Self-replacement of the Lada Kalina thermostat step-by-step instructions

Like any normal story, it happened at night, of course. I took a friend home and felt something was wrong. The fans do not turn off, and for quite a long time. In general, I turned the heater on to maximum and drove home, trying not to heat it too much. The lower hose is cold, the temperature is about a hundred. I think there is no need to explain to you what happened, dear friends. I didn't want to go under warranty. Because there is simply no time. And what would they give me there? Same thermostat? I decided to do everything on my own at a time convenient for me. By the way, this incident was not a shock to me. Exactly the same story happened to my parents in their new car with a mileage of approximately 500 km. Also at night, only on the way to the hero city of Moscow. I climbed here at the Kalina Club and looked at the book. The plan was this: buy a thermoelement, antifreeze, and at the same time upgrade the cooling system, because... I was very impressed by this article www.lkforum.ru/showthread.php?t=41258, and this morning I heard those same streams in the stove.

The search for the thermoelement did not lead to anything. Everywhere I visited, only the thermostat assembly was sold. It’s clear that I already have a VAZ, and it’s jammed. Therefore, it was decided to buy something else. Of the others in the foreseeable space, only Luzar LT 0118 was found. A friend immediately rejected the part - the reviews are not very good. Well, actually, I’m used to believing my own experience, and the 2-year guarantee for this product looks quite life-affirming. Although it certainly won’t last two years, that’s my personal humble opinion.

At the same time, I was looking for Sintec antifreeze, which was used to fill the cooling system at the factory, as evidenced by the sticker on the expansion tank.

Antifreeze was found in the same store where the thermostat was found, two steps from the base. This is fate, I thought. They can now live together happily ever after.

Replacing the thermostat didn't bother me much. This is done relatively quickly and simply. But installing a water seal on a steam hose, despite the simplicity of the idea, required more time, the availability of some materials, and probably luck. In general, I really like non-standard tasks. Because when you find their solution, you feel a little like a winner. And if the solution turns out to be simple and elegant, then the pleasure is many times greater.

In short, I bought from Krepezh two pieces of hoses of a more or less suitable diameter, as it seemed to me, several bolts, including a banjo bolt from the front brakes of a classic, a similar bolt from some kind of hydraulics, a new expansion tank for experiments and got to work .

I cut off the upper part of the steam exhaust hose fitting on the tank

So, the initial repair parameters, and the task is as follows: replacing the Kalina 8 valve thermostat.

We will not go into the intricacies of the design and use of the thermostat. Let us only note that it is an important component (regulator) in the car engine cooling system. The main sign of its malfunction is engine overheating. Therefore, this unit must be replaced.

It should be noted that independent replacement of components and assemblies will not only save money (in some cases, significant sums of money), but also gain useful skills that may be useful in the future. In addition, there is no need to pay money for a job that is quite simple and feasible for many car enthusiasts.

Characteristics of the Lada Kalina thermostat

The thermostat is an important engine cooling system; it occupies a place between the radiator and the cylinder block of the power unit. By design, this is a housing with an automatic valve, which, when the coolant is heated to a certain temperature, opens a large circulation circuit through the main cooling radiator. By closing the large circuit when the engine is cool, the car warms up much faster when circulating through the small circuit. The wear of its moving parts is reduced, overheating is eliminated, and the volume of harmful substances released into the environment is reduced.

A working thermostat allows you to warm up the engine to operating temperature, which for Kalina is 90-95 degrees. Over time, the valve wears out, and the heater maintains a temperature of no higher than 80 degrees. A working device helps the engine quickly warm up even in severe frost. Thanks to this device, the stove on Kalina is considered one of the warmest on VAZ cars. According to experts and car enthusiasts, the best price-quality ratio is the standard thermostat produced by DAAZ. It's all about a special screw, with which you can independently adjust the valve opening temperature. It is impossible not to take into account the reliability of factory products, which in this regard are superior to most analogues.

The same thermostats are used for 8- and 16-valve engines.

Lada Kalina Hatchback 11194 Sauvignon › Logbook › Choosing a thermostat for Kalina, replacing observation!

