Today we’ll talk about how to replace a VAZ-2112 thermostat. All important topics will be covered in this article.
Often we have to fix your car at the most inconvenient time and you don’t have the opportunity to visit a car repair company. The thermostat may need to be replaced at any time. This can happen when the system temperature is unstable, either overheating or insufficient heating. At this point, there is no need to completely drain the coolant.
The main task of the thermostat is to control the heating of the 16-valve engine made in the VAZ-2112 car. Its system contains a special valve where a special liquid is stored. When the engine starts, the apparatus opens and the substance flows into a huge circle.
If this substance does not flow into a huge circle, then the car may begin to overheat and may catch fire. To avoid this, you must ensure that the thermostat is working properly. The thermostat should be replaced and repaired when the engine is quiet and cold.
A little about the thermostat?
Content
The thermostat is a mandatory engine device in its self-cooling system. Its main purpose will be to cool the system while it is running.
For example, when starting a car “cold”, that is, when heated from 70 to 95 degrees, a huge circle starts up, and the liquid goes into the radiator and the process of self-cooling of the system begins to occur more strongly, compared to a small circle.
The VAZ-2112 thermostat for 16 valves consists of the following components:
- Shell.
- Internal compartment.
- Two pipes with valves.
- Core.
- Thermocouple. Usually it is a mixture of granulated wax, a mixture of copper, graphite and aluminum in a certain proportion.
- Valves.
How to check the health of the thermostat
To check the serviceability of the VAZ-2112 16-valve thermostat, do the following:
Otherwise, that is, if the temperature of the pipe is not warm, the thermostat will need to be replaced immediately.
Under normal home conditions, you can check the part for serviceability in another way. To do this, prepare a container with liquid in which to place the thermostat. The vessel is heated on a gas burner, they look at the temperature indicators and control at what moment the part begins to open.
It should be noted that in the operating position, a serviceable element that controls engine heating should open at a temperature of 88 degrees. As soon as the temperature in the engine rises to this level, the lid opens and the coolant begins to move in a large circle. Thanks to this, the VAZ-2112 car does not overheat, it will continue to function normally at any speed.
Replacing it with a new part will help restore proper operation of the engine and prevent it from overheating.
Checking the thermostat VAZ-2112 16 valves
To diagnose the device without removing it, it is necessary to heat the system to normal temperature.
Next, find the lowest pipe coming from the device and touch it. At first it should be warm or slightly cold, but gradually it should heat up. If the lower pipe does not heat up and is in a cold state, and the engine heats up very quickly. Consequently, the thermostat is broken and needs to be replaced with a new one. There are also 5 main signs of failure of the VAZ-2112 thermostat:
- The car engine has a hard time reaching normal temperature.
- The system heats up too quickly.
- The system thermometer boom falls at a speed less than normal, and also rises after stopping.
- After the car has been running for a long time, the lower pipe remains warm, this indicates a breakdown of the thermostat and needs to be replaced.
- Also, if the pipe is cold and the engine temperature is close to boiling over a long period, then the thermostat is stuck in the closed position.
What will be useful for us to change the broken thermostat of the VAZ-2112:
- Phillips screwdriver.
- Hex key 5.
- Basin for draining liquid.
- Special substance 2 liters.
- New thermostat.
A good life hack: for easier replacement, remove the battery. If the device is broken, then only the thermal element is replaced.
Verification methods
There are several ways to check the VAZ 21102 thermostat, in particular:
check without removal;
checking a removed thermostat
To check without dismantling, start the engine and wait until it reaches operating temperature. Next, grab the lower pipe with your hand (it comes from the thermostat). At first, the pipe should be warm, and after a few minutes it should gain temperature. If the lower pipe is cold and the coolant temperature approaches 100-110 degrees, then the thermostat is not working and needs to be replaced.
There is also a simple and working way to check the thermostat removed from the engine. Heat the water to 80 degrees and lower the thermostat into it. Next, heat the water another 10 degrees and watch the thermostat; the valve stem should gradually come out.
It is not advisable to repair the VAZ 2112 thermostat due to the low cost of a new spare part.
The procedure for replacing and repairing the VAZ-2112 thermostat
- First you need to drain the coolant, otherwise you will not be able to disconnect the device, since there will be a substance in the system.
