rack, but do not tighten the fixing bolt. We are trying on the electric power steering. The cardan that comes with the kit is slightly inappropriate in length. The best solution here would be to increase the mounting sockets on the amplifier. This will allow you to move it towards the cardan.
- Reassemble the column and instrument panel in the reverse order of dismantling.
- Never forget to connect the connectors to the amplifier's command block.
- Return the negative wire to the battery, start the engine and check how the Priora electric power steering works on your nine.
Installation process
Removing the VAZ 21099 steering rack
It is best to invite someone to carry out such work, since it is much more convenient to do repairs together. Before you start figuring it out, you need to buy a steering rack repair kit for this car. It is best to carry out repairs in an inspection hole. Next we proceed according to the scheme:
- The first step is to unscrew the steering system finger nuts. They are located under the wings of the car.
- The next step is to unscrew the spline connection bolt (corkscrew). Personally, I had to look for it for quite a long time. Hint - it is located next to the pedal assembly.
- Then the plastic linings are removed from the steering shaft. I recommend doing this as carefully as possible, since I was unable to remove the casing without damaging it - the plastic material is fragile.
- Using 13mm wrenches (heads are ideal), the nuts are unscrewed, which secure the entire steering system to the car itself.
- Next we remove the brackets securing the steering mechanism. The next step is to separate the steering shaft from the drive gear. After this fraud, you need to lift the right side of the car and pull out the entire mechanism.
Assembly
Removing the steering wheel is not a problem, although there are some difficulties. But the reverse installation also has its own peculiarities. If you removed the steering wheel to replace the signal slip ring, then install it back according to the marks made. When installing a new one, try to place it as level as possible.
Before installation, place all steering column switches in the neutral position and place the steering wheel on the splines. After this, screw on the fastening nut, but do not tighten it yet. Connect all connectors, connect the battery. Test the steering wheel operation
First of all, pay attention to the coincidence of straight-line movement and the position of the steering wheel. If they do not match, then you need to remove the steering wheel and move it along the splines in the desired direction
And test again. After achieving the result, the nut is tightened. Decorative overlays are installed, signal operation is checked, and the plastic of the speaker is assembled.
Other models
. Thus, you can remove the steering wheel not only on the nine. This description is completely suitable for the entire tenth VAZ family, as well as for Lada Priora and Lada Granta. In the latter case, in addition to other preparatory work, you will have to unlock and move down the steering wheel adjustment lever.
