Gazelle heater control unit business pinout

The Gazelle is exactly that hard-working car that is used all year round, regardless of the weather conditions outside. For the winter season, it is necessary to prepare such a car especially carefully so that it is comfortable to move around in even in severe frosts. A gazelle can carry not only cargo, but also people, so the heater must be in working order and provide a flow of warm air from the engine compartment.

Heater Gazelle business principle of operation.

The Gazelle Business heater is not a bad parody of foreign car heaters, but only at first glance. The heater is controlled by buttons and knobs on the electronic unit located on the control panel. The air in the heater, as on all Gazelles, is sucked in by an electric fan through the grilles under the windshield and, passing through air ducts and deflectors, enters the cabin.

Coolant is supplied to the heater radiator through a tap, the opening and closing of which is carried out by an electric drive. It is distinguished from the same taps of previous models by the presence of an additional fitting. When the valve is closed, the liquid is redirected back to the cooling system.

Characteristics of the cooling system

The Gazelle was equipped with engines from the Zavolzhsky Motor Plant marked ZMZ 402, ZMZ 405 and ZMZ 406. The design, circuit and operating principle of all three cooling systems are similar. Of course, there are some differences, but they are not that big.

Like any other cooling system, the ZMZ 405 engine has both positive and negative sides. So, if the thermostat breaks down, the power unit begins to overheat very much, especially in the summer season, when the temperature outside is 30 degrees Celsius or higher.

The most dangerous thing in this case is the failure of the cooling fan.

Heater Gazelle business device.

The tap is controlled automatically by the heater control unit depending on the selected temperature. In addition, the temperature of the air supplied to the cabin is regulated by a central damper, which, by turning, directs the air flow, or part of it, through or bypassing the radiator.

In addition to the central damper, there are a number of dampers that redistribute the air flow. The dampers of the Gazelle Business heater, unlike previous models, are controlled by gear motors, not cables. The control is carried out by the heater control unit. The electric heater fan is located inside the housing and to access it it is necessary to remove and disassemble the entire heater. Despite the fact that the fan electric motor is imported, this arrangement completely negates all the advantages of the heater.

The speed of the electric motor is regulated smoothly by turning the handle on the control unit, due to the electronic regulator located on the heater body. To access it, as well as access to almost all elements of the heater, you need to remove the front panel completely. The only thing that can be changed without removing the panel is the heater core. To change it, just remove the glove compartment.

How to fix heating problems on stoves in Gazelle

When constructing the old-style Gazelle stove, the manufacturer did not think through the heating design effectively enough. Because of this, it does not heat well, allowing cold air to enter from the outside. The faucet may have poor flow capacity, and even a clogged radiator can quickly lead to problems. These heaters were available on cars produced before the early 2000s, and they require regular cleaning. The simplest thing a driver can do in such a situation is to clean the system and lines.

These manipulations are not always enough to achieve effective heating. In this case, motorists will come to the aid of a small modernization of the system. The easiest option is to replace the aluminum radiator with a copper analogue. Also, many people install an additional new pump under the vacuum booster. In some cases, using foam rubber seals or coating problem areas with sealant helps. It is best to use silicone sealant, which seals the joints well.

However, the design of the new Gazelle stove cannot be called ideal for those who have to travel a lot of time in the winter, and even outside the city. In this case, you can resort to the following sequential algorithm:

  1. Seal the doorways, dashboard and other potentially problematic areas in the cabin with any insulating material. You can even use sound insulation. As a result, heat will be retained better, and the flow of cold, on the contrary, will be reduced.
  2. Some people find it helpful to replace the inlet and outlet in the stove itself.
  3. Alternatively, you can replace the heater. This can improve the efficiency of the entire system.
  4. In practice, it has been proven that heating can be improved by installing an additional radiator in addition to the standard one. They can be placed under a common cover and connected by tubes into one system.

If a second heater is installed in the system, the antifreeze heats up better, and this will inevitably affect the temperature inside the cabin. Warmth will be better retained in the cabin, which will lead to an increase in the level of comfort when traveling in the Gazelle in the winter.

Heater Gazelle business troubleshooting.

What to do if something in the heater does not work? Due to the design of the heater, diagnostics in case of failure of its parts is difficult. Initially, as always, you need to check the fuse.

Checking gearmotors.

