Changing the oil in the gearbox Lada 2101 (VAZ 2101)

We change it with our own hands

You can change the transmission oil in the 5th or 4th gearbox of a VAZ 2107 car with a carburetor or injector engine with the help of specialists or yourself. Below we will look at how to change and fill in new grease with your own hands.

Preparation

To replace the lubricant, you must prepare the following:

  • a special syringe with a tube for pouring oil into the unit;
  • a cut-off bottle or other container with a volume of up to two liters into which the waste liquid will be drained;
  • wrench 17;
  • hexagon 12;
  • fresh oil to fill the system;
  • rag.

User Alexey Romanov made a video in which he demonstrated in detail the process of replacing transmission fluid in the domestic “Seven”.

Stages of work

Change the lubricant as follows:

  1. The change procedure is performed on a warm car. This will allow the hot transmission fluid with all wear products to exit the unit faster. But be careful, because on a warm vehicle the fluid temperature can reach 90 degrees.
  2. Using a wrench, unscrew the oil filler cap on the transmission unit.
  3. Before changing the lubricant, the used substance must be drained. To do this, find a drain hole and place a container under it into which the waste will flow. Using a hex wrench, remove the plug.
  4. After this, the procedure for draining the old fluid will begin. Wait about twenty minutes, during which time the lubricant should leave the system.
  5. Then clean the drain plug and replace it.
  6. If, after draining the waste oil, it is noticed that the old oil is dark, almost black, and has signs of wear in the form of metal shavings, we recommend flushing the unit. Since some deposits may remain in it, which will mix with fresh lubricant. For flushing, you will need about one liter of new oil and the same amount of kerosene. Pour the mixture into the unit and screw on the oil filler cap. After this, turn on neutral speed and start the power unit of the car. Let the engine idle for about five minutes, then turn it off. Repeat the draining procedure and screw the hole cap back into place. If there are deposits left in the drained fluid, the flushing process can be repeated.
  7. Now open the filler plug and add new lubricant to it using a syringe with a tube connected. Fill the gearbox with enough oil so that the level is at the lower edge of the oil filler hole. Then the plug needs to be screwed into place.
  8. Start the engine and let it run. You can perform a check ride. After this, diagnose the gearbox under the car for leaks. If there are oil leaks, it is necessary to determine the cause and eliminate it.

1. Find the drain plug and drain the old lubricant 2. Fill the unit with fresh oil using a syringe, monitoring its level

Equipment and tools

What equipment will you need to change the oil:

  • A container for draining used oil - for example, an old bucket or basin.
  • 12mm hex wrench.
  • Socket wrench 17 or socket 17.
  • Protective rubber gloves to avoid getting burned.
  • Oil filter puller – it’s not always possible to unscrew it by hand.

  • Syringe for filling oil.

  • Watering can for pouring oil.

That, in fact, is all that is required.

Technical regulations on the amount of transmission substance

Transmission fluid is monitored every 10 thousand km, i.e. during the next maintenance. Before checking the amount of substance, you need to let the car sit for a while. During this period, the transmission fluid will have time to flow down the walls of the box. If the fluid level reaches the edge of the lower edge of the filler hole, then its volume is quite sufficient, and the oil is not replaced or topped up.

How much transmission oil will be needed when completely replacing it directly depends on the type of gearbox.

According to the technical instructions, the following volume of liquid is established:

  • for 4-mortar – 1.35 l;
  • for a 5-mortar – 1.6 l.

Experienced drivers advise filling the 5-mortar with lubricant slightly above the set level - “as much as it will fit.” To do this, lift the car from the driver's door with a jack. Then add 250–300 g of liquid. This will ensure reliable lubrication of the 5th gear gear. There is no need to be especially afraid of increased pressure on the seals, since excess pressure is released through the breather.

What oil is better to use?

Now let’s look at what kind of lubricant should be poured into the 5-speed transmission of VAZ 2107 cars. In classic cars, the manufacturer recommends using a fluid that meets the GL-4 or GL-5 standards. In this case, the viscosity classification of substances poured into the box should be 75W-90, 75W-85 or 80W-85. Most car owners use oils that meet the GL-4 standard. Such fluids are intended for vehicles with stepped transmissions operating at high speeds and low torque. Also, the use of oils is allowed at low speeds with high torque.

