How to make sound insulation for a VAZ-2109 car with your own hands

The VAZ 2109 is one of the most popular cars in our country, and it is not without reason that the common people have received the nickname “rattle”. When driving on bad roads, the level of extraneous noise in the interior of the Nine is excessive, which is explained by the almost complete absence of factory sound insulation. The problem is also aggravated by plastic elements of the interior that do not fit well together - the dashboard, trunk shelves, door panels.

This article examines in detail the sound insulation of the VAZ 2109. We offer instructions, following which you can perform noise insulation of the nine yourself, without resorting to the services of specialized specialists and thereby saving your own finances.

Sources of noise

All noises inside the car belong to one of five groups, depending on the sound source:

  1. External sources. Sounds are generated from outside the vehicle and are created by other road users. This is the noise of engines, the rustle of wheels, the signals of horns. Sounds can come from pedestrians - conversations, radio broadcasts, exclamations. These can be sounds of nature or man-made noise.
  2. The car makes noise when it comes into contact with the road. These sounds are highly dependent on the road surface and speed of travel. They come to the ears of the driver and passengers in different ways. The first way is by air and through windows and body panels. The second is through suspension elements and other parts of the vehicle structure.
  3. The sounds when the car comes into contact with the atmosphere depend on the speed. They are generated by the body itself in interaction with the incoming air flow. They strongly depend on the streamlining of the body, the presence of cracks and non-standard elements of body tuning.
  4. There are sources of noise inside the car, but not in the cabin. This is the sound of a running engine, roars and pops in the exhaust manifold and muffler, knocks in the suspension.
  5. Sources in the car interior include the creaking of the dashboard, the rumble of spare parts and tools scattered in the trunk. The sound of the radio, finally.

The fight against sounds of different groups has a fundamentally different nature, requires specific techniques and has varying degrees of relevance for your VAZ 2109.

Beautiful modifications to the VAZ 2109 panel

Every driver of a domestic car wants to make the instrument panel of his VAZ-2109 as bright and original as possible. Here is one of the options for how beautifully you can modify this element of the machine.

You will need a soldering iron. Next you need to buy numbers and a scale panel. It is important that they are translucent from the inside. You should also purchase an ultraviolet lamp. It is powered by 12 volts. Therefore, nothing needs to be changed.

You will also need a fluorescent marker or paint. It will change color if exposed to ultraviolet light. This technique is often used in modern nightclubs. You will also need ordinary light bulbs with sockets, like those in the “tidy”. There is no need to change the LEDs; they will remain in place. Everything you need is there, you can get started.

First you need to remove the plastic, then the dashboard. Also, don't forget about the black plastic that surrounds the glass. We disassemble the standard insert, as well as the arrows. Most often, there are no holes in the new insert. Therefore, you will have to do them. For the arrows, the holes will be needed wider than in the standard trim. Otherwise, the arrows will start to stick.

Next you need to dismantle the lighting that is installed. The work should be done carefully so that the plastic is not damaged. We take out the board with the light bulbs. We install a neon light bulb instead of the usual ones, and stick a plastic protection on top. It used to have factory bulbs screwed in. Don't forget about the control unit for the new neon light bulb. Be careful not to reverse the polarity at all times.

If this happens, nothing will shine. Next you need to screw in the instrument lighting bulbs. This should be done in parallel to the neon lamp. We lay the wiring from the inside; first, for this you need to make holes in the partitions.

Let's check if everything is correct. The light bulbs inside should be adjusted. Next we put on the overlay and seal it. After these steps, all we have to do is paint the hands with a purchased fluorescent marker or paint. It is advisable to repeat painting after 10 minutes. After this, the arrows can be installed in their place. This completes the tuning.

Check the work, otherwise you will have to disassemble everything. If there are no problems, you can assemble everything in strictly reverse order. After such tuning, the interior of the VAZ 2109 will be equipped with a colorful panel like good foreign cars. If desired, you can use fluorescent paint to paint the dashboard trim in the place where the needle reaches its limit. It looks very nice.

