I decided to share my experience about a complete oil change in the automatic transmission of Kalina and Grants. Previously, with a mileage of 37,000 km, I carried out a partial oil change with removing the pan, cleaning and washing the filter and magnets. Lil then Nissan Matic S
, purchased from off. dealer for crazy money. Why the officials? Because I had a sad experience of purchasing golim oil in Emex... But I didn’t dare mix it with my own oil, although I tried it later in a glass - I mixed the factory oil with liquid moth, heated it on the stove - nothing bad happened to it!
Now the mileage is 64,000 km. and 4 years of operation. This time the choice fell on Liquid Moly, because the Nissan Matic S is painfully fatty...)) So we need: 1

There is one caveat: LIQUI MOLY Top Tec ATF 1800 R oil, article number - 20625, differs from the above only in price and COLOR
, it is red, like Matic S. Although the composition is, of course, identical.
Be careful. (In fact, you need to take more oil, I didn’t have enough to completely flush the automatic transmission, the fluid on the 7-liter drain was brown-yellow, so for a better replacement you need 8-9 liters, so it’s easier to buy two 5-liter canisters)) )

This time it came off just as well, but I decided not to risk it and replaced it with a new one, but more on that later... The cost of the gasket is 1,600 rubles.
4.
White - spirit or benzine for washing and cleaning the pan and filter magnets.
5.

A pair of hoses, 1 meter each (maybe less, I didn’t measure my own). The hoses are of different diameters, the fitting of the box is thin, 5 - 7 mm, the hose is an old gas one, but the second one seems to be 12 mm. along the inner diameter so that it can easily fit onto the standard hose of the automatic transmission cooling system. I recommend measuring the outer diameter of the hoses leading from the automatic transmission to the radiator before starting work.

Helper!
In our case, we can’t go anywhere without it!
I won’t go into detail about removing the pan and filter, because... The drive is full of recordings. I will only focus on the key points: 1.
Approach the replacement procedure itself responsibly.
The room must be clean, as well as the unit (in the area of the pan and the automatic transmission dipstick) too. What did I do? I washed the garage floor and automatic transmission with a high pressure washer. Any debris that gets into the unit can cause trouble. Don't be lazy! 2.
The automatic transmission filter is mounted on bolts of different lengths.
Don't get confused. Make a filter-shaped template from cardboard with holes for bolts. 3.
It is advisable to use a lint-free cloth. The pile will also make a mess of the box.
Complete automatic transmission oil change on Lada Granta
It is possible to completely change the oil in the automatic transmission of Lada Granta. Plug 2 is screwed into the crankcase from below (key “19”). Underneath it there is tube 3, which is unscrewed with a “6” hexagon.
Two plugs at one point
The algorithm will be simple:
Of course, the car itself is placed on an overpass (pit).
- An automatic transmission is more sensitive to dust than any manual transmission. This must be remembered even when changing the oil in the automatic transmission of Lada Grants. All funnels and tubes must be perfectly clean.
- There is no need to increase the temperature of the box too much. The optimum is 45 degrees, but in general, if we are talking about an “automatic”, you can replace it with a “cold” one. But for greater efficiency, the box is “heated”, and then the “new” oil must also be heated.
- When measuring the volume of liquid being drained, take into account the temperature - heated liquid expands.
Material selection
Let us remind you that a partial replacement requires up to three liters of oil, but in general the crankcase holds 5.1 liters. The “old” material is mixed with the “new”, and there are only two options to choose from:
- Nissan ATF Matic-S;
- Genuine EJ-1 ATF.
Jatco itself uses the second option.

Our client remains aware that changing the oil in the automatic transmission of the Lada Granta is done only at the service. And in general, such a change is not necessary according to the regulations, because the service interval is 100 thousand km. However, changing the oil in an automatic transmission will not be more difficult than in a car with a manual transmission. The problem is that it will not be possible to keep the level under control, although a probe for control is provided in the design of the “automatic machine”.
Of course, estimate the volume of drained oil from the video clip.
We are talking about an automatic transmission installed on a Lada car. The automatic transmission design has a dipstick that allows you to keep the oil level under control. However, the control is carried out when the engine is running, and it will be impossible to get to the dipstick without removing the filter.
This popular rumor is a dipstick - it’s even more convenient than on a manual transmission
Consider that instead of a dipstick, only a plug is installed. In fact, this happens to many people - if you remove the filter, we see a “plug” and not a dipstick.
Let's look at how to check the oil level in the automatic transmission of Lada Grants, following the regulations:
- You need to start the engine, press the brake, go through all the gears, engage gear “P”;
Lada Granta automatic transmission: changing the oil in an automatic transmission
Let's start with the fact that the automatic transmission on the Grant conventionally belongs to the category of so-called “maintenance-free” gearboxes. In other words, as the manufacturer himself claims, the oil in the automatic transmission of the Lada Granta is filled for the entire service life of the car. It turns out that you only need to change the oil in the Lada Granta automatic transmission if the gearbox is being repaired. Otherwise, there is no need to change the oil during operation.
It should also be added that transmission fluid, although slower than motor oils, still inevitably loses its beneficial properties. Taking into account the fact that the Grant has a “classic” hydromechanical automatic transmission, the ATF oil in such a box gets very hot in the torque converter when transmitting torque.
