Front struts Lada Kalina: features of choice

Which is better to install front struts on Lada Kalina

AvtoVAZ installed SAAZ oil struts . Some rode them before they were worn out, others immediately after purchasing the car, exchanged them for others of better quality.

Over many years of operation of the car on Russian roads, the following conclusions can be drawn in relation to the racks applicable to it:

The editorial car has 47,000 km mileage. The stands are still original. No leaks.

Gas-oil struts KYB – catalog number: 365507.

ASOMI racks for Kalina are available in 4 versions: ComfortCLASSIC, ComfortPRO, CROSS, and SPORT.

Regular oil struts from ElastoMag (by the way, the company also produces support bearings).

Front struts SS20

One of the main advantages of the SS20 front struts is that there is no need to install parts at a service station to maintain the warranty. In addition, they show good indicators of quality, reliability and service life.

SS20 are quite expensive stands, but what can you do - you have to pay for quality.

Other advantages of SS20 racks include:

The disadvantages of the SS20 front struts are 10-15% defective parts (according to reviews). After a run of 1,000 km . they begin to “flow”, they begin to “ break through ” - this is if it’s a marriage!

Front struts 1119 and 1118 - what's the difference

Some owners are confused by the question: what is the difference between racks marked 1118 and 1119? Today the answer is obvious:

Our hatchback has a cone-shaped spring.

The only difference is the spring cups welded to the strut. The parts are interchangeable and can be installed on cars of any body type. Barrel-shaped ones hold lateral loads better.

Struts from Lada Granta

New grant struts assembled with supports.

Fairly frequent replacement. But you will have to buy more spare parts:

  • Front spring cup from Lada Priora (original Kalinovskaya does not fit)
  • Compression stroke buffer and protective cover . Suitable for VAZ-2110, Grants, Priors
  • Compression (rebound) stroke limiter - similar to VAZ-2110, Grants and Prioras

Equipping your vehicle with a new set of shock absorbers will improve its handling, ride quality and overall safety. Age and use wear down the suspension system of any vehicle, and at some point you will have to replace components. Choosing the best shock absorbers is important to ensure complete control of your vehicle while it's on the road. If you notice that your steering wheel is vibrating, that your car is bouncing a lot after hitting a pothole, or that your car can no longer move in a straight line, it's probably time to replace your shock absorbers.

Today we looked at a wide range of different shock absorbers and figured out which struts are best to install on a Kalina station wagon. We want you to be safe on the road, so we made sure these shocks are made from high-quality materials, provide a quality equal to or better than the original factory ride quality, and feature advanced speed damping systems that will adjust to your conditions. driving. In this article we will help you find out which front struts are best to install on a Kalina 1118 station wagon.

When to change shock absorbers on Lada Kalina?

Shock absorbers should be replaced if they show signs of mechanical damage or are worn out. Worn seals, oil leaks, operating noises or a characteristic rocking motion of the vehicle are obvious signs to replace them.

Sometimes, when shock absorbers are used, the ABS system is activated much earlier. This should also affect the driver, as in the event of an emergency on the road, he may have trouble maintaining control of the vehicle.

If testing results in shock absorber efficiency below 20 percent, they must be replaced. However, if this result is above 40 percent, then you can safely ride them.

Step-by-step algorithm for replacing the front strut

Before work, we stock up on tools with approximately the following “composition”:

  • keys: “13”, “17” and “19”;
  • a key that allows you to remove the wheels;
  • device for removing springs;
  • jack and ball pin remover.

Important! Shock absorbers are replaced in pairs!

  1. We install the car on a level area.
  2. Loosen the front wheel mounting bolts on one side of the car. We install wheel chocks under the rear wheels.
  3. We hang up the corresponding side of the LADA Kalina, not forgetting about the safety supports.
  4. To prevent an accidental short circuit in the electrical network, remove the terminals from the battery.
  5. If the design contains an ABS system sensor, then dismantle it.
  6. Let's move on to pressing out the ball pin. Here we recommend abandoning the hammer and using the specified puller.
  7. The strut is attached to the steering knuckle with two bolts through a bracket (or bracket). Before unscrewing the fastener, you need to mark the position of the upper fastener. This will allow you to maintain the approximate wheel camber after assembly.