In the spring of 2014, the thermostat broke. Symptoms: the car does not warm up above 80 degrees, the radiator is hot already at 72 degrees, but should become hot at 85 (factory setting for opening the thermostat)

TIP 1 - check the temperature readings only using the digital parameter that indicates the temperature in the computer, it is more accurate! To do this, you need to connect a K-line scanner or an on-board computer with a function to display the internal combustion engine temperature

TIP 2 - carry out the check by warming up the car from a completely cooled state, this way you will be able to more accurately feel with your hand that the radiator is getting hot, and do not touch the pipes, neither lower nor upper, leave them alone! It is the RADIATOR that should become hot

NOTE - maintaining the temperature regime greatly affects fuel consumption; driving a car with a temperature of 78-80 degrees will increase fuel consumption, and warming up to this temperature for a very long time even more so! The operating temperature of the internal combustion engine in winter is from 87 degrees!

OBSERVATION - many here on Drive2 write about spontaneous airing of the cooling system on the viburnum, the appearance of an air lock and other problems that are mythical to me! What will I say about this: 1 the cooling system must be sealed, any advanced service has a device for checking the tightness of the SOD - this is not nano technology, this has been used for a long time! SOD after replacing the thermostat, while pouring coolant, unscrew the hose from the heated throttle valve on the thermostat side and add coolant until it flows out of the thermostat) that’s all. it’s not difficult! 3 servicing a lot of viburnums, and keeping the SOD in good condition, I never noticed any spontaneous problems like airing for no reason at all! Every problem has a technically explainable reason!

But I believe in low-quality spare parts! On March 13, 2014, I bought a thermostat gVladimir from Thompson Auto because there were reviews about it that it was the MOST RELIABLE and the defect rate was minimal. Compared with PRAMO LUZAR and one more factor: it is possible to insert a WEEN thermoelement into its body

In 2009, WEEN H&H (the Netherlands) and the Japanese corporation Toyota Tsusho Corporation began implementing a joint project to create and market a wide range of premium auto components under the WEEN brand. Products commissioned by Toyota Tsusho Corporation are manufactured in factories located in Europe (UK, the Netherlands and Poland) and Southeast Asia (China and Korea), certified ISO/TS 16949:2002 and audited by Toyota Tsusho Corporation.

Impressive description from the company website especially Toyota certification!

And now, on October 22, the thermostat of a Thompson car breaks down with the same symptoms as the factory PRAMO, having served only 7 months, although who knows, maybe it broke in the summer, but I didn’t notice! But how cold it became!

So I bought a ween b1064 thermoelement, let me remind you that this thermoelement fits without modifications only into the THOMSON AUTO thermostat housing and the expansion tank plug vag 443121 321

Everything works, foreign little things appeared in the basin, nice!

The quality of spare parts for VAZ is very very very poor, choose foreign analogues, or proven Russian companies with production in Russia, read reviews, do not listen to sellers at car markets!

Thermostat operating principle

The operation of a thermostat resembles the operation of a valve, only the opening and closing of the thermoelement occurs under the influence of temperature differences. The nominal operating temperature of a car engine is approximately 90°C, the temperature of full opening of the thermostat valve is 85°C. When the engine is cold started, the thermostat is in the closed position and opens completely when it reaches 85°C. On a cold engine, the coolant circulates in a small circle bypassing the cooling radiator; as soon as the temperature reaches operating temperature, the thermostat opens and the coolant begins to circulate in a large circle through the cooling radiator, thereby maintaining the operating temperature and preventing the engine from overheating.

How the device works

Photo 2 (Heater valve operation diagram)

Heater valve operation diagram

When the engine is cold, the thermostat valve is in the closed position, and antifreeze circulates in a small circle, passing only through the heater core and through the water jacket of the block. When the engine warms up to operating temperature, the valve opens completely and the liquid begins to circulate in a large circle, passing through the radiator, where it cools. This prevents overheating of the power unit.

In winter, warming up takes less time thanks to the thermostat - the heater radiator heats up earlier, and the cabin becomes warm within a few minutes, while saving fuel. The thermostat must be replaced if, when the temperature reaches 95 degrees or more, the valve does not open - the engine begins to overheat. If the motor, on the contrary, cannot warm up, it means that the device does not close and must also be replaced.