The futile struggle against external noise

The fight against external sounds is often stated as the main concern of car services. At service stations for the VAZ 2109, noise insulation is offered in greater or lesser volume. To make the car quieter, its roof is even covered with a thick layer of soundproofing material. In fact, such a wrap can only protect you from the sound of a helicopter flying over the roof of your car. The vast majority of other sounds - police sirens, special signals from ambulances and fire brigades, conversations of pedestrians, music from the open windows of other cars, the crackling of engines of passing motorcycles and much more - spreads almost parallel to your roof and does not excite its vibrations. All these sounds enter the interior of your car primarily through the windows, even if they are closed.

Is it worth mentioning that windows cannot be soundproofed simply because it is difficult to see through bitumen mastic. In addition, complete silence in the cabin is not only unnecessary, but even dangerous. If only because the driver must hear the signals of police and other special vehicles. Factory sound insulation provides sufficient audibility.

Bitoplast

This material is ideal for soundproofing the hood of the VAZ-2109. It consists of foam rubber, which is impregnated with bitumen. A layer of self-adhesive is applied on top. This material allows for fairly effective noise reduction - approximately 90%. And most importantly, it has high elasticity and shrinks almost to zero.

On sale you can find material with a thickness of 5 and 10 mm. It is recommended to use it for soundproofing the VAZ-2109 panel, as well as other plastic elements. But if the surface has a large area (for example, a ceiling), then even a thick centimeter-long material will not be enough. In this case, experts recommend using an analogue of bitoplast - Accent. It has a higher density and also has a layer of aluminum foil.

Sounds from contact with road and air

The sounds generated when the car comes into contact with the road are transmitted to the cabin not only, and even not so much through the air, but through structural elements - wheel hubs, shock absorbers, levers, and the car body. Pebbles flying out from under the wheels hit the fender liners or wheel arches, and the sound comes into the cabin through body vibration. Pasting the bottom with soundproofing material somewhat changes the frequency characteristics of sounds penetrating into the cabin, but their intensity changes slightly. It is important that such sounds are very informative. If there is significant noise of this kind, you should reduce your speed and, if possible, choose a more suitable section of the road for driving.

The noise that occurs when a car interacts with air does not occur mainly on large planes of the underbody, roof and doors. It is generated in cracks, loosely fitting joints, gaps that have expanded during the long-term operation of your VAZ 2109. Adding a layer of sound insulation has little effect on the level of these noises, especially considering the need to keep the windows slightly open in the summer when there is no air conditioning as standard on the car.

Typical for the VAZ 2109 is the noise created by the car itself outside the cabin. “Nine” is an old car. A decade and a half has passed since the release of the last series from AvtoVAZ. And like any old man, your VAZ 2109 groans and groans while driving. Something is rattling in the suspension, valves are knocking, the muffler is siphoning. Of course, you can try to isolate yourself from these grunts with soundproofing. But wouldn’t it be better to give the veteran proper care - stretch the suspension, adjust the valves, repair the muffler?

Pasting the engine shield with sound insulation does not solve most of the problems, does not muffle the sounds of the front and especially rear suspension, and does not interfere with the humming and growling of the muffler. Only the engine noise, which, when properly adjusted, usually does not irritate anyone, is somewhat reduced.

Sounds from the car interior

The situation is different with the noise generated in the cabin of your “nine”. They are the loudest and irritate the driver and passengers the most. Two sources of extraneous sounds in the cabin stand out most of all:

  • creaking of a torpedo, especially its high version;
  • noise from the rear shelf separating the trunk.

The dashboard of the VAZ 2109 almost always creaks. And the older the car gets, the more creaking it becomes. This is a drawback, the elimination of which significantly improves the performance properties of the machine. In addition, many car owners can do such work with their own hands. After disconnecting the terminals of the car radio and cigarette lighter, unscrew the 5 screws that secure the dashboard of the “nine”. Glue all contact points of plastic parts with self-adhesive anti-creak film. Since you have dismantled the panel, inspect the heater. Close the slots, tighten the clamps, adjust the damper. Reinstall the panel and the squeaks will disappear or be significantly reduced.

