Repair of VAZ 2108: automatic replacement of the ignition switch

In fact, the ignition switch is a regular switch that closes or opens certain groups of contacts. VAZ 2109 - removing and replacing the clutch cable |, A faulty ignition switch will increase the already huge likelihood of your car being stolen, and will also create huge problems for you and, as a rule, at the most inopportune moment for this.

Typically, replacing the VAZ 2108 ignition switch is carried out in the following cases:

  1. When they tried to steal the car, the ignition was damaged;
  2. If the car owner loses the key;
  3. When the contact group fails.

The car may not start due to terrible contact. It’s easy to check; all you need is an ohmmeter and a couple of minutes of time.

Replacing the lock cylinder or contact group

The need to completely replace the VAZ 2108 ignition switch may only arise in the event of the above problems, but if the cause of the malfunction is one of its parts, then it makes sense to carry out a partial repair of the ignition switch. PURPOSE AND DEVICE

The main purpose of the lock was initially to protect the car from theft, however:

  • Today, as can be seen from practice, in order to start and steal a car, car thieves do not necessarily need to have a key or a duplicate of it
  • To put it more clearly, the protection from the castle used to justify itself, but today it is “so-so”
  • Advanced car thieves, equipped with modern technologies and devices, are able to hack the electronic protection of the most modern anti-theft systems in just a few seconds.
  • And on the VAZ 2109, the lock cylinder or the VAZ 2109 lock itself, or its domestic analogue can generally be called entertainment for beginners
  • In fact, the ignition switch is an ordinary switch that, when you turn the key, opens or closes a certain group of contacts
  • The appearance of a malfunction in the ignition switch increases the likelihood of vehicle theft several times, in addition, it creates great trouble for you and, according to the law of meanness, at a completely inappropriate moment for this
  • The design of any ignition switch is similar; it consists of a lock and its contact group
  • And the contact group consists of two separate plates, fixed and movable
  • The movable plate moves when the key is turned in the lock and the contacts are closed in the required sequence
  • Already now, switches that have the same design and order of contact closure are successfully used on all domestic cars

Reasons for replacement

As a rule, replacement of VAZ 2109 lock cylinders is carried out in the following cases:

  • When they tried to steal a car and the lock cylinder was damaged in the process
  • If the owner of the car has lost his keys
  • Breakage of the larva during operation

The car engine may not start due to poor contact. It’s not at all difficult to check this; to do this, it’s enough to have an ohmmeter on hand, or a multitester with an ohmmeter function and five minutes of time:

  • Disconnect the “-” terminal from the battery
  • Remove the lower casing from the steering column

Removed the casing and opened the contacts

  • Disconnect the contacts and check the resistance with an ohmmeter
  • Serviceable contacts should have minimal (zero) resistance
  • Otherwise, you need to replace either the contact group or the entire lock

Ignition replacement and check

To replace the ignition switch, you need to perform all the steps in a certain sequence:

  1. Before replacing, you must remove the negative terminal from the battery.
  2. Remove the steering column cover and the two switches located under the steering wheel.
  3. After this, you need to insert the key into the ignition switch and set it to the zero position. This is necessary for the anti-theft device to be disabled.
  4. Next, unscrew the 4 bolts that hold the ignition switch. If bolts with sheared heads are installed, knock them down using a hammer and chisel.
  5. After unscrewing (knocking down) the bolts, remove them from the holes using pliers.
  6. On the left side, remove the bracket, and then on the right side, remove the ignition switch.
  7. Then disconnect the wire block from the electrical connector.
  8. Get under the dashboard and disconnect the ignition switch connectors from the relay.

Installing a new lock must be done step by step in reverse order.

To check the contacts on the wire block, use an ohmmeter. The device must display zero. If his readings are different, change the contact group.

To change a contact group, you need to do the following:

  1. Using a screwdriver, unscrew the screw that secures the cover.
  2. Bend back the plastic latches that hold the cover in place, then remove it.
  3. Remove the contact group.

