The thermostat protects the engine from overheating. You all understand what sad consequences overheating of the power unit can lead to, and what financial losses the car owner will suffer.

How to check a car's thermostat

There are two main ways to check a car's thermostat. One of them is carried out without removing the part, but requires a pyrometer, and the second is simpler, but the element will need to be removed from the engine during the test.

As you know, the thermostat housing is connected to the upper radiator hose, which is included in a large circle of coolant circulation. Accordingly, with the thermostat working, after starting the engine, the upper radiator hose should remain cold (slightly warm) for some time until antifreeze is released through it.

To check the thermostat without removing it from the engine, get a pyrometer (temperature measuring device). You may come across the opinion that the check should be done without a device, measuring the temperature with your hands, but this is quite dangerous, given the large number of moving parts when the engine is running.

Point the pyrometer at the upper radiator hose and start the engine (cold start). For two or three minus periods, observe the device’s indicators. Next, draw a conclusion about the serviceability of the thermostat according to the following rules:

  • The hose was cold for two or three minutes (or its temperature rose slightly), and then quickly warmed up. This indicates that the thermostat is working properly, and it switched the coolant circulation from a small circle to a large circle after the engine has sufficiently warmed up;
  • The hose initially warmed up slowly. In this case, we can say that the thermostat is stuck in the open position and the antifreeze does not circulate in a small circle;
  • The hose did not begin to warm up quickly after two or three minutes. That is, the thermostat is faulty and it does not switch the coolant circulation from a small circle to a large one.

Important: While checking the thermostat, monitor the engine temperature on the instrument panel. If the thermostat is stuck and won't keep the coolant flowing, the engine will start to overheat, which can lead to expensive parts failure. A widespread and well-known way to test the thermostat yourself is using a saucepan

As you might guess, before diagnostics you will need to remove the thermostat from the car engine and bring it home. After this, do the following:

A widespread and well-known way to test the thermostat yourself is using a saucepan. As you might guess, before diagnostics you will need to remove the thermostat from the car engine and bring it home. After this, do the following:

Take a pot and fill it with water; Inspect the thermostat housing and read the technical information on it, which indicates at what temperature it should switch; Hang the thermostat in the pan so that it is immersed in water, but does not touch the walls and bottom of the container, that is, it comes into contact only with water; Start heating the water and put a regular thermometer in it to measure the temperature of the liquid; When the water approaches the thermostat switching value from closed to open, make sure this happens. Also compare the thermometer reading, recording the temperature at which the coolant circuit switching valve opens with the ideal values indicated on the device body.

If the valve opens when heating water, track its behavior when cooling the liquid, checking at what temperature it returns to its original position. Based on the data obtained, draw a conclusion about the functionality of the thermostat.

Signs of thermostat malfunctions and diagnostics

During operation, the thermostat valve is subject to operational and temperature loads, that is, it can fail for many reasons. Among the main ones:

  • low-quality or used coolant (antifreeze);
  • mechanical or corrosive wear of the valve drive, etc.

A thermostat malfunction can be determined by the following symptoms:

  • The internal combustion engine of the car, without being subjected to special loads, overheats - the thermostat thermocouple has ceased to perform its functions. If everything is normal with the cooling fan, to check, dismantle the thermostat and check the functionality of the valve;

To check the thermostat on a VAZ 2110, you can use several methods, since there are several methods for diagnosing the thermostat for failure:

  • Start the car and warm up the engine to the desired temperature, first opening the hood. Find the lower pipe coming from the thermostat and feel it for heat. If the thermostat is in good condition, the pipe will heat up quickly;
  • Dismantle the thermostat and remove from it the thermoelement responsible for starting the coolant circulation. Place the thermocouple in water heated to a temperature of 75 degrees and keep it until the water warms up further (up to 90 degrees). In good condition, when the water is heated to 90 degrees, the rod from the thermoelement should extend.

If problems are found with the operation of the thermostat, it needs to be replaced. By the way, when buying a new thermostat, you need to check it by blowing into the fitting (no air should escape). Also, some owners, before installation, immerse the new device in hot water for insurance, as described above. This eliminates the risk of installing a faulty device.