Checking the gear motors of the windshield blower dampers and deflectors can be checked without completely removing the panels. It is enough to remove its lower part. The main damper motor is accessible from the driver's side. To check gearmotors, you need to disconnect the connector of its electric motor, the connector with a lock, and connect a tester to it in voltmeter mode or a test lamp. With the ignition and heater on, you must press the button that controls this damper. The control lamp should light up. If the lamp is on and the gearmotor does not work, it must be replaced.

Well-deserved popularity in the market is the result of low prices and good quality

The optimal price-quality ratio allows this model, for many years, to maintain its first position in the light truck market in the territory of the former Soviet Union. Steady popularity is dictated by the low price of the car itself and the availability of spare parts. For example, a GAZ 3302 clutch will cost 2.5 times less than a similar model of a Mercedes, MAN or other truck. The current situation in this market segment indicates the high competitiveness of the Russian truck. In addition to domestic buyers, the model is very popular among motorists in Ukraine, Moldova, Belarus and other post-Soviet countries.

The simplicity of the design and easy access to the vehicle components allows you to change the coil, distributor or radiator of the GAZ 3302 in 15-20 minutes, even in road conditions. The highly efficient GAZ 3302 heater is also accessible. Its operation will satisfy users even in severe frosts. A simple electrical circuit of the GAZ 3302 allows you to identify any malfunction during the operation of electrical equipment in a matter of minutes. You can quickly purchase spare parts for the Gazelle, both in real retail outlets and in online auto parts stores.

The positive characteristics of the GAZ 3302 among motorists are based on its high reliability and practicality. The hardworking and fast Gazelle has been successfully operated for two decades in a wide variety of climatic conditions in the Russian Federation and CIS countries. This is the brightest representative of the fifth generation of Gorky light-duty trucks.

Radical changes to the electrical circuit

In particular, the electrical wiring of the Gazelle 3302 has changed significantly due to the appearance of long-awaited elements:

  1. Diesel engine;
  2. ABS in the brake drive;
  3. Air conditioning;
  4. Cruise control.

Diesel Gazelle

With the advent of long-awaited diesel engines in the line of power units, in particular, a Cummins engine made in the USA, the electrical equipment layout has also changed.

Although the diesel engine is free of the ignition system traditional for gasoline engines, its design contains a lot of other electrical components, among which the main ones are:

  1. Fuel pump control unit;
  2. Exhaust gas afterburning system control unit.

Caution: using non-standard firmware for the engine control unit is not recommended, since the factory settings are designed to balance the different torque of the engine and gearbox.

Accordingly, the wiring of the Gazelle Business has also undergone changes (compared to the wiring diagram of the Gazelle with the 402 engine), since in the diesel version the following is installed:

  1. more powerful battery,
  2. new starter with improved characteristics;
  3. high performance generator;

Since I decided to cut the engine shield to ideally place the engine in the engine compartment, I had to disassemble the dashboard and stove in order to gain access to the cutting areas.
Remembering how I froze with this stove in the winter, I took a closer look at the design. It turned out that the central air ducts in it always blow, either through the radiator, or (and taking into account the quality of workmanship - always) directly from the street. Since they are always plugged up and covered with all sorts of rubbish (I am no exception), I decided to remove them. Like class. At the same time, freeing up space for a 2-din radio in a human place, and not in the glove compartment.

Then I disassembled and reassembled the body, threw the damper onto the central air ducts, covered the hole with a strip of plastic and taped it all together. I also removed the inflow/recirculation damper because... its design is such that the likelihood of it being in the positions in which it actually works is not high. And I only use the inflow. But if the damper is not in the right place, all the cold air will go directly into the cabin, no matter how hard the stove tries.

And here is the final view:

Lifetime tests will show who was right - GAZ designers (as well as manufacturers) or me. They say that old-style stoves also heat and blow well. Let's see.

And I’ll just show off the door trims:

I confess, nothing on installing the engine today. Beaver everyone!

Additional components

The Gazelle business wiring diagram has also undergone modification due to the appearance of:

  1. components and parts from ZF and Sachs in the clutch drive;
  2. power steering from ZF Lenksysteme;
  3. electrically heated exterior mirrors;
  4. a different front panel with a new instrument cluster;
  5. audio systems from Blaupunkt;
  6. updated cabin heater control unit.

In addition, cruise control of the Gazelle-Business family appeared as an option for the version with a power unit from Cummins, which also required changes to the electrical circuit of the car.

