Even a novice among car enthusiasts, while driving a car, will find the oil level sensor light on the dashboard without any problems. But not everyone is able to adequately respond to a situation when this light is on and does not want to go out.

As soon as the oil level sensor on a VAZ 2110 stops working, many car owners try to get to the nearest service station as quickly as possible to fix the breakdown. But is it worth doing? If you have at least basic knowledge in the field of repair, and also have an instruction manual at hand, it is quite possible to solve the issue yourself. At the same time, the financial costs will be incomparable compared to what you will pay at a car service center.

How does he work

First you need to understand how exactly this sensor functions.

The device itself is based on measuring resistance. It is immersed in engine oil. In this situation, the resistance is at its maximum values.

If oil leaks from the crankcase, resistance drops, causing a warning to appear on the instrument panel.

It is the oil level sensor that is responsible for providing the command. With its help, the lubricant level is monitored, and the driver promptly learns that the amount of oil has decreased and appropriate measures must be taken.

But there are situations in which the sensor itself stops working. Because of this, the electronic control unit receives erroneous data and a warning light lights up on the panel, although everything is fine with the oil.

Consequently, you have to intervene in the design of the machine, look for an oil sensor in it and replace it with a new measuring device.

Why does the DUM lamp light up?

Fault indicator

There may be only two reasons for this in total.

  1. The oil sensor has broken down, or its contacts have oxidized, which is why the device can be considered faulty.
  2. The oil level has dropped below critical.

Functionality check

More or less experienced drivers can determine that it is the sensor that is causing confusion in the car’s operation, since there are no noticeable signs of oil leakage. Therefore, the first priority is to check the condition of the device that monitors the lubricant level.

The check is performed as follows:

  • The car is placed on an overpass or inspection hole;
  • The motor protection is removed. It can be put aside for a while;
  • Now find the oil level sensor in the underbody space;
  • Turn on the car's ignition. This way you can supply power to a device that may have failed;
  • Disconnect the wires going to the sensor;
  • Using a voltmeter, connect the probes to ground and the connecting block;
  • If the voltmeter shows 12 volts, then the sensor is working normally.

But in the absence of tension, we can talk about one of three reasons for such a situation:

  • The display unit is broken;
  • There are defects on the contacts;
  • There is a break in the wiring in the sensor circuit.

Therefore, if the wiring is in good condition and the contacts are clean, then further actions will consist of replacing the fuel level sensor on your VAZ 2110.

Replacing the sensor

Replacing this sensor is a simple task that anyone can do. To carry out the replacement, you only need one 10mm wrench and the desire to repair the car yourself.

It is better to carry out work from the inspection hole and when installing a new sensor, replace the sealing ring with a new one, having previously lubricated it with sealant.

  • Remove the connector from the sensor and unscrew the bolt securing the sensor to the engine block.

  • We take out the sensor and treat the surface to remove old oil.

  • Install the new sensor in reverse order.

Purpose of the sensor

It is considered the norm among car owners to open the hood as soon as possible and check the engine oil level on the dipstick. However, in critical situations, oil can leak out of the engine very quickly. This happens if an unexpected blow to a stone breaks the oil pan or if the crankshaft oil seal leaks.

In such a situation, the engine must be turned off as quickly as possible, because seconds count. Relying solely on the pressure sensor in the lubrication system is not always reasonable. If the oil pump is working properly, it can maintain operating pressure until the last drop of oil.

Therefore, on modern passenger cars, in addition to the pressure sensor, a DUM is also installed. It does not replace the usual dipstick, since it is not able to inform the driver about the amount of oil in the engine and that it is time to top it up. The only function of the DUM is to signal in the car interior that an emergency situation has occurred when the amount of oil has dropped to a critical level and an immediate stop is required.

Oil rotation methods

In practice, two options for oil rotation are used:

  • oil change with engine flush;
  • carrying out work without flushing the engine.

In answer to the first question, how to change the oil of a VAZ 2110 with engine flushing, the following actions are required:

  • drain the waste;
  • add oil to flush the engine, then run the engine at idle speed for 10 minutes;
  • drain the flush;
  • add oil for new operation of the power unit (the disadvantage of this method is the presence of flushing residues, which may subsequently affect the operating mode of the “engine”).

