Engine cooling system

The coolant level should be between the MIN and MAX marks marked on the body of the expansion tank, which is made of translucent material that allows you to visually monitor the liquid level. During vehicle operation, the coolant level in the expansion tank may decrease. Coolant levels that are too low can cause engine damage.
Do not remove the cap from the expansion tank when the engine is hot and the radiator is hot. This may cause serious burns. Make sure the engine is cool before opening the cover.
After filling the coolant, the plug must be tightly screwed on, since the system is under pressure when the engine is running and warm.
The need to frequently add coolant may indicate a malfunction of the engine cooling system. Contact an official LADA dealer to check the cooling system.
Adding tap water to the cooling system may damage the cooling system. The use of tap water and antifreezes based on methanol and other alcohols in the cooling system is not allowed.

Robotic gearbox in xRay
For strategic reasons, AvtoVAZ decided to replace the conventional automatic transmission with a robotic gearbox. The Lada Xray automated transmission is based on the serial manual transmission MKPP-2180. The development of the machine was carried out jointly with the German company ZF. 4. Set the selector lever to position N (“neutral”). We lower the brake pedal, but the car should not start moving.
5. Check the operation of the Lada Xray gearbox in motion. To do this, turn on mode A (forward movement in automatic mode) and slowly press the gas pedal. In this case, the clutch should engage smoothly. We move first with acceleration and then with deceleration, making sure that the clutch is engaged smoothly, that gear shifts smoothly (both up and down), and that there is no crunching, knocking or other extraneous sounds from the gearbox.
6. Turn on M mode and repeat the test, shifting gears manually. To do this, move the selector lever first towards the “+” symbol and then “─”. The box should work smoothly, changing gears in the selected direction.
7. Stop the car and move the selector lever to position R. After releasing the brake pedal, the car should start moving backwards.
- Jerking and rattling

8. When driving in third or fourth gear, sharply press the gas pedal. If the speed increases quickly and the car accelerates sluggishly, the clutch slips.

Regulations for changing oil in manual transmission
According to the recommendations of experienced car owners and specialists, the oil in the Lada X-Ray manual transmission must be changed every 50-100 thousand km. However, the first stage of eliminating this technical ailment is to replace the oil seals, which can prevent even further weakening of the seal and water from entering through the oil seals directly into the oil, which can cause the development of corrosion processes. The second stage requires washing and cleaning the manual transmission, and the third involves filling in new oil. After all, just adding new oil (without a complete change) is not enough, otherwise there may be even more mud deposits.
- Stiff gear shifts are caused by old oil. This phenomenon is often found in domestic cars, and is also true for very old foreign cars. The problem can be resolved by simply changing the oil.
- The use of cheap, incompatible and low-quality oil leads to failure of the manual transmission mechanisms.
- Increased dust and high ambient temperatures accelerate the wear of manual transmission components and also lead to accelerated aging of the oil. Therefore, it must be changed twice as often.
- In case of manual transmission repair, it is recommended to change the oil at the same time, so that later this procedure does not have to be performed separately.
Leaks and problems
Oil burning on an X-Ray car with a 1.8 liter engine, marked 21179, is a common problem. The manufacturer AVTOVAZ knows about this, but does not admit that this is a problem, but states that it is a design feature.

Lada Xray - automatic transmission or AMT?
The solution to this issue was extremely important for the company, because the domestic manufacturer intended to create a modern, technologically advanced and relatively inexpensive car. It was for budgetary reasons that the hatchback option with a classic 5-speed automatic transmission was discarded, as this would have significantly affected the price of the Lada X-Ray. Of course, there was the option of equipping it with a 4-speed torque converter from the Japanese concern Jatco, but installing just a 4-speed gearbox was considered pointless, since with it the image of the model as a technologically advanced car would immediately fade.

The Lada Xray has been on the country's market for quite some time. The Internet has accumulated a lot of reviews, wishes and complaints from drivers of this car regarding the transmission. Let us remind you that when designing this car, the designers were faced with a choice: how to equip the Lada transmission, except for the version with mechanics. There were two options: automatic gearbox and robotic transmission. The decision made by AvtoVAZ was to choose the second option. After analyzing all the factors influencing the implementation of a particular box, the developers settled on the option with a robot. Why? And what came of it? Let's try to figure it out.
What kind of oil to fill
At the factory, it is recommended to fill the Lada XRAY car engine with Rosneft oil with a viscosity of 5W40. This is not the best thing on the market, but when comparing price and quality, it is not the worst option. It operates in a wide range of temperatures (with ambient temperatures from -30 to +35° C) and is suitable for a large number of regions. If you live in a region where temperatures outside this spectrum prevail, you will need to choose another option. There is a difference in quality and it is classified by the API system. Of the later ones, we can note SL, SM, SL, where SL is the best of the existing ones.
When developing this type, we took into account not only the wear resistance of the engine, but also ensuring the safety of the sealing elements of the power plant (oil seals, gaskets, etc.). Well, accordingly, the higher the class, the higher the cost. But due to the fact that the service life of the power plant will directly depend on what kind of oil is poured into the XRAY, you can purchase more expensive materials to increase the service life of the engine. When purchasing materials from dubious places, there is a danger of purchasing a fake, so buy only from authorized stores.

