You quickly get used to good things, so having bought myself a new car without Bluetooth (in the past it was), I was immediately puzzled by the question of how to connect my smartphone to the audio system. In the process of solving it, I met interesting devices and today I will tell you what connection options are possible and how much they cost.

AUX cable, or solving the issue on a budget

The cheapest and fastest way to connect a smartphone to a car audio system is to buy an AUX cable at the nearest kiosk, communication store, computer store or any other suitable place, that is, a wire with 3.5 mm mini-jack plugs on both sides. That's exactly what I did when I got behind the wheel of a new car.

The cost of such cables starts from about 50 rubles and depends on the length and quality of workmanship. High-quality options are sold in the same DNS for 200-300 rubles.

Before purchasing, do not forget to make sure that your car has a port!

The transmitter is configured using the Roidmi application, it is available both on Google Play and the App Store.

I assumed that the sound transmitted over FM would not be of the best quality, but still hoped for the “magic of Xiaomi”. And it didn't happen. The sound is really muffled, noise appears at high volumes, and even on standard speakers the music does not sound very high quality. However, I note that at low and medium volumes, especially if you do not turn up the volume in your smartphone to maximum volume, but use the adjustment on the audio system, the quality is tolerable. On the forums they say that the previous model Roidmi 2S sounds better, and they advise buying it, but I didn’t check it, continuing my search for a more interesting solution.

Continuing to study the issue, I came across Bluetooth-AUX receivers. The principle of their operation is similar to transmitters, but instead of the FM frequency, a wired connection is used through the AUX connector.

I note that even on AliExpress there are not so many Bluetooth receivers designed for use in cars, and in Russian retail it is generally useless to look for them. But, despite this, I managed to find an almost perfect device - Kript Bluetooth Car Kit.

The device looks like this.

On the front of the gadget there is an LED that notifies you about the connection status, and a multifunction button with which you can answer a call, end a call, play music, pause it, switch tracks, or use voice dialing. Below the button is a microphone grid used for voice calls. Although the manufacturer claims high-quality noise reduction and crystal clear sound, my interlocutors often disagree with this.

Two wires come out of the gadget – USB for power supply and a 3.5 mm plug for connecting to the AUX port of the audio system. The kit includes a car power supply for the cigarette lighter, but I power the Kript Bluetooth Car Kit from the standard USB port for flash drives, there is enough power.

And now about the most important thing - the sound. There are no complaints about him. Music plays clear as if using a direct AUX connection. Owners of Android smartphones will be pleased with the support for the Apt-X codec, thanks to which audio transmission via Bluetooth will be virtually uncompressed. But even paired with an iPhone, everything is very good.

The receiver automatically turns on when power is applied, and also automatically connects to the last known device. Calls begin to be forwarded to the Kript Bluetooth Car Kit immediately, and to play music you need to press the multi-function button once, then the last song will start. Double clicking turns on the next track, triple clicking the previous one.

This device solved all my problems, so I can confidently recommend it for purchase.

Does it make sense to take an adapter with an internal battery?

Often, Bluetooth AUX adapters for cars are immediately connected to the network through the cigarette lighter socket. But is an internal battery needed in this case? It can be useful in two cases.

The first is to turn off the power at the outlet when the engine starts. Some vehicles are designed to automatically shut off all secondary systems to redirect as much battery power as possible to the starter. In addition, such shutdowns provide protection against unstable voltage when the engine starts, which prevents connected devices from breaking down. But at the same time, the connection with the smartphone will be interrupted, and it will take about a minute to restore it. If this does not suit you, it is better to take an adapter with a battery, even a small one.

The second case in which the battery can be used is that no one is stopping you from using the Bluetooth AUX audio adapter as a portable headset by connecting headphones to the jack. In this case, when choosing a device, you should be careful that it does not have a built-in plug, but is equipped with a male-to-male cable.

Using Hands Free

In order to call back on a mobile phone or receive a call, of course, you can use the Hands Free device, which also works using Bluetooth technology.

In this case, the driver may experience several inconveniences:

• when there is an incoming call, without being distracted by your cell phone, there is no way to find out who exactly is calling (of course, there are phones that can communicate information about the incoming subscriber by voice, but this function is not implemented in all mobile phones);
• Music playback will not be reduced, and if it is quite loud, the driver will definitely have to manually reduce it;
• Some Hands Free devices are not made of the highest quality, which can affect the response to a call, and if the fastening is poor, it may even fall when you move your head.

Special emulator for the head unit

There are devices such as CD changer emulators for radios. This device connects to a special connector (on the rear panel of the radio) and allows you to read music from SD cards, USB drives, or receive it from your phone via AUX or Bluetooth. And the radio “thinks” that it works with a regular CD changer. Everything connects beautifully and works, without any hassle. Suitable for old stock car radios.

As a rule, it is displayed somewhere in the glove compartment, or in another convenient place. The head unit identifies it as a CD changer.

Nothing complicated, just be careful when choosing this device. There are a lot of them on AliExpress. Be sure to find out whether a particular model will suit your specific vehicle. Via USB cable

The goal is to use the phone simply as a storage device. That is, there is music on the phone’s flash drive (or internal memory), we connect the phone to the radio via USB in data transfer mode, the radio scans the phone’s memory, finds audio files there and starts playing them. It’s as if we connected a regular flash drive.

Note! The capabilities of this connection method greatly depend on the functionality of the radio. For example, there are radios that support connecting Android devices via USB. In this case, a special application is installed on the phone. You can control playback from both your phone and the radio.

What is important:

• The car radio must have a USB input. Again, if this is a standard system, then the USB input is most likely located in the glove compartment or armrest.
• You probably won't be able to connect an iPhone this way. Because the iPhone cannot be used as a storage device. Unless your car has Apple CarPlay support. Or the radio tape recorder supports connecting an iPhone via cable (see specifications). This feature is available on some models from Alpine, BOSS, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer.
• Most often you need a USB to Micro USB cable. Or USB - USB Type-C (on new, top-end smartphones). But not every cable will work. The fact is that there are cables that were originally designed only for charging the phone. It is difficult to distinguish him. You just need a USB cable to transfer data. The one that comes with the phone should work.
• You can only listen to music that is saved in the phone’s memory (or on a flash drive). You won’t be able to listen to music via the Internet, various music services (Spotify, Deezer), apps, browser. The exception is cars with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay (I’ll talk about them at the end of the article). When connecting a smartphone via a USB cable, they will have enormous functionality. Including access to online music services.
• You can try connecting not only an Android smartphone, but also some kind of regular push-button phone. The main thing is that it is defined as a USB drive. If you connect it via USB to a computer and just transfer files, then you can most likely connect it in the car.
• The phone will charge immediately.

We connect the smartphone with the radio:

1. Connect one end of the USB cable to the phone and the other to the car radio.
2. The phone may ask in which mode to connect. Or manually select “File transfer” (data storage device) in the settings.
3. If the radio does not automatically switch to “USB” mode, then do it manually.
4. After reading the USB drive, audio files should appear and music from the phone will start playing.
5. Most often, you can control playback only on the car radio.

The method is working, you can use it. But as we have already found out, it has many disadvantages and various nuances.