Conclusions: having subjected the Gazelle Business cars to modernization, the automaker has seriously improved the electrical wiring, for example, compared to the model with the 406 engine. That is why when replacing it or replacing its components, you should be guided by the manufacturer's electrical diagram.

Modern cars are equipped with heaters that maintain a set temperature in the cabin thanks to the presence of sensors and electric drives in their system. But the more complex the mechanism, the more of its elements can fail. Electronics are “afraid” of high humidity, sudden temperature changes and dust. And such factors are very difficult to avoid in a car. Therefore, some components or the entire mechanism as a whole may periodically fail.

Car cooling system

In Gazelle Business the stove is an integral part of the engine cooling system. When the engine operates, a large amount of heat is generated that must be removed. Heat is released due to fuel combustion and from rubbing surfaces. If the heat is not removed, the engine will heat up very quickly and fail. The cooling system has two circuits (small and large circle), they are separated by a thermostat. When the liquid is cold, it circulates in a small circle, and when it warms up, it circulates in a large circle. This allows you to quickly reach operating temperature and not overheat. During the warm season, heat is released into the atmosphere, and when cold weather sets in, part of the heat is spent on heating the cabin.

Diagnostics

If the speed control unit fails, then you need to understand which of the elements of the entire circuit has failed. The control of the Gazelle stove is electronic, and all drives are electric.

  1. To begin with, with the engine turned off, we try to turn the temperature regulator. When you turn it, you should hear clicks from the gear motor. If there are no clicks, then you need to check the power in the block that comes to the tap opening motor. This can be done using a test lamp or a multimeter.
  2. If the fan speed controller does not work, you need to check its operation in all positions. If it does not work in all positions except the last one, then the reason is a faulty rheostat. If operation is not heard in any of the positions, then you need to check the power supply to the fan block. If power comes in, then it is broken.
  3. If the stove adjustment works correctly, but the display does not light up, then the display itself or the backlight is faulty.

Repair

Repair of the control unit will directly depend on the cause of the malfunction:

  1. If the power check shows that there is no “+” on the gear motor, then there is a malfunction in the heater control system. It needs to be dismantled and either repaired or replaced with a new one. For repairs, it is better to use the services of specialists, and if you have experience in this work, you can try to solve the problem yourself. To dismantle it is necessary: remove the top drawer for documents; unscrew the front panel (two screws on top and two on bottom); remove the decorative trim; pull out the entire panel so that all terminals can be numbered; disconnect the terminals; then take out the control element itself. Then reassemble everything in reverse order.
  2. To replace the resistor, you need to either remove the entire dashboard, or cut a hole under the box for documents, after first removing the box itself. To replace the fan, it is necessary to dismantle the entire instrument panel along with the stove. Then disconnect the stove from the dashboard, “halve” it and remove the resistor. If there is no power to the fan block, then the reason must be sought in the heater control system. To do this, you need to check it with a multimeter. 1. To repair the display, you need to dismantle the entire heater adjustment element (as described in point No. 1) and repair or replace the entire assembly unit. If you repair it yourself, you can change the handle illumination diodes to a different color or change the brightness.

The stove is a very important element in a car. It affects not only the driver’s comfort, but also the safety of driving (since if the windows fog up in cold weather, driving becomes difficult). And it’s better to do all the work in a warm garage or parking lot than to do it on the road.

Tips for motorists

One of the most common and unpleasant breakdowns on GAZelle cars in winter is a malfunction of the stove. There could be several reasons for this problem. The first step is to check whether the heating supply or return pipe has fallen out. In this case, the hot air will not heat the interior of the car, but the road. If such a gap is confirmed, the pipe must be put in place and secured with a clamp.

If none of the pipes fall out, you need to check their temperature. The return line must be cooler than the supply line. However, it is quite difficult to determine the temperature difference between two nozzles by touching them with your hand.

Another reason for improper heating of the GAZelle can be a clogged stove radiator, which should be removed and thoroughly blown out. The radiator can become clogged both from the outside with various debris that gets into it when the car is moving, and from the inside with the resulting scale, rust, etc. After disassembling the radiator, pay attention to its temperature. If the radiator is cold, it should be repaired or completely replaced.

If the heating radiator is in good condition, the pipes should be checked for the presence of bundles, which may not be noticeable during external inspection. The manufacturer recommends replacing all hoses of the GAZelle car every 3 years.
