After the invention of the internal combustion engine, the gearbox for cars was invented. The purpose of this device is to change wheel speeds and transmit torque within greater limits than the engine can provide. The gearbox ensures optimal engine operation at different vehicle speeds.
What kind of gearboxes are there?
- With manual mechanical gear shifting, the driver switches the gear himself.
- Automatic - depends on external parameters (engine speed and engine load). In such gearboxes, gears are switched automatically, and the control system operates without driver intervention.
- A robotic (similar to an automatic) works practically like an automatic transmission, but is controlled by a computer.

- 5500 rubles
We will only consider boxes with mechanical gear shifting, abbr. 5-speed manual transmission is the most common; 6-speed manual transmissions are less common. Trucks even use 8-10-12 speed gearboxes. Boxes are sometimes called transmissions.
Checkpoint not working: looking for solutions
The transmission largely determines safety and driving comfort. Its serviceability must be strictly monitored. The most common sign of problems with the mechanics of a VAZ is knockout of gearbox steps. This defect occurs very often. Many continue to travel with him for a certain time. But such experiments are fraught with serious consequences.
Firstly, gearbox defects are layered on top of each other. The transmission problem progresses very quickly. It’s not far from a vehicle stopping in the middle of the road. Not the best prospect, you will agree.
Increased loads on the transmission unit provoke more serious damage to the mechanics. Driving with a defective gearbox often leads to failure of the latter. Of course, you can buy a gearbox for a VAZ 2107 (5-speed ) or a unit for a car of another model, quickly replace the unit at the nearest service station and drive on. But how profitable will such a solution be?
New box to replace the broken one
VAZ 2107 gearboxes in Moscow are offered at different prices. The wide price range is due to the specifics of the sale of units. You can buy a new box for the seven or another model of Zhiguli in a regular auto parts store, a specialized online store, or directly at a service station.
Everyone chooses their own way to purchase a new unit. But you shouldn’t count on significant cost optimization in such cases. If you are offered a gearbox for a VAZ 2106 (5-speed), the price of which is too low compared to the market average, this is a serious reason to be wary. And it doesn’t hurt to remember the folk wisdom about the location of free (in this case cheap) cheese.
Specificity of manual transmission VAZ
VAZ cars use a three-shaft gearbox with a classic arrangement of shafts (primary, secondary and intermediate).
- The primary (aka drive) shaft is connected through the clutch to the engine flywheel.
- The secondary (aka driven) shaft is permanently connected to the driveshaft or drives.
- The intermediate shaft is designed to transmit torque from the primary shaft to the secondary shaft.
On the input shaft there is a drive gear that transmits rotation to the intermediate shaft. On prom. The shaft contains a gear block. On the secondary shaft there are driven gears on the splines of the shaft and move along it, or rotate on the hubs, then their longitudinal movement along the shaft is excluded, then the gears are switched by a sliding clutch equipped with a synchronizer. Sports manual transmissions often use dog clutches.

We thoroughly wash all parts in kerosene or diesel fuel and inspect them. The teeth of gears and couplings should be free of chips, scoring, fatigue chipping and noticeable wear. The surfaces of the shafts, axles and gear shift rods must be completely smooth, without scoring, pitting or severe wear. There should be no cracks or nicks on the crankcase, and there should be no wear or signs of turning in the bearing bores. Corrosion and signs of crushing and seizing are unacceptable on the shaft splines. Minor damage can be eliminated with fine sandpaper followed by polishing, but it is better to replace damaged parts with new ones. All rolling bearings, both ball and roller, must be in impeccable condition, their radial play should not exceed 0.05 mm, and any defects on the tracks and rolling elements are unacceptable. Separators should not have ruptures, contact with rings and melting (for plastic ones). In general, if the “mileage” of the box exceeds 120 thousand km and the unit is being repaired with disassembly, it is better to replace all bearings with new ones, regardless of their condition, especially if severe damage to the gears and gear clutches has been noticed. We replace the cuffs with new ones in any case. During assembly, lubricate all parts of the box, incl. We cover the bearing seats and the bearings themselves with transmission oil, cover the joints of the crankcase and covers with a thin layer of oil-resistant sealant, and the parts of the switching mechanism with CV joint-4 lubricant. Types of VAZ gearbox breakdowns
Here are the main types of faults in manual transmissions:
- noise in a used gearbox when the neutral position is engaged may be caused by high wear on the drive shaft bearing or low oil level;
- noise (crunching) when the gears are engaged occurs as a result of wear of the synchronizer or clutch. The box mounting bolts may be loose or the clutch may not be disengaged;
- noise during operation of the box occurs due to wear of some bearings, deterioration of synchronizer clutches, or low/no oil level;
- Difficulty shifting gears occurs due to wear of synchronizer couplings, gears, low oil level, under-disengagement of the clutch, damage to the traction, loosening of the gearbox to the car body.
