So, first of all, you need to know when to change the oil in the Duster box. Let's start with the fact that officially the gearbox on this model, both manual and automatic, is considered maintenance-free. In other words, according to Renault regulations, a scheduled oil change in the Duster gearbox is not expected, that is, the transmission oil is filled for the entire service life of the vehicle.
However, in practice, many owners note that already by 50-60 thousand km. the liquid in the box becomes dirty, partial loss of properties occurs, the box may work less clearly, noise appears, etc. It is quite obvious that the overall service life of the gearbox may be reduced if the lubricant in the gearbox is not changed for a long time.
Let us also add that it is also necessary to separately take into account the individual conditions under which a particular vehicle is operated. If frequent off-road driving is practiced, the load on the transmission and engine is high, the owner transports heavy loads or tows a trailer, then the service life of the oil in the box is further reduced (by 30-50%).
It is quite obvious that the 60 thousand km mark. can be considered the extreme point after which the oil needs to be changed. Also, the lubricant is often changed simultaneously with certain repair work (for example, if it is necessary to replace the drive seal). If we talk about the replacement itself, as a rule, the Duster version with manual transmission is much more common. Let's take a closer look at this.
- Renault Duster can have several types of gearboxes (JR5 and TL8 manual transmission and DP2 automatic transmission). The Renault Duster TL8 manual transmission is filled with 2.8 liters of oil. The recommended gear oil is ELF Tranself TRJ 75W-80 or ELF Tranself NFJ 75W-80.
The JR5 manual transmission has a filling volume of 2.5 liters, the recommended oil is ELF Tranself TRJ 75W-80 or ELF Tranself NFJ 75W-80. Let's add that the machine requires ATF fluid, which corresponds to APIGL-4 in class, viscosity according to SAE 75W-80. The manufacturer also recommends filling the transfer case and rear gearbox with ELF Tranself FE 80W-90. The oil volume in the rear gearbox is just over 0.5 liters, in the transfer case 0.38 liters.
Let's move on. During operation, you need to periodically check the transmission oil level in the gearbox. To check the oil in a Duster manual transmission, you need to unscrew the inspection hole plug.
Regardless of the type of car (Duster with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive), the level should be at the lower edge of the inspection hole. If the oil level in the box has dropped, you need to add the recommended product, avoiding mixing oils from different manufacturers.
How to change the oil in a Renault Duster box
If you need a complete oil change in a Renault Duster manual transmission, you need to do the following:
- First you need to warm up the gearbox (for this you will need to drive the car about 10 km).
- then you can drive the car into a viewing hole or lift it on a lift;
- Next, you should remove the protection, unscrew the drain plug using a square wrench (key 8), after placing a container under the hole to drain the waste;
- After the oil has been completely drained, the plug can be tightened with a torque of 20 Nm, while simultaneously replacing the sealing gasket.
- Then you need to unscrew the control hole plug; use a special syringe to fill the hole with oil recommended by the manufacturer to the bottom edge of the control hole.
- You can also use other options for gear oils instead of the original, but when choosing, it is important to select a fully suitable oil that meets all tolerances and recommendations; We also recommend reading the article on how to change the oil in a CVT gearbox. From this article you will learn how to change the oil in a CVT variator, as well as what you need to consider if you need to change the oil in the variator.
- After the oil has been filled and the control hole plug has been tightened, you should check the operation of the gearbox; the gears should engage clearly and smoothly.
- At the end of the test drive, you need to look under the car again to make sure there are no leaks from under the drain plug or inspection hole (to make this visual inspection easier, it is recommended that after tightening the plugs, before driving, wipe the areas around them with a clean rag, remove any oil stains and dirt ).
Replacement Regulations
So, when should you change the oil in the transfer case and rear axle of Renault Duster?
- When you reach a certain mileage on one replacement. Each car enthusiast will determine his own mileage limit.
- If traces of leaks are found on the bridge or transfer case. In this case, the fluid level may drop to a critical level and will have to be topped up or changed completely.
Oil selection
Before changing the oil and pouring new oil into the Renault Duster gearbox, you need to decide on the brand of lubricant. To find out which gearbox of a given car is filled, you need to pay attention to the contents of the service book or look at the official data.
As a rule, the manufacturer pours the following brands of gear oils into Renault manual transmissions: TL8 or TL4 - Tranself or GL-4. There must be a mark stating that this oil is transmission oil. In some cases, but best of all, GL-5 is used in the rear axle gearbox.
In addition to the above, you can fill in any other transmission lubricant that has the appropriate approval for a given car brand and is applicable for gearboxes of most modern cars, especially SUVs.
Required volume of liquid
The amount of oil poured into the Duster engine depends on the type of engine and the type of fuel on which it runs.