Narrowing of the bypass channel

If you decide that it is the bypass channel on the VAZ 2110 that needs to be adjusted, then the 6-hole thermostat should not have any problems. But with a 5-hole one, malfunctions may occur due to the fact that the cold pipe of the stove (outlet) will not be washed. Therefore, think about whether you need such a modification; maybe it’s better to immediately install a Granta thermostat or a six-hole one.

To reduce the bypass, you need to do the following:

  1. Cut a plate out of sheet aluminum so that it fits exactly inside the vehicle;
  2. Secure the plate with a rivet or cold welding, but so that the fastening does not interfere with the flow of coolant in a small circle;
  3. In this plate you need to drill a new hole of 5 or 6 mm (instead of the standard 8 mm);
  4. In addition to the steps described above, on a 6-hole heater, the stove return is connected to a thermostat.

After this modification, you will notice that the interior will warm up better and faster, but engine warming up will slow down somewhat.

Modification of the thermostat

On a VAZ 2110, it is quite possible to modify the thermostat by adding another hole to the 5-hole device. Why is this needed and what does it give?

  • In cars, in particular on the VAZ 2110, the injector becomes warmer with the advent of the sixth fitting due to the fact that the bypass channel decreases. For reference: a bypass is a pump for circulating liquid in a parallel pipeline;
  • For the stove to operate, it is necessary for the coolant to circulate in a small circle. This happens through the bypass channel. The smaller its diameter, the more liquid will flow through the stove;
  • An additional fitting, as a rule, prevents the heater return tee from leaking, since such malfunctions are not uncommon on “tens”.

An additional 8 mm hole is drilled in the body of the vehicle (thermostat). Install an additional pipe parallel to the same one going to the stove. It is needed so that the “waste” liquid from the heater enters the thermostat cavity, and there is no overcooling of the engine.

You also need a throttle washer - to increase the flow of fluid through the stove if the small circle is open, and an adjusting bolt resting on the leg of the element in order to regulate the opening temperature of the vehicle from the outside.

By the way, having modified it in this way, you can turn the carburetor TS 82, by drilling and tapping, into an injector suitable for the VAZ 2110.

  4. In addition to the steps described above, on a 6-hole heater, the stove return is connected to a thermostat.

After this modification, you will notice that the interior will warm up better and faster, but engine warming up will slow down somewhat.

Installation of a modified vehicle

On a VAZ 2110 you can easily install a more advanced thermostat from Granta 2190. But you should still know a little about the design of the heating/cooling system in Granta. Its scheme can be easily implemented on the “ten”.

  • Original TS Grants 2190 from BEHR;
  • The lower radiator hose is from Granta, but the upper one 21214 will also work, or simply matched to size;
  • Tee from VAZ 2110 for the cooling system;
  • The studs are 8 mm in length - like from the camshaft bed;
  • Straight long stove pipe from the “ten”;
  • Gasket for thermostat.

We act according to this plan:

  1. We change the lower radiator pipe to the one from Granta (or similar). You can leave the original one, but connect it to a suitable diameter at a right angle using a piece of pipe. However, remember - the more connections, the more opportunities for leaks;
  2. We connect the expansion tank pipe through a VAZ 2110 tee: one end goes to the drain from the heater radiator, the other end goes to the supply pipe;
  3. Drain the coolant;
  4. We change the studs to longer ones and install the Granta thermostat;
  5. We twist the temperature sensor.

Next comes a check to see if the modified heating system is working properly. Typically, the Grant vehicle is more stable, provides faster heating of the air in the cabin, and is not subject to temperature fluctuations.

We independently modify the VAZ 2110 thermostat or install a replacement

Many VAZ 2110 owners are dissatisfied with the performance of their car's heater. It would seem that the interior has already been insulated, no cold air is coming in from outside, the stove seems to be working, but it is still cold in the cabin.

Therefore, auto craftsmen come to the conclusion that the original stove may be nothing, but modifying the thermostat on the VAZ 2110 will not be superfluous at all. Therefore, someone, having bought a new thermostat, even before installing it on the car, makes modifications: the circuit on the 5-hole one is redone, making it 6-hole.