You can also note temperature changes, wear products of the box itself, contaminating the liquid, etc. It turns out that if the owner is interested in increasing the service life of the machine, the oil in the automatic transmission of Grants and any other car needs to be changed.
How to change the oil in an automatic transmission Lada Granta
First of all, you should select the appropriate automatic transmission oil for replacement. The Lada Granta automatic transmission can be filled with either original oil (recommended by the manufacturer) or suitable analogues.
So, to replace you will need:
- Transmission oil in Granta automatic transmission;
- Container for draining waste;
- Hose and funnel;
- Clean rags;
- Keys: 19 and hexagon 5;
Next you will need to perform the following work and operations:
- First, the automatic transmission needs to be warmed up by driving the car for about 10-15 km. Then the car needs to be lifted on a lift, driven into a pit or onto an overpass.
- If the car has additional engine protection, this protection will need to be removed. Next, you need to warm up the internal combustion engine again to operating temperatures (turn on the cooling system fan 1-2 times).
- After the internal combustion engine, you can turn off the engine and let the units cool a little. After cooling has occurred, we go down under the car. The automatic transmission housing has a drain plug and a filler plug.
- Taking the key number 19, unscrew the drain plug. Next, use a 5 key to unscrew the overflow plug, after which the waste is drained into a container placed in advance.
- After the used oil stops flowing, the areas around the plugs and the plugs themselves should be carefully wiped with a clean rag to remove dirt.
- Both unscrewed plugs (drain and overflow) must be tightened with the recommended force (indicated in the manual). Now, to gain access, you will need to remove the air filter housing. This will allow you to get to the automatic transmission oil dipstick.
- The specified dipstick must be removed, after which a hose with a funnel is inserted into the neck.
What to look for when changing the oil in a Granta automatic transmission
What kind of oil to fill in the Hyundai Accent gearbox. when to change the oil in the transmission on the accent. step-by-step procedure for changing oil in a manual transmission
As you can see, the procedure described above is not complicated. However, you need to understand that this is only a partial replacement, which does not allow you to immediately update the entire liquid. For this reason, it is recommended to carry out partial oil changes in automatic transmissions quite often (every 20 thousand km).
Another possible method of updating is in three stages, when the partial replacement procedure is performed after 2-3 thousand km. after each stage. This method allows you to “refresh” the oil as much as possible with your own hands without seriously disassembling the box.
For this reason, as part of the replacement, before checking, it is necessary to at least warm up the engine until the cooling system fan turns on. The car also needs to be placed on a level surface. Then, with the engine running, the automatic transmission selector should be moved from position P to position D, R, N, etc. In each position the box should work for 10-15 seconds.
After the driver has “walked” through all the positions, the power unit must be turned off, the air filter housing must be moved aside, after which the automatic transmission dipstick must be removed. In this case, you first need to wipe the oil dipstick with a clean rag and insert it back until it stops for 2-3 seconds. Then the dipstick is removed again and the oil level is then assessed using the dipstick.
Normally, the oil level should be between o and “max”. It is not allowed to either reduce or exceed the level above or below the specified marks
Please note that overfilling the automatic transmission with oil can lead to negative consequences in the same way as underfilling

Step-by-step instructions for changing the oil
Replacing transmission fluid, regardless of its type, begins with preparatory work. To do this, the Lada Kalina 2 car is placed on a flat horizontal surface. You can use a lift, a viewing hole, or drive onto an overpass. The car must be warmed up before starting. Most of the procedure is carried out from below the car.
Changing the oil in a manual transmission
Automatic transmission oil change
- First you need to remove the protective cover or boot.
- Then unscrew the drain plug with a 19 key. It is located on the pallet.
- We substitute a reservoir for waste liquid.
- There is an overflow plug under the drain plug - remove it and drain the oil.
- For a better replacement, you can remove the pan and clean it from the inside. To do this, unscrew the bolts with a 10mm wrench and carefully remove the part. We clean the tray and the magnets located on it.
- We install the pallet in place.
- The new lubricant must be poured through the dipstick hole. The dipstick plug is located near the engine block, under the bellows of the air filter. If access to the filler hole and dipstick is difficult, you can remove the corrugation along with the air filter cover. To remove the corrugation, you need to unscrew the 4 bolts securing the filter cover, remove the air flow sensor and the air pipe. The pipe and corrugation are secured with clamps.
- We take out the dipstick plug and, using a hose with a funnel, pour in the same amount of new oil as was drained.
- To distribute the lubricant in the gearbox, you need to start the engine and shift the gearbox selector through all gears. The selector must be held in each position for several seconds.
- Check the level of the filled working fluid. We lower the dipstick plug with the wiped tip into the filler hole and remove it. The oil level should be between o and “MAX”.
- Having brought the lubricant level to the optimal level, close the dipstick plug and install the air filter bellows (if it has been removed).
Replacing the working fluid in the automatic transmission of Lada Kalina 2 has been completed.
Stages of performing a complete oil change
So let's get started:
- To begin with, if your engine has protection, then it needs to be removed.
- Drive the car itself onto a lift or pit.