- We remove the air filter shell, as it will subsequently interfere with the next work.
- After we have completed the top two points, we proceed to replacing the thermostat. To begin, take a screwdriver or wrench in relation to the fastening to the clamp. We unscrew the clamps on the two lines of the hose and loosen them. Be sure to remove the device only when the engine is completely turned off and cooled down.
- Next, unscrew the 3 bolts with a hexagon that are attached to the thermostat covers.
- We take out the device from the air filter. Don't forget to notice the rubber band in the device. If it is intact enough, then it can be used in a new device. Also, if it is cracked or torn, then it needs to be replaced.
- Reinstalling the thermostat is carried out in the reverse order. Also pay attention to the condition of the rubber O-ring in the socket groove. If it is severely deformed, has lost elasticity or is torn, replace it.
- Fill the device with coolant, pouring it into the expanded tank completely to the top of the fastening belt. Tighten the plug, start the engine, check for coolant leaks using the thermostat connections and warm up the engine to a certain temperature while idling. This is done in order to remove various air pockets from the engine.
How to replace a thermostat yourself
Replacing a faulty thermostat in a VAZ-2112 with 16 valves is a fairly simple matter, so even minor skills in car repair will help the car enthusiast to perform this operation on his own.
The part is replaced in stages: If, upon inspection of the cover, any defects are revealed in the sealing ring, for example, cracks or deformation, this will indicate that the ring has also become unusable and needs to be replaced.
All car parts should be assembled in the reverse order that was used during disassembly.
The information described indicates that replacing a faulty VAZ-2112 16-valve thermostat is an easy operation, and if you approach the event responsibly and carry out the process step by step, then everyone will be able to correctly replace the faulty part on their car.
Removing and correctly installing the thermostat on a carburetor engine
1. Remove the plug from the expansion tank and unscrew the drain plug at the bottom of the radiator. Drain the liquid from there and screw the drain plug back on.
2. Disconnect the three hoses from the thermostat housing, having first loosened it. 3. Next, you will need to loosen the clamp and remove the device along with the hose. 4. After all the above steps, warm the water to 80 degrees and lower the thermostat into it. Just as with an engine with a fuel injection system, heat the water together with the thermostat, while constantly stirring it to 87–90 degrees. 5. At this temperature, the main thermostat valve will begin to open. If this opening does not occur, you will need to replace it. Installation occurs in the exact reverse order of removal.

To replace thermostats on an 8-valve VAZ-2112 engine (injector), proceed as follows:
How to change the thermostat on a VAZ-2112 with an injection 16-valve engine?
When replacing a faulty device with a 2112 with a 16-valve engine, the required tool and algorithm of actions remain virtually unchanged:
Installation
On the VAZ 2112 you can easily install a thermostat from the injection VAZ 2111. The advantages of such an upgrade:
What you need for installation
Installation algorithm
Note. When removing the distributor, we act carefully and mark its position relative to the body of the additional units. Otherwise, the ignition may be disrupted, which will lead to difficulties in starting the engine.
Attention! The new thermostat will be shorter than the old one. The outlets and the pipe itself will not match and you will have to do this: completely dismantle the pipe and install a new one.
In addition, you will need to purchase a new corner pipe, a heater supply hose and one of the heater hoses located on the passenger compartment side.
Note. If nothing drips or flows anywhere, then everything went well.
The instructions for replacing the thermostat with your own hands proposed above are not the only ones. You can find others on the Internet where the description is more thorough. In addition, if something is not entirely clear, you can use photos and video aids, where everything is clearly indicated and shown. The price of a new thermostat is not high, and replacing it yourself does not lead to unnecessary expenses. Therefore, you need to arm yourself with patience and everything will definitely work out.

We install a thermostat from another model
There is another way to improve the operation of the thermostat; to achieve efficiency, you should use a part from a different model. If selected correctly, no additional modifications will be required, and at the same time, the system will work correctly and without failures. The most important thing here is not to make a mistake when choosing a part. The best option would be to install a thermostat from Lada Granta; it is almost identical in mounting, but is more efficient. Therefore, many drivers limit themselves to installing it.
Where is the thermostat located
In order to check the operation of the thermostat on a car, you first need to find it. That is, you need to know exactly where this part is located. This is quite easy to do.
