Replacing the air filter on a VAZ 2110, VAZ 2111, VAZ 2112

Regardless of the make and model of the vehicle, each car is equipped with a similar set of parts that make up a single design. One of these auto parts is an air filter. The corresponding auto spare part is a kind of mechanism through which the atmospheric air is purified from dust, dirt and other micropollutant particles entering the car engine. The importance of an air purifier cannot be overestimated, since such a relatively small, and at first glance mediocre, part of the vehicle performs a number of functions that ensure the smooth functioning of the engine and the car as a whole.

Novice car enthusiasts do not always take this part of the car seriously, however, this is not true. You should be aware that the air filter becomes dirty over time and ceases to perform its main functions, so it is important to regularly check the condition of the air cleaner and, if necessary, replace the corresponding part. This publication will discuss the timing and features of replacing the air filter on VAZ models such as 2110 and 2112. In addition, information will be provided on the nuances of replacing the air cleaner on a car with an injector and the consequences of untimely replacement of the filtering auto parts.

Reasons for high fuel consumption on VAZ

  1. Dirty air filter.
  2. Inappropriate tire pressure.
  3. Dirty fuel filter.
  4. Low fuel pressure.
  5. Oxygen sensor malfunction.
  6. Vehicle speed sensor malfunction.
  7. Low compression.
  8. Low quality gasoline.

Sometimes you can solve the problem of the huge fuel consumption of the VAZ-2114 yourself.
First of all, you need to check the degree of contamination of the fuel filter and check it for debris. If there is debris inside it or suspicion of contamination, then it is better to replace it. This element is inexpensive, and its average price is 300 rubles. You can replace it yourself - it’s simple and does not require the intervention of a specialist. The second filter is the air filter. Air passes through it, which is subsequently mixed with gasoline and supplied to the combustion chamber. And if it is dirty, it will not be able to pass enough air. As a result, the air-fuel mixture will not be enriched with oxygen, and a lean fuel mixture will quite logically lead to increased gasoline consumption. Car owners often manage to reduce gasoline consumption by approximately 3 liters per 100 kilometers simply by replacing the air filter. It's easy to change - it's in a large black box under the hood.

However, if the sensor breaks down, the system warns the driver about this with a “Check” light on the dashboard. You can also see the error using the on-board computer. Often this sensor breaks down due to poor quality gasoline, oil getting into the combustion chamber, or valve clamping.

  1. Speedometer failure or interruptions.
  2. “Floating” idle speed.
  3. Noticeable loss of traction.
  4. Stopping the engine when idling.
  5. Increased gasoline consumption.

The crankshaft position or timing sensor is also called a phase sensor. It determines the engine operating cycle and generates a signal depending on this. Such a sensor is not installed on all VAZ cars. If it malfunctions, a “Check” will light up on the dashboard, and in addition to increased gasoline consumption, there will be a drop in engine power, fuel detonation in the combustion chamber, and engine stoppage in neutral gear.

When to change?

The air filter is an important auto part, due to which the car engine and the vehicle as a whole function properly. The fundamental function of the filter is to clean the atmospheric air entering the engine compartment from impurities of dust, dirt and other microparticles. In addition, the air purifier on a VAZ 2110 and 2112 car is capable of performing the exact opposite function, namely, the filter element not only cleans the air and transports the required amount of purified air into the combustion chamber. Thus, the quality of the air entering the engine piston system depends on the condition and efficiency of the air filter. And this, in turn, affects the functioning of the car engine and individual elements of the system.

How often to replace the cabin filter

The cabin filter is an integral part of any modern car. It would seem that. But in practice this is not the case. An air purifier is necessary not only for a comfortable stay in the car, but is also responsible for the health of the driver and those in the vehicle.

Owners of VAZ classics are deprived of the opportunity to breathe fresh air inside the vehicle. On eights and nines there is no interior air purifier. Only with the advent of the VAZ 2110 model (dozens) was the problem solved. Initially, vertical filters were installed in this model; later the products were replaced with horizontal ones.