Factory thermostat

Others believe that it is enough to narrow the canal bypass. Third, it is much better to install a Granta thermostat, since it completely shuts off a large circle of coolant and, accordingly, the heater begins to supply hot air to the cabin much faster.

Let's consider all the options, but first you need to check whether the thermostat is to blame for the fact that there is clearly not enough heat in the cabin.

How to identify a malfunction

You can determine whether the VAZ-2110 thermostat needs to be replaced on your own.

To do this, start and warm up the car engine to operating temperature at idle speed. Next, in the engine compartment, find the radiator pipes. Touch them. If the device is working, they should both be hot. This is evidence that the coolant circulates freely in the system.

If one of them turns out to be cold, it means that the valve did not open and the thermostat did not work. But this does not mean that it needs to be changed immediately. For the VAZ-2110, replacement of the thermostat will be required only if its entire structure turns out to be unsuitable for further operation. In other cases, you can get by with repairing it.

How to Install a New Thermostat

If the best device for the VAZ-2110 has already been purchased, it’s time to start installation, especially since you can carry out the procedure yourself. You will need:

  • gasket former - cost about 300 rubles;
  • Cooling system cleaner – 150 rubles;
  • pipes going to the stove radiator - 230 rubles;
  • thermostat (in our case it’s Pramo) – 12,000 rubles;
  • green antifreeze with a volume of 10 liters - up to 900 rubles;
  • hairpin M8 at 70 m.

First you need to drain the used antifreeze. Place a 7-liter container under the drain hole and wait until the liquid is completely drained into the container. After this, you should clean the cooling system; for this it is best to use a special cleaning agent. Acids, soda and vinegar do not give such a good result, and lactic acid can ruin the internal parts of the car.

Ways to check functionality

The engine cooling system uses a thermostat to quickly warm up and then maintain operating temperature. After a cold start, the thermostat valve shuts off coolant flow to the main radiator. The engine warms up much faster, since antifreeze circulates only in the “jacket” (small coolant circulation circle). A sensitive element is installed in the thermostat housing, which expands in volume during the heating process, forcing the main valve to move and open coolant access to the main radiator. Antifreeze begins to circulate in a large circle, thereby cooling the engine.

  • According to the degree of heating of the outlet pipe going to the radiator. Before the coolant reaches the opening temperature, which on most cars is between 80-90 degrees Celsius (at 95-105ºC the valve opens completely), the pipe must be cold. If it warms up almost immediately after starting the engine, the thermostat is stuck in the open position, and the coolant is constantly circulating in a large circle. When the thermostat is stuck closed, the hose will be relatively cold even when the engine is fully warmed up. The situation is extremely dangerous, as you risk losing a large sum while eliminating the consequences of engine overheating.
  • Carry out a test by placing it in a heated liquid. Below we will describe in detail how to fairly accurately check the thermostat at home.

Is it worth checking without removing it from the car?

The advantage of diagnostics based on the degree of heating of the pipe is that you can check the thermostat without removing it from the car. But unlike the test at home, the method does not allow you to accurately estimate the opening temperature and response speed.

By controlling the degree of heating of the liquid, you can simulate changing the cooling and warming up modes of the engine several times in a row. The tricky thing about faults is that they can manifest themselves periodically. Therefore, if there are serious suspicions that the thermostat is not working properly, we recommend checking it only with a test at home.

Thermostat failure

Like any other device, the thermostat on a VAZ 2110 car has its own signs of malfunction. In particular, if it fails, the operating temperature of the engine increases significantly

Please note that on VAZ cars, after the temperature-sensitive element breaks down, the valve moves to a position in which the liquid circulates in a smaller circle

In other words, it does not enter the radiator. If this happened in the summer, then you will not see anything pleasant in such a breakdown. The most effective way to slightly cool the engine is to open the heater and turn on the blower fan at maximum speed.

