Electric fuel pump
In automobile systems where gasoline is supplied by injectors, pressure is needed. The use of old pumps, the design of which involves a completely mechanical principle, is unacceptable in modern cars. For this reason, the injectors use only an electric pump that pumps gasoline directly from the fuel tank, which ensures the injection of a jet of fuel into all parts of the power system.
Repair of fuel pump VAZ 2110-2112, step-by-step progress of work
- First of all, it is necessary to dismantle the fuel pump. To do this, remove the rear seat cushion.
- Using a screwdriver, unscrew the two screws and remove the hatch cover.
- Disconnect the electrical connector.
- Using a wrench set to “17”, unscrew the fitting on the fuel supply pipe and remove it.
- In the same way, unscrew the drain pipe fitting and move the tube to the side.
- Take the head at “7” and unscrew the eight fastening nuts of the clamping ring, and then remove it.
- Carefully lift the assembly and remove the fuel pump, removing the float from the tank hole.
- Using a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the two screws and disconnect the fuel level indicator.
- Now you need to disconnect the electrical connector from the pump. To do this, remove the two clamps using a screwdriver and remove the fuel pump from the guides.
- While holding the nuts with a wrench at “5”, unscrew the two screws of the fuel pump cover.
- Remove the cover and remove the fuel pump.
- If the fuel pump electric motor is faulty, replace it with a new one.
- If the rubber bushing of the fuel pump is deformed (tears or cracks are observed), replace it.
- If the O-rings show signs of excessive compression, tears or abrasions, replace them with new ones.
- After carrying out the required repairs, reassemble all parts in reverse order.
- When assembling the fuel pump, lubricate the rubber bushings that center it in the housing with WD-40.
- When installing the fuel pump assembly, the arrow on the flange should point to the rear of the vehicle.
- Before installing the hatch cover, start the power unit and check the fuel pump for fuel leaks.
Making a purchase
At an auto parts store, tell the manager the VIN code of your car and ask them to select the original or analogues. The priority is the original, but we will also talk about possible options for purchasing an analogue.
When making your own selection, consider this: the make of your car, model, installed engine, body type. If you are searching online, this is all you need to enter into the search engine. The same is communicated to store managers. This way you will find analogues and original parts. In this case, the geometric parameters of the new pump must be identical to those of the old one. Of course, adapters solve the problem, but it’s not worth complicating an already complex system with a new unit.
Malfunctions
The very first sure indication that a VAZ fuel injector pump is faulty is the following symptom: the engine “jerks” during operation, especially at medium and high speeds. This indicates that the fuel pressure is insufficient.
But this is precisely what the fuel pump is responsible for. But sometimes the reason should be sought in the injectors, as well as the RTD.
Fuel pressure regulator VAZ 2110
Another symptom is failures in operation, or even stopping the fuel supply, which causes the engine to stall.
- First you should check the RTD valve, this is done using a liquid pressure gauge. After stopping the engine, we observe a reverse outflow of gasoline into the gas tank. When the valve is working properly, the gasoline pressure drops slowly, and the slower, the better the valve works;
- This is followed by checking the fuel rail, also using the same pressure gauge. On the VAZ 2110 there is an injector, the pressure in the ramp should be about 4 atmospheres, with a deviation of no more than 0.4;
- Next, we turn our attention to fuel filters. If they are clean and in good working order, then the pressure gauge needle only shakes when the pump is running. Deviation 0.3 atm. or more indicates that the filter needs to be changed, since it is most likely clogged;
Master node of the system
The VAZ-2110 fuel pump is equipped with an electric drive. Its body is lowered into the fuel tank. Gasoline is both a pumpable fuel and a coolant. It should be remembered that traveling with an empty tank is fraught with overheating of the VAZ-2110 injector fuel pump.
This electrical device is an independent unit. Accordingly, its operation does not depend on the state of other mechanisms. A necessary condition for rotating the VAZ-2110 fuel pump rotor is maintaining normal voltage on the on-board network.
The voltage comes through the ignition switch. When the key is moved to position 1, the circuit is closed to turn on the drive. The VAZ fuel pump fills the fuel rail. The engine is ready to start.
Model selection
It is best to install an imported fuel pump on the VAZ 2110 injector, capable of delivering a performance of up to 7 atm. It will not only last much longer, but will also ensure better and longer operation of the injector and improve the quality of the mixture at the outlet of the nozzle.
You should know that Bosch fuel pumps usually differ only in length, location of terminal connectors, and sometimes in the diameter of the housing. Therefore, it is advisable to either go shopping with an old device, or make some minor modifications at home.
To avoid buying a fake, keep in mind that any Bosch gas pump is packaged in very durable packaging. The bag contains purified gasoline in which the device is immersed. If you smell it, it means the seal is broken, corrosion may begin inside the pump, it’s better not to buy one.