- We warm up the engine to operating temperature so that the cooling fan starts working. After this, you need to turn off the engine.
- Take the key number 19. Use it to unscrew the drain plug and put it aside for a while.
- You need a 5mm hexagon. Unscrew the filler plug and drain the oil into the container of your choice.
- After you have drained the fluid, take the filler and drain plugs, wipe them with tissues and reinstall them.
- To make it easier for you to continue working, remove the air filter housing. This will allow you to get to the automatic transmission dipstick.
- Next, pull out the dipstick and insert the prepared hose with a funnel into this hole.
- Fill the automatic transmission with new oil. There must be a balance, because as much as you drain, fill in as much.
- Turn on the engine. Shift each gear slowly.
- Stop the engine, take the dipstick and check the oil level. It should be at a level between the minimum and maximum. Be careful, the test is carried out only on a heated box.
Theory - watch the video!
Checking the transmission oil level should be done with the gearbox cooled down and the vehicle positioned strictly horizontally. To find out how much oil is in Kalina's box, pull out the dipstick (oil level indicator), which is located in the upper rear part of the gearbox housing (for clarity, the air filter and air duct have been removed). Then we wipe the dipstick with a rag, insert it back into the crankcase hole until it stops and then take it out again. The oil level in the Kalina gearbox should be between the “MIN” and “MAX” marks on the indicator.
Lada Granta: transmission oil for manual, automatic and manual transmissions
Under the influence of temperature, mechanical and time factors, special additives contained in working fluids gradually lose their properties and cease to meet the technical requirements provided by the manufacturer.
Working fluid poured into the Lada Granta gearbox:
Changing the oil in the gearbox of a Lada Granta with a cable drive with your own hands
- oils used for mechanical and robotic gearboxes - semi-synthetic oil LUKOIL TM 4 75W-90 GL-4 (depending on the climatic conditions in which the car will be operated, the viscosity class may change: 75W-80, 75W-85, 75W-90, 80W-85, 80W-90);
- oils used for automatic transmissions - Genuine EJ-1 ATF.
If we consider the Lada Granta and manual transmission oil, the manufacturer does not provide for mandatory replacement of the working fluids of the Lada Granta manual transmission, since transmission fluids are designed for the entire service life of the vehicle. But in reality this is not entirely true. In order for a manual transmission to serve for a long time, the fluid in the gearbox must be replaced every 60,000 km.
List of some oils used in the Lada Granta manual transmission and recommended by the manufacturer:
- Kinetic mineral oil from Russian with viscosity classes: 80W-85 GL-4 or 75W-90 GL-4/5;
- Translux TM 4-12 oil from Russia with viscosity class 75W-85 GL-4, developed on a synthetic and semi-synthetic basis with a multifunctional additive package;
- all-season mineral oil TRANS KP from Russia with viscosity class 80W-85 GL-4;
- all-season semi-synthetic oil TRANS KP SUPER from Russia with viscosity class 75W-90 GL-4;
- synthetic oil Shell Spirax S5 ATE from European with viscosity class 75W-90 GL-4/5.
Please note that the working fluid level poured into the Lada Granta manual transmission is 3.2 liters. At the same time, less space can be placed during replacement, since some of the oil cannot be drained from hard-to-reach areas.
If you need transmission oil Grenade automatic transmission, recommendations for the selection and timing of replacement are somewhat different from the “mechanics”. The Lada Granta with automatic transmission is a new product on the Russian market, since automatic transmissions were not so popular in VAZs, or rather, they were not installed en masse at all.
According to the recommendations of the manufacturer, there are no regulations for replacing transmission fluid in the automatic transmission of a Lada Granta car, since the fluid is filled for the entire service life of the car. In fact, transmission fluid, subjected to constant temperature and mechanical stress, ages and loses its properties.
The VAZ manufacturer recommends Genuine GM EJ-1 ATF transmission fluid or an analogue of NISSAN ATF Matic-S for use in the Jatco automatic transmission on the Lada Granta. The chemical composition of the liquids is compatible and they can be mixed. There are also other less expensive analogues of gear oils, such as Aisin ATF AFW from a Japanese manufacturer.
The working fluid level poured into the Lada Granta automatic transmission, which is recommended by the manufacturer, is 5.1 liters. However, in reality it is possible to fill less, since it is impossible to completely drain all the waste from the unit without disassembling it.
Transmission oil Grenade manual transmission is practically an analogue of lubricant for manual transmission. In other words, with a robotic gearbox installed on the Lada Granta, everything is much simpler than with an automatic transmission. The fact is that the operating principle of a robotic gearbox is very similar to the operating principle of a manual gearbox, in which the oil is not subjected to excessive overheating and pressure.
For this reason, the manufacturer decided to use in robotic transmissions the fluids used in the Lada Granta manual transmissions discussed above. This was done in order to optimize the company’s costs for the production and maintenance of manufactured cars.
Everyday life of a grant driver - changing the transmission oil at the grants gearbox
Which gear oil composition to choose?
On the Russian market, transmission oils are divided into three types according to their chemical composition:
- synthetic;
- semi-synthetic;
- mineral.
From the factory, as we have already said, Magnum 300 from TNK is poured. In terms of its composition, it belongs to mineral liquids. But less than 5% of Lada Kalina owners use this type.