In design, this is a simple product consisting of a body, a main and bypass valve, a temperature-sensitive element, two inlet and one outlet pipe. Depending on the manufacturer, the thermostat is made of copper, brass or heat-resistant plastic. The heat-sensitive solid element is based on technical wax. When heated, it melts and, expanding, presses on the main valve, forcing it to open, thereby passing coolant in a large circle. The wax melts quickly thanks to the copper, aluminum and graphite powder that is included in its composition.

You can check the performance of the heater without installing it in the cooling system. To do this, place the device in a container of water and place it on the stove. As the liquid heats up, the thermostat valve opens approximately 3 centimeters. This way you can make sure that the device is working properly before installing it.

Management

We bring to your attention detailed instructions for completely replacing the thermostat with a new one. Even if you don’t understand how to replace the thermostat on a viburnum, the video will help clarify the situation.

1. Disconnect the sensor from the air filter housing and remove the air filter. As a rule, it will take no more than ten minutes to dismantle it. This is done correctly like this:

  • completely unscrew the 2 screws located on top, as well as the nut located on the side of the engine compartment. We recommend leaving these parts in one place so that later you don’t have to look for them separately on the market;
  • remove the connector installed on the recirculation valve (it, in turn, is based on the filter housing);
  • lift the valve up, and then, without disconnecting the tubes, move it all to the free side;
  • by unplugging the plug from the air sensor, remove the air hose by loosening the clamp;
  • Having slightly loosened and turned the air filter housing, it should come out.

2. Before carrying out direct disassembly . get rid of some of the coolant

3. Take a 8mm socket wrench and a screwdriver. Use it to loosen the clamps , and then remove the four hoses.

A well-pumped system will not allow liquid to spill in large quantities.

4. Take a 12mm wrench and remove the wire by unscrewing the top nut on the thermostat.

5. Now take the key for 13. There is a nut and a stud on the thermostat - you will find the first in the upper part of the housing, the second at the bottom. Try to remove the thermostat by gently loosening it.

Helpful advice: loosen the thermostat carefully, sometimes helping yourself with a screwdriver.

These actions must be performed because during operation, high temperatures literally “solder” the thermostat, causing the housing to stick. Help with a screwdriver will solve this problem.

6. Next, clean the seat from accumulated dirt (there will be a lot of it there). Don't leave the old gasket in place - get rid of it completely. Wipe the seating areas with a clean cloth. Using sealant, 1-1.5 mm of substance per seat, or use a paper gasket. The best option at the moment is sealant. If you have applied it, stop working for 5-10 minutes. During this time, the sealant needs to crystallize. In the case of a paper gasket, work can be carried out immediately.

7. Installation of a new thermostat is carried out in the exact opposite order of removal. It is important not to forget to replace the temperature sensor from the old thermostat. It is also important to connect the ground wire. This is done by screwing the ground wire onto the top stud.

8. After all hoses are reconnected, add coolant to the system . Its quantity can be selected based on how much liquid you drained during disassembly of the old faulty device. To accomplish this task, the method of removing air pockets is used.

In test mode, start the engine. While it is idling, make sure that all hose attachment points are not leaking . If such a problem occurs, tighten the loose clamps.

How to change the thermostat on Kalina

So, in order to make a replacement, you must adhere to the following conditional stages of work: 1. The first thing you need to do is disconnect the sensor that is connected to the air filter unit. After which, for the convenience of performing the work, it is necessary to completely dismantle the air filter housing, which is mounted on three support points (two so-called elastic bands and one mount in the battery area).

2. Before proceeding to the second stage - draining the coolant from the system, you need to decide how best to do this. There are many different methods, but only two of them are the most popular. The first and fastest is to drain the fluid from their system using a conventional electric compressor (to pump air into the tubes or tires of a car). With this method, there is no need for a pit or a lift, and the work can be done on the street, parking lot or any other place convenient for you. The obvious advantage of this method is that car owners do not have to remove the pipes from the cooling system and unscrew the plugs from the cylinder block. To perform the work, you will need an empty container with a volume of at least 4-6 liters and a compressor with a special device.