Attention! Subsequent checking of wheel alignment angles at the station is mandatory.

  1. We unscrew the fasteners indicated here and remove it from the bracket.
  2. We move under the hood and unscrew the 3 nuts that hold the shock absorber in the spar support cup. We hold the stand from below (you can get an assistant) to prevent it from falling out after the support fasteners “surrender.”
  3. We disassemble the rack assembly using a tensioning device for the spring.
  4. We install the new product and put everything back together.

We proceed similarly on the second side. The struts in the rear suspension are changed using a similar technology.

Which struts to take: oil or gas?

To know which racks are best to put on a viburnum, you need to understand their types.

There are two types of automotive shock absorbers commonly used: oil (twin-tube) shock absorbers and oil and gas (mono-tube) shock absorbers.

Oil shock absorbers consist of two tubes located one inside the other. The outer pipe acts as a housing and, in addition to the inner pipe, also contains hydraulic oil. This oil is a factor that dampens the vibrations that occur when the wheels move over the surface and reaches the inner pipe thanks to special valves. The inner tube of the oil shock absorber contains the piston, and it is there that all the work is done to dampen vibrations.

Oil shock absorbers are valued for their simple design, low price (due to their simple design) and high durability. Unfortunately, they also have some disadvantages, such as, for example, insufficiently short (under certain circumstances) response time and linear damping strength.

The monotube shock absorber, also called a high-pressure or gas shock absorber, was patented in 1953 by Christian Boursier de Carbone. The monotube shock absorber consists of an expansion tank, a working cylinder, a piston, a piston rod, a piston rod guide and a foot valve. For proper operation of the entire system, the shock absorber is not completely filled with oil, but in the lower part there is additional compressed gas. The movable piston prevents gas from mixing with liquid in the shock absorber. This solution also made it possible to increase the gas pressure to 20-30 MPa, thanks to which the monotube shock absorbers are characterized by very good vibration damping, quiet operation and low dead weight.

How to determine if shock absorbers are faulty

Often, traces of oil appear and disappear over time, and then, when the driver notices a loss of controllability, the strut becomes dry again. To determine its serviceability, you need to grab the roof of the car and try to swing it strongly.

Serviceable shock absorbers should stop the body already on the second swing. If the car continues to rock, the struts need to be replaced.

The problem must be diagnosed at the first sign. There are several symptoms that indicate a damaged shock absorber:

  • Knock when driving or extraneous sounds in the suspension. This problem occurs extremely rarely. As a rule, this implies destruction inside the strut housing and the rod simply begins to hit the housing, making unpleasant knocking noises. This sound will appear when driving over both large and small irregularities and will haunt the car owner no matter how much the car rocks.
  • Deterioration in controllability. The most dangerous and obvious sign of shock absorber failure. As you know, struts are needed to dampen body vibrations that occur when suspension springs operate. If these vibrations are not suppressed, the car begins to sway strongly at high speed and the wheels may briefly lose traction with the road surface. It is worth noting that this malfunction is quite dangerous.
  • Leaks on the rack body. Deterioration in controllability occurs due to internal damage to the shock absorber and its depressurization. Traces of leaking oil, which is the main shock-absorbing component of this part, may appear on the rack.

If, after all, the reason for the knocking on Kalina is in the shock absorbers, then you should select the right new spare parts. Don’t even try to restore them; doing so is impractical, labor-intensive and expensive.

As a rule, shock absorbers are not replaced individually, only in pairs.

Rating of the best shock absorbers for Lada Kalina

These are the most expensive shock absorbers, but they are also the most durable.

They are used on almost all types of vehicles, from motorcycles to station wagons. Shock absorbers differ from other models in that they have the ability to adjust properties. The car owner can adjust the stiffness and adapt them to driving on any surface, from smooth asphalt to off-road.

The durability of these shock absorbers is almost twice as long as that of their “competitors”. All shock absorbers have passed quality checks.