The manufacturer claims that the frequency of replacing the cabin filter on the VAZ 2110 is 15 thousand kilometers. Considering the realities of Russian roads, replacement times may be reduced. The driver can determine the need for replacement by mileage, by inspecting the product or by existing signs, which will be described later in the article.

How to choose the right cabin filter for a VAZ 2110?

Knowing the dimensions of the element will help you choose the right product:

  • for an old-style VAZ 2110, a cartridge of 230.0x193.0 mm, thickness 45 mm is required;
  • a more compact product, which has been manufactured since 2003: 210.0x160.0 mm, thickness 40 mm.

Please check these details when purchasing. For those living in a small town, a regular air purifier is suitable, but for those living in big cities, who are constantly stuck in traffic jams, they should opt for a carbon filter. It will not allow harmful emissions and toxins to enter the car interior.

On a VAZ 2110, the cabin filter is replaced depending on whether you are purchasing the product for an old model or a new one:

  • NF-6001c. Name - Nevsky filter. Suitable for VAZ cars produced before 2003.
  • 21110-8122021-83. This cleaner is purchased for VAZ-2110 produced after 2003.

So, if the filter is clogged, can it be cleaned, or should it just be replaced? This will be discussed later in the article.

Functional purpose

Their direct purpose is to retain, without allowing various harmful substances into the interior, pollen from flowering plants (which is especially important for those suffering from allergies) and microorganisms.

A conventional cabin air filter does the “mechanical” job of retaining microparticles contained in dust. But coal is better at dealing with odors and bacteria.

Carbon cabin filter VAZ 2110

The car enthusiast should still not forget that installing a new filter is a prerequisite if the old one is already clogged, although the notorious 15 thousand km have not yet been completed.

For allergy sufferers, for example, it is best to change it annually before the plants begin to flower intensively.

Air intake for circulation inside the cabin is made half a meter from the road, where the concentration of harmful substances is the highest. Therefore, a filter that is not replaced in time can lead not to the absorption of this “harmfulness”, but, on the contrary, to its release into the cabin, where everyone in the car breathes it, and then is surprised by summer colds, “outbreaks” of allergies and other troubles. And the culprit for this is a cheap part that they forgot to change in time.

We think from the first start: how to extend the life of the motor

The service life of a car largely depends on driving style and proper attitude towards the vehicle. Only in second place is the quality of manufacturing of parts and assembly of units.

From the moment you buy a car, you should already think about how to extend the life of the internal combustion engine

. The following activities will help you do this:

  • the process of running in car systems should be carried out only in accordance with the modes specified by the manufacturer;
  • It is advisable to keep the tachometer needle in the recommended speed range (for the “ten”: 2000 – 3500 rpm (16 v) and for 8 v: 1500 – 3000 rpm);
  • do not expose the internal combustion engine to operation in the red zone, as the crankshaft bearings wear out quickly;
  • refrain from using the car in winter;
  • If you drive frequently in urban conditions, you should change the oil twice as often, and do not spare any money on the latter.

It is also worth remembering that it is necessary to regularly replace the fuel, oil and air filters of the VAZ 2110 vehicle systems throughout the entire period of use of the vehicle. The change interval in mileage units is indicated in the tens service instructions.

Air filter location

On cars equipped with injection and carburetor engines, the filter is located in the upper part and is located above the engine. It can be seen immediately after opening the hood. The shape depends on the type of engine. For example, on an injection engine the filter is made in the form of a circle, and on a carburetor engine it is rectangular. There is also a slight difference in the distance to the motor.

Where is the air filter located?

What is a filter?

The design of the filter is very simple and straightforward. It has a square or round shape with a gill-like structure. The material used is paper, some kind of fabric, foam rubber or felt.

When is replacement required?

You can find out that the filter is clogged with debris and dust by the following parameters:

The car's power has become less and it drives a little worse than before.

Fuel consumption has increased. The reason for this is that the flow of air into the cylinders has decreased, and for normal driving the injectors began to add a little gasoline to the manifold.