Open the cap of the expansion tank, loosen the clamp and remove the small hose from the tank, and seal the protruding fitting with adhesive tape. Place the hose securely in the container prepared in advance. Then place the compressor hose in the expansion tank, and briefly pump up the air pressure in it. The coolant will begin to flow into the container you prepared. Carry out the procedure until the system is completely drained. Please note that after draining, the thermostat may contain some liquid, be prepared for this.

The second way, as many have already guessed, is to open the cap on the tank or radiator. Unscrew the drain bolt on the cylinder block (located on the bottom of the car) and simply drain all the antifreeze. 3. Now, using a screwdriver, you can loosen the clamps and disconnect all the hoses that are connected to the thermostat. 4. In order to remove the thermostat itself, take a hexagon (5) and unscrew the three mounting screws. If the assembly does not detach, carefully loosen it or pry it with a screwdriver at the connection points. Disconnect the faulty thermostat.

5. Clean the connecting unit from traces of scale and other contaminants. At the same time, taking advantage of the moment, we recommend changing the seal itself. 6. Next, all that remains is to install the new thermostat (not forgetting about the seal) and secure it with bolts. 7. Connect and properly tighten all hoses. Close the plugs on the radiator and on the bottom (if they were not previously tightened). 8. Pour the required amount of antifreeze into the expansion tank of your car. 9. Replace the air filter housing and connect the previously disconnected sensors.

Thermostat malfunctions

The design of the thermostat consists of a housing with pipes and a sensitive element with a valve, which actually shuts off the pipeline. The housing itself fails extremely rarely, and only due to mechanical damage.

Most often the sensitive element breaks. It is a sealed cylinder filled with a wax-based solid. The cylinder contains a piston with a rod. When heated, the substance melts and expands, pushing the piston. The latter extends and closes the valve.

The most common reasons for thermostat failure are:

  • deposits of products of corrosion processes on the moving parts of the sensitive element;
  • dirt, scale or foreign objects entering the thermostat housing;
  • poor quality coolant;
  • malfunction of the water pump (pump).

One symptom of a faulty thermostat is an overheating engine. It indicates that the coolant (coolant) moves in a small circle without passing through the radiator. It can also happen the other way around, when the liquid moves constantly in a large circle. In this case, the engine will take a very long time to warm up.

How to understand that it’s time to change it

Replacing the thermostat on Kalina 8 valves is necessary in the following situations:

  • the engine is constantly exposed to excessively high thermal loads, the temperature increases. This may lead to new unforeseen troubles;
  • engine overheating is constant, but not reaching a critical level;
  • if the coolant temperature began to rise for unknown reasons, etc.

It is important to closely monitor changes and monitor dynamics. If a spike occurs, it is recommended to immediately seek professional help. Traveling with a broken vehicle can end in disaster. If your car constantly overheats, but this does not cause a breakdown, you should think about timely replacement of parts.

You can do the process yourself or visit a service station. In order to do the work yourself, it is recommended to follow simple instructions.

Symptoms and consequences

Like any other mechanism, the thermostat can break down instantly. If this happens, the main thing is to detect the breakdown in time. Most often, a faulty mechanism can be detected when:

  • increasing the amount of time required to fully warm up the power unit;
  • the presence of elevated temperature in the power unit or even overheating.

The worst consequence of driving a car with a faulty thermostat is an overheated engine. There is no need to remind you once again about the consequences that overheating can cause. Therefore, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the issue of replacing a problematic thermostat on a Lada Kalina car.

What is needed for replacement

Just understanding how to replace a thermostat on a Kalina car is not enough. You need to have a set of tools with you, without which the work process will not work:

  1. Prepare screwdrivers of various configurations and sizes.
  2. Without socket wrenches it will also be difficult; you need numbers twelve and thirteen.
  3. Using silicone sealant you will have to “patch” unwanted gaps.
  4. You need a container suitable for draining liquid from the old coolant regulator. Usually a 5-liter bottle or jar is enough, it is recommended to make sure that the temperature is suitable.
  5. A piece of cloth for wiping away dirt.
  6. New thermostat Lada Kalina.