When carrying out the procedure without flushing the engine, new lubricant is immediately added through the crankcase neck, where it is mixed with the remnants of previously used engine oil, which does not improve its properties.

The order of replacing engine oil and its filter:

1. Place the car on a lift or inspection hole, and then remove the plug from the crankcase neck to create favorable conditions for oil leakage. 2. Using a 17mm wrench, remove the drain plug of the pan and collect the waste in a technical tank.

3. Remove the used oil filter.

4. If you do not have a special filter remover, you can use auxiliary tools.

5. Before installing a new filter for cleaning engine oil, it is recommended to fill in fresh engine oil to half its volume and lubricate the sealing ring of the product with the same lubricant. This is done in order to prevent the creation of so-called “air cushions” when starting the unit.

6. Install the filter and oil drain plug to the workplace.

7. Add fresh aggregate oil to the crankcase and use a crankcase dipstick to test the amount of added fluid. Control line - approximately 2/3 of the distance up the dipstick from the bottom line, indicating the minimum lubrication level.

8. After adding oil, replace the filler plug and the dipstick.

We start the engine, after the red banner fades, indicating insufficient oil pressure in the system, turn off the unit, check the oil level with a dipstick, and if necessary, top up to the required level.

Oil level sensor VAZ 2110: purpose and principle of operation

As the name suggests, the oil level sensor serves to monitor it and also alert the driver when the level is critically low. In fact, the sensor partially performs the function of a dipstick in the oil pan. It does not show what level is in the engine at the current moment. It only tells us that there is either no oil in the oil pan at all or critically little . This can be vital if a large oil leak suddenly occurs. For example, the crankcase sump is broken, or the crankshaft bearing has been squeezed out due to excess pressure and the entire contents of the sump are evenly distributed throughout the engine compartment.

As soon as the oil level drops, the warning light on the on-board control system (OBS) panel lights up and the buzzer sounds. Our task is not to miss this moment and immediately turn off the engine, and only then understand the causes of the leak. Because every second of engine operation without lubrication threatens at least a major overhaul.

The oil pressure sensor is a simple reed switch device. Its operating principle is based on the influence of a magnet on a reed switch element. When the sensor is immersed in oil, the float with a built-in magnet is in the upper position and does not affect the reed element.

Possible sensor malfunctions

Quite often, the DUM is subject to various breakdowns, but most often the problem with this sensor is oil leakage from under its sealing ring, which subsequently leads to oil contamination of the engine.

It also happens that the electromagnetic part of the sensor stops working and the low oil level lamp on the display unit constantly lights up.

Oil level sensor VAZ 2110. How to check and replace

The oil level sensor in VAZ 2110 engines, and indeed the entire tenth family, is not as critically important as, for example, an oil pressure sensor or a temperature sensor. If we operate a car in the city, we may not even know about its presence, unless the warning lamp reminds us of itself when we turn on the ignition. But this is the case when the level is ok. How to change the oil level sensor on a VAZ 2110, where it is located, what functions it performs, we will figure it out together.

So why is it attached to the engine with one 8 bolt, no gasket or anything?

So why is it attached to the engine with one 8 bolt, no gasket or anything?

Damn guys, I'm already tired of this sensor. It flows and that's it. The entire engine is already covered in oil. I’ll catch up in a day or two. then again. I put it on sealant and it didn't help. We can put an elastic band between it and the block.

To prevent it from unscrewing, put a drop on the stop thread bolt.

How to check serviceability

The need for checking arises more often if, when the oil level in the engine is sufficient (controlled by the dipstick), a warning light turns on in the cabin. Or, on the contrary, it does not light up when the ignition is turned on before starting the engine.

To understand that the problem is in the sensor and it needs to be measured, a multimeter is enough, and if it is faulty, replace it. Having removed the block from the terminal, turn on the ignition. Check if there is 12 V voltage on the wire.

Marking

All engines of the VAZ-2110 family use one type of part, the catalog number of which is: 21083-3839210-03.

The price of spare parts, depending on the retail chain, is 250–400 rubles. You can find products from domestic manufacturers, as well as Chinese parts. In appearance, they can be easily distinguished by the color of the float. For repairs, original spare parts bearing the LADA brand are preferred.