The most preferred type of lubricant is semi-synthetic. This type is chosen by 50% of drivers, and we recommend it. And 45% of car owners buy fully synthetic fluids. What kind of oil you put into your manual transmission depends entirely on you.
Design features of the Jatco automatic transmission
Lada Granta cars are equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission Jatco JF414E (AY-K3). The characteristics of the new car are as close as possible to international standards. The Lada Granta gearbox is equipped with a reliable hydraulic unit.
The technical capabilities and operational properties of this automatic transmission are excellent for modern domestically produced cars. The gearbox is protected from overheating; reliable protection is triggered when it reaches +114°C. Sensor readings below this parameter are considered normal for further movement. The Grant gearbox is controlled using an electronic control unit (ECU).
The main purpose of lubricants for automatic transmissions
The condition of road surfaces on Russian highways is not of high quality, so when driving a Grant on our roads, you will have to change the oil in the gearbox much more often than recommended.
Transmission oil performs the following functions:
- Reduces the friction force between the mating surfaces of working parts and assemblies.
- Removes heat.
- Cleans parts from wear products in the form of harmful deposits.
During the operation of the automatic transmission, the lubricating fluid gradually evaporates, is spent on the formation of a protective layer, and collects metal dust, shavings and other wear elements. External factors have a significant influence on the intensity and degree of oil aging:
- driving habits;
- temperature changes;
- quality of the road surface.
Aggressive driving (sharp braking, rapid acceleration from a stop, frequent downtime in city traffic jams, etc.) leads to accelerated wear of the automatic transmission oil.
Thermal changes negatively affect the viscosity of the oil. The additives included in gear oil quickly lose their beneficial properties with sudden changes in temperature.
The service life of the chassis, power unit, and gearbox depends on the quality of the roads. Drivers of Lada Granta cars are forced to frequently change the oil in the automatic transmission.
Do I need to change the gearbox oil and how often to do it?
Many people believe that the oil in a car’s gearbox does not require replacement at all. In fact, this is only true for some foreign-made cars. The oil change in the Kalina gearbox, according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, should be done at least every 75 thousand kilometers. In practice, this procedure is performed a little more often. One of the reasons why the replacement can be made a little earlier, at least for the first time, is the fact that mineral oil is poured into the gearbox at the factory. Its feature is an increase in viscosity at low temperatures. If the gear shift lever moves a little stiffly on a cold engine at a temperature below minus 10 degrees, mineral oil is probably poured into the box.
Thanks for subscribing!
This feature makes it somewhat difficult to start the engine in cold weather, and also increases the load on it and the gearbox, even to the point of overheating. That is why many Kalina owners who operate their car in the winter prefer to immediately fill in semi-synthetic or synthetic gear oil instead of mineral.
When checking the oil level, pay attention to its color and the presence of foreign particles. Please note that transmission oil has a slightly different shade than engine oil.
If the oil has become very dark, particles of mechanical impurities are clearly visible in it - it must be changed, regardless of the mileage.
Checking the oil level in the gearbox should become a regular ritual for a car owner who has no desire to invest in gearbox repairs. Timely diagnosis and oil change in the gearbox will eliminate this need.

The design of the Kalina-2 family of cars uses a cable gearbox, produced by AvtoVAZ since 2013. A feature of the manual transmission, designated as VAZ-2181, is the following: a diagnostic probe is not provided in its design. The inspection and diagnostic hole is located on the side and not on the top side of the crankcase, which will not add convenience when changing the oil. How to perform this operation, that is, how to replace the manual transmission fluid, is discussed further.

With timely replacement, the life of the piston group and, as a result, the entire engine as a whole is significantly extended. The frequency of replacement depends on mileage and operating conditions. For vehicles under warranty, please refer to the routine maintenance table.
If the car is no longer under warranty, then, according to the author’s point of view, one replacement per year is enough - preferably in the spring, so that the engine does not overheat in the heat, or in the autumn, so that it starts better in the winter. It is up to the car owner to decide how and what kind of oil to pour, depending on the capabilities and his preferences.
Let me just say that high-quality oil contains many different additives, including detergent, non-stick, anti-friction, etc. features. In this video clip we will tell you in detail how to change the engine oil yourself.
And you will determine how to replace the oil filter
Before changing the oil, manufacturers recommend “flushing” the engine lubrication system with special detergent oils or additives. By the way, debates on forums on the topic “to wash or not to wash” give an approximately 50/50 split between opponents, so in the end it’s up to you to decide.
For the lazy, “five-minute” washes have been created, which are poured directly into the old oil and then merged with it after 10-15 minutes. engine idling. More thorough car owners prefer to first drain the old oil, then add flushing oil, then let the engine run for 10-15 minutes. at idle speed and drain the flushing oil with the remaining old oil and carbon deposits.
And only later is new oil added. It must be emphasized that the author did not find any particular difference between the above-described washing methods. Oil changes are best done in an inspection hole or ditch.
Below are tips for replacing in the “field”, in other words, at a time when it is not possible to use the pit. materials and necessary tools: 4 liters of oil in a canister, oil filter, flushing oil or “five-minute” flushing, 17 mm spanner, drain container, jack, flat area.