On frosty days the car starts up longer and worse.

Procedure for replacing the filter on VAZ 2110, 2111 and 2112

Before replacing the filter, you need to pay attention to the associated electronics and electrical wiring. To avoid problems with this, you should de-energize the battery by disconnecting one of the terminals from it

Then, even if water gets on the wiring or a bare wire is accidentally touched by your hand, there will be no problems.

Changing this important system for a car - whether on an injection engine or a carburetor - is a very quick job, it only takes 5-10 minutes.

Tool preparation:

  • Ten wrench;
  • Curly screwdriver;
  • Directly filter;
  • Rags or rags.

Injection engine

This type of engine has a round filter. Changing the filter element must begin by removing the cover from the main body. To do this, you need to unscrew all four fastening screws. It won't be possible to completely remove the cover and put it away so it doesn't interfere because of the interfering pipe, so you can just put it next to the engine. Just make sure that it is not hot, otherwise the plastic case will melt. Next, the old filter that has become unusable is carefully removed and a new one is put in its place. Just first you need to take a rag and clean the case from the dust that has accumulated there. Otherwise, all this dirt will immediately begin to clog the newly installed new cleaning element.

When installing, you need to pay special attention to the corrugation of the new part. The location must correspond to the arrows marked on the inside of the filter and be located along them. Then the cover is put back and tightened with the same bolts

It is advisable to install it hermetically so that no dirt or dust gets inside. You can select and use a good rubber seal.

Carburetor engine

The technology for changing the filter on a carburetor engine is the same. Only the lid is removed in a slightly different way.

  1. Using a wrench, you need to unscrew the nut in the middle of the lid and unfasten the 4 fastening latches on the sides.
  2. Next, the cover is also removed (there is no pipe, so you can safely put it on the ground), the old filter is removed, the housing is cleaned of dirt, and a new part is installed.
  3. The cover is placed back on the body and secured with a nut and side fasteners. Be sure to check whether the lid fits tightly to the body. If the fit is not tight, gaps will appear. Through which untreated dirty air will enter the engine.

Types and principle of operation

The design of the filter is quite simple. If it is an injection motor, then the filter elements are made in the form of squares with a gill-like structure. And a special material traps dirt, dust and other particles of debris at the entrance to the system.

Gill-shaped filter structure

Today there are a large number of so-called sports air filters on the market. Manufacturers assure that they are able to reduce air resistance to a minimum and increase the power of the power unit. In fact, the difference between regular and “sporty” elements is practically zero. But the latter can cost 10 times more than a standard VAZ filter.

How does this very element work? Let's try to figure it out.

  1. First, the filter is installed in front of the engine compartment and fixed on supports.
  2. Air is sucked in through the intake pipe. This pipe is located under the filter.
  3. The pumped air goes through the filter elements, passes through the air flow sensor, pipe and intake hose.
  4. Then it passes into the receiver, the intake pipe and directly to the cylinders, where the air-fuel mixture is formed.

Air filter VAZ-2110 - is it so difficult to change it?

An air filter is used to prevent dirt and dust from entering the engine. Naturally, it becomes clogged over time and needs to be changed. As with other cars, a new filter is installed on the VAZ-2110 after a certain mileage.

When and why it is necessary to change the air purification filter on a VAZ-2110

It is advisable to change the air filter of almost any car every 10–15 thousand km, and not 30,000 km, as the manufacturer recommends. At the same time, it is necessary to take into account the degree of pollution of the surrounding air and the operating conditions of the vehicle, which directly determine how quickly the filter element becomes unusable. If the car is often used on very dirty and dusty roads (for example, dirt or gravel, country roads, etc.), then it is better to change the filter every 5000 km, since in this case it clogs much faster and more severely.