Moreover, the engine will overheat not only while driving through a populated area at low speeds, but also when driving at higher speeds, when it would seem that the entire engine compartment is being blown in an increased mode.

But if you experience such symptoms on a VAZ 2110, you should not immediately blame the thermostat. It is quite possible that you have confused the failure of the fan switch sensor and the thermostat itself. On fuel-injected cars, the temperature in the thermostat housing is measured (the photo shows the location of the temperature sensor).

The electronic control unit, as well as the device in the panel in front of the driver, receives a signal from it. If the car’s fan operation is controlled through an electronic control unit, then the above-described circuit works. But on old VAZ 2110 and similar cars, a second sensor is used, which only works with the fan.

It is located in the cooling radiator housing. As a rule, it is connected to the negative power circuit without any switching devices, for example, an electromagnetic relay. As a result, the contacts inside the sensor burn and premature failure occurs.

Types of thermostats

The VAZ 2106 car was produced for many years. And during this time, engineers made a number of changes to it, including thermostats. Let's look at what thermostats were installed on the VAZ 2106 from the release of the first cars to the present day.

Single valve thermostat

Single-valve thermostats were installed on the very first “sixes” that rolled off the VAZ assembly line. The operating principle of this device has been described in detail above. To date, these devices are considered obsolete, and finding them on sale is not so easy.

The first “sixes” were equipped with the simplest, single-valve thermostats

Electronic thermostat

An electronic thermostat is the latest and most advanced modification that replaced single-valve devices. Its main advantages are high accuracy and reliability. Electronic thermostats have two operating modes: automatic and manual.

Electronic thermostats are used in modern cooling systems and differ from their predecessors in high accuracy and much greater reliability

Liquid thermostat

Thermostats are classified not only by design, but also by the type of fillers. Liquid thermostats were the very first to appear. The main component of a liquid thermostat is a small brass cylinder filled with distilled water and alcohol. The operating principle of this device is the same as that of the wax-filled thermostats discussed above.

Solid thermostat

The filler in such thermostats is ceresin. This is a substance similar in consistency to regular wax, which is mixed with copper powder and placed in a copper container. The cylinder has a rubber membrane connected to a rod, also made of dense rubber that is resistant to high temperatures. Ceresin, expanded from heating, presses on the membrane, which, in turn, acts on the rod and valve, ensuring the circulation of antifreeze.

The main element of a solid-fill thermostat is a container with ceresite and copper powder

Which thermostat is better

Today, thermostats based on solid fillers are considered the best option for the VAZ 2106, since they have the optimal combination of price and quality. In addition, they can be found in any auto store, unlike liquid single-valve ones, which are practically no longer on sale.

Purpose of the thermostat on the VAZ 2106

The thermostat must control the degree of heating of the coolant and react in a timely manner when the antifreeze temperature becomes too high or, conversely, too low.

The thermostat maintains the temperature of the coolant in the engine cooling system in the desired range

The device can direct coolant through either a small or large cooling circle, thereby preventing the engine from overheating, or, conversely, helping it quickly warm up after a long period of inactivity. All this makes the thermostat the most important element of the VAZ 2106 cooling system.

Thermostat location

The thermostat in the VAZ 2106 is located to the right of the engine, where the pipes for discharging coolant from the main radiator are located. To see the thermostat, simply open the hood of the car. The convenient location of this part is a big plus when it becomes necessary to replace it.

To gain access to the VAZ 2106 thermostat, simply open the hood

Principle of operation

As mentioned above, the main task of the thermostat is to maintain the engine temperature within specified limits. When the engine needs to warm up, the thermostat blocks the main radiator until the engine reaches the optimal temperature. This simple measure can significantly extend the life of the engine and reduce wear on its components. The thermostat has a master valve. When the coolant reaches a temperature of 70 °C, the valve opens (it should be noted here that the opening temperature of the main valve can be higher - up to 90 °C, and this depends both on the design of the thermostat and on the thermal filler that is in it used).