The operation refers to “unclean” types of work, so take care of special clothing. Let us note that quite recently we were preparing to independently change the oil in the Lada Kalina engine. Attention!
Oil draining must be done on a warm engine. Procedure: 1. For ease of work, put the car on a jack and remove the right front wheel. It will take little time, and the work will be much more ergonomic.
For insurance, be sure to place wheel chocks under the wheels. And push the removed wheel and spare tire, placed on top of each other, under the car next to the jack. That's it, safety precautions have been observed, you can start working.
2. Place a container for draining under the drain hole in the engine crankcase. It can be made from an old plastic canister, cut lengthwise. 3. Use a 17-mm spanner to unscrew the plug, being careful because the oil will be hot.
4. Unscrew the oil filler cap. 5. After draining is complete (at least 5 minutes), screw the plug into the crankcase and fill the engine with flushing oil. 6. Start the engine for 10 - 15 minutes. 7. Repeat steps 2-3, not forgetting to screw the plug in the crankcase later.
8. Unscrew the oil filter. In most cases, it can be unscrewed by hand. If you cannot unscrew the filter, you need to use a special puller, or (at your own risk!) - a wonderful screwdriver, with which we pierce the old filter completely and twist it by the screwdriver, like a handle.
9. Lubricate the sealing ring on the new filter with engine oil and screw the filter into place. Excessive hardening should be applied along with this
not required. 10. Fill in new oil through the oil filler neck.
This operation can be conveniently created using a homemade “funnel” cut from the neck of a plastic bottle. Do not empty the entire contents of the canister!
Otherwise, your oil level will be higher than normal, which can lead to increased oil pressure and, as a result, leakage through the gaskets. Place approximately 0.8 liters of oil in a canister. You will need it for gravy in the future. That's it, the replacement is complete.
We tighten the oil filler cap and start the engine. A short blink of the emergency pressure light (until the new filter is filled) - and the engine bubbles smoothly at idle. All that remains is to dispose of the old oil. PS
After some time (10 - 15 minutes after stopping the engine), make sure the oil level on the dipstick in the crankcase is reliable. If necessary, add it so that the level is between the min and max marks. Oil pressure sensor in Kalina: purpose of the device. What you need to know about changing the oil. Everyone knows that the oil change in the Lada Granta automatic transmission is carried out only at a service center. In general, such a replacement is not required according to the regulations, since the service interval is 100 thousand km.
But changing the oil in an automatic transmission will not be more difficult than in a car with a manual transmission. The problem is that it will be impossible to control the level, although a probe for control is provided in the design of the “automatic machine”.
The volume of drained oil can be estimated from the video.

In an automatic transmission, the oil cannot be changed. When changing manual transmission oil, it is preferable to use material with a viscosity of 75W85, 75W90.
How to add transmission oil
The main thing is that the dipstick plug should always be screwed in as far as possible. The volume of transmission fluid in a manual transmission is 2200 ml, but, according to reviews, it is about 3 liters. The material used is from the factory manufactured (see table above).
The process of changing the oil in an automatic transmission on Grant
The process of changing the Lada Granta oil is in many ways similar to the standard operation on other cars with automatic transmission. Before you begin the main work, you need to prepare the available tools and devices:
- wrench for 10, 16 and 19;
- polyhedron by 6;
- waste container;
- funnel or syringe;
- a hose with a 20 mm hole about 3 meters;
- lint-free rags;
- new transmission fluid.
There are two ways to replace used oil: partial and complete. The choice of the necessary method depends on the check: if the oil has completely changed its color to black and has a burning smell, then it is necessary to replace the entire composition of the liquid.
The procedure for performing a complete oil change in an automatic transmission in a Lada Granta:
- Open the hood of the car and disconnect the battery;
- Unscrew the housing screws and remove it;
- Using a 6mm wrench, unscrew the pan plug;
- Drain some of the oil into a prepared container;
- Place the tube in the drain hole and drain the remaining liquid;
- After the oil has completely come out, tighten the drain tank;
- Open the filler hole and insert a funnel into it;
- Fill in new oil for the Lada Granta automatic transmission in the amount of 5 liters. If the oil enters with excess, then the unnecessary amount will leave through the control hole;
- Before installing the air filter box, clean the magnets in the tray;
- Install the air filter housing in its place;
- Start the engine and wait until the excess lubricant drains out;
- Tighten the plug tightly.
During the process of changing transmission fluid, the temperature in the system should not exceed 45 degrees. It is better to carry out the procedure on a cooled engine; this will not reduce efficiency.
Before choosing which oil to fill in the Lada Granta automatic transmission, you need to determine its volume. No more than 5.5 liters of liquid can be poured into the crankcase. If a partial replacement is made, 3.5 liters of oil will be required.
Tools
While working, you will need some tools and materials.
- key for 8 and 10;
- spanner or wrench for 17 and 19;
- crosshead screwdriver;
- container for waste liquid (for example, a 5-liter bottle with a cut out side);
- plunger syringe or medical bulb (for manual transmission);
- hose for filling fluid (for automatic transmission);
- funnel for the hose;
- gloves;
- transmission oil, according to the gearbox.
If you do not have any tool or device, you can use improvised means.