There's no substitute for convenience, and installing a MILLION PARTS shock absorber kit is as easy as it gets. No special tools are required for installation other than a basic set of wrenches and screws.

Ease of installation does not mean simplicity of design. These struts are fully functioning structural components and shock absorbers that will absolutely improve the ride quality and responsiveness of your vehicle over worn out struts. The simple installation process allows you to easily replace your struts in less than two hours, saving you time and money that would otherwise be spent at the auto repair shop.

Bilstein Monotube Shock Absorber

Recognized as the industry's best, Bilstein monotube shocks are designed to handle vehicles on and off-road. Reviews praise their ability to maintain OEM levels of ride comfort and stability. This is a testament to the build quality and design of the shock absorbers.

Look around and you will find Bilstein shock absorbers for many vehicles on the market. Maintaining a balance between off-road capability and on-road stability is as much an art as it is a science, Bilstein has managed to remain a leader in this market because they have consistently produced dampers that can maintain this balance.

These shock absorbers use a patented speed-sensing piston that reacts to road conditions to improve stability in bad weather.

MILLION PARTS 2 Piece Complete

The post, coil, spring and fasteners are included in this kit and installation is just as easy.

Whereas the other suspension components described in this article are just individual parts for a complete suspension, these complete assemblies are fully functional shock absorber replacements that require no additional components. In addition to providing shock absorption, dampers also serve as structural components of your vehicle's suspension. This full-featured unit is well reviewed by consumers and comes at a great price from the manufacturer.

Best Twin-Tube: Rubicon RXT Twin Tube Shock Absorber

Designed with all the necessary characteristics in mind, these shock absorbers were created to withstand the off-road conditions that Russian drivers are so accustomed to. Long rides on your wheels wear out your shock absorbers, and Rubicon Express dampers can handle that.

Those who have installed these shock absorbers on their vehicles have applauded their perfect fit, although these shock absorbers can be installed on other vehicles with a little effort. Each Rubicon Express damper is tuned for specific applications to provide maximum performance without compromising ride quality. The oversized, impact-resistant housing provides greater throughput, and dual welded rings ensure maximum service life under heavy-duty conditions.

What racks should I put on the viburnum? How to choose them correctly?

If it's time to replace your shock absorbers, first consider what you'll choose. Gas and oil shock absorbers are most commonly available in the market. They work on the principle of oil, which is responsible for damping. The first is additionally supported by nitrogen. This solution speeds up the reaction, the shock absorber sticks to the road much better.

The cheapest shock absorbers should not cost more than 3,000-5,000 rubles per set, but you should think about buying slightly more expensive parts. It is better to avoid products from Chinese companies or those completely unknown manufacturers. A good quality shock absorber that will last you about 150,000 kilometers will cost about 4,000-6,000 rubles per unit. Of course, the issue of durability depends, first of all, on the roads we drive on.

Lada Kalina Sedan › Logbook › Installation of strut supports on Lada Kalina with Grants

Hi all! I want to tell you a story about replacing the strut supports on a viburnum and installing supports with grants. It would seem that what is the problem here? Take it and put it on! I’ll digress a little from this sparkling topic and add some lyrics. The time had come to repair the chassis of the Lada Kalina car, and I wanted something new. New struts, bought a long time ago, were available, there was one problem, they were for a cone-shaped spring, and the old struts had a barrel-shaped spring. I went to see a traveler I knew, and luckily he had a pair of pyramid-shaped springs in excellent condition. Paid 1t. wooden ones, I enthusiastically went into auto parts to buy the rest of the spare parts. Supports, strut supports, ball bearings, interior blocks, and other crap for overhauling the chassis. I didn’t even consider the Kalinovsky stock supports as an option, because I wanted something new. I looked at the SS20-Kalina support, stock grant.

Having literally traveled all over the city, knocking off dozens of rapids, it was not possible to find exactly the same washer, and after searching, it was decided to install the Priora top washer.

I assembled the stand and installed it! I think this is all due to the poor quality of the puck. I checked everything and went. Everything is normal, what a joy, but a week later the same thing happens, but on the right side. Now, without thinking for a long time in a bad mood, I do the same thing, but on the right side. I observe the same thing, the prop is normal, but the washer is screwed.

