Easy tuning of the VAZ 2112 engine
VAZ 2112 engine modification is the most important, responsible and serious stage in tuning. From the factory, cars are equipped with standard engines that have average characteristics that meet the standard and requirements of the average consumer. To improve the performance of their favorite car, improve its dynamics and increase engine power in the VAZ 2112, owners resort to thorough engine tuning. Although the history of VAZ2112 cars is not yet rich at all, compared to other VAZ models that have become classics, this car model is becoming a favorite in the hands of folk craftsmen. Currently, there are many methods for modifying VAZ 2112 engines, more than half of which can be done independently, the rest require the help of specialists.
Tuning the VAZ 2112 engine
This is the most important, responsible and serious stage in tuning the VAZ 2112. All production cars are equipped with standard engines that have average characteristics that correspond to the average consumer.
In order to change the characteristics of your car, improve dynamics and increase power, you cannot do without thorough engine tuning. And although the history of the VAZ 2112 brand is not yet as rich as that of other VAZ models that have already become classics, this car has become a favorite among folk craftsmen.
There are several methods for refining and improving the engine that you can do yourself:
CEILING COVERING
The material from which the ceiling covering in the VAZ 2112 is made gets dirty very quickly. Over time, a dark spot appears on the ceiling, directly above the driver's seat. Similar spots appear above the heads of passengers (but, as a rule, later). Re-upholstering the ceiling covering on your own is not an easy task. But finding a reupholstery specialist is not easy, plus his services are not cheap. So VAZ 2112 owners do it simpler and simply paint the ceilings of their cars using universal paint in spray cans (to paint the ceiling of a “two-wheeler” you need 6 of them).
SEQUENCE OF OPERATION
Painting the ceiling directly in the salon is not an option. First, the coating must be dismantled.
- The ceiling covering in the VAZ 2112 is held on by 10 screws and 13 plastic latches located around the perimeter. To remove the screws, use a Phillips screwdriver. The latches are opened manually.

- The removed covering is removed from the passenger compartment through one of the rear doors (to do this, the covering will have to be slightly bent).
- The selected paint is sprayed from a can onto the ceiling covering (no preliminary primer is required - the universal paint is well absorbed into the material).
- After painting, the ceiling needs to be dried. It takes 6-8 days for the smell to completely disappear. Drying is carried out only in the open air.
The coating needs to be dried in the open air for 6–7 days. - The dried coating is installed back into the interior.
Increase in working volume.
This method is perhaps the most convenient and simple, and therefore widespread. This will increase engine torque without changing your driving style. This can be done in two ways: increasing the piston stroke and boring the cylinders.
- An increase in piston stroke is achieved by installing a new crankshaft with a large eccentricity and selecting connecting rods and pistons for it. Connecting rods, as a rule, are selected by weight and, mainly, lightweight options are installed. Because Since the piston is a key part in every engine, by replacing the piston group you can significantly increase efficiency and power. To top it off, a lightweight flywheel is installed. These operations will lead to a reduction in the load on the clutch and crankshaft, which will speed up acceleration and increase the dynamics of the car.
- Boring cylinders is a slightly simpler method. It is based on the fact that engines, as a rule, have a certain margin of cylinder wall thickness. From this we can conclude that the cylinders can be bored out, slightly increasing the volume by grinding down the walls. This will immediately increase engine power, because... Bored cylinders will begin to burn more fuel per unit time. Boring is carried out only on special equipment, as in the photo:
Lightweight valves
Installing lighter than standard valves ensures that the valve closes quickly with a spring. For this purpose, expensive light alloy valves are used. This method of modernization provides greater efficiency and normalization of valve timing at high speeds.
When tuning valves, you can install upgraded valves with a special shape of the disc profile.
Sometimes, instead of using light alloy valves, the valve plates are simply lightened. Less weight requires less camshaft effort to operate. Reduced weight rockers can be used in conjunction with lightweight valves. This will give even more advantages when using the machine at high speeds.
A similar effect can be achieved by installing more powerful valve springs. The valves also begin to close more quickly, but this solution has its drawback: stronger springs place additional stress on the camshaft, reducing its durability.
Increasing the compression ratio.
The essence of the concept of “compression ratio” is the ratio of the volume of the cylinders to the total volume of the combustion chamber. By increasing the compression ratio, you can significantly increase engine power and efficiency and at the same time slightly reduce fuel consumption
This is achieved by installing a new camshaft with different geometric parameters. The new camshaft will increase the volume of the combustion chamber without increasing the volume of the engine itself, which has a beneficial effect on its efficiency and power.