Semi-automatic on Lada X-Ray
After the presentation of the Lada X-Ray concept with a manual gearbox, the question of an alternative to mechanics remained open and was of great interest to potential consumers. The need to develop a transmission option other than a manual transmission was unconditional. This is especially true for residents of megacities, who deal with the phenomenon of traffic jams every day. Changing gears manually using a lever in this driving mode is physically not very convenient.
Drivers were wondering what kind of automatic transmission would be on the X-Ray, and it turned out to be a semi-automatic AMT (auto-manual transmission). During the time that elapsed from the presentation of the Lada at the exhibition to its launch into mass production, AvtoVAZ decided to introduce a semi-automatic robotic gearbox as a second transmission option. This type of transmission is a five-speed gearbox, similar in principle to a manual gearbox, in which the function of disengaging and engaging the clutch with the road is carried out by an electronic control system (which is why it is commonly called a robot).
The gearbox of the Lada X-Ray is developed on the five-speed platform from the VAZ 2180 and has similar technical characteristics. Moreover, the main mechanism of this gearbox was not replaced, but only improved together with the German concern Friedrichshafen.
Stages of replacing lubricant Lada X-Ray
Changing the oil on this model is the same as on most cars. But there are always some nuances, which will be described in the article below.
This LADA model is equipped with 1.6 liter VAZ-21129 and 1.8 liter VAZ-21179 petrol engines. Both of them have 16 valves, like other modifications:
- Lada X-Ray (Lada Xray);
- Lada X-Ray Cross.
The replacement process for these engines and modifications will be the same. But we will make a reservation that the described instructions are carried out on a car with a volume of 1.6 liters.
Draining waste fluid
To drain oil from the X-Ray, it is advisable to have a hole or overpass, since the main actions will take place from below the car. Therefore, we place the car above the technological ditch, go down into it and remove the engine protection from below. To do this, unscrew the head bolts by 10mm.
When everything is ready, we proceed directly to the drain:
- Raise the hood, then find the filler neck on the engine and unscrew the plug (Fig. 1).

- There are many complaints about the original drain plug regarding unscrewing, so it is better to prepare a new one for replacement (order code 21120101106100). The old one can be unscrewed with a 8mm hexagon, but there is a high probability that the splines will be torn off. Therefore, first you can take a hammer and gently tap it through a wooden plank. After this, the plug should come out easier. If the plug does not fit anywhere, you can use a gas wrench; it is located below the pan, so there is a place to grab it (Fig. 2).

Fig.3 Drain plug on AMT - Now you need to unscrew the oil filter. You can try to do this from above from the engine compartment. There seems to be access, but the filter often gets stuck, there is not enough hand strength, and you can’t get to it with a puller (Fig. 4).
Fig.4 Oil filter on top - Another option is to do it from below; installing a puller here will not be difficult (Fig. 5). But before that, it is advisable to unscrew the crankshaft position sensor using a 10mm wrench. We also remove the wires going to it. Now you shouldn’t break anything, you can unscrew the filter itself.

To unscrew the filter element, it is advisable to have a special puller. If it is not available, you can try to unscrew the filter using improvised means. For these purposes, you can use, for example, an old alternator belt, a regular belt, a bicycle chain or a simple screwdriver.