Car owners often add such oils for the winter to ensure good viscosity in cold weather. One of the optimal fluid options is Shell Spirax S5 ATE 75W-90 lubricant.

User Lesha Master in his video showed how the procedure for replacing transmission fluid is performed on classic VAZ cars.

We change the oil in the VAZ 2108 gearbox ourselves

Changing the oil is a routine operation. On the VAZ 2108 this procedure is simple, so it can be performed in your own garage. To do this, you need to choose the right gearbox oil, find free time and use the instructions to carry out the replacement.

How often should I change it?

Every driver should understand that timely replacement of technical fluids extends the life of the vehicle. This also applies to transmission oil. Replacing it ensures normal operation of the transmission.

The technical documentation, which is attached to servicing the VAZ 2108, contains the manufacturer’s recommendations on the frequency of changing the oil in the gearbox. It must be changed every 75 thousand km. But this is the recommended period for operating a car on roads with good pavement and under normal conditions.

Consequences of untimely replacement

What can result from an untimely oil change in the VAZ 2107 gearbox:

  1. The box will be louder. Extraneous noise will appear, uncharacteristic of the gearbox. This may happen when the engine is cold, but as the engine warms up the sounds will disappear. Or the transmission may be noisy regardless of the temperature of the power unit.
  2. When changing gears, a crunching sound or other extraneous sounds may occur. Failure to change the oil in a timely manner will result in it losing its properties and being unable to properly lubricate the internal parts of the gearbox. Replacing the substance often solves the problem of crunching.
  3. Faulty gearbox bearings. If the lubrication is poor, bearing mechanisms will operate under high load conditions. This will cause the parts to wear out faster and soon fail. Wear products from bearings and other elements can clog the oil channels, which will affect the increase in pressure in the lines of the transmission system. As a result, the lubricant will begin to squeeze out the oil seals and seals. This problem can lead to a transmission fluid leak.
  4. The appearance of vibrations during operation of the gearbox. Often the vibrations disappear as the engine warms up, but it is possible that they remain and do not disappear. It is not a fact that the problem is related specifically to the quality of the motor fluid. Perhaps this is a consequence of the use of used oil, which has lost its properties, which led to wear and failure of some structural elements of the unit.
  5. One of the most serious consequences is gearbox failure. If the car is constantly used with used oil, this can lead to breakdown of the unit. The gearbox will need to be repaired.

Reliable operation of the gearbox ensures comfortable operation of the vehicle. Emerging problems with the gearbox sometimes make driving a car impossible. Therefore, the gearbox is rightfully considered one of the most important components of a car.

Oil pressure sensor

If the oil pressure sensor lights up on a Volkswagen Polo, then a fascinating set of checks of the engine and individual components awaits you. What could cause the sensor to light up?

  • Low level of oil pressure in the engine. The simplest option is to check the dipstick, if you add too little to the required level.
  • Oil too old. Look at the color of the oil, rub it with your fingers (you should feel oily). If the oil is too old, it is better to change it to a new one.
  • Oil pump malfunction.
  • The oil pressure sensor has failed. If you checked the previous steps and nothing helped, check the sensor itself. A visual inspection will help determine the external condition of the device. If necessary, replace with a new one. It happens that the sensor is covered in oil, this may indicate that the leak is coming through the sensor. Of course, such a part must be replaced immediately.

How to replace

Replacing the sensor does not require much effort. At the rear of the cylinder block (where the unit number is indicated), press the wire lock and remove the terminal. The sensor itself is unscrewed with a key x 22. When installing a new sensor, make sure that there is a sealing washer.

VAZ 2101 gearbox malfunctions

The VAZ 2101 gearbox is a reliable unit, but since many cars of this model currently have quite a lot of mileage, one should not be surprised at the occurrence of one or another breakdown. Based on this, we should consider the most common malfunctions of “penny” gearboxes.

