Instructions for replacing and initializing the original battery in a Mazda CX-5

What kind of battery is in Mazda CX5

The original Mazda CX-5 battery is installed during assembly. This storage element is necessary for the operation of the vehicle electronics. If the battery is damaged, it is impossible to start the car engine.

The storage element works by converting chemical energy into electrical current. This ensures that the components are supplied with DC current. Due to stabilized power, normal engine starting and operability of all electronic components are ensured. Structurally, it consists of two poles, the contacts of which are connected to the vehicle probes.

In a car, the following components are powered by the battery:

  • Motor.
  • Sound system.
  • Optics, screens and other parts.
  • Interior cooling and heating system.
  • Wipers.

For installation on a Japanese crossover, it is recommended to install an original galvanic element. This feature arises due to the built-in i-stop technology, which controls most of the drive's operation. It is advisable to undergo diagnostics at service centers before purchasing. Early versions of the car were produced with a Panasonic Q-85 battery. However, with the expansion of the model range, the number of possible galvanic cells has also increased.

To select the right battery, you will need to study the markings of the manufacturing plant, which are usually attached to the battery case. The most important parameters when choosing are the dimensions of the case, the maximum capacitance and the voltage for starting. The batteries of the Japanese crossover have the following characteristics:

  • Maximum capacity from 40 to 70 Ampere hours.
  • Output power – 12 Volts.
  • Electric current for starting 300-700A.

When choosing, you should pay attention to the polarity of the unit and the matching of the connected contacts. The dimensions of the battery are determined by the engine size. Since the Japanese crossover is available with an engine capacity of 2 and 2.2 liters, the dimensions will vary:

  • For a two-liter engine, you will need to choose a battery with dimensions of 202x230x172 millimeters.
  • The 2.2 engine starts from a battery with dimensions of 202x255x172 millimeters.

The cost of batteries with similar characteristics starts from 7,000 rubles.

Battery selection

Before installing a new battery, you need to correctly determine its characteristics. The original battery installed on the Mazda CX 5 is Panasonic Q-85. This is a classic Asian battery with very compact dimensions. They do not exceed 232x172x220 mm on three sides. The Q-85 battery series comes in several modifications, and the capacity is selected depending on the characteristics of the internal combustion engine. With less powerful motors, 65 A/h battery models are installed. There are also 70 A/h power supplies. The polarity is reversed, which corresponds to the characteristics of conventional European power supplies, but the housing is exclusively Asian. It features protruding terminals for easy connection.

Automaker Mazda uses a maintenance-free battery. Such batteries are more reliable and safer for the environment. They cannot extend their service life by adding distilled water, but it does not release toxic substances into the environment. Panasonic has very reliable batteries with a long service life, so the first owners of such cars were faced with the problem of the battery discharging and its subsequent replacement after 5-6 years of operation of the car.

The main criterion when choosing is full compliance in size and capacity of the original battery. This is important because there is a power control and saving system that simply will not allow you to use the car without initialization. Alternative power sources for the Mazda CX 5 are:

  • Alphaline EFB - format and version 90D23L;
  • Hankook EFB, 90D23L;
  • GS-Yuasa ER, format 95D23L.

The starting current of all batteries is in the range of 300-700 A and is selected depending on the characteristics of the internal combustion engine, as well as the operating conditions of the vehicle. The greater the starting current, the higher it is even at sub-zero temperatures.

Mazda cars are equipped with two battery sizes: 230 for cars with 2 liter engines and 255 mm in height for cars with 2.2 liter engines. The price of the issue depends on the manufacturer.

Battery replacement

The need to replace an outdated battery on a Mazda CX-5 occurs when the maximum power level drops below 25%. You can install the container using a loading fork or another method. A battery that has lost more than three quarters of its charge cannot be restored. The design of the car is simplified, so installation can be carried out even without experience.

The battery replacement procedure includes:

  1. You first need to disconnect the electric current sensor from the negative terminal of the old battery to turn off the power to the on-board computer.
  2. Disconnect all terminals.
  3. Then you need to remove the bar to fix it.