About the sensor

Many people compare this sensor with an oil pressure sensor, but these parts are completely different. The oil level sensor is designed to warn of low oil level in the engine crankcase and is directly connected to the display unit. The operation of the DUM is similar to a dipstick, because it only shows the presence or absence of oil. The usefulness of this sensor lies in the fact that if a heavy oil leak occurs, the sensor will inform the driver about it, and the driver will already take actions that will prevent the engine from breaking down.

The sensor itself is a tube inside which contains an electromagnetic contact that closes when a magnetic float is near it. In the picture below you can see in detail how the sensor works.

As soon as the float drops, the contacts inside the tube open and a low oil level signal appears on the display unit.

Where is the sensor located

The part is located at the bottom of the cylinder block, to the left and below the oil filter. To get to it, you will need to drive into an inspection hole or lift and dismantle the pallet protection. To check the condition of the wiring, you will need to clean the connector from dirt and oil residues that inevitably fall on it when unscrewing the filter.

Getting ready for replacement

Before changing the oil, carefully read several recommendations that all masters adhere to.

  • The lubricant should be drained after a short trip, when the power unit has not yet cooled down, because warm oil has better fluidity, which means it can be drained more.
  • If the engine is cold, it is necessary to warm it up to 80C.
  • It is advisable to fill in the same oil that was poured into the engine before.

How much oil should I pour?

Before changing motor lubricant, many drivers have a question about how much oil should be poured into the VAZ 2110 engine. Here opinions differ a little, because some of the oil remains in the system, and some drivers prefer to pour oil up to the MAX mark, while others prefer to pour a little less. There are also power units with 8 valves, and others with 16. But on average, this figure ranges from 3.2 to 3.5 liters. Therefore, you need to buy a four-liter canister - this amount will definitely be enough.

Which motor oil to choose?

When changing the oil, you can immediately replace the oil filter. Therefore, when buying oil in a store, do not forget to purchase an oil filter of the same type that is installed in your car.

Oils are divided into 3 types:

  • synthetics;
  • semi-synthetic;
  • mineral water

It is very important to determine exactly what kind of oil your engine needs:

  • If the power unit of your car is in excellent condition, does not consume oil, and has stable pressure, you can use synthetic all year round and change it according to the regulations.
  • If the engine is in poor condition, seasonal lubricants are recommended: synthetic, semi-synthetic or mineral. Once you decide on the type of lubricant, decide on the brand.

Today, there are various brands of high-quality motor lubricating mixtures on the market, and this is the greatest difficulty. Try to decide for yourself the best ratio of quality and price. The viscosity is not lower than 10W-40 (otherwise it is possible that it will begin to leak through the seals).

The most suitable brand of oil, according to many, is Shell Helix.

If you have already decided on your brand a long time ago, then buy it and beware of counterfeits - in today's market, counterfeit products account for approximately 40% of the total volume.

When purchasing oil in special stores, for which the main thing is their reputation, you will probably pay more, but it will be a justified overpayment, which is compensated by excellent engine performance.

Replacement

The entire oil change process can be divided into three main stages:

  • Draining old lubricating fluid;
  • Washing;
  • Filling with new lubricant.

We will go through each stage in more detail in order to understand all the nuances of the procedure.

Removing the plug

Drain

In order for the new lubricant to show its best side, the car owner’s first priority is to drain the old oil. For this:

  • Unscrew the oil filler plug. This will get rid of a possible vacuum, the liquid will be able to drain better from the crankcase;
  • Do not forget the above recommendations regarding a warm engine. Heated oil has a lower viscosity and therefore flows out more efficiently and in larger volumes;
  • Place an empty container with a volume of at least 5 liters under the drain hole;
  • Remove the plug from the drain hole;
  • Allow the oil to drain into the prepared container for some time;
  • This usually takes about 10 minutes;
  • Do not try to keep the plug in your hand when unscrewing at the cost of exposing your skin to the stream of oil. It is hot, so you can easily get burned. If the stopper falls into the container when the liquid has cooled, you can easily remove it and clean it;
  • When the grease completely stops draining, the draining can be considered complete.