The contact group is also installed in the reverse order.

Not in all cases it will be possible to find four bolts on the steering column on a VAZ-2109. On some models it can be secured with two bolts and a hook.

Replacing the contact group of the ignition switch VAZ 2108

From a financial point of view, replacing a contact group is the least expensive. Basically, as in the previous case with the lock cylinder, you will need to remove the lock and the cover. Replacing the ignition switch on a VAZ 2101-VAZ 2107. To avoid problems associated with confusing contacts, I recommend numbering or somehow marking the wires into which it was connected, this will save time and nerves. Some lock models have a retaining ring in the contact group; you will need an awl to remove it. When finished, be sure to reinstall the safety ring.

Repair and replacement instructions

Basically, the protection zone can be repaired. Repair usually consists of replacing the core or contact group. If the problem remains after repair, then the ignition switch needs to be replaced.

Core of ZZ VAZ 2109

On a VAZ 2109, replacing the core consists of the following steps:

  1. First, the protective and decorative cover is removed from the steering column, as well as the windshield washer and turn switches.
  2. The lock is secured with screws and a hook latch. There may be problems with unscrewing the screws, since their heads are cut off. To remove them, you first need to loosen them with chisels and then unscrew them with pliers. You can carefully drill out the screws.
  3. Next, we disconnect the clamps, disengaging them.
  4. By pulling out the side pin, you can remove the core. If that doesn’t work, the core can be drilled out using a thin drill. In extreme cases, you will have to dismantle the entire assembly.
  5. The next step is to disconnect the connector, wire plug, and ground wire.
  6. By releasing the latch, you can remove the cover and contact group.
  7. We insert a new core and check the work. When you turn the key, all processes should work.

The steering wheel lock should also be checked. If the steering wheel does not lock when turned fully, you need to adjust the position of the lock on the column.

Contact group ZZ

Replacing the contact group of the VAZ ignition switch comes down to dismantling the ignition switch: the removal diagram is described above.

When performing the procedure, the following recommendations should be followed:

  • before disconnecting contacts, it is advisable to assign numbers to them, this will help to avoid errors when connecting;
  • If there is a retaining ring in the design of the contact group, you must first remove it using an awl.

Knowing how the ignition switch on a VAZ 2109 works, and having at least a little experience, you can carry out the repair yourself without resorting to the help of specialists. This way you can save on maintenance costs.

Self-replacement of the ignition switch of a VAZ 2108

  1. For this work, you need to use special bolts with break-away heads; I do not recommend using M6 twenty mm instead, since in this case it will be easier not only for you, but also for car thieves to remove the ignition key.
  2. Using a chisel, you need to unscrew or knock down the bolts.
  1. Before replacing the lock, turn the key to the “I” position so that the latch that locks the steering shaft mechanism can enter the lock body.
  2. Now that nothing is in the way, you can begin installing the new ignition switch.
  3. Install it onto the steering column, secure it with the bracket, then tighten the frame with new mounting bolts.
  4. After installation, do not forget to make sure that the steering shaft locking mechanism is working properly; if the mechanism does not work, after one full turn of the steering wheel, you need to adjust the position of the ignition switch on the steering column.
  5. After completing the position adjustment and checking the operation of the locking mechanism, tighten the bolts until the heads are completely disconnected, to do this, use a “10” wrench.

We start the engine, make sure that it is working properly and there are no problems with starting, if everything is in order, we conclude that replacing the VAZ 2108 ignition switch with your own hands was a success!

Ignition switch VAZ 2109 faults

The ignition switch of the VAZ 2109 is a very important and at the same time very capricious mechanism of the car. And in today’s article we will try to highlight its importance and capriciousness, that is, malfunction. The ignition switch serves to supply voltage to electrical circuits depending on the position of the key. The castle consists of 2 parts. These are the mechanical and electrical parts.