Armed with tools and knowledge, you can try to start replacing. The process is quite lengthy - take a free day.

Verification methods

There are two ways to determine the functionality of the thermostat. The first method involves checking without dismantling. To do this, you need to start a cold engine, warm it up to operating temperature (about 90 degrees), and touch the lower radiator hose.

A cold lower pipe at this temperature indicates that for some reason the thermostat did not open. If it is hot, the thermostat operates normally.

For a more accurate check, you will need to remove the thermostat cover with the sensitive element. Place it in a metal container with clean cold water and place it on the stove to warm up. When the water temperature reaches 85-90 degrees, the element should operate, pushing the valve stem forward. If this does not happen, the thermostat is faulty.

Adjustment

Ideal operation is when the valve cover opens at a temperature of 95 degrees, but it happens that it opens at 70, 80, 85 degrees. In this case, the car moves on an internal combustion engine that is not fully warmed up. Of course, you can purchase a new device, but you can adjust it yourself. To do this, you need to grind off the stem, but this must be done with extreme caution. You need to grind down the rod a few millimeters at a time and try to start the engine. After this, check at what temperature the valve will open. Once the temperature reaches 95 degrees and the valve opens, the adjustment will be successful.

What is a thermostat?

A thermostat is a component of a vehicle's cooling system that maintains the recommended coolant temperature.

The main component is the valve.

Depending on the position of this valve, the liquid will flow in a large or small circle. With the help of a thermostat, the engine will not overheat as a result of constant operation over a long period of time.

In the case of winter cold, the device significantly saves the fuel needed to operate the engine. Plus, the time spent warming up the vehicle engine to the optimal temperature will be reduced. On a car such as the Lada Kalina, replacing the thermostat is necessary if, in the temperature range of +85...+100 degrees Celsius, its valve does not open.

The principle of operation is to comply with the normal laws of physics. The solid heat-sensitive element melts during the heating process, due to which the damper opens independently. The degree of openness depends, first of all, on how much the heat-sensitive element has melted. As the device operates, it determines the further path of coolant flow.

Let us remember that it can flow either in a small or in a large circle.

Replacement Tools

First of all, you will need a working thermostat for your Lada Kalina car. During the work, you will have to drain the coolant. In order not to look for a suitable container already in the process, we recommend taking a simple five-liter container with you. In this case, even an ordinary five-liter bottle into which artesian mineral water is poured is suitable.

Just like in the case of other cars in which the thermostat is replaced, the 8-valve Viburnum will require two socket wrenches that secure the device. In this model, the nuts have two sizes - 12 and 13. Cleaning the seat is impossible without the use of sealant. To properly install the new thermostat, take with you a special silicone-based sealant; it will work fine. Plus, you will have to take a Phillips screwdriver. Finally, the main thing you can’t do without is one and a half to two hours of free time.

Signs of a bad thermostat

There are several characteristic signs of a thermostat malfunction on a Lada Kalina car:

  • The car engine does not warm up to operating temperature;
  • The engine quickly heats up and boils;

Let's look at each of the reasons in more detail.

Cold engine

If the thermostat is stuck in the open position, the engine will not be able to heat up to operating temperature due to the constant circulation of coolant in a large circle through the cooling radiator. The reasons for a stuck thermostat can be long-term use of coolant without replacing it and flushing the system. The thermostat body is made of aluminum, and the thermoelement is made of metal; with long-term use of coolant, traces of corrosion appear on the thermoelement, which leads to improper operation of the thermostat and its failure.

Hot engine

When the engine overheats, the reasons are the same as when it is not heated, only the thermostat gets stuck in the closed position. Also, jamming of the thermostat in the closed position can be confused with the breakage of the petals on the pump, which leads to the impossibility of coolant circulation along the circuit.

Video about replacing the thermostat and bleeding the cooling system

When is it necessary to replace the cooling system pipes? Everything is very simple - when they crack, burst, tear and begin to leak coolant. Something similar happened to me - hernias appeared on some of the pipes in the area of the clamps. There were no fluid leaks, but their appearance indicated that this could happen at any moment. Therefore, it was decided to replace all the pipes, as well as the thermostat and, at the same time, fill in new antifreeze.

