Replacing the air filter on a VAZ 2110 with your own hands

In order for a car engine to operate stably with maximum performance, it needs a high-quality fuel mixture. One of the most important devices involved in its formation is the air filter - an essential element of any engine, be it gasoline or diesel. It is this that provides the carburetor or injector with air, cleaning it from moisture and dust.

In this article we will talk about what the VAZ-2110 air filter is, and also consider the process of installing it.

Why do you need a filter?

Both gasoline and diesel engines can work perfectly without an air filtration device, but how long will it last? The smallest particles of dust, dirt and moisture, when they enter the engine cylinders, will eventually begin to destroy the rubbing parts.

In addition, a fuel mixture that contains moisture and various debris will not only not provide sufficient power, but will also cause rapid failure of the carburetor, injector, injectors, etc.

The role of the filter in a car

The Lada Kalina engine requires about 12-14 cubic meters of air for every 100 km of travel. In the intake manifold, it is mixed with fuel sprayed by the injector nozzles. The mixture then enters the cylinder chambers, where it is burned. The optimal proportion of air to fuel ensures that the engine achieves the characteristics declared by the manufacturer. It is no secret that a large volume of dust, suspended dirt and other compounds enters the intake receiver along with the air. The role of the filter is to ensure high-quality cleaning of the intake air, because it is a kind of barrier in the path of these negative particles.

If there was no air filter, then all the suspended dirt would inevitably fall inside the engine cylinders, gradually settling on its walls and accumulating in the oil system. This would lead to scoring on the walls of the liners and liners, which would require a major overhaul.

Gradual clogging of the filter element leads to a deterioration in its throughput and, as a consequence, to air starvation of the LADA Kalina engine. This is fraught with the formation of carbon deposits on the parts of the valve assembly and elements of the cylinder-piston group, because such combustion will be characterized by the presence of a fuel-enriched mixture above the permissible limit. This inevitably leads to increased fuel consumption and a decrease in the power level of the unit. Also, exhaust gases are endowed with increased toxicity.

Where is the air filter element located and what is it?

The VAZ-2110 air filter is located in the engine compartment of the car. Depending on the type of engine, its housing may have a different appearance. In carburetor engines it is made of metal and has a round shape. The VAZ-2110 air filter (injector) is placed in a rectangular plastic case.

The filter element itself also has a different shape: for a carburetor it is round, for an injector it is rectangular. It is made of a special porous material, compressed into an accordion.

The filter housing for injection models is connected to the engine via corrugation. This is a kind of air duct through which already purified air enters the device where the fuel mixture is formed. The VAZ-2110 air filter corrugation is a thick corrugated rubber hose. For carburetor models, the filter element housing is installed directly on the carburetor.

Replacing the cabin filter on a viburnum

Welcome! Cabin filter - the name itself speaks for itself, namely the cabin filter, thanks to it all the air entering the car that flies into the car when driving is cleaned of dust, leaves and unnecessary dirt, but over time the filter becomes dirty and becomes very dirty, due to with this, it is no longer purified air that flies into the cabin, but all the dust that has accumulated on this filter over the entire time, because of this it becomes very unpleasant to drive and you are constantly thinking about replacing this filter with a new one.

Note! The filter is easy to change and all you need to take from the tools is: A set of several screwdrivers and, if possible, also take a vacuum cleaner and be sure to have a rag, the vacuum cleaner is very convenient to collect all the dirt from the place where the filter was installed, therefore, when you turn on the stove , it will no longer get into the interior of your car!

Where is the cabin filter located? To get to it, remove the right facing (As the car is moving) you will need to lift the brush that cleans the glass, then use a flat screwdriver or a knife (we don’t recommend using a knife, because the plastic is soft and, besides, it’s black and therefore if you do not do the work carefully, then at best you will scratch it, and at worst you will pierce it) pry off the two plugs indicated by the blue arrows, after prying them off, take them out and unscrew the two screws that were located behind these plugs, besides this, open the hood and find two more screws (there are four in total) that secure the right facing and then slightly lifting it (see small photo), remove it completely from the car, behind this facing there will be a protective cover (you will see it immediately) by removing it, you will provide access for yourself to the cabin filter in the car, you will learn more about how to remove it as you read this article.