This method will allow you to drain as much of the used oil as possible, after which you can proceed to further actions. The main thing is not to forget, everything that we unscrewed must be put back in place.
Flushing the lubrication system
Flushing the engine on an X-Ray machine should only be carried out in exceptional cases, which include:
- Purchasing a used car when you cannot be sure of the quality and regularity of lubricant replacements.
- During operation, the service replacement interval was repeatedly exceeded.
- Engine operation with constant frequent overheating, which contributes to coking and other deposits.
- In cases of switching to another type of oil, for example from synthetic to semi-synthetic.
There are several types of flushes for the X-Ray engine:
- Five- or seven-minute, capable of cleaning even the most difficult deposits. They must be used very carefully and strictly follow the instructions printed on the packaging. It is recommended to use them only when absolutely necessary. Since there is a high probability of causing premature wear of the sealing seals. And also clog the oil channels with particles of washed away carbon deposits.
- Special compounds that are added to the oil several hundred kilometers before the expected change. They are more gentle, but there is also a possibility of clogging of the oil channels.
- Flushing oil is the most gentle method of cleaning the engine from the inside. This composition is poured after draining the waste, the engine runs for 15-20 minutes, after which the liquid with deposits is drained. The absence of aggressive additives in the wash composition gently cleans the engine, but is not able to remove heavy contaminants.
- Regular oil that you are going to use when changing. This method is not so popular due to its high cost.
Before flushing the X-Ray, you should weigh all the pros and cons. And also understand that it will not be possible to completely drain the liquid. Some of it will remain in the channels, which will then mix with the new oil.
Installing a filter, filling in new engine fluid
If the X-Ray lubrication system is sealed and does not require repair work to eliminate leaks, you can proceed to adding fresh oil. In addition to the oil itself, we will need a new gasket-washer for the drain plug 21080101106200. As well as the original Livna oil filter 2108-1012005-08. But recently, dealers have begun installing LADA 2105-1012005-82 filters.
Consumables for maintenance
When everything is ready, let's move on to the bay:
- Replace the drain plug with a new washer.
- We wipe the seat under the filter.
- We tighten and put in place the new oil filter. Pre-lubricate the rubber sealing ring with fresh oil.
- Pour new oil into the filler neck.
- We check the level on the dipstick; it should be between the MIN and MAX marks.
- We start the engine, let it run for 10-15 seconds, then turn it off.
- After 5 minutes, check the level with a dipstick and top up if necessary.
There are several opinions regarding replacing the oil filter. Many car owners advise filling it with new oil before installation. However, nothing is said about this in the official X-Ray operating instructions. And also in information from global filter manufacturers it is recommended to simply lubricate the o-ring.
Reasons for Togliatti residents choosing a robot
The robotic gearbox at one time made a leap in the progress of the global auto industry. However, the experience of using this development by many foreign companies, as a kind of know-how, was not always clear-cut. In theory, this is a transmission option that is designed to create stubborn competition with automatics in terms of demand among consumers. But in reality, during many years of practice in introducing this alternative, even famous European concerns had not entirely successful cases of producing cars with semi-automatic devices.
There are many reasons for and against choosing such a transmission. And when choosing the optimal option for which system to be an alternative to mechanics, automobile factories compare many factors in favor of one gearbox or another. The robot has its own advantages and disadvantages. In the case of AvtoVAZ, there were the following reasons for introducing a semi-automatic gearbox.
- The production of a robot is less expensive than an automatic machine.
- The prototype for creating the robot was a mechanic from VAZ.
- One car combines both manual and automatic switching, which attracts more consumers.
Regarding the first advantage from the list, it can be noted that when using it, the manufacturer significantly reduces the cost of manufacturing a car. Due to this, AvtoVAZ was able to offer a competitive price on the market.
If the X-Ray was equipped with an automatic transmission (automatic gearbox), then we can confidently say that the car would cost 50-100 thousand rubles more.
The fact that the robot was developed on the VAZ platform is even more beneficial for the formation of a relatively low price. The third plus of X-Ray, as mentioned above, attracts both fans of automation and adherents of manual control. This advantage, in addition to simplifying pricing, makes the Xray model even more successful in terms of demand and marketing in general.
Technical characteristics and prices of complete sets with different boxes
Lada X-Ray is for sale in various configuration options. The cost of the Lada also depends on these variations. The most budget version of X-Ray with basic equipment can be purchased at a price of 590 thousand rubles. The most equipped hatchback costs just over 720 thousand rubles.
The creators of this model have developed different types of motors for different transmission options. A five-speed manual is produced in combination with a domestic unit, the volume of which is 1.6 liters, and the number of horsepower under the hood is only 106. Also paired with a manual transmission, a Japanese-style engine with a similar volume, but whose power is slightly lower, can be equipped larger - 110 l. With.
AMT is combined with only one type of engine. The unit is more voluminous - 1.8 liters. With the increase in the size of the cylinders, the power of this car also increased. It makes 122 horsepower.
Engine and transmission oils for Lada Xray
Almost all passenger car manufacturers today have SUV-style models in their assortment. AvtoVAZ is also no exception. True, while famous brands in this segment have long ago developed certain patterns for how to present this class to the consumer, such a segment was new to the Tolyatinsk plant.
However, the market showed that VAZ should not restrain itself and presented the LADA XRAY Concept back in 2012. The new product aroused interest not only among journalists, but also among end consumers. The concept was discussed on forums, in reviews, market research was carried out, everything indicated that this model would be in demand. In December 2015, the model began mass production.
The design was developed by a VAZ specialist and the construction together with a RENAULT specialist. This approach made it possible to create a really nice car with a reliable design adapted to Russian realities. This approach made it possible to significantly unify the units with the already produced models of the plant.
XRAY is equipped with two engine models, the main difference between the engines is the volume and number of horsepower.
Model 21129 with an engine capacity of 1596 cm3 106 horsepower and model 21179 with a displacement of 1774 cm3 122 horsepower. And a distinctive feature from VEST is the presence of an imported H4M engine, produced by RENAULT, with a volume of 1598 cm3 and 110 horsepower. The choice is not particularly wide, but it allows you to choose a car according to your desire and level of equipment.
With transmissions, the situation is a little more complicated; at the moment there are 5 model options.
Three of them are boxes manufactured by RENAULT under the indexes JR5 518, JR5 523 and JH3 512.
The remaining two are domestic developments: indexes 21809 manual and 21827 robotic gearbox.
Let's face it, many are waiting for this model with a full-fledged automatic transmission and all-wheel drive, but the plant is in no hurry to bring such configurations to the market. We hope that such equipment will soon appear in the assortment.
