Changing the oil in a manual transmission Opel Astra step-by-step instructions with photos and videos Leave a comment

Hi all! In this article we will tell you how to change the oil in an Opel Astra manual transmission. This procedure is very simple, but if you are doing it for the first time, it is better to first read our manual. So, let's go.

Oil change intervals in manual transmission Opel Astra J (H)

The Opel Astra J or H is equipped with an F17 manual transmission, which is maintenance-free. In other words, the oil in this box does not change and is designed for the entire service life of the car. That's what the maintenance regulations say. And you can verify this by simply looking at the box itself, which doesn’t even have a drain plug. However, as experience shows, the oil in any gearbox ages and loses its properties over time. This leads to premature wear of manual transmission parts, which over time threatens either the replacement of the entire unit or its overhaul. To avoid all this, it is better to replace the manual transmission fluid, contrary to the instructions of the manufacturer and official dealers. We will describe how this is done below.

What do you need to change the oil in the Opel Astra H (J) manual transmission yourself?

First you need to decide on the place where the work will be done. A good option would be a garage equipped with a pit. Everything can be done on an overpass. Or, at worst, you can use a jack. The last option is not the most convenient, but it can be done if you are not afraid of difficulties. We did all the work in the pit.

Secondly, we will need devices for filling and draining oil from the box. To fill, we used a simple funnel and a thin hose, one end of which was inserted into the fill hole, and the funnel was simply inserted into the other. The result is a simple funnel extension. Everything is for convenience. To drain the waste we will need any convenient container. For example, a basin, a cut-off canister, a PET bottle of anti-freeze or water. Look in the garage. I think there will always be something.

Thirdly, we will need tools. This is a 10″ socket with a ratchet and a 19″ open-end wrench. You will also need a flathead screwdriver.

Fourthly, we will need new gearbox oil and a differential pan gasket. As for the oil, you will need 1.6 liters of transmission fluid for the GM 80W manual transmission, article number 1940182.

Do-it-yourself oil change in manual transmission Opel Astra

1. We drive the car into the pit, warm up the engine and turn it off. We get down under the car. If the car has engine protection installed, then we dismantle it. Then unscrew the 10 bolts securing the differential pan. Keep a waste container handy as oil will spill out.

2. When the oil has stopped flowing, remove the old gasket and install a new one in its place. We put all the bolts in place and tighten them.

3. Open the hood and disconnect the battery. Additionally, you will need to remove the battery pad.

4. We will pour oil into the box through the breather. But to do this, you will need to unscrew it. Take a 19″ wrench and unscrew the breather. We insert a hose into the hole formed, and a funnel into it and fill in approximately 1.5-1.6 liters of transmission oil.

5. Check the oil level using the control hole. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and find the control plug. We turn it inside out. At this moment, oil should flow. When the oil has stopped flowing, screw the control plug back into place.

6. Reinstall the breather and battery pad. We connect the battery.

That's all. Changing the oil in the manual transmission of the Opel Astra is considered complete. As a result, you will extend the life of the manual transmission, and also receive a pleasant bonus in the form of reduced operating noise. That's all, thanks for your attention.