When should you change the cabin filter? It all depends on you, if the air in your cars has ceased to be fresh (It has become dusty, it has become difficult to breathe, etc.), then you can already think about replacing this filter with a new one, but in general people recommend replacing it once every 15,000 thousand km. but at the same time, you also need to take into account the fact on which roads the car is driven, if on dusty roads or just in a metropolis where the surrounding air is polluted, then this filter must be replaced much more often (For example, once every 10,000 thousand km), in addition you need to take into account There is also the fact that the stove is connected to the cabin filter when working (It is only connected to it, there is nothing else the filter is needed for) and if you want to turn on the stove, then all the air will pass through this filter and if it is dirty, it will get into the cabin, and besides all this, the stove will also work worse (it will be harder for it, because air will be much more reluctant to pass through a clogged filter).

Note! Any filter elements have one goal, to prevent debris and dust from passing through the place where they are installed, but at the same time they also take in all this dirt and dust, and over time (When the filter is full of dirt) it ejects of all dirt, this process is called desorption (It only occurs in carbon filters; cabin filters, by the way, are mostly carbon) in connection with this process, it throws most of the dust and dirt into the car interior, so do not spare money on this thing and change it as often as possible, because in addition to dust, it also absorbs toxic emissions from the exhaust systems of passing cars, which are subsequently also sent into the car interior if you do not replace the filter with a new one!

When to replace the filter

Naturally, the filter element someday becomes unusable and requires replacement. For VAZ-2110 cars, the manufacturer strongly recommends replacing it after every 20 thousand kilometers. If the car is operated in conditions of increased pollution, it is better to carry out this procedure after 10 thousand km, when the engine oil and oil filter are replaced.

It also happens that the VAZ-2110 air filter becomes unsuitable for further work much earlier. In carburetor engines, for example, it can be filled with oil if the oil scraper rings fail and no longer cope with their task. In addition, the filter may suffer from mechanical damage or contact with fuel or water. In these cases, it must be replaced immediately.

Filters used in Lada Kalina

Viburnum uses three types of filters that are responsible for cleaning its liquid or air.

Viburnum filter:

  • Fuel;
  • Oily;
  • Air;

These categories include the following filters.

Fuel:

  • Fuel pump mesh;
  • Fine fuel filter;

Oil:

  • Oil purification filter;

Air:

  • Engine air filter;
  • Cabin filter;

Each of these filters strictly performs its own functions, and contamination of each of them negatively affects the operation of the area in which it is installed.

Features of choice

Selecting a VAZ-2110 air filter today does not present any problem. To do this, you don’t even need to take it with you to the store or market. It is enough to tell the seller the car model and engine type (carburetor or injection), and he will offer you a choice of several products from different manufacturers.

Let us immediately note that the best option would be an original filter element produced by AvtoVAZ, but you can also purchase and install worthy analogues, such as Bosch, Mann or Filtron.

Zero resistance filter element

There is another type of filter element for injection engines - a filter with zero air resistance. This is a kind of tuning element designed to improve air intake. The filter element material here offers virtually no resistance to incoming air. This significantly increases engine power and throttle response. But such tuning has three disadvantages:

  • the price of the “nulevik” is significantly higher than that of a conventional filter;
  • high fuel consumption;
  • need for replacement after every 5-7 thousand mileage.

Installation of VAZ-2110 filter (injection engine)

Now let's figure out how to install the air filter yourself, what you will need for this.

  • screwdriver with Phillips bit;
  • key to 10;
  • damp cloth or sponge to remove dust;
  • new filter.

We place the car on a flat surface, open the hood, disconnect the negative terminal from the battery, find the filter element housing and the corrugation going to the engine in the engine compartment.