- spontaneous gear disengagement can be caused by loosening of the gearbox, jamming of the drive rod, wear of the synchronizer clutches and the synchronizers themselves, wear of the gears or shift rod, shift fork, and may also be due to wear of the intermediate shaft bearings;
- Oil leakage usually occurs due to wear of the oil seals or loosening of the gearbox threaded connections.
How to install a new gearbox?
As soon as the old one is removed. Clean the junction between the engine and the gearbox. Be sure to check the clutch. If it needs replacing, it is better to do it now to avoid these difficulties in the future.
With the help of a partner, install the new transmission and drive it into the engine. It is worth noting that one of the most difficult procedures is inserting the transmission input shaft into the rear crankshaft bearing, so you will need a lot of physical strength and a little patience. After the box is attached, tighten the nuts securing the gearbox to the engine.
Install the crossbar and tighten it. Now the front box is securely fixed. At this time, you can already hang individual elements. These include: the speedometer drive, contacts for turning on the reversing lights and the clutch drive. After all this “trifle” has been installed, you can put the driveshaft in place. To do this, insert it into the slot of the elastic coupling and put on the fixing seal. Next, using a screwdriver and pliers, bend the metal antennae to the oil seal.
The final step is to install the cross member and tighten it. After this, you can install the exhaust system and connect the battery terminal
The VAZ 2106 can be equipped with a four-speed or five-speed gearbox. The five-speed transmission is based on the four-speed, so both transmissions are interchangeable and have most of the same parts.
Since the manufacturer installs only five-speed gearboxes on VAZ 2106 cars of the last years of production, and they are gradually displacing four-speed ones from service, repair of a five-speed gearbox will be considered as more complex.

The shafts in the housing are loose, and during operation they undergo axial displacement.
Transmission diagnostics, repair and replacement of VAZ gearbox
As for diagnosing the operation of a used VAZ gearbox. then in some cases it can be done independently, but in most cases it cannot be done without a specialist. By the way, we will diagnose the box for free and identify the cause. Often the reason lies not in the box itself, but for example in the gearbox, clutch, traction, etc. What can dishonest repair shops take advantage of? That's why we always ask clients what the problem is and do the diagnostics ourselves.
After diagnostics, we offer repair of a VAZ gearbox or other unit that has failed. Replacing a manual transmission with a used VAZ 2105, 2106, 2106
A rational solution is to replace the damaged box with a serviceable one, even if it has been used. The range of offers of this type is extremely wide. Often, replacement services are offered by private craftsmen. buy a used gearbox for a VAZ 2104, 2107 5-mortar from them . Should you trust such specialists? If the person is one of your own, proven, then, of course, there is no reason to worry. If you are looking for a specialist for the first time, it is more rational to give preference to specialized workshops rather than private owners.
Replacing the box at a service station is carried out quickly, with a guarantee of quality. Moreover, both the unit itself and the car mechanic work performed are at a decent level. As for the cost of replacement, cooperation with private owners is not always cheaper. The workshop's services benefit from the long-term, maintenance-free operation of the replaced transmission unit.
Box repair: can you do it yourself?
Repairing the five-speed gearbox of a VAZ 2107 and other models is technically quite complex. Especially if it cannot be done without dismantling or rebuilding the transmission unit. If you do not have special knowledge, experience in car mechanics, or special tools, it is better not to experiment with independent work. Eliminating the consequences of incompetent repairs can be quite expensive. Overpayments are not only possible, but also very likely.
Professional repair of the classic VAZ 2105, 2106 (5-mortar) gearbox will reduce financial risks. The service can be ordered in our workshop on the most favorable terms. We repair boxes of all models of Zhiguli, we guarantee efficiency and quality of work performed. Additionally, at the station you can get free advice on how to prevent problems with checkpoints in the future.
Several features of repairing a VAZ five-speed gearbox
Professional repair of a VAZ 5-speed gearbox , like any other auto mechanic procedure, has its own characteristics. They are determined, first of all, by the specificity and complexity of the faults. Their number also plays a role. There are often cases when it is more rational to buy a used gearbox to replace the original unit than to bother with repairs.