First of all, in the engine compartment you should find the thickest pipe - the upper radiator hose, which goes from the radiator (it is always in front of the engine) to the engine. This pipe will inevitably be attached at its second end to the thermostat, or rather, to its body. This scheme is used on most domestic cars and on many foreign-made cars.
conclusions
The operating temperature of the 16-valve VAZ-2112 engine is 87-103 degrees Celsius.
If this indicator increases, the engine may boil, which in turn can lead to serious negative consequences, such as bending of the cylinder head or major engine overhaul. It is worth carefully monitoring the condition of the components and parts of the cooling system, because they ensure normal cooling and operation of the power unit.
The thermostat is an important component in the engine cooling system of any car. The stability of cooling and the performance of the engine itself depend on its operation. The article describes the purpose of this part, how to check its performance, replacing the thermostat on a VAZ-2112 with a 16-valve engine, the best original components and their factory part numbers.
Installation of a modified vehicle
On a VAZ 2110 you can easily install a more advanced thermostat from Granta 2190. But you should still know a little about the design of the heating/cooling system in Granta. Its scheme can be easily implemented on the “ten”.
- Original TS Grants 2190 from BEHR;
- The lower radiator hose is from Granta, but the upper one 21214 will also work, or simply matched to size;
- Tee from VAZ 2110 for the cooling system;
- The studs are 8 mm in length - like from the camshaft bed;
- Straight long stove pipe from the “ten”;
- Gasket for thermostat.
We act according to this plan:
- We change the lower radiator pipe to the one from Granta (or similar). You can leave the original one, but connect it to a suitable diameter at a right angle using a piece of pipe. However, remember - the more connections, the more opportunities for leaks;
- We connect the expansion tank pipe through a VAZ 2110 tee: one end goes to the drain from the heater radiator, the other end goes to the supply pipe;
- Drain the coolant;
- We change the studs to longer ones and install the Granta thermostat;
- We twist the temperature sensor.

Which thermostat should you choose?
So, it has already been mentioned that there are collapsible and non-dismountable thermostats. But this is not the only nuance by which you can choose these details. There is also a division according to the number of holes. All stock thermostats have 5 holes, and tuning ones have 6 holes. Before you start making your choice, you should understand the difference between them.
Thermostats with 6 holes allow you to get better cooling, and the stove also works more efficiently with them. But in winter, the engine will take longer to warm up.
Reasons why a thermostat may fail
The thermostat is responsible for maintaining the optimal temperature of the car engine.
An experienced driver can determine a malfunction of the VAZ-2110 thermostat for indirect reasons. They can be divided into the following points:
- Thermostat takes too long to heat up . This can happen due to unstable operation of the engine, which produces strong vibration. This can damage the valve of the device, causing antifreeze to get inside the thermostat. As a result, the device will work more slowly.
- The valve may also open earlier than expected . As a rule, this is the result of antifreeze getting into the element responsible for coolant temperature.
- The thermostat may open with a delay . Most often, this occurs due to leakage of the filler, which is responsible for the valve opening temperature.
- The thermostat works correctly, but the engine constantly overheats . This may occur due to the coolant moving only in a small circle. The engine may also overheat due to cracks in the pipes or radiator.
- Mechanical damage to the thermostat valve can also prevent it from working correctly.
- Manufacturing defects . Unfortunately, domestically produced spare parts are often produced with factory defects, which can lead to a whole series of unnecessary work, since after changing the thermostat, the car owner will look for the cause of the breakdown anywhere, but not in it.
- Destruction of the rubber seal. If oil gets into the coolant, it can quickly render all rubber parts and pipes that were in contact with the oil unusable.
Oil causes seals to break down.
How to solve problems on the VAZ-2110?
Most thermostat problems can be resolved on your own. As a rule, VAZ-2110 owners do exactly this.
It happens that, despite the normal operation of the thermostat, the temperature of the coolant in the engine is constantly above normal. If you are sure that the thermostat is working properly and the cooling radiator is new, clean and undamaged, then you should replace the device with another one.
Loosen the radiator outlet hose clamps.
Loosen the clamps of the pump pipe supply hose.
Remove thermostat.
The new thermostat should open at a higher coolant temperature.