To gain access to the pipes on Kalina, you need to remove the air filter and the corrugation going from it to the throttle assembly.

Also, drain the coolant first. It is better to do this on a cold engine to avoid getting burned. You need to drain the cylinder block and radiator. The drain hole on the block is located directly behind the ignition module (so it also needs to be removed), and on the radiator - at the bottom left.

How did I drain the antifreeze? I cut off half of a plastic bottle (it turned out to be something like a watering can) and put a hose on the neck itself. I placed the bottle under the drain hole, and led the other end of the hose under the engine into a bucket. It turned out very convenient. The pressure of the drained liquid can be controlled by the cap on the expansion tank (by opening and closing it slightly).

After the coolant has been completely drained, you can begin to remove the pipes and thermostat. There is nothing complicated here - unscrew the clamps and remove the pipes and hoses. The only thing that caused me difficulty was removing the outlet and inlet pipes of the stove. The clamps are very inconvenient, I had to tinker a little.

Having removed the pipes, I realized that I had not bought a new thermostat in vain. There was a rather large hole in the fitting going to the stove. As I understand it, it appeared as a result of the interaction of antifreeze and its additives with metal. The remaining thermostat outputs were in slightly better condition, but there were traces of interaction with the coolant.

How can you modify the heater?

The new models Lada Kalina 2 and Lada Granta use a cooling system operating scheme with parallel connection of the heater radiator. Because of this, the operating temperature is reduced to 85 degrees, which is slightly lower than on previous models of the VAZ family. Many car owners seriously believe that this temperature cannot be normal - there is increased fuel consumption, as well as a decrease in the service life of moving engine parts due to premature wear. But according to experts, there is no connection between the reduced operating temperature and engine life.

The cooling system of the Lada Kalina works more efficiently thanks to a single-circuit design. Such a modernization only benefited the engine; it made it possible to change the ignition timing, resulting in fuel savings. The inertia of the thermostat is also reduced. The downside was the mediocre heating of the cabin at sub-zero temperatures. The way out of the situation is to independently modify the thermostat. Modification involves two main methods:

  • shorten the rod of the solid-state temperature-sensitive element;
  • replace the thermocouple.

For cars with a cable gas pedal, a heated throttle assembly from the cooling system is used. In this case, an additional circulation circle is added.

Adjusting the thermocouple rod

Shortening the end of the thermosensitive element rod will allow you to adjust the operating temperature to 90-95 degrees. Trimming is carried out sequentially in increments of no more than one millimeter. The metal is soft, so the procedure must be carried out carefully. It is advisable to reinstall the thermostat after each millimeter cut and check how much the operating temperature rises while driving.

If the result does not meet expectations, you can adjust the rod further until the arrow on the instrument panel shows 95 degrees and the air in the cabin begins to warm up faster. The method is simple but effective. Among the disadvantages, there is a slight increase in wear of SOD parts due to operation at high temperatures. If you overdo it with shortening, you can ruin the device.

Replacing the temperature sensor

The thermocouple can be replaced entirely. The Wahler brand thermostat insert is suitable for Lada Kalina: 3017.87 D (at 87° C) or 3091.92 B (at 90° C). The thermoelement is replaced as an assembly with a spring, and the device will have to be cut with a hacksaw to remove the insert. A more convenient option is to buy a thermostat from BEHR - you don’t have to cut or adjust anything

You can also use analogues from Daewoo Nexia or Renault Logan cars. Logan's thermal insert requires adjustment.

If a LUZAR thermostat is installed on Grant, then replacing the temperature-sensitive element is not possible.

Judging by the reviews of car owners who have made such modifications, fuel consumption while warming up the engine has decreased slightly.

Throttle body heating

Another way to upgrade the heater is to create an additional throttle valve heating circuit. Some drivers are trying to prevent the unit from freezing in winter in this way. The method is clearly not for beginners. It consists of drilling a hole in the cover of the device and welding an additional fitting to it, through which heated antifreeze will be discharged. The thermostat mounting studs will also have to be lengthened. The process is labor-intensive and ultimately impractical. Freezing of the throttle assembly is the exception rather than the rule, so there is no point in carrying out such an upgrade.