If you want to restore a transmission unit, it would be a good idea to understand the specifics of providing transmission repair services.
What is bulkheading and how is it done?
Repair of the VAZ 2105, 2107 and other models gearboxes can be routine or major. The latter involves a complete overhaul of the unit. Professional specialists always conduct detailed diagnostics of the transmission unit before overhaul. The data obtained allow us to get a clear idea of the physical and technical properties of the elements of the unit.
A major overhaul of a VAZ 2107 manual transmission may have different costs, and the same applies to the restoration of gearboxes of other models. The price is determined by the complexity of the work performed, the quantity, and the specifics of the faults.
Bulkheading requires compliance with certain regulations. When performing work, our workshop specialists strictly follow the technical repair diagrams. The station is equipped with a special unit for carrying out routine maintenance. The availability of specialized equipment and the competence of the personnel make it possible to guarantee that the overhaul is performed in accordance with the technical recommendations of the gearbox manufacturer.
A few nuances of current repairs
If there is a problem with the transmission unit, do not rush to decide to replace it. to buy a used VAZ 2107 5st gearbox . We recommend that you first contact a workshop to diagnose the unit and identify the causes of malfunctions in the box. It is quite possible that the damage will not be so serious and a simple repair will be enough.
Repair work is carried out, as in the case of overhauling the transmission unit, in strict accordance with technical regulations. Worn parts are replaced with new ones. Restored elements are brought back into working condition. The correct operation of the unit as a whole is checked.
When is maintenance necessary? You should contact a workshop if you notice deviations in the operation of the transmission unit that do not radically affect safety or driving comfort. Moreover, there is no point in delaying repairs. The longer a gearbox with defects operates under standard (and even more so under extreme) conditions, the higher the risk of worsening problems and, accordingly, increasing the cost of restoration work.
How do specialists work?
Our workshop uses a proven, effective scheme of cooperation with clients within the framework of major and current repairs of transmission units. The same applies to the replacement of units and the sale of spare parts. If you need a used VAZ-5 box, you can buy it at the best price and without intermediaries from us.
As for repairs, we use the following scheme:
- receiving a client, conducting diagnostics;
- discussion of problems with the unit, construction of a repair scheme, calculation of estimates;
- approval of the estimate by the client;
- carrying out repair work.
The estimated cost is most often fixed. In some cases, it is possible to change the repair price if additional defects are identified. But the amount is always agreed with the client.

How to increase the life of the gearbox on VAZ cars?
Without a gearbox repairman
You can get by if you use the gearbox carefully, because it is designed for a long service life and high mileage of the car. The owner of his car needs to monitor the oil level in the gearbox; if it is low, it is necessary to add it to the level on the dipstick or control hole. Sometimes you need to completely change the oil. The period for changing the gearbox oil is indicated in the vehicle manual, but for better performance you can change it every 50-60 thousand km. mileage The rapid wear of mechanical transmission components is affected by aggressive driving by the driver and rough gear shifting. Therefore, it is quite possible to extend the “life” of the box on your own and with a sensitive attitude towards the car, but who, where, and in what ways will serve you depends only on you.
Work on dismantling the five-speed gearbox VAZ 2107
Installing the car on a lift (you can use an overpass or a pit) is preceded by disconnecting the battery and removing the radio panel:
- Remove and disassemble the gearbox rod.
- Remove the cover from the gap where the lever attaches and remove the foam filling.
- Remove the exhaust pipe from the exhaust system.
- Move the starter, disconnect the speedometer wire.
- Unscrew the bolts holding the cardan and remove it.
- The clutch cylinder is removed using the same method.
- After this, the gearbox is removed from the car. To do this, it is best to invite assistants who will support the mechanism while you unscrew the mounting bolts. At this stage, it is also advisable to drain the transmission oil.
After all these steps have been completed, we repair the VAZ 2107 gearbox.
