On August 16, 1967, a general agreement was signed in Moscow between the Italian company Fiat and the Soviet Foreign Trade on scientific and technical cooperation in the development of passenger cars. Within its framework, a project for the construction of an automobile plant on the territory of the USSR was approved. This agreement also determined the models themselves: two cars in the “norm” configuration with sedan (VAZ-2101) and station wagon (VAZ-2102) bodies, and a luxury car (VAZ-2103). The Fiat 124 was immediately identified as the prototype for the “norm”, which received the title “Car of the Year” in 1967.

In the summer of 1966, the first acquaintance of Soviet specialists with the Italian car took place. During tests on Soviet roads, the cars revealed serious problems with the durability of the body and rear disc brakes. The low ground clearance and lack of towing lugs made operating the vehicles on the country roads problematic. The dissatisfaction of Soviet engineers was also caused by the lower engine - absolutely unpromising from the point of view of further development of the design. All comments of Soviet specialists were taken into account by Italian designers [1].

The chassis and transmission have undergone no less serious changes. As a result, the VAZ-2101 began to differ from the Fiat 124 in brakes (drum mechanisms appeared at the rear, which can easily withstand bad roads), suspension (the front was strengthened, the rear was completely replaced with a more modern one with five reaction rods instead of a reaction pipe), cardan transmission (an open shaft with an intermediate support), reinforced clutch and modified design of synchronizers in the gearbox [1].

The first six VAZ-2101 cars were assembled on April 19, 1970, and the rhythmic work of the main conveyor began in August. Soon the production of the VAZ-2102 station wagon began. From 1972 to 1984, the “luxury” model VAZ-2103 was produced. In 1976, production of the improved VAZ-2106 model began [2]. The eighties were marked by the launch of production of models with a rectangular front design - VAZ-2105, VAZ-2104 and VAZ-2107 [1] [3].

On December 30, 2010, the VAZ-2105 was discontinued due to low demand from the entire classic VAZ family and almost complete unification with the VAZ-2107. On April 17, 2012, the IzhAvto plant stopped producing the VAZ-2107. The latest model of the Lada VAZ-2104 was discontinued on September 17, 2012.

The production of the VAZ-21074 model in Egypt from vehicle kits supplied by AvtoVAZ was fully completed at the beginning of 2014 [4].

The cruise control is a little tricky when turning it on and off, but on the highway it’s a useful thing - it gives your leg a rest. The rain sensor scared me at first when the windshield wipers started working on their own when sprayed with water from oncoming traffic, but I think that the thing is also useful. I have already bought my second Grant, only now a new one. I got normal brakes! On my first Grant, the travel was quite long before it set, and during the test drive of the luxury version there was a car with the same operating principle. Plus, in video reviews, people also noted this.

In general, this is still the same Granta with a normal engine by modern standards, with a good automatic transmission, which does not change a bunch of gears back and forth for the sake of some half-liter of savings, but is absolutely predictable and adequate on descents and ascents, with excellent dynamics for the city and maneuverability, which can be safely used, and not carefully moved, with a cool omnivorous suspension and decent ground clearance.

Externally, I quite liked the Granta FL. The front part of the body is without question at all: modern, beautiful and harmonious. From the side, of course, the situation is a little worse, but the calico roots cannot be avoided, just as the width/height disproportion is visible from the rear, however, after moving the GRZ to the trunk lid, the appearance became a little more harmonious.

• You can also choose a version with a sixteen-valve VAZ-21126 engine producing 98 horsepower (145 Nm). Only this unit comes in tandem with a four-speed Jatco automatic. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h is possible in 13.1 seconds, maximum speed is 176 kilometers per hour.
• The most powerful 16-valve engine VAZ-21127 develops 106 hp. and 148 Nm. This engine can work with either a five-speed manual or a robotic transmission. The version with a manual transmission is capable of accelerating from 0-100 km/h in 10.5 seconds, while the car with a robot is noticeably slower - 12.0 seconds. The maximum speed in both cases is 184 km/h.

The Lada Grant sedan cannot be called frisky, and it has absolutely nothing to provoke the driver to drive fast. The lack of dynamics is especially felt in the version with a 98-horsepower engine with an automatic transmission. This modification picks up speed well only up to 40 km/h, after which the speedometer needle creeps up extremely slowly, and dynamics appear only during kickdowns.

Feedback on the steering wheel of the model is slightly sluggish, and the car turns at speed with slight rolls. Certain questions also arise regarding the braking process: the pedal is too soft, and the pickup begins to be felt only after 40% of the pressure.

However, the Granta is not a sports car to require anything more from it, and for a car of its class it handles well. At the same time, the main advantage of the model is the practically impenetrable suspension, which ensures a very smooth ride even on broken and undulating surfaces.

The front seats in the new Lada Granta 2022 after restyling began to please the eye, but not everyone will like the seating itself. The seat back is quite high and comfortable, and the cushion could be longer. In addition, the updated cars use slightly stiffer padding, which is why on a long journey the desire to get out and stretch will appear more often than on an old-style car.
