The air filter, which is installed in the air intake tract of the car, is important for ensuring the process of optimal formation of the air-fuel mixture. If you neglect to replace this element in a timely manner, the engine faces serious consequences, which over time can result in expensive repairs. The popular domestic model Lada Kalina, which we are considering, is no exception.
Replacing the air filter on a viburnum
Welcome! Air filter - These are the lungs of a car that clean the air from various types of dirt and other substances so that it does not get into the car engine; even the smallest particles of dust when entering the car engine scratch the mirror part of the cylinder, and this has a very bad effect on the coefficient of friction. how it rises.
Note! In order to replace the air filter, you will need to take with you: A screwdriver with a Phillips head, with which you will unscrew the screws securing the filter cover!
Summary:
Where is the air filter located? It is very easy to understand where the filter itself is located, since it is located in a large plastic box, and it is very easy to notice it by opening the hood of the car engine; for clarity, this box (It is also called the air filter housing) is shown in the photo below with a red arrow.
When should you change the air filter? The filter on a car must be replaced only after traveling 30,000 km. (This is what the factory says), for carburetor cars this period is 2 times less, but this does not mean that the filter will need to be changed exactly after 15,000 km. in fact, the filter changes depending on the terrain you drive in, and if you live in heavy cities where the environment is not so good, then you will have to change the filter much more often than the manufacturer says, you can find more detailed figures in an article called: “Everything about the car air filter, why they are needed and when they need to be replaced.”
Do regular maintenance - help the engine!
Of course, this applies primarily to stable oil changes after a certain period of time and replacement of all kinds of filters according to the mileage of the car. And today we will talk about such a device, without which the work of the entire engine would be difficult. Of course, we will talk about the air filter.
What is an air filter for?
This filter is no longer helpful to you.
The engine air filter serves for timely air purification, as well as the formation of a fuel mixture in the engine. According to statistics, for every 100 kilometers driven, a car is capable of consuming from 11 to 16 cubic meters of atmospheric air, which undoubtedly contains particles of dust and dirt. And if there was no air filter in the car, then premature repair of the engine would be guaranteed.
How to replace the air filter on a VAZ 1117-VAZ 1119?
Note! While working with the filter, you will most likely (But in principle you don’t have to do this, it will just be a little more difficult to lift the air filter cover) you will have to disconnect the wire block from the Mass Air Flow Sensor, and when working with any electronics, as many already know, you need to turn off the power battery so that there is no short circuit and other problems with electronics in the future! (For information on how to de-energize the battery so that current no longer flows from it to the on-board network, see the article entitled: “Replacing the battery on a VAZ”, in paragraph number 1 everything is indicated there)
Removal: 1) At the very beginning of the operation (As we said earlier, in principle this can not be done), disconnect the wire block from the sensor (the same air flow sensor and the block that is connected to it are indicated by an arrow), and the wire block is disconnected from it quite easy, to do this you just need to press the latch that holds this block (the latch is located on the wiring block itself) and after that you will need to disconnect the block from the sensor and put it somewhere so that it does not interfere.
2) Now that the block is disconnected and there is nothing stopping you from lifting the cover, take a screwdriver in your hands and use it to unscrew the four screws that secure this cover (Indicated by arrows), and after unscrewing, lift it or take out the air filter that will be located inside the case.
Installation: Installation of a new filter occurs in the reverse order of removal, but when installing, pay attention to the fact that all filters on injection cars are installed along the air filter housing and not across, so when installing a new filter, pay attention to the corrugations that are present on it (They are indicated by arrows) , so these corrugations will have to go longitudinally to the filter housing, you can see more details about this in the video clip which is located at the very bottom of the article.
Note! So, we recommend that before installing a new filter, wipe the entire inside of the housing and the entire inside of the housing cover with a clean cloth to remove dust and dirt, since even after installing the filter, it can fly into the car engine and dust, as we said earlier, erases both sandpaper the mirror part of the cylinder, which has a very negative effect on the engine of your car!
Additional video clip: So that you can clearly see the process of replacing the filter (Visually it’s always easier to remember, and even better with practice you will remember everything), watch the video clip located just below, in which everything is described in detail.

Signs of a clogged air filter
Lada Kalina cars of the 1st and 2nd generations use a standard air filter made of paper impregnated with a special substance. The filter element traps all the smallest particles and prevents them from entering the engine cylinders.
Over time, the area of the filter paper becomes covered with more dust, and the throughput decreases. The fuel-air mixture of the engine becomes richer, gasoline begins to burn poorly and the engine “troubles.”
How to choose a filter element for Kalina 1 and 2
Many people choose an air filter so that it lasts as long as possible. But this is the wrong criterion. One of the most important parameters of an air filter is its ability to trap a larger number of small particles.
Only a good filter from a trusted manufacturer can sufficiently clean the air entering the collector. Before choosing a filter, you must use one of the following catalog numbers (articles):
- 21120-1109080-00;
- 21120-1109080-02;
- 21120-1109080-06;
- 21120-1109080-03;
All filters with these numbers are the same and are suitable for cars of the Samara, Samara II, Lada Niva, Lada Granta and Lada Kalina 1 and 2 families.
The next stage is the selection of manufacturers. The best in terms of price/quality are:
- Original – AVTOVAZ – 363 rubles;
- Big Filter – 219 rubles;
- Bosch – 327 rubles;
How long does a Kalina air filter last?
The replacement interval for the Lada Kalina air filter, declared by the manufacturer, is 15 thousand kilometers. In simple words, the filter element on the first and second generation Lada Kalina should be changed every time the oil in the car is changed.
In fact, the engine oil is changed more often - once every 7-10 thousand kilometers. Accordingly, the filter element should be changed along with an oil change and other consumables.
Not only the regulations determine the period for replacing the air filter. The service life of the element is also affected by the operating conditions of the vehicle:
- If the Lada Kalina is driven mainly in rural areas and country roads, the filter will become clogged with dust much earlier. Therefore, it needs to be checked for wear more often.
- In the case when the car is driven in the city and on paved roads, the service life of the filter element will be much longer.
It is worth considering the fact that bad filters will last much longer for one simple reason - they practically do not clog and allow grains of sand to enter the collector. A good filter will clog much earlier and protect engine parts.
Types of cabin filters
Evolution does not stand still, and neither does technology. In general, this is an old invention, but it has been used in cars for no more than 10 years.
Carbon cabin filter
Immediately after their appearance, such filters were installed only on expensive cars, mainly in the premium class. They have both advantages and disadvantages.
Pros of carbon filters
- Filters out unpleasant odors. Such a filter is capable of capturing not only dust particles, but also the smell of dampness, fuel and exhaust gases. They are especially useful in cities where gas pollution exceeds all standards;
- Some carbon cabin filters use silver ions. This will help further freshen the air in the cabin.
Disadvantages of carbon filters
- Relatively high price. Compared to a conventional paper cabin filter, it can be two to three times higher;
- Short service life. The carbon filter, as a rule, becomes clogged after just six months of operation, while for most cars the maintenance regulations require replacement after 10–15 thousand kilometers. Once the filter becomes clogged, it not only fails to cope with its direct responsibilities, but also begins to release all the odors that it previously absorbed.
Instructions for replacing the Lada Kalina air filter
You can replace this consumable in your car either at a service center or independently. For this operation you will need a minimum of tools and a new filter. The most important thing is to adhere to the sequence of all actions in the instructions.
Where is the air filter located on Kalina 1 and 2
It is worth noting that at least three engines were used on these cars:
- 1.4 – 16 valve;
- 1.6 – 8 valve;
- 1.6 – 16 valve.
Regardless of the modification, the filters on Kalina 2 or 1 are installed in the same place and are always the same:
What you need to change the air filter
First of all, you will need a standard set of tools and a new filter element for Kalina. It would be a good idea to get hold of a clean rag or compressed air.
The main tool you will need to complete the entire procedure is a simple Phillips screwdriver.
Removing the old Lada Kalina air filter
To dismantle the air filter on the Lada Kalina, unscrew the 4 screws securing the upper housing cover to the lower one. Next, remove the connector from the mass air flow sensor (MAF) and lift the air filter housing at the same time as the corrugation (pipe):
Remove the old filter element. Then you need to wipe the inside of the case from possible dust, or even better, blow everything with compressed air to 100% get rid of any contaminants.
Remember, this part of the engine power system must be kept clean!
Installing a new filter element
The installation procedure for the Kalina air filter is carried out in the reverse order of removal. The new air filter must be installed in the same way as the old one was installed, so that the paper faces down and the elastic band around the edges fits evenly into the grooves along the perimeter of the body.
After this, you just need to put the cover on top, install the connector on the mass flow sensor, and then tighten the four fastening screws.
This completes the replacement of this consumable.
Digesting garbage
In principle, these are not horror stories for dummies, but quite understandable and obvious things. Kalina consumes approximately 10-13 cubic meters of air over a 100 km run. You can imagine how much garbage and dust is contained in this amount of road air, especially if it is a country road. We have data that relates to well-maintained European roads. If you believe them, then on a typical European autobahn there is about 1 mg of dust per cubic meter of air, and in the area of construction sites and on dusty highways the silicon content can reach up to 40 mg/m³. Moreover, these are very approximate data from European laboratories, let alone our roads...
Lada Kalina 2 with a range of 100 km consumes about 13 m3 of air
This is understandable, but at the same time, the air filter on Kalina also serves as a muffler for excess noise created by the intake system when air is sucked in. The more difficult it is for the engine to obtain air for normal operation, the louder the intake system becomes. In addition, the air filter also regulates the temperature of the air entering the system. Due to the fact that the air is retained while passing through the filter paper, it heats up already at the intake stage. This is especially useful in wet weather and winter. Then the temperature difference in the intake tract will not be so significant.
What happens if you ignore the replacement?
Nothing good. The filter element will become clogged and the engine will work worse and worse every day until it finally “suffocates.” The engine may stall while driving and may not start again until the filter is replaced.
As a rule, this happens very rarely, because a clogged filter disrupts the operation of the engine, and this forces the driver to replace it in time.
The second unpleasant consequence is the entry of various small particles into the intake tract. As a rule, they are hard and get into the engine cylinders, scratching the working surface. As a result, scuffing occurs, which will subsequently affect compression and cause increased oil consumption.
In what cases is replacement necessary?
For a car, especially with an injector, it is very important what condition the air filter is in. For high-quality operation of an internal combustion engine, a large volume of air is required, much larger than fuel, which is taken from the environment. The purpose of the filter element is to clean this air from these contaminants, because the quality of the air-fuel mixture depends on its purity.
The filter is a filter paper folded into an accordion to increase the filtering surface. During operation, the pores of the filter become clogged, which reduces its throughput and deteriorates the quality of the air that comes from the environment. The air filter also acts as a device that reduces noise during air intake, as well as a thermostat. This is especially true in winter; the incoming air, passing through the filter element, heats up, so the temperature difference will not be so noticeable.
The following factors influence the frequency of replacement:
- quality of road surface;
- quality of the filter element;
- terms of Use.
According to manufacturers' recommendations, the filter material should be changed at least after 30 thousand kilometers or after a visual inspection if it is heavily contaminated.
If the car is operated on unpaved roads or in a metropolis with polluted air, the air filter must be changed after 15 thousand kilometers.
Old and new filters
Is it possible to clean an old air filter?
Many car owners, in order to save on maintenance, practice cleaning the filter element with compressed air.
Doing this is strictly prohibited.
A worn-out consumable has dried oil in the air filter, which has collected dust, which means that the efficiency of such an element is halved. In order not to harm the motor, it should not be cleaned, but replaced.
Only zero resistance filters can be cleaned or washed:
How to change the air filter on a Lada Kalina with your own hands?
The Lada Kalina engine air filter is a very important element of the car. Thanks to the presented auto parts, dust and other particles that can harm the operation of the car’s engine do not get into the inside of the engine. Replacing the air filter on a Lada Kalina car is required in order to maintain optimal performance characteristics of the car.
The operating principle of the designated device is extremely simple. During fuel combustion, a considerable volume of air is contained in the cylinders of a vehicle engine. It can exceed the volume of fuel by almost 15 times. Air enters the presented place, of course, from the outside, and with it, everything that is currently located around the car can enter the engine. This could be dust, sand, particles of water or asphalt, small parts of plants, and the like. And in order to clean the air entering the car engine, an air filter was created.
With the advent of new technologies, with the help of which mechanical engineering reached a new level, the air filter also changed. Over time, many components of the presented auto parts have changed, one of them is the material from which it is made. Throughout the entire time, the air filter is made of metal mesh, horsehair, and foam plastic. Currently, special paper is used in its production. The fibers of the presented paper are woven in such a way that it does not allow even the smallest particles to pass through. In addition, she is not afraid of moisture. The designated material is folded in a special way into an accordion—this creates a replaceable cassette (filter element) that is inserted into a plastic box.
The role of the filter in a car
The Lada Kalina engine requires about 12-14 cubic meters of air for every 100 km of travel. In the intake manifold, it is mixed with fuel sprayed by the injector nozzles. The mixture then enters the cylinder chambers, where it is burned. The optimal proportion of air to fuel ensures that the engine achieves the characteristics declared by the manufacturer. It is no secret that a large volume of dust, suspended dirt and other compounds enters the intake receiver along with the air. The role of the filter is to ensure high-quality cleaning of the intake air, because it is a kind of barrier in the path of these negative particles.
If there was no air filter, then all the suspended dirt would inevitably fall inside the engine cylinders, gradually settling on its walls and accumulating in the oil system. This would lead to scoring on the walls of the liners and liners, which would require a major overhaul.
Gradual clogging of the filter element leads to a deterioration in its throughput and, as a consequence, to air starvation of the LADA Kalina engine. This is fraught with the formation of carbon deposits on the parts of the valve assembly and elements of the cylinder-piston group, because such combustion will be characterized by the presence of a fuel-enriched mixture above the permissible limit. This inevitably leads to increased fuel consumption and a decrease in the power level of the unit. Also, exhaust gases are endowed with increased toxicity.
Why change the air filter on Lada Kalina?
When operating a LADA Kalina vehicle, after a certain period of time, the air filter begins to become dirty. This leads to the fact that its throughput deteriorates, due to which the air filter is no longer able to “supply” the required amount of purified air to the engine of a Lada Kalina car.
If the air purifier of a Lada Kalina vehicle is dirty, then as a result the fuel mixture is saturated with various impurities and dust, which leads to excessive fuel consumption. An air filter is not an expensive auto part. From a financial point of view, it is more profitable to buy a new air purifier than to overpay at gas stations. It should also be noted that as a result of contamination of the presented part, the load on the engine of the Lada Kalina increases. This may cause the vehicle's engine to stop working.
The vehicle's operating manual states that when servicing a vehicle, it is mandatory to replace the air filter. Service work of this kind is included in the maintenance regulations for the Lada Kalina. The period for mandatory maintenance is determined by the employees of the plant where the Lada Kalina was assembled. The key task of carrying out a technical inspection is to ensure that the vehicle is in good condition and continues to operate without interruption.
The official instructions from AvtoVAZ state that the air filter must be replaced every 3 thousand kilometers when operating a vehicle in urban areas, and every 1.5 thousand kilometers if the vehicle is used in off-road or rural areas. However, it is necessary to remember that the longer the air filter is left without replacement, the more dust accumulates on the surface of the air purifier, first on the outer side, and then on the inner side. And then, when there is too much dust, air can no longer pass into the engine, which leads to a loss of power.
Let's sum it up
At this point, the replacement of the air filter is completed, and the owner of the Lada Kalina has shown concern for his car and its environment. You can spend the next few thousand kilometers behind the wheel in complete peace of mind. And now it will be easy for you, because now you will know how to remove the filter, and accordingly how to change it.