Gears won't turn on

One of the malfunctions that can appear on the VAZ 2101 gearbox is when the gears do not engage. The problem may be due to several factors. On classic Zhiguli models, gears are engaged hydraulically, that is, when the pedal is pressed, the fluid pushes the piston of the working cylinder, which leads to the movement of the clutch fork and retraction of the disc. If a cylinder leak occurs, the gears will not engage because the fork simply will not move.

In this case, it is necessary to check the fluid level in the reservoir under the hood and inspect the system for leaks.

A rather rare case, but still occurring, is the failure of the clutch fork itself: the part may break. A possible reason is the low quality of the product. To fix the problem you will have to replace the plug. Do not forget also about the release bearing, which, by pressing the clutch petals, disconnects the disc from the flywheel and basket. If a bearing fails, engaging gears becomes problematic. In addition, characteristic sounds (whistle, crunching) may be present.

In addition to the reasons listed, the problem with gear shifting may be related to the gearbox synchronizers. If gears cannot be engaged with the engine running or shifting is difficult, then the likely cause is synchronizers. If these gears wear out, turning on may be completely impossible. To fix the problem, mandatory replacement of parts will be required. In addition, nuances in the functioning of gears may be due to wear of the clutch mechanism (basket or disc).

Knocks out the transmission

On a VAZ 2101, gears can sometimes switch off spontaneously, that is, they are knocked out, for which there are a number of justifications. One of the reasons is a loose flange nut on the secondary shaft of the gearbox. The problem manifests itself as a result of harsh operation of the gearbox, for example, when starting abruptly with quickly releasing the clutch pedal, dynamic driving, or not fully disengaging the clutch. As a result of such driving, the wear of almost all elements of the box accelerates: synchronizer rings, gear teeth, crackers, retaining springs, bearings.

After the flange nut is released, free play (backlash) appears, which leads to shock engagement of the gears. As a result, both forward and reverse gears spontaneously disengage. In addition, the steps can be knocked out when the forks responsible for shifting gears wear out. This also includes the production of seats for rods, as well as springs and balls.

Noise, crunching in the box

The occurrence of certain nuances with the VAZ 2101 gearbox indicates a malfunction of the mechanism elements (breakage or wear). Depending on the nature of the malfunction, the box may make noise, and make different noises. The main causes of noise include:

  • low oil level;
  • bearing wear;
  • large output of the main gear.

As a lubricating fluid, the VAZ 2101 gearbox housing contains transmission oil, which is designed to lubricate parts and reduce friction. If noise appears during vehicle operation, this may indicate a decrease in the level of lubricant or a deterioration in its anti-friction properties. A drop in level may be the cause of oil seal failure, which cannot be overlooked by the box housing - it will be covered in oil. If noise occurs due to wear in the bearings or the main pair, it will be necessary to disassemble the box and replace the failed parts.

In addition to noise, a crunching noise may appear on the “penny” gearbox over time, for example, when shifting gears from second to first. The probable cause is failure of the synchronizer. This problem usually manifests itself during frequent changes from upshift to downshift at high speed, while the manufacturer recommends performing similar actions at low speed. The way out of this situation is to disassemble the box and replace the synchronizer of the corresponding gear. If a crunching noise occurs during any shifting, the cause is wear on the clutch basket, which leads to incomplete gear engagement and the appearance of this problem.

Recommendations for choosing oil

Any oil with viscosity values 75W90, 75W85, 80W85, 80W90, 85W90 is suitable for filling into a mechanical five- or four-speed VAZ gearbox. Questions arise when it is necessary to solve the dilemma of which oil is better to fill in the VAZ-2106 gearbox: mineral water, semi-synthetic or synthetic.

An important and at the same time practically the only advantage of mineral water is its low cost, which is one and a half to two times lower than synthetics or semi-synthetics. This is due to the composition of such a lubricating fluid, which does not contain any additives. At the same time, the lubricating properties of mineral oil are quite decent, allowing you to operate a car without changing the oil for 60 - 75 thousand kilometers. A significant disadvantage of mineral water is a decrease in viscosity in severe frost, which makes it difficult to change gears on a cold engine.

The only drawback of semi-synthetic and synthetic gear oils is their high cost. But they have more than enough advantages: excellent manufacturability, the presence of wear-reducing additives for gearbox parts, and the possibility of trouble-free operation in a wide temperature range.

