The body of the VAZ-2170 Lada Priora car is a four-door sedan type, with a supporting structure, consisting of a frame and hinged units (Figure 11.1).

Unfortunately, there is no height adjustment of the chair: the designers only promise to do so.

In the instrument cluster (it is unified with cars of the Kalina/Grant family) a coolant temperature indicator has appeared (the numbers are called up on the display using the on-board computer's rocker key), and in the main place of the center console there is a new “radio device”: a multimedia head unit with an CB/VHF tuner , mp3 player and bluetooth interface.

This “music” hit the production line quite recently (the supplier is the Moscow company Itelma), and if you see it in the list of optional equipment, then order it with confidence. The device sounds good and pleases with its simple interface, large buttons and lack of multimedia frills.

By changing the “geometry” of the chassis and installing 15-inch wheels, the Cross became 23 millimeters higher than the regular Kalina station wagon. Stiffer anti-roll bars, different springs, plus shock absorbers of increased length: they are recalibrated according to the gas boost pressure and have “their own” jets.

In this work, the Togliatti residents were assisted by engineers from the Skopin Automotive Aggregate Plant (it produces shock absorbers) and the German company Zahnradfabrik (ZF), a supplier of hydraulic components. The price to pay for the accuracy of reactions and energy consumption was a decrease in the rebound stroke and a slight increase in the turning radius.

Reliability? VAZ testers claim that the Cross’s suspension can withstand 20 thousand kilometers on smooth cobblestones.

The aerodynamic drag coefficient of the raised station wagon increased by two hundredths (0.42 versus 0.4 for the regular Kalina), and the maximum speed dropped by 3 km/h.

And Cross drives like a cross! It doesn’t notice small defects in the old asphalt, but passes through holes and dips with a quiet slap. Even when the broken steppe asphalt turned into a dump of construction waste and I had to “beat” right through, I didn’t have the feeling that I was “killing” the car.

There were no suspension breakdowns, nor any jerks on the steering wheel. Even where there is no hard surface at all, Cross does not look helpless. You can, for example, safely drive off the road along steep grassy slopes. Ground clearance allows you to confidently move along a broken rut, and the “geometry” of the body allows you to confidently get out of it.

To do this, just rock the car with the steering wheel, release the gas and wait a second: the tires stick and Cross jumps onto the ridges. The main thing is not to push straight across the track, but to drive “adaptively”, choosing a trajectory and correctly dosing traction. I can only compare the sensations with driving a Citroen Berlingo Trek, modified by Dangel, the chassis of which has similar characteristics.

I rate the ride comfort as a solid “four”; at least I didn’t clank my teeth on bumps even once. It's worse on the back seat because it shakes more. The load on the spine could be removed by slightly increasing the angle of the backrest, but there is no such option on the Cross.

It is interesting that the Lada Kalina Cross became the first VAZ car whose suspension was tuned for specific tires - Pirelli Cinturato P1 with dimensions 195/55 R15 - which are produced by the Russian holding Amtel specifically for AvtoVAZ’s “cross” program.

I won’t say anything new about the 87-horsepower eight-valve VAZ engine. It's still lazy in rev-up, but good in the low to mid rev range. The “shortened” main gear (3.9 versus 3.7 on the regular Kalina) is the right decision: in the first two gears the Cross pulls in quite briskly, without forcing you to “tighten” the engine and burn out the clutch.

At first, the “cross” Kalinas will be equipped with only such power units, and at the beginning of next year, VAZ promises a 16-valve modification (106 hp) and an automatic transmission. Well, or “robot” - the final decision is up to marketers.

And here’s what’s remarkable: the engine on the Cross is almost the only source of noise, because there are almost no “bugs” and “crickets” left! Damping pads in the arches of the rear wings, like on Datsun cars, noticeably reduce road noise (in the front arches, alas, they are not there, and the stones drum louder).

A countless number of soundproofing patches were stuck on the body of the Cross, a complete revision of the intra-panel wiring was carried out, the mounting locations for attaching the harnesses to the body were modified, and the problem of rattling of slightly open windows in the rear doors on the current Kalinas and Grants was promised to be solved with the help of a new three-lobe seal. But.

The windows on our car were still rattling. To further dampen vibrations, two additional power brackets are about to appear on the Cross. One for the power unit, and the second for the steering mechanism, which will work in tandem with a gearless electric power steering made in Kaluga.

But there are no complaints about the AvtoVAZ marketing department: the factory workers were able to keep the price of the car within the promised limits. Kalina Cross with a driver's airbag, ABS, front electric windows, audio system, air conditioning, alloy wheels and an eight-valve engine costs 409 thousand rubles.

This year the plant plans to produce 1,600 Lada Kalina Cross cars, the plan for next year is at least 15 thousand cars. And I’ll tell the readers of Autoreview a little secret.