How to check the oil level in a Lada Kalina gearbox: photo
The manufacturer AvtoVAZ suggests that replacing and adding oil to the Lada Kalina gearbox is not necessary. But, as the practice and experience of motorists shows, it is periodically necessary to check the level and add fluid to the gearbox.
Video on how to change the oil in a gearbox and check its level:
Lada Kalina Gearbox oil change
Transmission oil level
Checking the oil level in the gearbox can be done in two ways. Both are effective and will show an accurate level. So, let's look at each one separately:
- Using a dipstick that shows the gearbox oil level. This is the simplest method, since the liquid amount mark should be at about to “maximum”, somewhere in the middle.
- The second method is more difficult, since you will have to completely drain the oil, measure the amount and pour it back into the gearbox.
Both methods are good, but motorists use the first method, and the second is used when changing the oil in the gearbox.
Oils that can be poured into Kalina gearbox
The automaker AvtoVAZ recommends filling only high-quality oil (read more about choosing oil in the gearbox here), so you need to know what kind of fluid is filled with Magnum 300,” so you only need to use it for topping up. If you have already changed the oil, then add exactly the oil that was filled.
It is worth noting that the following oils are suitable for the Kalina gearbox:
List of oils that are recommended for filling into the Kalina gearbox according to the AvtoVAZ manual
Checking and refilling process
So, to check the oil level in the Kalina gearbox, you need to place the car on a flat surface. The level must be checked 5-10 minutes after the car has been driven. This is due to the fact that the oil must be heated and have time to drain from the shafts and gears.
Tools that are used to add oil to the gearbox; they are also used to change the fluid in the gearbox
Now, consider the sequential process:
- For convenience, move the air filter housing to the side.
Carefully move the air filter housing to the side - We find the dipstick.
It can be seen near the battery, on the left side of the engine compartment. Pull out the dipstick to check the oil. You can find it on the left side of the engine compartment, under the battery. - Raise the dipstick and wipe it with a rag.
- Put it back in and take it out.
- Let's see how much the level shows.
If the indicator is between “minimum” and “maximum”, then everything is fine. The oil level in the box is between the “maximum” and “minimum” indicators. - If the level tends to about 0, then it is necessary to add 200-250 grams of liquid.
Using a tube and funnel, add oil - We insert the dipstick back and fix it tightly.
Now the oil level is checked and fluid is added if necessary.
The video shows the most basic mistakes when choosing transmission oil
Mistakes when choosing transmission oil (Avtotema TV)
Checking the oil level in the Lada Kalina gearbox is quite easy and does not require special skills and knowledge. Topping up is carried out using a funnel, which you can make yourself from a tube and a bottle. For topping up, only the fluid that is poured into the gearbox is used. The frequency of oil level diagnostics is 10,000 km or every 3 months of operation.
Procedure
First, you need to take care of the presence of a hole or overpass, check the position of the fluid level (not a single lubricant change in the gearbox should be done without this):
Draining waste
If dark-colored metal dust is found in the waste, this is a sure sign that the box needs to be washed. The flushing liquid is poured into the box, the drive wheel is raised using a jack, the engine is started and first gear is engaged. After 10 minutes, the engine is turned off, and the flushing MTF located in the gearbox is drained.
Replacement steps
- Remove the dipstick and install a funnel in the hole;
- Pour approximately 3 liters of MTF into the manual transmission, check the level with a dipstick (if you frequently use 5th gear, it is better to fill it a little more than the average value, closer to the upper value).
In the automatic transmission of Lada Kalina 2, the content of transmission lubricant more than prescribed is not permissible, as this can lead to ignition.
Necessary equipment:
- Key for 8 and key for 10;
- Socket wrench or wrench for 17 and 19;
- Phillips screwdriver;
- Canister for processing;
- For manual transmission - a medical bulb (plunger syringe);
- With automatic transmission - filling hose, funnel;
- Gloves;
- Lubricant suitable for this box.
Instructions:
Regardless of the type of box, a heated Lada Kalina car must stand on a flat surface, overpass, or pit.
- In manual transmission, remove the protective boot;
- Using a key number 17, unscrew the drain plug, after draining the liquid into the substituted container (about 15 minutes), tighten it again;
- Unscrew the filler plug (located just above the drain hole) and pour in lubricating fluid. The optimal indicator is at the bottom mark of the filler hole. You can use a syringe or bulb;
- Tighten the plug and return the protective boot to its place.
Transmission lubricant: replacement rules
What oil to use
It is worth noting that the second generation of Kalina has modifications with manual and automatic transmissions. Lada Kalina 2 is equipped with a hydromechanical automatic transmission model JF414E with four gears. This means that each type of transmission requires different products.
If you refer to the instruction manual, you can find out what transmission fluids the Lada Kalina 2 supports.
The following oils are suitable for mechanical transmissions according to factory requirements:
For automatic transmissions, the manufacturer recommends using only Genuine EJ-1ATF oils (from the supplier JX Nippon Oil and Energy Corporation) and Nissan ATF Matic–S. When using other transmission lubricants, problems with the automatic transmission may occur, as well as reduced service life and malfunctions. Warranties do not cover the above problems.