As already written, in our nine the power switch is a very important mechanism. Almost the entire electrical part of the car passes through it. Only a few devices can operate without an ignition switch, namely:

1. Side lights.

2. Emergency alarm.

3. Interior lighting.

5. Illuminated license plate.

This is necessary so that when stopping on the highway or in the city in an unlit place, we do not need to turn on the ignition to be noticed.

Device

On the VAZ-2109 you can find the ignition of a new, as well as an old model.
Older models have 4 positions, a long key and a relay. The new ones have 3 positions and a short key, but there is no relay at all. The ignition switch in the VAZ-2109, as well as in other cars, is designed to perform two functions: to lock the steering column (mechanical) and to close contacts when turning the key (electrical). The electrical part works depending on the turn of the key:

  • car de-energized – 0;
  • voltage supplied to the entire electrical network – 1;
  • supplying current only to the starter – 2;
  • turning on emergency lighting.

Lighting units on the VAZ 2109 can be of different designs. There are 2 samples, this is new and old. The new one differs from the old one only in the absence of a relay, a shortened key and three key positions instead of four.

1. Ignition relay

2. Ignition switch connector

3. Power switch.

What is

First, let's look at the structure of the castle. Let's find out what it looks like, what it consists of, what its operating principle is, and so on:

  • As mentioned, the ignition switch is a very important element of the VAZ 2109 car, because almost all available equipment is connected to it.

Note. Although there are components that do not depend on the lock in any way. Here they are: license plate lights, brake lights, parking lights, hazard lights, interior lights and lights on the dashboard.

  • There are different types of ignition switches: new or old type. The first version without a relay has three positions and a short key, the second with a relay has four positions and a long key.

VAZ 2109 ignition switch malfunction

The ignition switch of the VAZ 2109 is faulty.

The most common problem with the lock when turned on is that it trips and jams. With such signs, it is necessary to immediately change the entire ignition switch, because if it jams, you can simply burn the starter, and then the repair will cost you the price of the starter. Another common problem is contact group failure. In this case, several devices fail at the same time. For example, the low beam headlights, heater, cigarette lighter, and rear window heater immediately stopped working. I replaced the contact group with a new one, everything worked immediately.

Load of wires and contacts of the lock

Red

the wire (pin 5) powers the coil of the additional starter relay and gives a signal to the BSK. ATTENTION: in LADA Samara-2, power is supplied to the starter directly, without an additional relay!

Black

the wire (pin 2) powers the “dimensions”, the engine compartment lamp, the relay coils for the fog lights and high beams, the license plate illumination, the on-board computer, the button and instrument panel illumination.

Blue

wire (pin 4) is the most loaded. It powers the heater fan, rear fog lights, rear window and headlight wipers, relay coils for headlight wipers and heated rear window, low and high beams, and glove compartment lighting. This wire is disconnected when the starter is turned on (position 2 of the lock).

Pink

connects the black, blue and red wires, therefore the load on it is summed up.

Design and troubleshooting of the ignition switch of the VAZ 2109

One of the key components of the VAZ 2109 car is the ignition switch. In the electrical circuit of a machine, it is used as a switching unit to supply voltage to the necessary power circuits. If this does not happen due to a malfunction of the switch, it is possible that individual groups of consumers or the car as a whole can be turned off - it simply does not start.

Typical faults

Since the ignition switch on the VAZ 2109 performs two functions, the nature of the faults can be divided into mechanical and electrical, although most often the lock breaks down in starter mode:

  1. A mechanical malfunction includes jamming of the core in any position: it is physically impossible to turn the key. In this case, you can inject a little silicone lubricant inside. If this does not help, you will have to remove the ignition switch and replace it with a new one.
  2. Electrical faults can occur at a certain position of the key when the integrity of the electrical network in the switch is broken. If there is no contact, all system components will not work. If there is contact, but the circuit does not occur where it is needed, this is fraught with a short circuit and overheating of the circuit breaker. It may melt and a specific smell will appear (video author - MAQS MAC).