Okay, I’ll replace this nasty rubber band, but it’s not a fact that it will help 100%, once again I wouldn’t have the patience to withstand such a mess. I started looking for information about granto supports and racks on the net. I didn’t find anything, the auto parts stores shrug their shoulders, but in my heart there is hope that the glass under the support should be made differently, because the rubber part is larger and located lower. Although everyone in the stores and tradesmen say that it’s like crazy there, of course I didn’t believe them and didn’t know what to do.

One day I went into another store and saw a glass under the prop with a Priora and I realized that’s it, it’s what I need.

I bought it and bought a spring cushion with a step to go with it.

I did the same with the other side. On this note we can end the story. The flight for three months is normal. The car on Grant's supports handles better on the highway, better in turns, and smoother on cobblestone roads. The game is worth the candle if you read my article and don’t make such mistakes. It’s funny that the walkers didn’t know about this, everyone claimed that these were defective supports :-D. The chassis works great! Sorry for the long story, I wanted to describe in more detail the process of installing Granta supports on Kalina so that you don’t have so many problems with it. And so let's sum it up. To install grant strut supports we need: 2 grant strut supports (ANVIS or BMRT) - 460 rubles for 1 piece 2 cups for the Prior support bearing - 200 rubles for 1 piece 2 support bearings (stock or SFK, but not SS20) - 380 rubles for 1 piece 4 Priorov washers per rack - 40 rubles for 1 piece And most importantly, pay attention to what kind of spring you have. In general, the chassis repair, not counting the difficulties that arose, cost me 5.5 thousand rubles, this includes all the elements for a major overhaul (balls, eggs, daisies, steering tips, salen blocks, etc. If anyone is interested, here is a link to mine a former car on which this modification went through 60,000 and is still running. www.drive2.ru/l/9200477/ Thank you for your attention!

When do you need to change struts on a car and why?

First of all, a shock absorber (shock absorber strut or telescopic strut) is necessary in order to press the wheels as tightly as possible to the road when driving over uneven surfaces, and also to effectively absorb shocks, shocks, dampen vibrations, etc.

Naturally, when subjected to constant loads, shock absorbers inevitably fail. If you add to this the poor condition of the road surface, replacing struts can become a fairly frequent procedure.

As for VAZ owners, the racks on the Lada Kalina were no exception. In practice, this car has oil shock absorbers from the factory. To put it simply, the Kalina front strut is a solution where oil is pumped in as a working damper.

Although the stated service life is about 80-100 thousand km, after 40-60 thousand km. the rack often begins to “sweat”, which indicates an oil leak. If the stand was wet at first, and then traces of liquid disappeared, this indicates that there is almost no oil in it and it needs to be replaced.

Let's also add that gas shock absorbers have gas instead of oil. Of course, it is impossible to notice an oil leak, since it is not there and the racks will always be dry. There are also so-called gas-oil struts, which have both gas and oil inside.

  • One way or another, regardless of the type of shock absorbers, if they malfunction, you can notice that the car holds the road worse, a buildup has appeared, and the body tilts in corners. Also, when driving over uneven surfaces, you can hear the pillar knocking; all road defects are transmitted to the body, etc.

To quickly determine the complete failure of the rack, just press on the body in the part where it is installed. If the car rocks more than once, the struts need to be replaced. It is important to take into account that shock absorbers are replaced in pairs on the same axis.

For an accurate diagnosis, it is recommended to visit a vibration stand (a special stand for testing shock absorbers), where you can conduct a comprehensive check, assess the degree of wear of the struts, their performance in percentage terms, etc.

To summarize, the struts of Kalina or another car must be replaced if problems arise with the stability of the car on the road, there is rocking or leakage of working fluid, or the struts begin to knock. Also, with faulty struts, the car brakes worse and the braking distance increases.

The only thing is that a slight knock on the Lada Kalina strut is allowed in the cold season if the shock absorbers are oil-based. This is normal, as cold oil must first warm up when driving, after which the shock absorber should begin to function normally.