At the rear of the body there is a pipe for the VAZ-2110 air filter, onto which a corrugation is placed. It contains the connector for the mass air flow sensor (MAF). Disconnect this connector. Loosen the clamp on the pipe and disconnect the corrugation.

Using a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the 4 screws securing the filter housing cover, remove it and set it aside. We remove the used filter element.

Use a damp cloth or sponge to wipe the inside surface of the case and lid, removing dirt and dust. We put the new filter in place. We install the housing cover, tighten the screws, connect the corrugation, and connect the sensor connector. We put the ground terminal on the battery, start the engine, check its operation.

Carburetor engine

The technology for changing the filter on a carburetor engine is the same. Only the lid is removed in a slightly different way.

  1. Using a wrench, you need to unscrew the nut in the middle of the lid and unfasten the 4 fastening latches on the sides.
  2. Next, the cover is also removed (there is no pipe, so you can safely put it on the ground), the old filter is removed, the housing is cleaned of dirt, and a new part is installed.
  3. The cover is placed back on the body and secured with a nut and side fasteners. Be sure to check whether the lid fits tightly to the body. If the fit is not tight, gaps will appear. Through which untreated dirty air will enter the engine.

Installation of air filter VAZ-2110 (carburetor)

In cars with a carburetor engine, the procedure for replacing the filter element is much simpler. The only tools and tools you will need here are a 10mm wrench and a rag.

We place the car on a flat surface, lift the hood, and find the filter housing. It has several spring latches that secure the lid. We snap them off and unscrew the nut on the central stud of the cover with a size 10 wrench. Lift the lid, take out the old filter element, and throw it away. Remove dirt and dust from the inner surface of the case with a rag.

Kalina oil filter

An oil filter is used to clean the oil from debris that has been cut off during engine operation, such as chips or scale. The filter is a cylinder inside, which has a special oil-resistant filter paper, passing through which the oil is cleaned. The filter also has a check valve that retains oil and prevents it from draining from the cylinder head.

The oil filter must be changed every time the engine oil is changed.

Symptoms of a poor quality or clogged oil filter

On Kalina, if the oil filter is clogged, the following malfunctions are possible:

  • Loss of oil pressure in the internal combustion engine;
  • Noisy operation of the internal combustion engine;
  • On 16-valve engines, knocking of hydraulic compensators is possible;

If your car shows such signs of breakdown, you need to change the oil and filter.

Do-it-yourself installation of a zero-resistance filter

The installation process of the “nulevik” is also quite simple and can be done independently. To do this you will need a set of keys and a Phillips screwdriver.

Under the hood we find the VAZ-2110 air filter housing. Disconnect the ground terminal on the battery. Disconnect the MAF connector. Using a screwdriver, loosen the clamp screw and remove the corrugation going to the engine.

Using a 10mm wrench (preferably a socket wrench), unscrew the nuts securing the mass air flow sensor to the filter housing. We dismantle the filter housing and remove it.

Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the screw securing the ground wire to the cylinder head. Under this screw we install the bracket for fastening the air flow sensor that comes with the filter. We mount the sensor to the bracket using a 10mm bolt. The connection must be sufficiently rigid, otherwise the mass air flow sensor will fail due to vibration.

We attach the corrugation to the back of the sensor and fix it by clamping the clamp. We put the filter itself on the front of the mass flow sensor and press its pipe using a clamp. We connect the sensor connector, connect the terminal.

For normal and long-term operation of the power unit, timely replacement of the air filter is important. It cleans the air of dust and abrasive particles, which causes it to gradually clog.

During operation, the throughput decreases and the engine begins to “choke.” Because of this, the revs fluctuate, the car significantly loses dynamics, and gasoline consumption increases. This is why timely replacement of the filter element is so important for a vehicle.