Essentially, a thermostat is a regular valve that responds to changes in antifreeze temperature

The second important element of the thermostat is a special compression cylinder made of brass, inside of which there is a small piece of technical wax. When the antifreeze in the system reaches 80 °C, the wax in the cylinder melts. As it expands, it presses on the long rod connected to the main thermostat valve. The rod extends from the cylinder and opens the valve. And when the antifreeze cools, the wax in the cylinder begins to harden, and its expansion coefficient decreases. As a result, the pressure on the rod weakens and the thermostatic valve closes.

By opening the valve here we mean moving its leaf by only 0.1 mm. This is the initial opening value, which consistently increases by 0.1 mm as the antifreeze temperature rises by two to three degrees. When the coolant temperature rises by 20 °C, the thermostat valve opens fully. The full opening temperature can vary from 90 to 102 °C depending on the manufacturer and design of the thermostat.

The role of the thermostat in the engine cooling system

The engine cooling system is divided into two circuits: large and small. The small circuit encloses the internal elements of the engine and the heater radiator for heating the interior. The large circuit includes the small one, but in addition passes through the cooling radiator located in front of the engine. Thus, when the coolant temperature reaches a set level, the valve opens the flow into a large circuit and the antifreeze is cooled by oncoming air, entering the cooling radiator. If there is not enough oncoming air, the engine temperature sensor transmits a command to the control unit, which in turn turns on the cooling fan located in front of the radiator.

As soon as the air entering the radiator cools the liquid to a certain temperature, the valve closes and the antifreeze again flows through the small circuit. As a result, the engine temperature is maintained in operating condition.

SIGNS AND CONSEQUENCES OF A MALFUNCTION

What consequences should you prepare for if you failed to check the functionality of the thermostat in time?

  • Poor performance of the car interior heater. If the valve is stuck open, coolant constantly circulates through a large circuit. Cooling of the radiator by the flow of incoming air and a general increase in the surface area that gives off heat leads to constant underheating of the engine. Because of this, not only does the stove heat poorly, but also the power decreases and fuel consumption increases.
  • Motor overheating. A short-term excess of operating temperature can only lead to overheating of the piston rings, due to which their elasticity is lost. This will subsequently lead to loss of compression and increased oil consumption. Long-term operation in overheating mode is fraught with breakdown of the cylinder head gasket, thermal deformation of the cylinder head, loss of elasticity of the valve stem seals, and scuffing of the cylinder-piston group. As you understand, it is much easier to check the thermostat yourself than to pay for a major engine repair. If the cap of the expansion tank is faulty or cannot cope with the increased pressure in the cooling system, the tank may crack and the integrity of the radiator will be compromised in previously damaged areas.

How to check if the thermostat is working on a VAZ 2110

Checking and replacing the VAZ thermostat of the tenth family

The redistribution of fluid flows in the engine cooling system is controlled by a thermostat. Over time, the thermostat valve may jam on a large or small circulation circle, and the cooling system will not work correctly (engine overheating/underheating). How difficult is it to check and change the thermostat yourself?
Checking the Thermostat

To check the thermostat, lower it into a vessel with coolant, heat the vessel and use a thermometer to control the beginning of the opening of the main valve.

At a temperature of 87±2°C, the thermostat bypass valve begins to move, opening the main pipe; in this case, part of the liquid circulates in a large circle through the radiator. At a temperature of about 102°C, the pipe opens completely and all the liquid circulates in a large circle. The stroke of the main valve must be at least 8 mm. The thermostat of the VAZ-2112 engine has an increased resistance of the bypass valve (throttle hole), which increases the flow of fluid through the heater radiator.

When checking the thermostat on a car after starting a cold engine, the radiator outlet (lower) hose should remain cold for a while and then quickly warm up, indicating the start of coolant circulation in a large circle.

Checking the thermostat in the store is very simple, just blow into the thermostat fitting. Thus, we will check how tightly the small circuit is closed when cold.

  1. Loosen the radiator outlet hose clamps.
  2. Loosen the clamps of the supply hose of the pump pipe and the hose connecting the thermostat to the outlet pipe.
  3. Remove thermostat.

