How to change the lubricant in a manual transmission with your own hands?

You can change the oil in a manual transmission with a cable yourself.

How often does it change?

The service life of lubricating fluid in mechanical units is also 5 years or 75 thousand kilometers. If the car has passed this interval, the oil must be changed.

What oil is better to use?

The manufacturer recommends pouring exclusively Lukoil TM-4 oil. This lubricant passed all studies and tests in AvtoVAZ laboratories and was recognized by the manufacturer. Lukoil TM-4 lubricants with various types of viscosity are supplied to the market. Depending on the region in which the machine will be used, the consumer is given a choice of liquids of the standard 75W-80, 75W-85, 75W-90, 80W-85 or 80W-90.

Checking the oil level and required amount

On older mechanical transmissions with a cable drive, the oil meter is located in the same place, in the engine compartment under the plastic housing of the air purifier. If the gearbox is equipped with a dipstick, then you can check the level of the substance in the unit in the same way as on an automatic transmission. But if your car is equipped with transmission number 2181, then such gearboxes are not equipped with meters. To check the fluid volume, you will have to unscrew the control screw on the transmission unit. Ideally, the lubricant should be near the bottom edge of the hole.

The oil volume depends on the type of gearbox. Mechanical units with number 2180 contain about 3.1 liters of lubricant. Manual transmission 2181 can hold about 2.2 liters of lubricant.

Preparing for replacement

What to prepare for changing the lubricant:

  • wrench size 17, it is more convenient to use a socket with a tip;
  • fresh gearbox lubricant;
  • watering can or funnel;
  • a hose with a syringe if your transmission is not equipped with a filler hole;
  • a container in which used lubricant will be collected;
  • rags.

Stages of work

How to change the oil yourself:

  1. Drive the car into a garage with a pit or onto an overpass. The process of changing the fluid must be carried out on a warm, but not hot, engine. The machine must be on a level surface.
  2. Raise the parking brake lever inside the car. Open the hood and loosen the screw on the negative terminal of the battery, then disconnect it. We recommend placing wheel chocks under the wheels of the Lada Granta.
  3. Reach under the bottom of the car and find the drain plug on the transmission housing and assess its condition. If the area around the lid is dirty, clean it with a cloth to remove dirt. This will prevent them from entering the vehicle's gearbox lubrication system.
  4. Place a bucket or basin under the drain plug; a cut bottle will also work. Use a wrench to unscrew the cap and set it aside. When dismantling, keep in mind that oil may splash out after unscrewing, so use gloves. The process of draining the working fluid will begin.
  5. Once all the grease has been drained, replace the drain bolt. If the seal on it is worn out, it must be replaced.
  6. After this, new fluid is filled in. For greater convenience, we recommend removing not only the body of the cleaning device, but also disconnecting the clamps securing the expansion tank pipe. The air filter housing must be removed or moved to the side.
  7. Remove the dipstick from the filler neck. Place a watering can in it. If there is no hole for the meter in your car, then install a hose into the control neck, to which connect a watering can or syringe. Fill in fresh fluid, constantly monitoring its volume. Start the car and do a test drive, after which check the oil level again. The substance level should normally be between the MIN and MAX marks on the dipstick.

What will happen if you don't change?

Similar problems will arise as in the case of an automatic transmission.

Preparing for replacement

First the box needs to be warmed up. Then they place the car on the pit, stop it and try to remove one plug. We are talking about the control plug (key “17”).

If nothing happens with the plug, you will have to change the oil without supervision. This is no longer good. Try unscrewing the switch located on the top of the crankcase.

The oil volume in the Lada Granta gearbox is known to everyone - it is 2.3 liters. But it is still better to perform the replacement with control. Filling is done either through the control hole or through the switch hole. Access to the latter is blocked by a filter.

Filter housing operation

First, disconnect the “negative” terminal (key “10”). Then you can use a regular Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the mounting screws.

The first two dismantling steps

The thin clamp that secures the expansion tank hose is also removed (see photo).

Disconnect a couple of connectors: the mass air flow sensor and the adsorber valve connector. The first of them is oval (photo below). And the second one is turned off like this: tighten the tongue, remove the terminal block.

Down with all terminal blocks!

The filter housing can be moved to the side in the final step. There is no need to disconnect it from the corrugation.

Rubber fasteners can be defeated this way: the rubber band is held with pliers, and the body is pulled back (to the left, forward). Start with the right front support.

Reconnaissance in force

We are trying to remove the reverse switch. We look for a plastic connector on the crankcase (see photo) and immediately disconnect it.

Using a 22mm round wrench, try to unscrew the switch housing. Cancel the replacement if nothing can be done - neither unscrew the “top” plug, nor remove the switch.

When the switch is returned to its place, the threads are treated with sealant. The tightening torque should be 28-45 N*m.

Automatic transmission

The dipstick is located under the air filter. It is almost impossible to pull it out without dismantling the air filter housing, so the housing is removed and moved to the side.

The level is checked only “when cold”.

The oil is filled with Dextron: either 2nd class or 3rd class. The oil dipstick should indicate what type of oil is in the gearbox.

Antifreeze

This is the liquid that cools the engine. We recommend checking the antifreeze level along with checking other vehicle fluids once a month.