The need to replace a dirty air filter is obvious. Not only will the engine begin to “choke” due to an insufficient amount of air in the fuel mixture, which will not burn completely, but the power will decrease and gasoline consumption will increase, but the engine may also begin to overheat, have difficulty starting “in cold” and run unstably at idle – the potential troubles don’t end there. The filter will not only allow less air to pass through, but the air that is still drawn through it will practically not be cleaned. Abrasive particles from dirty air can get directly into the engine cylinders and damage the surfaces of the rubbing parts - rings and liner walls. The tightness of their contact will decrease - the compression will drop. The oil remaining in the cylinder scratches will begin to burn and its consumption will increase. And so on.

How to remove the air purification filter on an injection VAZ-2110

Before replacing, turn off the engine, put the car on the handbrake and, to be safe, engage first or reverse gear, disconnect the ground wire from the battery.

Behind the filter on the pipe, disconnect the connector with the cable from the air flow sensor by squeezing the plastic latch from below with a finger or a screwdriver.

Unscrew the 4 screws securing the filter housing cover.

Loosen the clamp of the air outlet pipe on the cover mount. The latter is carefully lifted, removing it from the clamp. The cap is turned over and then placed on the battery. During this operation, you must try not to damage the corrugation of the pipe.

Remove the filter element.

Installing a new filter element

Inspect the filter housing. If necessary, remove dirt from it with a vacuum cleaner and wipe it with a rag. At the same time, during an external inspection, you can find out how well the filter worked. When the inside of the case is clean, it means it has coped with its task.

We carefully and tightly install the new filter in place of the old one. In this case, it must be positioned in such a way that the corrugations are directed parallel to the longitudinal axis of the car. Otherwise, the corrugations located across the air flow will create strong resistance to it. By the way, on the filter housing there are arrows in the correct direction of the corrugations.

Next, all elements are assembled in reverse order.

During assembly, you must try to ensure that the filter gasket under the housing cover and at the joint between the housing and the cover fits well, otherwise proper filtration will be disrupted and dust may enter the engine. Therefore, the 4 screws need to be tightened evenly, preferably crosswise, avoiding the cover being skewered.

If it is not possible to purchase a new filter element or there are no products of the required quality on sale, then you can blow out the old one. To do this, you will need a compressor of sufficient power.

Do-it-yourself Federal Tax Service

This method works on a car with a carburetor where the air filter housing is shaped like a pan. As far as we know, air enters the case through a small hole.

The filter housing is cut completely so that when installing the filter, air can flow evenly from all sides. This will make it easier for the motor to breathe. This method can only be used in the warm season, since in the cold season the engine may not start due to cold air.

Replacing the filter

Replacing the air filter for a VAZ 2110 injector

The air filter of almost any car needs to be replaced every 10-15 thousand kilometers. But everything directly depends on the conditions in which the car is operated, as well as on air pollution. If the car is used on very dusty and dirty roads, for example, on country roads, gravel or dirt roads, etc., then it is better to change the filter every 5 thousand kilometers, because in this case the filter clogs much faster and more severely.

Reasons for replacement

Air filter VAZ 2110 injector

So:

  • The main reason for replacing the air filter is that it is dirty. At first, it can cause additional fuel consumption; it also makes it difficult to start a cold engine because the engine does not have enough oxygen, so an increased amount of fuel is automatically added to the manifold. Due to severe contamination of the filter element, the oxygen sensor, which is also called the MAF sensor, becomes unusable.
  • If the car becomes stuffy due to lack of traction, if malfunctions appear in the engine or the speed begins to “float”, then most likely the air engine needs to be replaced.
  • Quite often the air filter is replaced as part of a service package. The fuel and oil filters are also replaced along with it.

Some useful tips

Change the air filter on time, because both the stability of the engine and fuel consumption depend on its condition. Inspect the filter element for its condition at least twice a month. In cars with carburetor engines, pay attention to the cleanliness of the filter housing. If oil or a whitish emulsion appears in it, then it’s time to clean the breather or change the oil scraper rings

In this case, the filter must be replaced. Do not buy cheap filter elements of dubious origin. It is better to contact a specialized store, where they will not only select a suitable model for you, but will also advise you on its correct installation. You shouldn’t install “nulevik” just like that. If you are not a racer or a street racer, limit yourself to simple models of filter elements.