How to make a replacement

The first stage is to drain the coolant that is still inside the old device. It is worth making sure that by that time its temperature is optimal for the procedure. Then:

  1. Remove the air filter. To do this, you need to find all the fasteners located in the motor area and remove them. It is important to put them correctly in one set, which will help their safety.
  2. We find the intake valve located next to the filter, open it, and move it to the side, freeing up the working space.
  3. Let's move on to the air sensor: disconnect it and remove the air hose (to do this you will need to make the fastening looser and loosen it).
  4. The housing can be dismantled; to make work easier, move it in different directions.
  5. The second stage is to disconnect the 4 hoses, releasing the fastenings. If there are no serious violations in the system, a small amount of liquid will spill out. A container for draining consumables will come in handy.
  6. We look for a nut on the top of the thermostat - this is a fastener for the ground wire.
  7. Having unscrewed the stud and nut, we can remove the sensor itself. It may not be easy - use the right tool.
  8. The last stage is preparation and installation. We clean the place where the new equipment will be from dirt. This is a fundamentally important point: debris can mechanically or chemically affect the operation of the device.
  9. At one of the last stages, sealant will come in handy. Apply it in a one-centimeter layer and wait up to 10 minutes. A paper gasket is suitable as a budget alternative.
  10. We install it the same way, only in reverse order.

If you have questions about how to change the thermostat on a Lada Kalina, it is recommended that you read the step-by-step instructions, carefully studying each point.

How to recognize a faulty thermostat?

  • Long engine warm-up.
  • Unreasonable increase in coolant temperature, or engine overheating.

The latter is the worst thing that can happen to you and your car's engine. For you, this means significant waste, big problems and wasted time. For the engine - reduced power, operational problems and inevitable overhauls.

Now let's talk about how to replace the thermostat if it fails. The popular VAZ model Lada Kalina will act as a test subject.

Replacing the Lada Kalina thermostat - necessary tools:

  1. Screwdriver Set;
  2. Two socket wrenches for “12″, “13″;
  3. Silicone sealant;
  4. Container for draining old coolant approximately (5 l);
  5. 1-2 hours of free time;
  6. Thermostat Lada Kalina.

Important points when replacing a thermostat

When replacing the thermostat, eliminate the risk of antifreeze getting onto the sensor connectors and into the air path of the Lada Kalina. To prevent such situations, we recommend wrapping electrical connectors and components in plastic bags. Due to the low cost of the thermostat, a more rational action would be to replace the entire thermostat. It is better to purchase original products, since analogues may not match their fastening characteristics (hole diameters, etc.). This will avoid difficult moments during installation.

Self-replacement of the thermostat VAZ 1118 (Lada Kalina) - detailed instructions

1. First, drain the coolant.

2. After this, you need to remove the air filter, to do this do the following:

  • A . From the engine compartment side, unscrew the two upper bolts and the nut. Put all the parts in one place, this will allow you not to lose them during the process of replacing the thermostat.
  • b . Now remove the connector located on the filter housing from the recirculation valve.
  • V . Remove the valve by pulling it up. Move it along with the tubes a little to the side so that it does not interfere with your work.
  • G . You need to remove the connector from the air sensor, then loosen the clamp and remove the air hose.

  • d . By slightly loosening and turning, remove the air filter housing outward.

3. The next step is to remove the four hoses; to do this, loosen the clamps a little, use an “8” socket and a screwdriver. If the system is well pumped, then a lot of coolant should not leak out.

4. Using a “12” wrench, you need to unscrew the top nut of the thermostat in order to remove the ground wire.

5. Unscrew the stud and nut on the thermostat using a “13” wrench. Using slight loosening, remove the thermostat. Sometimes you have to use a screwdriver or other device for this, this is explained by the fact that over the years of operation the thermostat tends to “stick” to its seat.

6. Before installing the Lada Kalina thermostat, prepare the seat by clearing it of dust and dirt, as well as remnants of the old gasket.

7. Apply a thin layer of sealant 1–1.5 mm thick; if you don’t have sealant, you can use a special paper gasket.

8. Replacing the Lada Kalina thermostat is possible only when the surface is properly prepared and the applied sealant has time to crystallize. Allow the sealant to sit for 5 – 10 minutes and begin installing the thermostat.