Among some car enthusiasts, there is an opinion that the use of synthetic oil in the VAZ-2106 gearbox contributes to squeezing out the oil seals, which leads to their leakage. In reality, such problems have nothing to do with the type of transmission fluid used; their cause lies in the wear of parts and components of the gearbox.

Transmission oil change intervals

Before replacing the transmission fluid in the “Seven” gearbox, you first need to study the instruction manual that comes with the car. It is there that the automaker indicates the exact period between replacements. And according to this document, the transmission fluid must be changed once every 3 years or every 60 thousand km of the vehicle. Unless, of course, there are other reasons to replace it ahead of schedule.

Recommendations for correct fluid replacement: To ensure that the old mixture flows out quickly and in full, the replacement should be done when the engine is warmed up to operating temperature. All actions during the fluid replacement process should be carried out using rubber gloves. This will help protect your hands from burns if hot oil gets on your skin.

In addition, you need to protect your face and eyes. The lubricant should be changed in an inspection pit, overpass or using lifts. During replacement, you need to pay attention to the presence of metal components in the used liquid. If such chips are present, then you should start repairing the transmission as soon as possible. The five-speed gearbox of the VAZ 2107 has a certain nuance

A little more transmission fluid should be poured into it - approximately 250 ml. This is due to the design features of the gearbox

Tools and accessories

To change the oil in the “six” yourself, you will need the following tools and materials:

  1. wrench 17 (if the fasteners do not give in, an extension wrench may be required);
  2. a 12mm hex wrench, preferably also with a long tube, to increase the leverage of the applied force;
  3. waste container with a volume of 2 liters;
  4. a special syringe characterized by a curved end (a regular medical syringe is also suitable; instead of a needle, a hose about 25 centimeters long is attached to it);
  5. rags.

To change the oil, it is advisable to place the car in a pit or overpass; to top up the transmission fluid, this is not necessary.

Frequency of lubricant replacement

According to official regulations, changing the gearbox oil on a car with a carburetor or injection engine should be carried out every 60 thousand kilometers or once every three years. It all depends on what happens faster. There are other nuances that affect the frequency of changing the lubricant, for example, the characteristics of the oil used. If the owner fills the gearbox of his car with low-quality fluid or motor oil instead of transmission oil, then the frequency of its replacement will be significantly lower. In this case, the structural elements of the gearbox may be destroyed from the inside.

What is required for replacement?

We advise you to approach changing the oil in the VAZ 2107 gearbox very responsibly and stock up on a certain set of consumables and tools, including:

  • transmission oil in the required volume (more on this below);
  • hexagon 12;
  • rags;
  • key to 17;
  • syringe for pouring oil;
  • five-liter container for used lubricant.

The volume of oil in the VAZ 2107 gearbox depends on the type of gearbox:

  • for four-speed - 1.35 liters;
  • for a five-speed transmission - 1.6 liters.

Gearbox oil for VAZ 2101

The oil in the “penny” gearbox, like in any other vehicle unit, needs to be replaced periodically. But before you perform this procedure, you need to know when and how to replace it and what lubricant to use.

What kind of oil to pour into the box of a VAZ 2101

Today there is a wide selection of transmission oils for cars. The difference between them lies in the additives used, or, more precisely, in their classes. There are the following classes of markings: from GL 1 to GL 5. For the VAZ 2101 gearbox, the best option is considered to be GL 5 class oil with a viscosity grade of 85W90 or 80W90.

This lubricant is intended for hypoid gears and provides good lubrication of rubbing elements even under high loads. In addition, GL 5 oil can be used not only for the gearbox, but also for the rear axle. Of the manufacturers, preference should be given to those who are suitable in terms of price.

Checking the oil level

For the gearbox to function properly, the oil level in the crankcase must always be optimal. It needs to be checked periodically. If the grease level in the box is normal, it should be level with the bottom edge of the filling hole. The oil volume in the VAZ 2101 gearbox crankcase is 1.35 liters.

How often to change the oil in a VAZ 2101 gearbox

Although transmission oil is rarely changed, you still need to know when this procedure is necessary. As a rule, on a “classic” it is done every 40–60 thousand km. mileage or 3 years from the date of filling.