You should also check the antifreeze level if the engine overheats, and if the warning icon lights up on the dashboard.

To check the fluid level, you need to find the correct reservoir under the hood. The antifreeze level in it should be between the MIN and MAX marks.

If the level is below the minimum, you need to top it up. Only add liquid of the same color as is already in the tank.

IMPORTANT: Do not exceed the maximum fluid level. When the engine is running, the fluid heats up and needs room to expand.

IMPORTANT: Do not open the reservoir cap until the engine has cooled. Otherwise, you risk serious burns. While the liquid is hot, it is under pressure in the tank.

How to check?

To be able to check the oil level in the box, it is necessary to carry out a number of simple operations:

  1. Turn off the engine (it is absolutely necessary to inspect with the engine turned off).
  2. Remove the filter housing.
  3. Remove the water level indicator from the hole in the gearbox.

  • We look closely at what the design is intended for; if the water level in the gearbox is between MIN and MAX, that means what remains for our client to do in order; if it is lower, then it means it is necessary to top it up to the norm.

Changing the oil in the Lada Granta gearbox

  1. We drive our “Grant” into the “pit”, having previously warmed up the gearbox;
  2. We remove the plastic covers under the hood and dismantle the air filter to get to the filler hole.

  3. We dismantle the plastic gearbox protection (on most cars with manual transmission it is not installed, so we clean the space near the drain plug on the gearbox housing from dirt and adhering sand);
  4. Having reached the drain bolt (aka plug), we unscrew it with the “17” key, having previously prepared the container for “working off”;
  5. We wait for all the used oil to be drained (at least 15-20 minutes);
  6. Tighten the drain plug, first changing the sealing gasket. On an automatic transmission from Nissan, the drain bolt is changed every time the transmission is replaced;
  7. Insert a hose with a funnel into the filler hole and add oil to the maximum level.

After changing the oil, start the Lada and, with the clutch depressed, engage the gears one by one for several minutes, starting with first and ending with reverse. After this, turn off the engine and check the oil level with a dipstick: it should be slightly below the maximum. Add liquid to about. The oil change on the Grant is completed.

When changing the lubricant on an automatic transmission, it is enough to place the gearshift lever in each position with an interval of at least 5 seconds. After this, you need to check the level using a dipstick. A level below o leads to air entering the oil pump and subsequent damage to the unit. Exceeding o can lead to serious damage to the gearbox and even fire of the car.

If the oil is drained during the repair of parts of the gearbox, chassis, or internal combustion engine, then it must be disposed of and new oil must be filled into the Granta. Re-use of the lubricant is not permitted even if the service interval mark has not been reached.

The manual transmission differs from analogues in its simplicity and reliability. It is important to understand that such a transmission still requires regular maintenance, which allows you to maximize the service life of the unit. As for automatic transmissions, in this case the requirements for the quality, level and condition of the oil are even more stringent.

In practice, this means that the owner must not only change the oil in a timely manner according to the regulations, but also constantly monitor its level, color, smell, degree of contamination, etc. In this article we will look at how to check the oil level in a manual and automatic Grant box, as well as what to look for during such a check.

How to check?

In order to check the oil level in the gearbox, you need to carry out a number of simple operations:

  1. Turn off the engine (check with the engine off).
  2. Remove the filter housing.
  3. Remove the fluid level indicator from the hole in the gearbox.

Which oil is best to fill according to the regulations?

The standard manual does not say what kind of oil to fill in a Granta box with a cable drive. The answer is in the instructions included with other cars also equipped with the “2181” box. Here is the list:

  • Gazpromneft – 80W90, 80W85
  • TNK TRANS KP – 80W85
  • TNK TRANS KP SUPER – 75W90
  • LUKOIL TM-4 – 75W85, 75W80, 80W85, 75W90, 80W90

  • ROSNEFT KINETIC (Novokuibyshevsk) – 80W85 (GL-4), 75W90 (GL-4/GL-5)
  • TATNEFT TRANSLUX TM-4-12 – 75W85
  • SHELL: SPIRAX S5 ATE or TRANSAXLE OIL – 75W90 (GL-4/GL-5)

If the quality class is not specified, the material complies with GL-4 standards.

Quality class “GL-5” has its own characteristics. With material of this class, gears are better preserved rather than synchronizers.

We focus on temperature

When choosing oil for the box, use the table:

  • Range “-12 – +50 Gr. C" – 85W90
  • «-26 – +45» – 80W90
  • «-26 – +35» – 80W85
  • «-40 – +35» – 75W80 or 75W85
  • «-40 – +45» – 75W90

The viscosity grade is indicated on the right.

How do you know when it's time to change the lubricant?

Replacing the substance in the automatic transmission is necessary in the following cases:

  • When reaching a low level. The level is checked using a special probe, which is provided in the design of the box.
  • Wear. Checking the quality of the oil is done visually and by smell. If it is black and smells like burning, then it most likely needs replacement. A dark color indicates a large amount of deposits and dirt. The filter can handle some of them, but when it gets clogged, the automatic transmission will quickly break down.
  • Checking the level and quality of the fluid in the box is carried out once every 1-2 months. If you need a replacement, it is better not to experiment, but to buy oil that is recommended for the automatic transmission of Lada Granta - Nissan Matic-D.