Type of fuel | Engine make | Motor index | Oil volume, l |
Petrol | F4R | 2.0 | 5.4 |
Petrol | K4M | 1.6 | 4.8 |
Automotive diesel | K9K | 1.5 | 4.5 |
To understand whether there is enough lubricant in the engine, you need to remove the dipstick with a bright orange handle from the oil container located near the front of the cylinder block and find the mini and maxi marks. If the liquid is between these marks, then there is enough lubrication in the motor.
Recommended oil manufacturers
To fill the transfer gear and rear axle crankcases (fluids are changed at the same time), it is recommended to use:
- for cars operated in the middle zone - TransELF Synthese FE 80W90;
- for cars traveling in northern regions - TransELF Synthese FE 75W90.
It is allowed to use fluids with similar viscosity parameters produced by Total (Transmission Dual 9 FE). Agip Rotra FE, Castrol Syntrans V FE, Motul Motylgear Technosynthese or Shell Spirax S6 GXME synthetic lubricants can be used. Since counterfeit technological fluids for cars are common on the market, it is recommended to buy gear oil at large retail outlets.
What tools will you need?
Depending on where you will change the oil in the manual transmission of a Renault Duster, you will need a different set of tools. If the work is carried out on an inspection hole or a lift, then you can simply use a tetrahedron that fits under the gearbox drain plug.
If the work is carried out without the use of special lifts, inspection pits or overpasses, then you can use a jack and safety stops to raise the car above ground level. This way, all work can be done while lying under the car with the greatest possible comfort.
The last prerequisite is to have an empty container for the old lubricant, since dumping it on the concrete floor of the garage or the ground is unacceptable. The fact is that lubricant is a product of oil processing, which is very toxic and has a negative impact on the environment. To avoid contamination, it is necessary to pour it into a container and close it tightly. In the future, it must be disposed of in accordance with all rules for the disposal of such petroleum products.
What's the result?
As you can see, in the case of Renault Duster, pouring oil into the manual transmission box is not particularly difficult. For this reason, this operation can be quite successfully carried out with your own hands in a regular garage (if there is an inspection hole). The procedure for checking the transmission oil level in the Duster box is also not complicated.
It is also important to understand that the official statement that the gearbox is maintenance-free (lubricant replacement is not expected according to the regulations) still cannot be considered a strong argument in favor of refusing to service the gearbox. If the owner intends to maximize the service life of the Duster gearbox, it is optimal to change the gear oil every 60 or maximum 80 thousand km. mileage
We also recommend reading the article on how to change the oil in a robot box. From this article you will learn how to change transmission oil in a robotic gearbox, as well as what you need to consider when changing the lubricant in units of this type.
Finally, we note that only regular and correctly performed oil changes in the gearbox using original recommended transmission fluids or high-quality analogues (and this applies to any car with different types of gearbox) can achieve high-quality operation of the gearbox and increase the service life of the unit.
In the case of a manual transmission, proper and precise operation of the transmission significantly affects the comfort of operating the vehicle, makes it easier to drive a vehicle with a manual transmission, increases safety, etc.
Renault Duster manual transmission oil
In accordance with the recommendations of the automaker, in cars with a manual transmission it is worth using ELF TRANSELF NFJ 75W80 gear oil. It has high fluidity at low temperatures, making it easier to shift gears in the cold, but still maintains sufficient viscosity at high temperatures.
A complex of special additives provides reliable protection of gear teeth even under very high loads, which allows the use of this oil in Renault Duster 4×4 gearboxes that are used in off-road conditions. Thanks to its oxidation resistance, ELF TRANSELF NFJ 75W80 effectively protects transmission elements from wear and corrosion throughout their entire service life.
It is officially recommended by Renault as a transmission oil for Duster with manual transmission.
Automatic transmission oil Renault Duster
Which oil to use in the Renault Duster 2.0 automatic transmission is regulated by the automaker's regulations. Renault recommends ELF RENAULTMATIC D3 SYN fluid for Duster with automatic transmission.
It has friction properties specially selected taking into account the materials of the parts used in DP0 gearboxes. This allows you to achieve maximum transmission of torque to the wheels and smooth shifting in all driving modes.
The order of steps to monitor the lubricant level in the Duster manual transmission
- The oil level is checked for underbody leaks or other factors associated with transmission problems. To check the fluid level, you first need to install the machine on a hill - this could be an overpass, an elevator or an inspection hole. We go under the car and find the drain plug.
- To unscrew the inspection cover, you must remove the engine protection
- Remove the plug and check the fluid level with a wrench L. Please note that the wrench should be located at the lower edge of the inspection hole. You will need to add a certain amount of oil if its level is below the specified level. Add oil only according to the manufacturer's recommendations
- After making sure that the fluid level is sufficient, tighten the cap tightly after replacing the cap gasket
Changing the gearbox oil on Renault Logan (Renault Logan)
- The first part should be labeled 75w, 80w or 85w. They designate, respectively, the minimum operating temperature of -40, -26 and -12 degrees Celsius. Therefore, it is recommended to fill in oil marked 75w - it is suitable for most regions.