If the device opens late, then you need to check the entire system for the presence of coolant in it. It happens that the tank is full, and air pockets in the system interfere with the full circulation of antifreeze.

Thermostat valve malfunction
The thermostat may open early due to high pressure in the cooling system. Excessive pressure is very dangerous, it can lead to rupture of pipes or the radiator in the best case, and seizure of the engine in the worst case .
The thermostat valve may open early in the following cases:
- Increased engine speed.
- Failure of the thermostat spring.
The spring may cause the valve to operate early.
- Problems in the cooling system.
This last point is extremely broad. The reason may be either an insufficient amount of antifreeze in the system or a failure of the radiator, pipes, and so on.
Long warm-up
VAZ-2110 drivers often encounter the problem of the engine warming up for too long. This may be due to the following reasons:
- The thermostat valve does not close completely.
The reason for the engine taking a long time to warm up is a stuck valve.
- The valve disc is damaged.
- The thermostat is installed incorrectly or has changed its position as a result of manipulations under the hood.
The engine can heat up even if the thermostat is in full working order, so you should not focus on it.

The cylinder head gasket for engine 21124 (pictured above) is non-shrinkable, made of non-asbestos material with metal cylinder seal edgings produced by Fritex, Yaroslavl, or VATI, Volzhsky. The 21126 motor has a Federal Mogul gasket - iron, two-layer with spring ridges to seal the gas connections and the lubrication system channel. Not interchangeable with 21124. On the 11194 engine there is a similar iron gasket, only with the smallest diameter of the holes for the cylinders - 76.5 mm. (*124*)
Thanks to the latest gasket, the deformation of the cylinder walls is significantly reduced. Combined with piston rings of the latest design (less height and tangential force), reducing the mass of the connecting rod and piston set and increasing the length of the connecting rod, this significantly reduced friction losses, oil consumption due to waste and the breakthrough of gases from the combustion chamber into the crankcase. Development of tightening of cylinder head bolts: 20 N.m + 90° + 90°.(*124*)
The timing drive on the 21124 engine consists (without taking into account the cooling water pump pulley) of the crankshaft drive toothed pulley, two driven pulleys of the intake and exhaust camshafts, tension and support rollers and, of course, a toothed belt. Its tension is controlled with a frequency meter. Axial fixation of the belt - flanges on rollers. The belt life is not very long - 45 thousand km, but if it breaks, the valves do not meet the pistons. The belt tooth profile is parabolic.(*124*)
On the 21124 engine, the belt is 25.4 mm wide with 136 teeth. Its designation is 136–25.4. The tooth profile is parabolic. Modern models 11194 and 21126 received an imported Gates belt with 137 semicircular teeth. Width 22 mm, designation 76137 x 22 mm.(*124*)
In 11194 and 21126, the timing drive is monotonous, but good from 21124. The tension roller with a spring mechanism is automatic (arrow). To tension the belt, it is necessary, by turning the roller with a wrench, to align the mark on the inner race of the roller with the middle of the pointer on its outer race and tighten the roller with a bolt to the cylinder head. The service life of the toothed belt is 200 thousand km, but its replacement, together with the tension and support rollers, is provided at a mileage of 180 thousand km, when the cooling water pump also needs to be replaced. This belt life was achieved thanks to a new tension mechanism that smoothes out pulsating overloads, and also because its manufacturer, Gates (Germany), used a rubber compound designed for a wide temperature range.(*124*)
Crankshaft timing pulley 21124 with a parabolic tooth shape (pictured on the left). 11194 and 21126 have a different pulley - with a semicircular tooth shape, a shoulder on the rear wall and complete with a washer for axial fixation of the timing belt. Pulleys are not interchangeable.(*124*)
Cooling water pumps differ in their drive pulleys and are therefore not interchangeable. 21124 has a parabolic tooth profile and a pulley width of 33 mm, 11194 and 21126 have a pulley width of 30 mm, a semicircular tooth profile, and there is a distinctive mark - the letter O in a circle (arrow). (*124*)