Stories from our readers

“Fucking basin. "

Hi all! My name is Mikhail, now I’ll tell you a story about how I managed to exchange my two-wheeler for a 2010 Camry. It all started with the fact that I began to be wildly irritated by the breakdowns of the two-wheeler, it seemed like nothing serious was broken, but damn it, there were so many little things that really started to irritate me. This is where the idea arose that it was time to change the car to a foreign car. The choice fell on the melting Camry of the tenth years.

Yes, I had matured morally, but financially I just couldn’t handle it. I’ll say right away that I am against loans and taking a car, especially not a new one, on credit is unreasonable. My salary is 24k a month, so collecting 600-700 thousand is almost impossible for me. I started looking for different ways to make money on the Internet. You can’t imagine how many scams there are, what I haven’t tried: sports betting, network marketing, and even the volcano casino, where I successfully lost about 10 thousand ((The only direction in which it seemed to me that I could make money was currency trading on the stock exchange, they call it Forex. But when I started delving into it, I realized that it was very difficult for me. I continued to dig further and came across binary options. The essence is the same as in Forex, but it’s much easier to understand. I started reading forums, studying trading strategies. I tried it on a demo account, then opened a real account. To be honest, I didn’t manage to start earning money right away, until I understood all the mechanics of options, I lost about 3,000 rubles, but as it turned out, it was a precious experience. Now I earn 5-7 thousand rubles a day. I managed to get the car buy after half a year, but in my opinion this is a good result, and it’s not about the car, my life has changed, I naturally quit my job, I have more free time for myself and my family. You can buy a thermostat for the VAZ 2110 in online stores. Its approximate price is from 300-450 rubles. depending on the model and manufacturer. If you do not change the thermostat assembly, but replace only its thermocouple, then you will be able to save about 200 rubles.

Another important point is to determine the quality of the thermostat in the store. To do this, blow into the thermostat fitting. Thus, we will check how tightly the small circuit is closed when cold. See also other ways to check and replace the thermostat.

Rating of the best thermostats for VAZ-2110

Lada 2110 Logbook Replacing the thermostat thermoelement of a VAZ 2110 An independent survey conducted for specialists repairing VAZ-2110s and their owners in 2022 showed which units are mostly trusted by drivers and auto mechanics. The top five were determined by analyzing responses to the questions:

  1. How long did the old model work in the VAZ-2110?
  2. Which manufacturer deserves more trust?
  3. Is it more profitable to change the thermostat completely or part by part, for example, just the thermocouple?

According to the survey, the first place among the surveyed VAZ-2110 drivers and specialists was taken by Luzar, with a large gap, 2nd place went to Luzar, 3rd place belonged to PRAMO TermoStato, followed by Electron and Fenox. Some respondents are inclined to believe that all thermostats are of the same quality; the main thing is not to purchase a fake.

As for a holeless or six-hole device, drivers still prefer the usual holeless one, and 10% do not see a significant difference.

The service life of the old model on the VAZ-2110 is on average in the range from 75,000 to 100,000 km. 15.4% of respondents managed to achieve mileage from 100,000 to 150,000 km; 9% of owners can boast of mileage from 150,000 to 200,000 km.

Prices for VAZ-2110 components

One of the features of VAZ-2110 cars is that it is extremely rare to completely replace thermostats on it. If desired, you can only get by by replacing the starting element, which will be somewhat cheaper. The price of an assembled thermostat ranges around 1,000 rubles, while its trigger mechanism can be purchased for 400.

Please note: this VAZ model produces two types of components (new and old). It’s not scary if your car previously had an old-style thermostat, and you purchased its updated version. In this case, you will need to cut off part of the pipe (leading from the pump) with a hacksaw and disconnect the piece from the old spare part

After this, it will be possible to install the unsuitable spare part into the vehicle's cooling system

Which one is better to choose as a replacement?

Experts do not advise experimenting with analogues, but using those components that AvtoVAZ develops directly for the VAZ 2110 model.

Although the company recommends using another technique - setting the thermostat from the VAZ 2111 to “ten”. Here is the answer to the question which thermostat for the VAZ 2110 is better.

The advantages of using an element from the eleventh model are manifested in the following:
