Volkswagen Polo is a model with more than forty years of history, which in its latest incarnation has consistently maintained demand in our country. It is not surprising that the assembly of the car for the Russian market was launched by the concern back in 2010 on the Kaluga assembly line.
Many cars are already out of factory warranty, and there is no point in taking them to an authorized dealer for maintenance. Considering that routine operations on this car do not cause serious difficulties, it would be most profitable not to go to the service center at all - for example, replacing the air filter of a Volkswagen Polo sedan takes literally a minute and is done literally with the tools at hand.
Air filter replacement procedure
The need to update the filter is caused by the following circumstances:
- If the filter on a Volkswagen Polo is heavily contaminated, poorly purified air leads to rapid wear of engine parts. This is explained by the fact that the dust contained in it resembles an abrasive in its properties. Expensive parts such as shaft bearings and piston group are subject to increased wear.
- Even with a new air filter, the efficiency of fuel use increases significantly, which after the change is consumed more economically. Timely updating of consumables allows you to simultaneously reduce the level of harmful emissions and extend the service life of the engine.
The frequency with which the air filter is updated is specified in the regulations.
Filters should be replaced every 15 thousand kilometers, or once a year.
In a real situation, the period may vary, which is due to the specific operating conditions of the machine.

The job of an engine air filter is to clean the air before it is combined with fuel. Contaminants accumulate in the parts, which can deteriorate the quality of the air-fuel mixture and shorten the service life of device parts. The Volkswagen Polo sedan air filter is supplied to the automaker's conveyor under two article numbers: 036129620H and 036129620J. There are no differences in the design, dimensions and shape of both spare parts. The only thing that distinguishes them is the country of production.
Original part for VW Polo sedan
The original consumable of the popular model consists of three compartments, providing high-quality cleaning of the air flow from large contaminants and the smallest particles. The spare part is used on all modifications of Polo with a 1.6 MPI engine, regardless of the year of manufacture.
- VAG 036129620H is produced abroad. Often this article contains a spare part manufactured by MANN-FILTER, which is the official supplier of the German conveyor. The component can be identified by the seal made of orange material.
- VAG 036129620J is a product manufactured in Russia. The production of components for the VW Polo Sedan is the company Big Filter, which indicates its own catalog number GB-8000 on the parts. The external difference between the domestic filter and the European one is the dark green rubber seal.
According to reviews from Polo owners, the foreign version with the letter H at the end is of higher quality than the Russian one with J, although they are produced using the same technology with the same dimensions and characteristics.
Dimensions of the Polo sedan air filter: 380 mm length, 190 mm width and 42 mm height.
As the German automaker recommends, the consumable element should be replaced at intervals of 30 thousand km. Under Russian operating conditions, experts advise updating the part more often.
Analogues of the original
Alternative options for 036129620H and 036129620J are the following products:
- C3880 from MANN-FILTER (Germany)
- AP 183/3, FILTRON (Poland)
- FA734, AMD (Korea).
The quality of the analogues is close to the original: they have good filter paper and tight-fitting rubber bands, which ensures the tightness of the structure and a high degree of air purification from dust.

Hello everyone. I bought a filter, but there was no original air filter. I had to take a BOSCH analogue. As it turned out, it was Made in Italy, and the original was Made in Russian. Now think about it.
BOSCH is cheaper by the way.

You can install both the original filter and its analogues. They are completely identical and differ only in prices and manufacturers.

Exhaust manifold device
An exhaust manifold is an element of a car's exhaust system through which internal combustion products are discharged. In order for the fuel-air mixture to enter the cylinders faster, the pipes and chambers of the exhaust manifold are purged. There are two types of devices installed on modern cars: solid and tubular manifolds. The first samples are cast iron products with short tubes combined into one common chamber. Exhaust gas removal is slower than with tubular units, but the low cost of the devices compensates for this disadvantage. Tubular exhaust manifolds are more expensive than solid ones, but the steel structure of the internal combustion engine element copes much more effectively with the “extradition” of combustion products.

The Kaluga Automobile Plant installs tubular samples on the Polo sedan. The most important “neighbor” of the exhaust manifold is the catalytic converter. It is designed to reduce the toxicity of exhaust gases. It is considered “main” because it is not cheap on the automobile market. The original part together with the manifold for the Polo sedan costs well over 50 thousand rubles. Preserving the environment is an expensive pleasure.
Between the tubes and the combustion chamber on the outer surface lies a heat shield, which is attached to the device with two flat-head bolts. It plays the role of a savior, protecting the device from the formation of cracks in the case and the ingress of moisture, which in the worst case can cause breakdown of the device. The original with article number 036 253 041 CR will cost owners of the Polo sedan about 2,000 rubles.
There is a special gasket 03C 253 039 H in front of the tubes connected to the engine cylinders. For a German sedan, the price tag is set at 300-350 rubles. The gasket, along with the entire weight of the device, is supported by 9 hex nuts. You don’t need to buy any of them, of course, so if you decide to replace the device, you need to purchase samples with part numbers N 908 946 01 or WHT 000 001 N.
It is more profitable to buy an exhaust manifold for a German sedan as a kit than to assemble the parts separately. The unit in online stores costs about 2,300 rubles. (without neutralizer of course).
Wear and tear of spare parts is common for cars. The exhaust manifold has the same problem. Russian roads often become an insurmountable obstacle for these far from fragile devices. Cracks, chips and other deformations are the physical side of the coin, which in most cases can be accompanied by unpleasant pops from under the bottom of the car.
Many owners of the Polo sedan solve this problem by welding: they remove the part from the car and weld the resulting hole. But, as a rule, on a German sedan the problem is not solved in this way, since literally after a few months the “seam” begins to separate. Therefore, if a crack forms on the case, it is best to replace the device with a new one.

Another problem is a clogged exhaust system. The inability to efficiently and effectively remove combustion products, resulting from the formation of carbon deposits on the internal surfaces of the pipes and chamber, leads to the destruction of the exhaust system. Pops escaping from the exhaust pipe are a clear confirmation of a malfunction in the system. Excessive contamination of the entire structure can be caused by various reasons. Most often, the car begins to “sneeze”, spitting pops into the atmosphere, due to the use of low-quality leaded gasoline, from which no motorist is insured. Filling in engine oil with a high content of sulfur and phosphorus from unverified manufacturers can also cause nasty popping noises.
Replacing the air filter on Polo
An experienced specialist will need no more than half an hour. The list of tools required to carry out these operations is quite small. It includes a Phillips screwdriver and a rag.
The order of operations performed when removing the air filter with your own hands is as follows:
- The crankcase ventilation supply hose is removed from the housing (see photo).
- After this, the protective cover is dismantled, for which you need to unscrew the entire set of bolts securing it using a Phillips screwdriver or a screwdriver.
There is no need to remove them from the holes in the lid.
- At the next disassembly step, you will need to forcefully move it in the direction of travel of the vehicle, and then remove it from engagement with the latches on the rear.
- Lift the near edge and pull it towards you.
- After the cover is removed, you should turn it over and remove the old air filter from the retaining casing.
- After removing the contaminated element, you should evaluate its condition and, if necessary, install a new product (the appearance of both is shown in the photograph).
- Before installing a fresh filter, you need to wipe all contaminated areas with a previously prepared rag. All dismantled parts are assembled in the reverse order of removal.
What tools will you need?
Even if you are a beginner, replacing the air filtration element in a Volkswagen Polo Sedan yourself will take no more than 30 minutes of your time. And a minimum of tools, of which you only need:
- crosshead screwdriver;
- rags.