For engines 21124 and 21126, the thermostats are interchangeable (pictured on the left). In auto parts stores, in addition to the assembly, you can purchase its cover with a heat-sensitive element separately. But keep in mind that thermostats are manufactured by several factories and each one has its own internals - there may be a “mismatch” of parts. For motor 11194, the thermostat is more compact (pictured on the right). The engine control system cooling water temperature sensor (arrows) is the same for all engines.(*124*)
How to distinguish the intake camshaft pulley from the exhaust camshaft pulley?(*124*)
The intake has a stamped phase sensor shutter welded on its back side - these are all the lower pulleys in the photo. In addition to this, each engine has its own intake and exhaust pulleys, in order to distinguish them, in addition to the installation marks there are marks in the form of circles. Let's start with the intake ones: 21124 has one circle near the hub, 21126 has one circle to the left of the installation mark near the teeth, 11194 has two circles near the hub. Exhaust pulleys are marked using a similar method. 21124 has one circle near the hub, 21126 has two circles to the left and right of the alignment mark near the teeth, 11194 has four circles near the hub. The marks are shown by arrows. Motor pulleys 21124 have a parabolic tooth shape, and 11194 and 21126 have a semicircular tooth shape.(*124*)
Motor 21124 has sensors for cooling water temperature (TM-106) and oil pressure (2108–3829) - with an old connector (they are on the left in the photo). The proper engine sensors 11194 and 21126 received the most reliable connector. On the right in the photo is the cooling water temperature sensor 27.3828 and oil pressure 1118–3929.(*124*)
The generator drive belt for 11194 is 6RK-882, the same belt on the 8-valve version 1.6 l (21114) for Kalina. For engines 21124 and 21126 - 6RK-742, for 21126 with hydraulic booster - 6RK-1115 (Priora). Let us remind you that on 1.5-liter engines of VAZ-2113, 2114, 2115 cars the belt is 6RK-698. In the marking of Russian-made belts (pictured), the letter P is missing.(*124*)
The fuel rails of all 3 engines are interchangeable, although the injectors can be made by Bosch - 0 280 158 022 (pictured above) or Siemens - 20735.(*124*)
To supply electricity to consumers and charge the battery, engine 11194 is equipped with a generator 1119–3701010 with an output current of up to 85 A (pictured on the left), and on 21124 and 21126 a generator 2112–3701010 with an output current of up to 80 A is installed. They are not interchangeable, attachment points located in various places. With all this, in adjusting the belt tension on 11194, an additional roller assembled with a bracket was used. On engines 21124 and 21126 there is no such roller; the belt tension is adjusted by shifting the generator itself and inspected with a frequency meter. (*124*)
The catalytic converter is an integral part of the exhaust system. Today it is combined with the exhaust pipe and is called the “catcollector”. The pipes of the collector part are made of stainless steel. Before and after the neutralizer, threaded bushings are welded into the catalytic collector body for installing oxygen sensors. The catcollector for engines 11194 and 21126 is in the photo above. Thanks to the neutralizer with an oval cross-section, it is more compact than the analogue for the 21124 engine. In addition to the Russian supplier of catalytic converters for 1.6 liter engines, there is a foreign one - the Delphi office. The difference is the metal collector part.(*124*)
16-valve engines with distributed fuel injection VAZ-11194, VAZ-21124 and VAZ-21126 are designed for front-wheel drive VAZ cars. Engine 21124 with a displacement of 1.6 liters is well known to owners of cars of the “tenth family”: VAZ-21104, VAZ-21114 and VAZ-21124. It was replaced by the 21126 engine of the same working size, but with lightweight connecting rods, pistons, piston pins and rings. Destination: Priora. The same individuality is found in the 11194 engine with a displacement of 1.4 liters, created for Kalina. (*124*) Source: www.zr.ru
Possible faults
The thermostat is a fairly simple and reliable part, but it has its own service life. The main malfunctions of the thermostat on the VAZ-2112 include:
- Valve jamming in seat. Occurs due to exposure to scale or contamination. This problem often occurs in cars whose engines have not been started for a long time.
- Incomplete valve closure. Occurs due to loss of elasticity of the return spring or dirt getting under the valve seat.
A faulty unit causes the following malfunctions:
- The engine overheats at idle speed. The reason for the valve being stuck in the seat. Even when driving at high speed, the fluid does not cool.
- The engine takes a very long time to heat up. The reason is the lack of contact between the valve and the seat. Some of the antifreeze gets into the engine.
Any of these faults requires a timely check of the part for serviceability.