How to glue a panel on a VAZ 2109

After purchasing a VAZ 2109 car, it is imperative to make sound insulation. Cars older than 2-3 years rattle quite loudly. The loudest noise is created by the plastic front panel. It turns out that we will look in detail at the issue of gluing the front panel of the VAZ 2109.

Instructions

1. The base of the panel is attached to the body in 5 places. Two nuts need to be unscrewed on the sides, a self-tapping screw in the glove compartment and two nuts on the bottom of the panel. The fastening is done on the ears, which often break. If it breaks, it can be sealed with superglue. It will hold tight. However, the panel fastening still needs to be strengthened.

2. The panel can be attached to the stove using self-tapping screws. You can also try strengthening the ears with metal. The upper edge of the panel rests against the windshield seal, and lower against the reinforcing beam. The panel can be screwed to this beam. To do this, drill holes in the panel. It’s better to attach with three self-tapping screws 50 millimeters long. To prevent plastic breakage, large washers can be placed under the screws. All this must be sealed with sealant.

3. We are gluing the panel. First, pay attention to the part that is adjacent to the body. It must be covered with thin soundproofing material. We treat the lower areas from the inside with Visomat, and on top with bitoplast. Pay attention to the gaps that exist between the stove and the air ducts. They need to be filled with bitoplast.

4. For better thermal insulation, we cover the air duct covers with material. After this, we run a bitoplast strip about 15 millimeters wide along each edge. You can follow the factory sound insulation. It is a gray foam rubber. Don't forget to treat the instrument cluster with bitoplast.

5. We check the sound insulation of the air duct covers. When shaking, it should not make squeaks. More often than not, the squeak comes from the places where the fins that direct air to the windshield touch the panel trim. We glue a strip of bitoplast on them. You can also use black rag tape. Creaks are made mainly when the stove is on. This happens due to heating and stretching of plastic and plastic parts.

6. To glue the panel visor, you need to use Vizomat and bitoplast strips. Be sure to glue the steel latches that hook onto the trim with sealant. They make a lot of squeaking noises.

The level of extraneous noise forces action

VAZ 2109 sound insulation

If you leave the standard soundproofing of car interiors with the slang name “chisel” alone, then, again, the level of extraneous noise emitted by creaky plastic parts (there are a lot of them in the car) is so strong that it’s time to forget about installing expensive speaker systems. Everything creaks:

  • An instrument panel that, with special care, displays almost all frequencies audible to the human ear;
  • The trunk shelf does not lag behind it, creating in the rear part of the cabin something similar to a symphony, often sung by the wild inhabitants of swamps and forests.

Indeed, it seems that the interior items have come to life. Having completely lost hope and excluding the possibility of any smooth and melodic sound of music appearing in the cabin, the plastic components created their own orchestra in the “nine”.

Soundproofing VAZ 2109

Owners of such a car should not despair. Amateurs will not rule the show for long. It is enough to carry out only competent sound insulation, including treatment of various elements of the interior, and the result will not take long to arrive.

Features of the "nine"

Today, the “nine” has not lost its popularity - it is a pretty good alternative to old foreign cars, and it is much cheaper to maintain. Very often this car is used as a “platform” for installing music - a subwoofer, speakers. And the sound quality depends on how tightly all the casing elements are installed.

And with this, everything is bad in the VAZ-2109 - all elements made of plastic are fitted extremely poorly. Literally everything creaks and rattles - the trunk shelf, door panels and dashboard. And if you install even not very powerful speakers in the car, unpleasant extraneous sounds will constantly irritate your ears. It is unlikely that you will be able to achieve perfect sound.

Materials

It is the materials presented below that are destined to become the fatal killers of all extraneous noise:

  • Let's start with vibroplast - a material that resembles putty applied to a sheet of foil. Vibroplast is mainly used for processing bare metal surfaces.

Note. It is believed that to treat surfaces with vibroplast, they do not need to be heated. On the other hand, as experts advise, you still need to use a hairdryer so that the material adheres better to the surfaces. It is advisable to place sheets of material end-to-end, without overlap.