In an automatic transmission, the content of working fluid above the maximum level is unacceptable. Excess lubricant leads to splashes through the breather. If the liquid comes into contact with hot engine parts, it will ignite.

After replacement, it is impossible to see the level on the dipstick. Now about my impressions: when I read in the notes about soft gear shifting after replacement, I thought people were lying and writing on the placebo effect. It turns out I was wrong, a test drive after changing the automatic transmission oil showed that the effect was amazing. Now I drive like a CVT, the transition 1-2 is not noticeable at all. I recommend to everyone.

in Kalina: how much to pour?
The Kalina uses a 5-speed manual transmission. The manufacturer recommends adding 3100 grams of oil. But motorists recommend pouring 100-200 grams more. This way we will eliminate extraneous noise in the box and the hum of the shafts at speed (especially the fifth gear gears).
As we have already noted, gear oil is very viscous. Even when hot, it hardly comes out of the box. Therefore, some of the liquid remains on the walls of the pan and on the shaft gears themselves. Experts recommend spilling a little fluid before replacing. To do this, pour 100-150 grams of oil into the box without tightening the plug, and wait until it comes out of the hole. Many are surprised by the result: clean transmission fluid was poured into the box, and after a couple of seconds black slurry came out. This way we will clean the gearbox as much as possible of old lubricant. This is especially useful when switching to a product from a different manufacturer and with a different viscosity.
general information
The first Lada cars with automatic transmission rolled off the production line in 2012, and their sales began at the same time. The cost of the car was about 400 thousand rubles. For this money, the car enthusiast gets a car with a 1.6-liter engine and 98 horsepower.

Japanese automatic transmission in Lada Granta - works like a clock
The process of integrating the Japanese gearbox with the Tolyatti Lada engine was very difficult. To coordinate the operation of these units, domestic engineers had to turn to their Austrian colleagues for help. Many settings of the Japanese automatic transmission had to be abandoned, since the box with them was too slow. As a result, VAZ specialists, together with the Austrian company AVL, managed to eliminate all the shortcomings of the system and successfully match the JATCO transmission with the Lada engine.
Test drive Lada Granta automatic (automatic transmission) video
Today, about 50,000 Lada cars with automatic transmission are sold annually. In addition to Granta, later automatic transmission was also installed on Kalina. Needless to say about the reliability of the JATCO transmission itself, if it is equipped with many world-famous car models. According to the results of numerous test drives and reviews from owners, it can be stated that the quality and reliability of the Grant automatic transmission are ensured at a high level. The domestic auto industry has finally managed to create a truly high-quality product.
What kind of oil is poured into
The privilege to supply lubricant to the Lada Vesta manual transmission box was given to Tatneft and the French ELF.
and its properties
Vesta comes off the AvtoVAZ assembly line with a lubricant that is well compatible with gearbox elements and is suitable for the Russian climate.
What is poured into the “mechanics” at the factory:
- Rosneft: Kinetik SAE 75W-85 API GL-4 is a mineral-based semi-synthetic oil with additives that increase oxidation resistance and high temperature-viscosity characteristics. Designed for heavily loaded gears. Having a specific density of 875, it hardens at -42 °C, and the flash point is +210 °C. The product is resistant to foaming, prevents mechanical wear and scuffing of unit components, and protects against corrosion.
- ELF: TRANSELF NFJ 75W80 - mineral-based manual transmission oil for Lada Vestas, but with the inclusion of synthetic components - ensures stable operation of the gearbox, does not oxidize, does not foam, and does not age for a long time. Used in JH3 510, TL4, where noise and vibration of parts are excluded.
- "Tatneft": TM 4-12 Translux 75w85 API GL-4 is a semi-synthetic product with additives that ensure thermal stability and minimal volatility of the substance.
All Vesta stock all-season lubricants have high anti-corrosion properties.
This quality is important for VAZ manual transmissions, which, according to owners, have vulnerable parts, including a brass synchronizer blocking ring
Choosing the best oil
When choosing oil for the gearbox, and for other units of the Lada Kalina, you must take only the original fluid. Since, recently, the market has a significant share of fakes, it is necessary to approach the issue carefully.
A table of recommended oils for Kalina, as well as their coding, was found in the factory service manual.
Manufacturer's recommended gearbox oil for Lada Kalina
It is worth remembering that only transmission oil is poured into the gearbox. After a major overhaul, at the time of running-in, you can use the simplest thing - TAD-17.
Consequences of untimely replacement
Since, over time, gearbox oil loses its properties, both physical and chemical, this can cause the following consequences:
- Wear of shafts and gears. This is due to the fact that after 150,000 km the oil loses its physical properties, namely its cooling effect. Thus, rotation of shafts and friction of gears leads to heating and increased wear.
- The loss of chemical properties will also lead to wear and accumulation of metal shavings in the oil, which will affect not only the gears, but also the bearings.
All these reasons can lead to increased wear, which will lead to premature overhaul of the gearbox.