It is advisable to carry out this procedure in parallel with other engine modifications, for example, with the installation of turbocharging. It must be remembered that using an engine with a self-increased compression ratio will require the motorist to use high-quality fuel and engine oil.
Otherwise, the engine may begin to stall, and the temperature may begin to exceed the permissible limit. You can increase the compression ratio to 9.7 - 10.
Features of the camshaft on a Niva car
At first glance, the camshaft of a NIVA car is very similar to any other camshaft, however, there are some points by which you can easily determine that this part is specifically for the NIVA.
- Most camshafts have a hex key (usually 27) between the cams of the second cylinder. The camshafts that are manufactured for the NIVA car have two hexagons on their axis (between the cams of the second and third cylinders). Visually, this is the main distinguishing feature of this part.
- The next differentiating factor is the distance between the base and the top of the cam. If you need to make sure that the part is specifically for NIVA, and the presence of a second hexagon does not guarantee the authenticity of the product, pick up a caliper and start measuring. The basic camshaft cam size is the same in most cases and is 30 millimeters. But the distance from the base to the top of the Niva is 37 millimeters. Measuring any other camshaft, the distance will be no more than 36.3 millimeters.
If both of these points are met, rest assured that the spare part is genuine and you can begin installing the camshaft on your Niva.
Chip tuning
This is perhaps the most modern method. It is efficient and relatively simple. Its essence lies in reconfiguring the engine control unit, due to which it is possible to improve some of its characteristics without the risk of subsequent repairs.
During chip tuning, the standard software is replaced with sports software, developed, for example, for the VAZ 2112 16 valve engine. First, the controller program is read from the engine control unit via sensors. This program is then modified taking into account engine reserves and characteristics.
Special companies and car services specialize in these works and have the necessary software and human resources, because This requires experience and appropriate engineering skills.
Finally, the reconfigured controller program is written to the vehicle's control unit. The advantages of this tuning are accessibility and relative simplicity. It also excludes the situation when repair of the VAZ 2112 engine is required, because its mechanical part is not affected.
Perhaps the only drawback of this type of tuning is a slight decrease in the environmental friendliness of the exhaust.
Turbocharging installation
This is the most common and effective type of tuning. The power characteristics of a car depend fundamentally on the amount of air and fuel, the mixture of which is ignited in the cylinder. In order to increase engine power, you need to supply more fuel to the cylinders.
But to increase the volume of fuel, you will definitely need to increase the volume of air, which, in fact, is what the turbine is intended for. The exhaust gases pass through the turbine impeller, rotating it, and it also drives the compressor. The compressor pumps air into the cylinders.
The air is forced under pressure, therefore, compared to naturally aspirated engines, more air is supplied. It is the increase in the volume of air pumped into the cylinders that leads to an increase in the amount of fuel burned, which significantly increases engine power.
But it is worth remembering that installing a turbine will most likely require modifications to the cooling system. Video with examples of installing turbocharging on another car of the VAZ family - VAZ 1209:
An exhaust manifold
This system is designed to improve the release of exhaust gases. People call this system “spider”, and there can be mainly two options: “4-1”, “4-2-1”.
Three types of collectors
It is advisable to install the exhaust system after working with the gas distribution mechanism, pistons, “nulevik” or chip tuning. Single-purpose installation of this system will not bring the desired results.
Installation of "nulevik"
This is what is commonly called an air filter with low resistance. It is designed to reduce resistance in the intake system and thereby increase the throughput of the filter, thereby achieving a slight increase in power. These filters differ from standard filters in their high throughput.
Tuning a VAZ 2112 engine requires a professional approach and care during all operations. Not every motorist understands the intricacies of engine operation, so it is advisable to entrust your car to experienced professionals. This will save you from inevitable mistakes during tuning and save a lot of time.
Installation of a zero resistance filter
A zero-resistance filter, or simply “zero filter,” is mounted instead of the air filter and its housing. It is designed to reduce the resistance of incoming air into the system. Large filter throughput allows you to increase engine power by a couple of percent. Remember that the correct choice of filter and impregnation for it is the key to proper engine operation.
This tuning is one of the most affordable.
Channels and valves
- The exhaust and inlet channels are supposed to be ground , increasing the diameter at the inlet, and not changing the diameter at the outlet. We remove all irregularities and various joints that can in any way slow down the flow.
- Valves - it is better to use special lightweight or increased diameter ones. It is also expected to use the stiffest or sportiest springs, as well as lightweight valve plates.