  • Vizomat is considered an equally popular material. Its appearance resembles linoleum. The material has an adhesive composition that will ideally connect the material with plastic parts. Let us remind you that there are many of them in the “nine”.

Note. Despite these properties, Vizomat can also be glued to metal surfaces, but they must be thoroughly degreased and heated in advance. However, compared to vibroplast, vizomat has disadvantages: it is more difficult for them to paste over complex reliefs. In addition, the visamat can simply “float” due to high temperature. On the other hand, it is easier to work with a visa machine.

  • Bitoplast, which is a foam rubber material with glue, impregnated with bitumen for reliability. Ideal for gluing the dashboard (see: Soundproofing a car's dashboard is always necessary) and other elements of the car. Easy and simple to apply;
  • "Foam" or polyurethane foam. A good material for not only noise but also thermal insulation. Practically does not absorb moisture. This foam is also called SPLEN if the thickness is 4 or 8 mm. This material is ideal for floor treatment, although it does not have its own adhesive composition;
  • The decor is also SPLEN material, only with an outer layer of dermantine. An ideal material for finishing the luggage compartment.

As for finishing the front of the engine compartment and the hood, ready-made kits are best suited for this. As a rule, they include the same materials: SPLEN, vibroplast, lipen and others.

Vizomat

This is a standard soundproofing material that has recently been used in cars such as Granta and Priora. The difference from the one discussed above is that the visomat has higher rigidity, so it covers the surface much better. Indeed, in some cases, soft materials can be pressed through (for example, in the trunk and on the floor). But rigidity is also a disadvantage of the material, since it is a little more difficult to work with.

Vizomat can be purchased on the market in the following series:

  1. PB with a thickness of 2 or 3.5 mm.
  2. MP (multilayer material with high strength).
  3. Q1 (material with increased elasticity).

Many car enthusiasts prefer Vizomat PB-3.5 materials. It has good characteristics (mechanical absorption coefficient 0.19), and most importantly, low cost.

Do-it-yourself procedure algorithm

Soundproofing for VAZ 2109

  • First of all, it will be necessary to disassemble the entire interior of the Nine, including seats, trim and dashboard.

Note. Some people recommend removing the heater and draining the coolant first. Just in case, it will be possible to modernize the stove by gluing the joints of the air ducts and adjusting the dampers correctly.

  • Next, you need to focus on the plugs that cover the holes in the underbody. Those that are in doubt must be replaced and sealed well. Otherwise, moisture entering the interior in rainy weather cannot be avoided.

Motor shield

Now we begin the actual “Shumka” process. It is recommended to start with the “nine” engine shield:

  • First of all, we wipe the surface with a rag, which we moisten in advance in a solvent or other degreaser;
  • We apply vibroplast. It is recommended to do this in two layers, remembering to heat the material so that it sticks better;
  • Then a layer of SPLEN is applied.

Soundproofing VAZ 2109

Soundproofing the VAZ 2109 is a mandatory procedure carried out on cars with the loud name “rattle”. Indeed, the level on cars of the AvtoVAZ family is so bad that you can’t dream of good sound inside the car. On the VAZ 2109, the standard sound insulation must be completely torn off, and new and modern materials that can significantly improve the acoustic characteristics are glued in its place.

Soundproofing doors

Before soundproofing the doors, you need to completely remove the factory anti-corrosion coating. Otherwise, it will not be possible to properly glue the insulating materials. Start with the outer walls. You need to stick Vibroplast Gold on them (it has better elasticity). Try to cover as much area as possible. It is worth noting that it is inconvenient to work with, since everything is limited by the size of the technological hole.

If speakers are installed in the doors, then Vibroplast can be glued around them. This will only improve the quality of the speaker system. But you shouldn’t completely fill the holes between the door walls, since Vibroplast absorbs moisture quite well. Splen must be glued to a vibration insulation layer. Afterwards, you can install a sheet of material over the entire area of the door, after which you cut a hole for the speaker.

Vibroplast

This material is based on a composition of bitumen and a thin layer of foil (usually aluminum). Vibroplast is ideal for soundproofing VAZ-2109 doors, hood, trunk, and floor. Its main function is to absorb vibration, but it also performs well as a sound-proofing material.