From 4-speed to 5-speed
Finally, let’s consider such an issue as converting the gearbox from 4 to 5 stages of the VAZ-2105. Such a modification is quite possible, since when the five-speed gearbox was created, the basis for it was the 4-speed version. But in this case, you will have to replace some of the components taken from the 5-speed gearbox, namely:
- Back cover;
- Intermediate shaft (with a hole for mounting the 5th gear gear block);
- Secondary shaft (in the 5-speed version it is slightly shorter);
- 5th speed gear block;
- Reverse idler gear axis;
- A set of rods together with a fork for 5th and reverse gears;
- Gear shift mechanism (slide);
- Reverse light sensor;
- Power unit mounting bracket;

What and when to pour into the VAZ-2110 gearbox
The box, which is used in the domestic “ten”, is quite durable and hardy. But this is only subject to proper operation and timely replacement of transmission oil. The most suitable for the VAZ-2110 gearbox can be considered a synthetic base. This is especially true for cars that are operated in extreme conditions. True, synthetics have one drawback, which is their high cost. But, given the replacement interval, you can spend money. As a last resort, it is permissible to use semi-synthetic oils. But you can’t mix synthetics and semi-synthetics. You shouldn't forget about this.
If we talk about which gear oil is best for the VAZ-2110, then the first thing you need to decide on is the viscosity. There are summer, winter and all-season transmission oils. The latter are the most popular due to their versatility. True, the price tag for such a lubricant is a little higher, but it’s worth it. The manufacturer recommends TM-14-2 oil, which is what needs to be poured into the box. There are better analogues, such as Lukoil-Super. True, the base here is mineral, so it is not suitable for gears, but it supports the operation of synchronizers perfectly. Valvoline SynPower is a Dutch synthetic oil. It is expensive, but the performance characteristics are at the highest level.
Replacing gears and synchronizers
The work of replacing gears and synchronizers is one of the most difficult when repairing a gearbox. There is a standard repair kit containing all the necessary parts to help cope with the task. It is advisable to prepare a special tool.
Gears and synchronizers on the primary and secondary shafts are changed in almost the same way.
The process goes like this:
- remove the shaft from the box;
- clamp the shaft in a vice, wrapping it in something soft;
- Remove the retaining ring from the shaft using a special tool or a screwdriver:
- press the bearings off the shaft;
- remove the shaft from the vice, place it vertically, resting the first gear on two supports;
- carefully press the gear off the shaft;
- Carry out similar operations with the remaining gears and synchronizers.
Removing and replacing the fifth gear gear occurs differently.
REPLACING SEALS
The need to replace oil seals arises when an oil leak occurs from the gearbox housing. Both the front and rear cuffs can fail. In this case, the seals will need to be replaced.
INPUT SHAFT SEAL
If signs of damage to the input shaft oil seal were noticed, i.e., traces of lubricant leakage appeared in the area of the clutch housing, then the likely cause is failure of the input shaft seal. An oil leak may also appear from the engine when the rear crankshaft oil seal wears out. In order to determine where exactly the oil is leaking from, you can try to figure it out by smell, since motor lubrication is different from transmission lubrication.
The gearbox input shaft oil seal is installed in the clutch housing
DESCRIPTION AND DIMENSIONS
The VAZ 2101 gearbox input shaft oil seal has the following dimensions: 28x47x8 mm, which corresponds to the inner and outer diameter, as well as the thickness of the race.
REPLACING THE INPUT SHAFT SEAL
To replace the cuff on the input shaft, you will need to remove the box from the car and remove the clutch housing. Then, using the adapter, we knock the oil seal out of the housing and remove it with pliers. To install a new part, you will need a suitable mandrel and a hammer.
To replace the input shaft oil seal, you will need to dismantle the gearbox, remove the clutch housing and knock out the damaged element. The new cuff is installed in the reverse order
SECONDARY SHAFT SEAL
When the secondary shaft oil seal fails, traces of oil leakage appear in the rear part of the gearbox. In this case, the part needs to be replaced.
DESCRIPTION AND DIMENSIONS
The secondary shaft cuff has the following dimensions: 32x56x10 mm. When purchasing a seal, you should pay attention to these parameters so as not to mistakenly take a part of a different size.
REPLACING THE SECONDARY SHAFT SEAL
On the secondary shaft of the VAZ 2101 gearbox, compared to the primary shaft, the oil seal is much easier to change, since there is no need to dismantle the unit. Preliminary measures include removing the cardan together with the elastic coupling. After this, perform the following steps:
- Remove the centering ring from the secondary shaft.
- Remove the locking element.
- Unscrew the nut by 30.
- We remove the flange with a puller or knock it down with a hammer.
- We pry up the old oil seal with a screwdriver and remove it from the rear of the gearbox.
- We press the new cuff with a suitable piece of pipe.