- The second part should be marked 80, 85 or 90. It is worth remembering that in all three cases the maximum operating temperature is considered to be 35 degrees Celsius. But the viscosity of these oils differs. Liquids marked 90 are considered the best in this regard.
All oils (both transmission and motor) are divided into three main types: synthetic, semi-synthetic and mineral. Synthetic lubricants are considered to be of the highest quality - they are recommended for use in Renault Sandero Stepway. It is recommended to use Elf Tranself NFJ 75w-80 API GL-4 fluid.
Test drive of the new Renault Duster: Mature The quality of the oil used is worth talking about separately. When filling, only all-season oils are used. Moreover, the liquid should be selected based on its viscosity level. Moreover, the viscosity is determined by the markings on the container with the lubricating fluid. The marking looks something like this:
- By analogy with the previous case, we install the car on a pit or hang it on a lift.
- Remove the plastic protective panel of the pallet.
- We unscrew the plug on the drain hole and empty the crankcase of the fluid.
- We screw this plug back, do not forget to first clean the magnet from accumulated chips.
- We unscrew the plastic filler plug and feed new lubricant into the unit through the hole.
- When the pan is filled to the required level, the liquid will spontaneously flow out in the opposite direction.
- Screw the plug into place.
It is in this way that the lubricant is replaced and its level is monitored in the mechanics.
This completes the replacement procedure.
Recommended oil for Renault Logan gearbox
From the factory, oil is poured into the gearbox, which is subsequently recommended for further use. For example, if there is a need to add a substance to the unit.
This mechanical oil has the following properties:

Changing the oil in the manual transmission. Renault Logan
If it is necessary to carry out certain work on the machine, for example, to change the drive oil seal, then the oil will need to be drained from the box. Also, if the car is used for a long time in difficult conditions or with high mileage, it will also be necessary to change the transmission fluid.
Replacement procedure
The repairman will need a pit (or a lift). Having gained access to the lower part of the car, you need to remove the engine protection (if equipped).
The replacement procedure is as follows:
- Place a container under the drain hole.
- Unscrew the plug from the hole.
- The oil is drained.
- When the liquid reaches the required level when adding, the drain cap must be screwed back on.
- At the same time, it is worth changing the o-rings.
If you use a high-quality lubricant and replace it regularly, you can count on the Duster to “run” for a long time and without problems. If there are no conditions for performing this operation yourself, it should be performed at a service station. Signs of a gearbox malfunction should never be ignored.

Changing the oil in a Renault Duster manual transmission
About a year ago I posted a post about changing the oil in the entire transmission (www.drive2/l/7558578/).
If it is simply necessary to change the standard oil in the rear and angular gearboxes, then I changed it in the gearbox only because of a howling noise that appeared at 3500 rpm (as it turned out, this is a massive feature and cannot be cured).
I filled the gearbox with Castrol Syntrans V FE 75W-80, recommended on the Duster Club forum, and added Liqui Moly 1988 additive with molybdenum (1.5 tubes). I did this on all previous cars, and the gearbox always responded with gratitude in the form of the easiest gear shift.
...but not Duster.
At first everything was OK, the gears engaged, in general, just as well as with factory oil. The third is a little tighter - but this is new, and almost everyone has it, judging by the forum.
However, in the last two weeks it got worse with the third gear. It got to the point of crunching if you switched from second at rpm above 3500. The situation worsened in the heat. I had to switch carefully. On the last day before the replacement (today) there was a feeling that even the 2nd one had become more difficult to stick in.
I decided to roll back to the factory Elf TRANSELF NFJ 75W-80 without any additives.
I drained the black oil (due to molybdenum, so that’s normal). The mileage on Castrol was 17,000 km.
But what confused me was the consistency. The oil drained was very liquid. It flowed at the end in a needle-thin stream and foamed in the canister. In the photo the oil has already settled.
I filled it with a syringe like this. Fits 2.4 liters.
I had to wrap fum tape around the threads, because... it was leaking from under it. It is also advisable to have an extension hose for it, because... The supplied one is very short, which causes a number of inconveniences when pouring oil.
I unscrew the drain plugs with such a stray
As strong as a ratchet head - unlike L-shaped wrenches.
Result: I drove about 500 meters from the garage - and there it was, the former ease of switching! While I got home (about 7 km with a bunch of traffic lights), I accelerated the car: from second to third at 4000 rpm. - easily!
If it weren’t for the howling that confused me, I would have changed it to 30,000 at the factory.
Now I'm confused:
— Is it because of the additive? I know it's not good for synchronizers to reduce friction, but why did everything shift smoothly until recently?
— Is it because of the oil? I bought it from Exist. In winter it’s not dull, which means it’s not pale.
- Or the reason is in the box itself. Perhaps Renault engineers miscalculated something, since ELF even released a special series of oils for Renault gearboxes.
And also, 600 g of Castrol Syntrans V FE oil remained from the last shift. If suddenly someone pours Castrol into the checkpoint, I’m ready to exchange it for beer