You can find two types of vibroplast on sale - “Gold” and “Silver”. The only difference is in thickness - for “Gold” it is 2.3 mm, and for “Silver” it is 0.3 mm less. As a result, these types of vibration absorbers have different weights - 3 and 4 kg, one square meter weighs. If it is necessary to treat a large surface area, then it would be more rational to use the Silver absorber. The reason, as you can guess, is the cost - if you use Gold, you will spend a lot of money, and it has slightly better efficiency.

Vibroplast is a self-adhesive material, but if you want to do all the work efficiently, you need to warm up the surface on which you plan to apply it. In this only case you will get the most durable contact of the material with the body element.

Tools

We've sorted out the materials. Now about what actual tools are needed to carry out the procedure:

  • A technical hair dryer, or a construction hair dryer, as it is also called, will be required. They will need to warm up the surfaces and adhesive composition of the materials before application;

  • The cutter is also technical, construction, special. This makes it very easy to cut materials - the tool is always sharp, because it has replaceable blades;
  • A special automotive glass scraper that needs to be wrapped in some thick cloth. We will use this homemade spatula to level the material after gluing.

Splen

It also belongs to universal soundproofing materials and is made of polyethylene foam. In addition, splen has very good thermal insulation properties. It has a closed cell structure, so it does not absorb liquid. It is convenient to work with the material, as it has a self-adhesive layer. On sale you can find two types of splen - with a thickness of 4 and 8 mm (their weight is 370 g and 600 g per square meter, respectively). Typically, splen is used to cover the partition of the engine compartment and wheel arches.

Plastic components and their finishing

There are a lot of plastic elements in the "nine"

Above was an algorithm of metal parts of a car, iron. Now about the processing of plastic elements. As mentioned, there are plenty of them in Samra. Started:

  • We use Vizomat, which is better to glue entirely;
  • In places where parts come into contact with each other, it is recommended to glue strips of bitoplast.

Note. You should know that correctly pasted parts should no longer make squeaks or any other extraneous sounds.

  • The pasting of plastic parts begins from the luggage compartment;
  • Remove all parts and linings;
  • We glue bitoplast to the joints, in the places between the floor and the rear pillar trim;
  • We process the plastic parts themselves with a visamat;
  • Don’t forget the rear shelf, fixing the material on it with tape;

Rear shelf "nine"

  • To prevent squeaks, it is recommended to lubricate the locks on the rear backrest of the chair;
  • Don’t forget to cover the inside of the racks with Vizomat material, either in strips or completely;
  • Next we move on to processing the instrument panel. First, we cover part of the torpedo with 4 mm foam. We are talking about the part of the torpedo that is in direct contact with the body.

Note. As for the lower parts of the dashboard, the shelf of the storage compartment and the areas for the speakers, as well as the sides of the front panel, it is better to cover them with Visomat and Bitoplast on top. Don’t forget to eliminate visible gaps: we pay special attention to the gaps that are located between the stove and the air ducts.

  • The visor of the instrument cluster also needs to be treated. In this case, we use a visamat;

  • Metal type latches should be treated with sealant to prevent them from rattling;
  • As for the beard, it is also better to treat it with Visomat and Bitoplast;
  • It is advisable to cover the inside of the glove compartment lid with visomat, and put a piece of carpet on the lower part, which is secured with double-sided tape.

Sound insulation of high panel VAZ 2109

At the end, we assemble the interior into place.

What should happen?

The result should be a completely covered floor and ceiling with two layers of insulation. If you have a limited amount of material, you can only cover the space between the stiffeners. Be sure to cover the wheel arches, the partition between the passenger compartment and the engine compartment, the tunnel under the muffler pipe, and the inside of the hood.

To soundproof the luggage compartment, it is best to use Decor rather than Spleen. This is almost the same material, only on top it is covered with a tougher leatherette. Therefore, such material can serve as interior trim for the trunk. All work is done in the same way as when finishing the ceiling. First, Vibroplast is glued on, then sound insulation.