ATTENTION! A completely simple way to reduce fuel consumption has been found! Don't believe me? An auto mechanic with 15 years of experience also didn’t believe it until he tried it. And now he saves 35,000 rubles a year on gasoline! Read more"

When is it necessary to change?

The main purpose of the air filter is to clean the incoming air flow from the surrounding air from dust, dirt, pollen and other contaminants. Paper, foam rubber, felt or cloth can be used as a filter material. There are special zero resistance filters that allow you to increase engine power by 3-5%. It makes sense to install a zero filter on sports cars.

Zero resistance consumable

Over time, any filter, including zero-resistance filters, becomes dirty. The service life of the filter element is affected by the degree of environmental pollution and operating conditions.

When the filter element becomes dirty, the following problems arise:

  • the throughput of the filter material decreases;
  • fuel consumption increases;
  • the quality of the fuel-air mixture entering the cylinders deteriorates;
  • Engine power drops.

From a dirty consumable, abrasive particles can enter the cylinders and damage the surfaces of rubbing parts.

To eliminate the problems that have arisen, it is necessary to either clean the dirty element or replace it with a new one. The advantage of a zero-resistance filter is the fact that it is enough to wash the product with a special composition and it restores its properties.

It is advisable to replace it after 15,000 kilometers. When operating a car in a metropolis or rural area with dirt roads, it is better to replace it after 5-7 thousand kilometers.

Article number and cost of the original air filter VAZ 2110 and its analogues

On a VAZ 2110 car, one of two types of filter is used, depending on whether a carburetor or an injector is used in the power supply system of the power plant. On cars of the first years of production, an air filter is used, the article number of which is 21010110910002. The price for it is 120-235 rubles.

On a VAZ 2110 with an injector, the original air filter 2112-1109080 is used. Its cost ranges from 220 to 300 rubles. The consumable has a completely different shape compared to 21010110910002. Therefore, the filters are not interchangeable.

Third-party manufacturers produce analogues of native filters for both carburetor and injection versions of the car. Many alternative options have good quality at a very attractive price. The tables select the best analogues of the original consumables, which perform well on the VAZ 2110.

Air filter 2109. Pan. Dimensions. Correspondence.

I made a pyramid out of plasticine, placed it in the air purifier body, buried the lid, and snapped the latches.

Pyramid (approximately).

He pulled out the crumpled pyramid and measured it. Measurements were taken three times.

Measuring a crumpled pyramid 1.

Measurement of crumpled pyramid 2

As they wrote in the magazine Behind the Wheel No. 6 for 2002, “ONE THIRD FILTER” is the nominal height of the air cleaner housing (60 mm). But checking the height of real bodies on different cars showed that “off-scale” heights of up to 63 mm also occur.

Additional measurements:

  • The height of my case closed only with “latches” (the nut is not tightened) is 64.5 mm.
  • The height of my case, closed with latches and a screwed nut, is 63.65 mm.
  • In my case, a tightened nut (I have a wing nut) gives a maximum pressure of 1 mm.
  • Not every normal filter will work properly on any car. The fact is that the current OST 37.001.491–90 prescribes a height for filters (59–63) ± 1.5 mm. In other words, everything that falls within the range of 57.5–64.5 (scatter is more than 10% of the filter height) is considered normal.
  • In general, it became clear that we either need to take filters from 65 mm. height, either change the pan, or make a rubber gasket under the filter.
  • In the same “Behind the Wheel” test, domestic filters did not shine with quality, so I looked at what I could choose with a height of 65 mm. from import.

I didn’t dig particularly deep, but it turned out that there weren’t many options.

Height of different filters

As a result, I bought a MANN C2443/1. Honest 65 mm. with a slight plus. I took it from ISNEXT (formerly EXIST).

As for the FRAM CA660PL filter, despite the manufacturer’s stated height of 61 mm, my copy has a height of 57-58 mm. The currently installed “Behind the Wheel” filter is 63 mm.

I bought the filter at EMEX. So it’s hard to say whether it’s a defect or a fake.