Design and principle of operation of the lock assembly

It is possible to install 2 standard modifications of the lock on the VAZ 2109 car. The old one has catalog number 21080-3704005-60. It features four (long) key positions and also contains an ignition relay. The new assembly with catalog number 21080-3704005-30 has only three key positions and does not contain a relay.

To connect all the cables to the lock of the VAZ 2109 car, a contact group is used. Each of the key positions has its own setting, which means there is a group of consumers.

Contacts “30” and “30/1” are closed. All dependent power circuits are disabled.

In this position, voltage is supplied to the elements of the ignition control system. To do this, the white thread is closed with brown, and the pink thread with black and blue. In this case, several groups of contacts are formed. For example, "30 INT" activates the external power circuit including high beam, lighting, instrument panel lighting. Contacts “30/1” and “15/1” supply voltage to the turn signal lamps, reverse gear lamps, elements of the ignition system, etc. The “30/1”, “15/2” pair powers the low/high beam headlights, fog lights, washing machine, fans.

The ignition relay installed in the previous step continues to operate. The main one is a pair of contacts “30”, “50”, which supplies voltage to the starter. In parallel with this, chains of contact connections “30/1”, “15/1”, as well as “30/1”, “15/2” should be formed. The utilities connected in this case are similar to those described for position “I”. The pink wire in the contact pair, together with the black one, is shorted to red (instead of blue).

It is used to supply voltage to the parking system components ("30/1 R") and the parking/instrument lights ("30 INT"). The black wire, together with the brown and pink wires, forms a closed circuit.

The lock and its circuitry perform two functions: electrical and mechanical. The essence of the first is to close certain groups of contacts based on the location of the key. From a mechanical point of view, when the ignition is turned off, the steering wheel is locked, making rotation impossible. That is, the second function is protective.

Possible malfunctions and ways to eliminate them

The nature of the malfunction of the locking unit on a VAZ 2109 car can also be electrical or mechanical.

The first group includes violations of the integrity of electrical circuits in the switch at a certain key position. If there is no contact, the connected consumers may not work or the car may not start at all. If there is contact, but the wrong sections of the circuit are closed as expected, this is fraught with a short circuit and thermal damage to the lock. It will begin to melt and a characteristic smell will appear. Depending on the severity of the disaster, the contact group will most likely need to be replaced.

From a mechanical point of view, the core/larva can get stuck in any position. In this case, it will be physically impossible to turn the key in the lock. The only correct repair option is to replace the entire assembly.

To diagnose faults in electrical circuits, you need to stock up on the following tools.

  1. Multimeter or tester. If it is not available, as an option you can use a control lamp operating on a voltage of 12 V.
  2. A set of screwdrivers, keys for disassembling the lock. Since the only option for resolving mechanical problems is to replace failed parts, they will come in handy in this case.

Before starting diagnostics, it will be necessary to disconnect the terminal block and make all contacts ring in the sequence that corresponds to each of the key positions. For clarity, you should have an electrical diagram of the unit at hand. If the circuit is closed, the meter will show a resistance reading.

Replacing the lock should begin with de-energizing. To do this, you will need to loosen the locking nut and remove the negative battery terminal. After this, the protective and decorative casing and the rotary washers are removed. The steering column lock is secured with four screws or two screws and a latch. Removal may be difficult due to screws. In this case, they will need to be cut or drilled, doing everything with extreme caution. The terminal block is disconnected and the disassembly process is complete.

Assembling a new lock is similar, but in reverse order.

Malfunctions

Considering that the ignition switch is designed to perform two functions, all breakdowns are divided into mechanical and electrical. Mechanical malfunctions include jamming of the cylinder in one of the positions when it is impossible to turn the key. Contact group, which is time to change when the car engine does not start when you turn the key or deformation has occurred.

Electrical faults can occur in any position of the key, as they are associated with a violation of the integrity of the electrical network.

In a situation where there is no contact, all components of the system do not function. If there is a contact in the wrong place, a short circuit and overheating will occur, which will lead to the need to install a new lock.