Then, you need to wait about 5-10 minutes until the PCM memory is cleared. Then install the new battery in the reverse order of removing the old one.

Mazda CX 5 battery features

The main indicator of the condition of the battery is the degree of charge. In Mazda's official documentation, this important parameter is designated as State Of Charge (SOC). Normal battery operating conditions are considered to be 80-100% SOC range. When using the car for long trips without frequent stops, the battery does not require special recharging: the energy used is automatically replenished using the generator.

But operating the Mazda CX 5 in city conditions leads to the fact that SOC is constantly decreasing - the battery is tasked with maintaining the on-board computer and numerous electrical equipment of the car in working order while working with the engine turned off, and the generator simply does not have time to make up for the losses in starting the car in a relatively short time driving periods.

This is especially facilitated by the i-stop system, which automatically stops the engine during long stops at traffic lights and in traffic jams. AP, after all, it is during such stops that the generator could accumulate energy. This problem is partially solved by a special smart charger, which is equipped with the Mazda CX 5.

Reference! Smart charging is a special “help” system for a car battery. Smart charging increases the voltage of the generator before stopping (monitors the force in the brake cylinders and engine speed), uses the kinetic energy of the car for charging, and also makes life easier for the car battery in other ways.

However, even this system cannot fully compensate for battery losses when driving in urban conditions using i-stop. On average, SOC loss is about 1.16% per day. It is easy to calculate that under such conditions the SOC value will drop to the operating minimum (80%) in 17-18 days. Indeed, the manual recommends charging the battery every 2-3 weeks.

If you operate the car in mixed (suburban-urban) mode, you can charge the battery on the Mazdacx 5 as needed. To independently determine the SOC level, you should measure the density of the electrolyte using a hydrometer. See the table for the relationship between electrolyte density, SOC and battery voltage.

Electrolyte density (kg/l)SOC (%)Battery voltage (V)
1.2710012.6
1.195012.2
1.1552512
1.1011.9

Important!
The density of the electrolyte, in addition to SOC, depends on a number of other factors, the most significant of which is the ambient air temperature. The summary table shows data for 22 Co. More detailed tables for different temperatures are written in the manual for the Mazda CX 5. If there is a need to charge the battery, this is easy to do at home.

Battery initialization

The action is carried out after connecting the battery and registration. The i-stop system requires a new battery to be initialized in order to operate. Removing the battery resets the settings, so some action is required. Initialization instructions:

  1. Start the engine and let it gain speed.
  2. Then, press and hold the i-stop button in this position for 10 seconds.
  3. On a vehicle with the hood closed, you will need to turn the steering wheel fully.
  4. Then stop the engine.

After which, it is possible to check the success of the process by pressing the key that corresponds to the control of the i-stop system in the computer. When the green indicator appears, the battery is working normally.

Battery operation in i-stop mode

The battery for the Mazda CX-5 is subjected to enormous loads due to the operation of the i-stop system. This is due to the constant switching off and starting of the engine while the car is stopped. Thus, the owner receives reduced fuel consumption due to increased battery wear.

The largest current consumption occurs at the moment of starting the power unit. Subsequently, the partial discharge of the battery is compensated by recharging from the generator. When driving on the highway, the crossover battery is charged in standard auto mode, and every stop within the city activates i-stop (while the generator does not work).

The effect of i-stop depends on the degree of charge. When SOC is below 65%, the system refuses to function.

How to register

For proper operation of the replaced battery, it must be registered in the system. Depending on the presence or absence of a screen, the action will differ. For owners of a vehicle without an LCD panel, the following is required:

  1. Turn off the engine.
  2. Switch to neutral gear.
  3. Press and do not release the brake pedal while performing the following steps;
  4. Then you will need to hold down the gas pedal until the indicator activates.
  5. Then press the accelerator three times until the indicator light goes off.
  6. Remove your foot from the brake pedal.