It is necessary that the gasoline level is no more than half the volume of the tank. Next we proceed like this:
- Disconnect the negative battery;
- Removing the back seat;
- Remove the cover from the hatch;
- Disconnect the electrical connector;
- We remove the fuel supply pipe by unscrewing the fitting;
- We do the same with the drain pipe;
- Remove the clamping ring (it is secured with nuts 7);
- Carefully remove the float from the hole in the tank, remove the electric fuel pump along with the fuel level sensor;
- Using a screwdriver, disconnect the fuel level sensor;
- We remove the clamps and remove the fuel pump itself from the guides;
- Reinstalling a new Bosch pump is simple and straightforward.
You just need to consider a few points:
- If you installed not a new, but a refurbished pump on a VAZ injector, lubricate the centering bushings (WD-40 grease is usually used);
- The fuel pump with a fuel sensor is installed in the tank so that the arrow on the flange faces the rear of the car;
- Be sure to check that all o-rings are intact, but it is best to replace them with new ones.
After replacement, start the engine and check what pressure the fuel supply system produces and whether there are any leaks.
Fuel quality
In addition to failure to comply with maintenance intervals, another common reason that leads to fuel pump failure is gasoline. Not all gas stations have the same quality. Some of them violate transportation and storage rules. As a result of systematic refueling at such gas stations, a large number of foreign particles accumulate in the tank, which clog the fuel pump screen.
This is manifested by a loss of engine power, jerking of the car when driving and, oddly enough, excessive fuel consumption. You have to remove the fuel pump and service it. If this is not done, then it will become impossible to drive the car; fuel will simply stop flowing to the injectors. The reason for this is clearly visible in the photo of a fuel pump with a clogged screen.
Replacing the electric fuel pump
Such a replacement is carried out in the following cases:
- failure or incorrect readings of the fuel sensor;
- weak throughput effect or defect in the fuel intake grid;
- failure of the electric fuel pump.
The tools you will need are a screwdriver and a 10mm socket wrench with a wrench.
- Reduce pressure in the fuel supply system.
- Using the fuel supply hose tip clamp, disconnect 2 hoses in turn.
- Disconnection should be carried out slowly, without using unnecessary force, so that the fuel block fittings remain intact.
- Unscrew the 8 nuts around the circumference of the clamping ring and remove it.
- A wire with negative polarity is attached to one of the nuts; it must be removed carefully.
- We take the electric pump block out of the fuel tank, tilting it slightly, to keep the fuel level indicator sensor lever intact, otherwise it will produce incorrect parameters.
- Remove the sealing rubber ring of the fuel block. If its properties are lost, the product must be replaced.
- Install the product in reverse order.
Important: during installation, the installation arrow on the electric pump cover must point towards the rear of the car!
Important: when installing fuel hoses, follow the direction of fuel supply indicated by the arrows!
Many people ask where the VAZ 2110 fuel pump relay is located? Let us clarify that this electronic device is located in a special recess on the front passenger side of the floorplane. You need to unscrew the plastic cover, there will be 3 relays. Closer to the hood is the required part.
Removing the pumping unit
Before starting work, you must disconnect the terminal from the battery. This will prevent damage to electrical equipment. In addition, replacing the fuel pump may cause a fire.
Let's prepare tools and materials. To remove the VAZ-2110 fuel pump, you need the following:
- Screwdriver.
- 10mm socket wrench.
- Collar.
- Open-end wrench 13.
- Rags.
The device itself is located under the rear seat cushion. To get to the installation location of the fuel pump 2110, you need to remove the seat. Under the casing we find a hatch. We unscrew the hatch. Disconnect the electrical drive connector.
Using an open-end wrench, unscrew the tips of the fuel pipes. We pull off the pipes. Using a spanner, unscrew the 8 nuts around the perimeter of the clamping ring. Release the flange.
There is a gasket under the pressure ring of the fuel pump 2110. The gasket is removed. It is better to change worn tires.
Then we raise the VAZ fuel pump together with the float. Gasoline will leak from the body. To avoid staining the interior, place a rag. There will be up to 1 liter of gasoline left in the old building. Drain it into the tank.
Assembly is carried out in reverse order. There is an arrow on the top of the cover. It should point towards the trunk. This is the correct pump position.
When replacing, do not forget to remove the float and level sensor.
These spare parts are installed on the new structure.
All operations, including preparation, will take less than an hour. After replacement, perform a test. Start the engine. Finally, you should check the fuel pump, make sure the connections are tight and there are no leaks.
What kind of fuel pumps are installed on VAZ 2110/2112 cars
The fuel pump is considered the most important element of the fuel system of any car. So, depending on what type of engine the VAZ 2110/2112 model is equipped with, the choice of fuel pump will also depend. An electric pump is installed on injection cars, and a mechanical one on carburetor cars.