How to drain the oil

To drain the oil from a VAZ 2101 gearbox, you will need a hex wrench and a container of suitable volume, for example, a cut-off plastic bottle. Using a hexagon, unscrew the drain plug, which is located in the lower cover of the crankcase, and drain the oil.

The drain plug is wiped clean of dirt and screwed back into place.

In addition, you need to pay attention to the drained oil and, if there is metal dust in it, you will need to repair the box as soon as possible

Oil change on a penny

Now, directly, instructions for changing the oil on a VAZ 2101 car.

Note! For better oil drainage, you need to warm up the car. To fully warm up, drive a few kilometers and only then start changing the oil.

Changing the engine oil

After the car has warmed up and all the tools and oil have been prepared, you can begin to change the engine oil. So:

  • First, drain the old oil. For this purpose, we need a 12mm hexagon. They need to unscrew the oil drain plug in the engine oil pan. Place the oil container under the hole and leave for about five minutes so that the oil drains well.
  • In the meantime, while the oil is draining, you can not waste time and replace the oil filter. You can, of course, unscrew it by hand if you have the strength - there are craftsmen like that, but we will consider the option with a puller.

Take a pre-prepared oil filter puller and put it on the filter itself. With a sharp movement of the hand, the filter breaks off and can then be freely unscrewed by hand. There are times when the filter is so stuck to the block that it cannot be unscrewed even with a puller. In this case, it is broken through, a knob is inserted and unscrewed in this way. Or you can show your imagination and invent your own method. So:

  • After this, install a new filter and tighten it with the same puller.
  • Next, you need to screw the drain plug back into the pan and start pouring oil.
  • Now you need to unscrew the filler plug, which is located in the cylinder head cover. We adjust the watering can to make it easier to get in and fill in the oil.
  • When adding oil, be sure to check the engine oil level on the dipstick.

Advice! Try to keep the volume of oil filled in the middle between the MIN and MAX marks on the dipstick. If there is not enough oil, the engine parts will be poorly lubricated and will fail faster. And if there is too much oil in the engine, this will create a high load on the engine seals and it will simply be covered in oil.

  • Once the required level is reached, tighten the plug.
  • Start the engine for the first time. Don't be alarmed that it will be a little noisy right away - this is normal. The car needs to pump oil into the system and after a few seconds the noise will subside.
  • A sign of a successful oil change is the absence of leaks in the block and drain plug, as well as a non-lit oil indicator on the instrument panel.

The oil change on the VAZ 2101, or rather in the engine, has been completed.

Changing the gearbox oil

Now let's go further through the car and consider the process of changing the oil in the variable gearbox. By the way, if you were unable to get a special syringe for changing the oil in the gearbox, then you can use a watering can with a long hose.

  • We take a 12mm hexagon and unscrew the drain plug, which is located in the bottom lid of the box.
  • If there is oil there, give it time to completely drain from the gearbox housing, and then tighten the plug back. Don't break the thread!
  • Now we will also need a key for 17. We use it to unscrew the gearbox filler plug.
  • Now we take a syringe or insert the end of the hose into the filler hole of the box, and take the watering can higher - for example, into the engine compartment.
  • We fill the syringe with oil and squeeze it into the box. In the case of a watering can, we simply pour oil into it.
  • Fill the oil with a syringe several times. It will require 1.4 liters.
  • The filler hole serves as the oil level. The conclusion is to fill the oil until it flows out of the hole. Then quickly screw in the plug.
  • Wipe off any remaining oil on the gearbox housing with a cloth and check for leaks. If there is a leak, it must be repaired.

This is how the oil in the VAZ 2101 gearbox is changed.

Changing the oil in the rear axle of a VAZ 2101

Here the essence of the process is practically no different from changing the oil in the gearbox:

  • Use a hexagon to unscrew the drain plug.
  • Drain the oil into a container.
  • We screw the plug back, having first cleared it of metal shavings.
  • Unscrew the filler plug.
  • Fill the oil with a syringe or a special homemade device. About 1.3 liters of oil will be required.
  • Add to the level and tighten the cap.
  • We wipe and check the tightness.

That's all.