Replacing the thermostat

On the automotive spare parts market you can find a large number of thermostats from various manufacturers; their cost varies from 400 to 700 rubles. When choosing, it is better to stick to original AvtoVAZ spare parts. The catalog number for the standard thermostat on Kalina is 1118-1306010. Of the analogues, “Luzar” and “Pramo” have proven themselves well, but the first is often counterfeited, and the second has poor quality - the service life is on average about a year. The original device, which is installed from the factory, can last more than three years. Replacing a thermostat on Kalina with 8 valves or 16 is estimated at no more than 800 rubles, including removing air from the system. To avoid paying twice, you can change the part yourself. Just before this, you should check the device for functionality using the described methods.

What tools will you need?

To operate, you will need a working thermostat and a suitable container for draining the coolant from the SOD - a regular five-liter plastic bottle. The differences between replacements on an 8- and 16-valve engine are insignificant. On the latter, you will need to additionally remove the starter so as not to accidentally fill it with antifreeze. The rest of the procedure is similar.

To remove the assembly, you will need two socket wrenches, 13 mm and 12 mm, since Kalina uses nuts of different sizes.

To seal the seat, you will need a silicone sealant gasket. To remove the clamps, use a shaped screwdriver. The procedure lasts on average an hour and a half.

Replacement instructions

The replacement process is not complicated and can be done independently if you follow the instructions. First you need to disconnect the wire plug from the sensor on the air filter and remove it. It will take a few minutes to properly dismantle the filter:

  • the two upper screws are completely unscrewed together with the nut from the power unit side;
  • there is a recirculation valve on the filter housing; it must also be removed;
  • lift the valve up and, without disconnecting the hoses, move it to the side;
  • unplug the terminal from the air sensor and, loosening the clamps, disconnect the air pipe;
  • After shaking the filter from side to side, turn its housing and try to pull it out.

Further procedure:

  1. Drain the coolant from the system.
  2. Using an 8 mm wrench or a shaped screwdriver, loosen all the clamps of all connecting hoses, then disconnect them.
  3. Unscrew the 12 mm nut on the thermostat and remove the wire.
  4. Using a 13 mm wrench, unscrew the fastening nut at the top and bottom of the thermostat on the studs, then try to remove the device by slightly loosening it. You don't need to make a lot of effort for this. Keep in mind that the thermostat operates at high temperatures, due to which the housing literally “sticks” to the seat.
  5. Clean the seat from dirt and remove the old sealing gasket. Then wipe the treated area with a clean rag, apply a thin layer of silicone cover and leave for 5-10 minutes.
  6. The new thermostat is installed in the reverse order. You should definitely replace the temperature sensor by removing it from the old device, and do not forget to connect the ground wire. To do this, it is fixed with a nut on the upper stud.
  7. Connect all hoses and fill the system with coolant to the maximum level.

Which thermostat is better?

The choice of thermostat is a purely personal matter for everyone, which depends on the thickness of the owner’s wallet. The most popular thermostats are thermostats of the “LUZAR” brand; this company has proven itself well in the market for its price-quality ratio.

In addition, the Luzar company has a thermostat with an opening temperature of 92°C, which has a rather positive effect on warming up the interior in the cold season. Many Kalina owners install this thermostat in the winter.

Bottom line

Now we check whether we did everything correctly and how the new thermostat works. We start the engine and let it warm up to operating temperature. We touch the lower pipe, determining its temperature. If it is hot, then the thermostat is working as it should.

Do not forget to check the tightness of the connections between the pipes and the thermostat housing.

Checking for correct installation

It is very easy to check the correct installation and operation of the thermostat in the Lada Kalina. Here you will need to warm up the engine and then immediately turn it off. Next, open the hood and feel for the lower pipe that goes from the radiator to the cooling jacket of the engine block. If it is heated, the thermostat opens, and there is no risk of the Lada Kalina engine overheating. When this phenomenon does not occur, the system components require careful diagnosis. Therefore, it would be a good idea to check the functionality of the new thermostat before installation.