Drain the grease

Flushing

Whatever one may say, even the most thorough draining of the lubricating fluid will not allow you to fully clean the system. Therefore, we recommend flushing before filling.

  1. Screw the plug from the drain hole.
  2. Pour a special flushing solution into the oil filling hole to the minimum mark.
  3. Turn on the engine and let it run for about 15 minutes.
  4. Stop the engine and drain the fluid through the drain hole, as when removing old oil.
  5. Remove the oil filter and wait until the remaining lubricant is completely drained. Then install a new filter in its place.
  6. Be sure to fill the filter with about 100 ml of fresh new oil.

Filling the filter

Fill

Now we have reached the last step - adding new oil to your car's engine. The procedure for the VAZ 2110 looks like this:

  • The oil filter installation area is thoroughly wiped with a rag;
  • A little oil is poured into the new filter. We have already told you about its quantity;
  • Using the same lubricant, treat the o-ring. It must be new. Never use the sealant from an old filter;
  • Screw in the drain hole using a plug;
  • Install the oil filter in its rightful place. Do this manually, without using tools. Otherwise, the filter may be damaged;
  • Gradually pour new fluid through the filler hole. This should not be done quickly, since the oil must have time to distribute throughout the system;
  • If the canister turns out to be inconvenient with a wide neck, use a simple household funnel;
  • Fill in about 3 liters of lubricant, then check the level with a dipstick;
  • You will most likely need to add a little more liquid;
  • Ideally, the dipstick should show a level between the minimum and maximum indicators;
  • Tighten the filler hole with a plug;
  • Reinstall the dipstick;
  • Start the engine and let it run for a while;
  • As soon as the oil level light on the dashboard stops lighting, the engine can be turned off;
  • We take the dipstick again and check how much oil is in the system at the moment. If necessary, add lubricant;
  • Be sure to wipe off any surfaces that may have oil on them. This is especially true for the engine. Do not allow any traces of grease to remain on it. When the engine heats up, this is fraught with consequences.

Checking the lubricant level

If you strictly follow the instructions and also correctly select the lubricant for your VAZ 2110, the replacement procedure will become an easy task for you, which you will cope with on your own in literally an hour.

So that you understand, the cost of such a procedure, not counting washing, at a service station will cost you at least 500 rubles. So the ability to change the lubricant in the engine with your own hands is also a great way to save your budget. Considering that replacement is carried out approximately once every 8 thousand kilometers, you can save a lot of money over the entire period of ownership of your VAZ 2110.

  1. Why do you need oil in the gearbox?
  2. Types of oils and their choice
  3. Substitution rules
  4. Replacement procedure

In order for the car to work properly, it is necessary to periodically perform certain preventive maintenance, scheduled repairs, replacement of consumables, and so on. Moreover, the frequency is indicated in the repair and operating manual for your car. A procedure such as changing the oil in a VAZ 2110 gearbox does not take much time and effort. This will take you about an hour, but you won’t have to hire specialists or pay them money for it.

What is the sensor intended for and how does it work?

The name of the sensor speaks for itself. Its role is to monitor the oil level, and when the oil in the engine becomes too low, it notifies the driver about this. That is, this sensor acts as a thermometer in the oil pan, only it measures not the temperature, but the level of the substance contained. It cannot show what the engine oil level is at a given time.

Its main task is to notify the driver that there is very little oil left. An unplanned oil leak may take the driver by surprise, but a device such as an oil level sensor will alert the driver and prevent an accident. When the warning light on the control system comes on, it indicates a low oil level. After such a signal, the task of each driver is to turn off the car, and then begin to understand the cause of the leak. This must be done in order not to damage the engine, which will operate without oil, because repairs will be very expensive.

The design of the sensor is quite banal and does not have any supernatural purposes. The principle of operation is based on a magnet which affects the reed switch. The principle of the influence of a magnet on a reed switch works like this: when the sensor is immersed in oil, the magnet does not affect the reed switch, and if there is not enough oil in the crankcase, then an impact occurs and the reed switch closes, signaling an insufficient amount of oil. A light comes on on the center console and an annoying beep sounds.

Catalog numbers for the oil level sensor for VAZ 2110:

  • 21083-3839210-03/38.3839;

  • 21083-3839210;