Washer fluid, antifreeze and the rest
The glass washer tank, the volume of which in Kalina-2 is 5 liters, is recommended to be filled with a suitable liquid:
Brand | Manufacturer |
REVIEW-E | LLC "ASD" (Tolyatti) |
REVIEW | JSC "Orsknefteorgsintez" (Orsk) |
SPARK | NPP "Makromer" (Vladimir) |
NET MILE 40 | Tosol-Sintez LLC (Dzerzhinsk) |
The brake system filler can be ROSDOT fluid, produced by TC Tosol-Sintez LLC, or KAPROS-DOT produced by Sibur-Neftekhim. These materials are produced in the city of Dzerzhinsk. The volume of brake fluid to be replaced will be 0.45 liters.
New design of ROSDOT labels
The volume of coolant in the engine cooling system is 7.84 liters. When replacing, it is recommended to use the following materials:
Brand | Manufacturer |
FELIX CARBOX, TOSOL-TS FELIX | Tosol-Sintez LLC (Dzerzhinsk) |
Cool Stream Standard, G-Energy Antifreeze, Cool Stream Premium | JSC "Technoform" (Klimovsk) |
ANTIFREEZE SINTEC | CJSC "Obninskorgsintez" (Obninsk) |
About the resource
The procedure for changing transmission oil differs significantly from engine oil. The manufacturer advises changing the transmission every 75 thousand kilometers. But experienced motorists recommend reducing this figure to 60, and if the car was new, then even to 30 thousand kilometers. Why is this so? New parts form small chips during the grinding process. Its presence in oil is undesirable. Therefore, such lubricant must be replaced as soon as possible.
Further, during operation, the oil will be subject to different temperature changes. Production will decrease, but this does not mean that after 30 thousand kilometers it will stop altogether. And the factory oil itself is not of good quality. Therefore, in order to keep the transmission intact, the oil in the Lada Kalina gearbox must be changed at least every 60 thousand kilometers.
Why might oil leak?
Transmission malfunctions are accompanied by characteristic sounds, which determine the area of the breakdown. In addition, there are other factors that are a signal for repair of the unit.
If there is noise in the gearbox, the bearings or gears are most likely worn out. The problem can be corrected by replacing parts. The problem may arise due to a lack of the required amount of lubricant. In this case, it is necessary to add fluid to the automatic transmission urgently.
An automatic transmission oil change on a Grant may be required as a result of a leak being detected. Before you begin the filling procedure, it is necessary to determine the cause of the oil leak. Characteristic spots on a problem area or puddles of liquid on the asphalt will indicate a damaged unit.
The most common cause of oil leakage on LADA GRANTA is:
- wear of oil seals, hinge or rod - the problem can be corrected by replacing damaged parts;
- loose fastening of the crankcase, box cover or poor sealing of the assembly - it is recommended to replace the gaskets or sealing agent.
Characteristic
The Lada Kalina uses a classic five-speed manual transmission. This box takes its history back to the days of the “nines”. AvtoVAZ recently released a new VAZ-2180 gearbox with a cable drive. The transmission has undergone many changes, but the lubrication principle remains the same. So, several liters of transmission fluid are filled in the pan. It does not splash and is not inflated by a pump. Lubrication occurs naturally - when rotating, the gears of the intermediate and other shafts are dipped into this bath of oil. This ensures lubrication of the rubbing elements.
Many people don't know this, but this is not the only function of oil. In addition to lubrication, it also provides heat dissipation. This is why when the fluid level is low, the box quickly overheats. The gears themselves run dry, which causes a significant amount of wear. It then accumulates in the oil. Over time, its amount increases, and the liquid itself becomes darker. That is why you need to regularly monitor the oil level in the box. For this purpose, Kalina has a special probe. The manufacturer does not recommend operating the vehicle if the oil level is below the average mark.
Technical characteristics of automatic transmission Lada Granta
With the installation of an automatic transmission, the factory assembly of Grants has undergone some changes. So, due to the increased weight of the car, stiffer springs were installed. The ground clearance also decreased from 160 mm to 140.
Lada automatic transmission diagram
The Lada Granta transmission has automatic transmission operating modes that are classic for an automatic:
P - parking
R - reverse movement
N - “neutral”
D - vehicle movement forward
2 - forward movement limited to 2nd gear
1 - forward movement limited to 1st gear
What kind of gearbox is installed on the Lada Granta?
The Grant is equipped with a reliable automatic machine from the Japanese manufacturer JATCO, model JF 414E. What is noteworthy is that this unit is installed on Nissan Almera and March, which have an engine capacity of up to 1.6 liters. There have never been any serious complaints about the JF414E, which is why AvtoVAZ engineers chose it. The valve body is quite reliable, and is not very often found in service workshops. All you need is to change the oil and filter on time, although this is not officially necessary, but we still recommend it.
All motor oils recommended for use
Engine oil is usually replaced along with a paper filter. This consumes 2900 ml of fluid (for versions with automatic transmission – 4100 ml). The intervals between replacements are indicated in the service book. Recommended materials for use:

It is recommended to change the oil at a service station (service station). , however, the owner himself can add liquid to the tank.
Adding oil to the expansion tank
The oil level is controlled as follows: when the engine is turned off, unscrew the diagnostic dipstick located near the cylinder head cover between the third and second cylinders. A secondary check is carried out no earlier than after 3–5 minutes. after topping up.
The factory usually fills it with semi-synthetic material with a viscosity of 5W30 produced by Rosneft OJSC. Check the information by opening the service book.