If you have a screen you will need:

  1. Close the salon.
  2. Switch the ignition mode to the on position without starting the engine.
  3. Remove all necessary messages from the screen.
  4. Switch to neutral gear.
  5. Next, press the brake pedal and hold it until the procedure is completed.
  6. Apply the accelerator for 5 seconds until the indicator lights up.
  7. Then press the gas pedal three times. The indicator light will go out.

After which you will need to carry out the initialization procedure.

Accumulator charging

Basic recommendations from the manufacturer for charging:

  1. Always use a 10A constant current charger.
  2. In the absence of such a charger, you will have to regulate the supply of electricity.
  3. When connecting, pay attention to the polarity.
  4. The charging duration is affected by the density of the substance that transmits current inside the battery.
  5. After fully charging, you need to leave the vehicle for several hours.

Charging optimization

To increase the charging time and reduce the rate of self-discharge, you will need to follow some recommendations:

  • Turn off side lights, radio and other devices that waste energy.
  • Do not allow the battery to be completely discharged frequently.
  • Do not leave the vehicle in the cold.
  • Do not allow the car to remain idle for long periods of time with the key in the lock.
  • Always lock your vehicle.

Charging system malfunctions

The appearance of a battery fault indication on the instrument panel may indicate:

  • Discharged battery.
  • Problems with the generator.
  • Signs of imminent failure of the galvanic cell.

To fix it, you need to either charge the car or carry out a comprehensive diagnostic at a service center and then replace the battery.

When is charging required, when is replacement required?

Charging the battery

The state of charge of the battery (SOC - State of charge) of the Japanese crossover Mazda CX 5 must be maintained at a level of at least 80%, which corresponds to an electrolyte density of 1.24 kg/l and a no-load voltage of 12.48 V. If the indicated values are lower, immediate charger.

It is advisable to replace the battery if the discharge has occurred to 35%, its voltage has dropped to 12.06 V, and the electrolyte density has reached 1.17 kg/l. With a deeper discharge, the battery will inevitably need to be replaced.

Find out the charging time of your battery

Charging at home

It is necessary to determine the battery charging time. To do this, you will again need the density of the electrolyte. At a density of 1.24 kg/l, the charging time will be 2 hours, at 1.17 kg/l – 3 hours.

The battery for Mazda CX 5 is charged with a direct current of 10 Amps. During the charging process, the current strength may change, so it is checked at least once an hour.

After the end of the allotted time for charging, the battery is disconnected from the power source and left for 12-24 hours (if this is not possible, at least 6). Then the density of the electrolyte in all (!) jars is measured again. The value should not differ from the corresponding SOC 100% by more than 0.02 kg/l. At room temperature (22C o), the density in each battery can should be at least 1.25 kg/l. Otherwise, it's time to think about replacing the battery.

In what cases is it necessary to change the original battery?

To begin with, it must be said that the need to replace this product in a car arises if the device does not cope with its primary functions. The device is not able to hold a charge, and after the next charge it discharges quite quickly.

The following signs may indicate a battery malfunction:

  1. First of all, this is a reduced charge. Diagnostics of this parameter is carried out using a tester.
  2. There is no fluid in the battery banks. Its absence may be due to the presence of cracks in the body, as well as boiling over. Boil-over is usually associated with the destruction of plates inside the structure; such a problem cannot be “treated.”
  3. Damage to the battery case. If cracks appear on the battery case, this can lead to leakage of the working fluid - electrolyte solution. If the water level is insufficient, the device will also not be able to perform its functions.
  4. Mechanical damage to terminals. Due to damage to the contacts, the device will not be able to properly power the electrical equipment of the car (the author of the video is the Battery Engineer).

What kind of program is this?

FORScan Lite works with EML327

In general, the specialists told me that it is not necessary to do this (initialization), that all this is complete bullshit. I remove the battery 2 times a year to recharge, while everything works) pah-pah

at the factory, out of nothing to do, the developers came up with all sorts of initializations and instructions, but the garage specialists are still smarter