The family is equipped with fuel pumps produced by AvtoVAZ. However, these units do not have a high service life and reliability, so often car owners do not wait until the fuel pump fails and replace it.
Installed at the factory on every VAZ 2110/2112 model
Most often, fuel pumps (Russia) and “Bosch” (Germany) are chosen for replacement. Their quality and durability have been known for a long time, although their cost is several times higher than the price of AvtoVAZ gasoline pumps.
The German manufacturer ensures the quality and durability of the products
It’s worth mentioning separately about the location of the fuel pump in the VAZ 2110/2112: the device is not located under the hood. To achieve maximum optimization of the fuel pump, manufacturers install it directly into the fuel tank. That is, to get to the pump, you will need to fold back the cushion in the back seat of the car and open the hatch hidden under the carpet.
The fuel tank and fuel pump are located under the seat cushion.
Carburetor engine
First, a few words about the well-known mechanical fuel pump. It pumps fuel in cars with a carburetor. The key element is the membrane, which, by moving up and down, ensures the delivery of fuel from the tank to the carburetor. The design includes a valve system that ensures the injection of gasoline and prevents its return to the fuel line.
The movement of the mechanical parts is carried out directly from the engine itself; for this, where the fuel pump is located, its drive is provided in the cylinder block. Fuel can be pumped manually using the provided lever. The pump does not require an autonomous lubrication system, since it is included in a common line with the engine.
How to check the performance of the fuel pump
Checking the condition of the fuel pump is carried out only in cases where certain signs of its malfunction are observed:
increased noise during pump operation;
the engine power has sharply decreased - the car cannot accelerate quickly;
The car does not start because no fuel is supplied to the engine unit.
You can determine that the cause of the malfunction lies in the fuel pump yourself. In addition, this does not require complex diagnostic equipment or special knowledge.
Initially, you need to check whether the pump itself is working. After the ignition is turned on, a slight buzzing noise should be heard under the rear seat cushion for a few seconds. If there is sound, it means the pump is working.
Pressure check
To check the pressure of the fuel pump, you will need a pressure gauge. It will need to be connected to the fuel system, which is located under the hood of the VAZ 2110/2112. A pressure gauge is connected to the fitting of the fuel pipe that goes to the engine. If at idle the device shows a pressure of more than 3.3 kg/cm3, then the fuel pump is clearly faulty.
Fuel pump for injection engine
Forced injection of fuel into the cylinders requires high pressure in the fuel system. The use of an additional pump for this would lead to a significant complication of the vehicle design. Therefore, it was necessary to completely change the existing one, while adhering to the following requirements:
- The pressure generated by the pump must be sufficient to operate the injectors.
- The need to operate in accordance with the commands of the electronic control unit.
- The pump must have high performance.
To meet all the requirements, we had to make the fuel pump electric. This allowed us to solve some of the problems. For greater efficiency, we had to change the location.
The fuel pump of an injection engine consists of the following elements:
- frame;
- stator winding;
- rotor with impeller;
- check and pressure relief valves;
- outlet fitting.
When describing the fuel pump, it is necessary to mention the coarse filter, the so-called mesh, which protects its components from the ingress of foreign particles.
Conclusion
Fuel pumps are represented by a wide range of spare parts, as they are designed to work with a specific type of fuel and specific engines. By purchasing an OEM pump, you are guaranteed to get what you need. Priority is also given to purchasing analogues from the popular Bosch. Don't buy a used pump if you don't want problems! Without forgetting about the operating rules, you can keep even a cheap Meyle, and you will only pay once for purchase and installation.

Prevention and useful tips
For trouble-free operation and increasing the life of the fuel pump, professionals recommend:
- refuel only with high-quality fuel;
- maintain the maximum fuel level in the tank;
- do not use a car with a discharged battery;
- promptly replace the fuel filter;
- use sport driving mode less often.
Self-diagnosis and replacement of the fuel pump is quite simple. To do this, you just need to carefully follow the recommendations of professionals. The same applies to preventive measures. Refuel with high-quality gasoline and do not forget to replace the fuel filter on time. Then you will have problems with the fuel pump much less often.
A brief tour of brands
We recommend purchasing original OEM parts for your vehicle. You won’t have to choose for long, since you are buying a fuel pump specifically for your model. The market for originals is represented by some of the brands that we will list below. The difference is in labeling and approach to quality assessment. For example, at Mercedes-Benz factories, fuel pumps are tested several times additionally, so that only the best parts are sent to assemble the car.
If your finances are not very limited, pay attention to the following analogues: Pierburg, Bosch, Siemens (Germany). The products are cheaper than original parts, but are slightly inferior in quality.
Cheaper options: JP Group (Denmark), Meyle (Germany). It cannot be ruled out that they will last a little less than 200 thousand kilometers.
We advise you to take analogues of a high price category - it’s worth it.
