Changing automatic and manual transmission oil on a Toyota Corolla 120: how to choose oil

Automatic and manual gearboxes of the Toyota Corolla 120 operate in difficult conditions. To extend their service life, it is necessary to promptly replace the transmission fluid, purchasing only original or recommended oil. Otherwise, the gearbox will quickly fail.

It is recommended to fill the Corolla 120 manual gearbox with original Toyota LV 75W oil.

Original oil for manual transmission, but it is optimally suited for manual transmission. To replace, you will need from 1.9 to 2.3 liters, depending on the filling volume of the gearbox. The cost of branded oil ranges from 560 to 800 rubles per liter.

In addition to branded lubricant, the automaker allows the filling of transmission fluids from third-party manufacturers. In this case, the oil must meet the SAE 75W-90 specification. The use of thinner or thicker lubricants has a detrimental effect on the box. Another requirement of the automaker is that the fluid meets the API specification - GL4 or GL5.

Based on the operating experience of the Toyota Corolla 120, it has been revealed that it is better to purchase oil with the GL4 specification. GL5 grease has a more aggressive composition. Therefore, it negatively affects synchronizers. Its use can reduce the service life of a manual transmission by 20-25%.

You should not purchase transmission fluids that have the “HYPOID” prefix, even from Toyota. These oils have a different SAE specification than the recommended one. When pouring oil labeled “HYPOID”, the synchronizers may fail after 30-40 thousand km, since this lubricant is more intended for gearboxes.

Unlike manual transmissions, automatic transmissions are more sensitive to transmission oil. Therefore, it is recommended to fill the box only with original lubricant. It is available in two versions:

  • in a black 4-liter container with article number 08886-81015;
  • in a silver 4-liter canister with catalog number 08886-01705.

In terms of their composition and performance characteristics, both automatic transmission oils are no different. Therefore, lubricants can be mixed by adding or partially replacing. The price of oils is also the same and ranges from 2 to 2.

5 thousand rubles.

Branded automatic transmission oil The only difference between the fluids is the country in which they are produced. Branded automatic transmission lubricant is also sold in liter jars with article number 08886-81016. Its cost is about 600 rubles.

Why and when to change the oil

Structurally, all models of automatic transmissions are different; what they have in common is the urgent need for lubrication. During operation, parts are subject to friction against each other, which leads to increased wear of the mechanisms. If you do not counteract this, the box will quickly become unusable.

Oil creates a layer between loaded surfaces, a thin film envelops parts and prevents abrasion of mechanisms. Thus, the liquid protects the box, helps it work and perform its functions.

The oil film performs a number of tasks:

  • Reduces the temperature of parts;
  • Removes products formed by friction;
  • Prevents oxidation; Seals joints of elements;
  • Transmits torque; Provides frictional clutch;
  • Transmits energy in hydraulic mechanisms.

The Toyota Corolla manufacturer advises, in the E120 and E150 series, to change the automatic transmission oil after every 40 - 50 thousand kilometers. Replacement is carried out with the obligatory removal of the box pan, since without this manipulation 0.5 liters of old lubricant will remain in the system, which will impair the performance of fresh lubricant. It is mandatory to change the oil filter at the same time as changing the oil, since over the specified mileage it breaks down and does not filter the lubricant from wear products and impurities.

Timely replacement prevents early wear of the gearbox clutches and prevents overheating of the unit. Jerking when shifting gears is the first sign of the end of the lubricant’s service life.

Toyota Corolla X

The tenth generation Toyota Corolla was produced from 2006 to 2010 (restyling from 2010 to 2013) in E140 and E150 bodies, equipped with a 5 and 6-speed manual transmission, automatic or robotic gearbox, as well as a CVT.

The cars of the model range were equipped with gasoline and diesel engines with power ranging from 90 to 136 hp. Belong to a C-class car.

Manual transmission

As for the manual transmission, 1.9 or 2.3 liters are poured here. transmissions, depending on the gear levels - 5 and 6, respectively.

You can also navigate by the installed engine.

  1. 4ZZ-FE and 3ZZ-FE (petrol) - 1.9 liters of transmission;
  2. 2ZZ-GE (petrol) - 2.3;
  3. 1CD-FTV (diesel) - 2.5.

The manufacturer recommends filling the gearbox with original transmission oils, for example:

  1. TOYOTA Gear Oil Manual Transmission “Getriebeoil LV 75W” - according to article 08885-81001.
  2. TOYOTA Manual Transmission Gear Oil GL-4 75w-90 GL 4 - 08885-81026.

But since original working fluids are expensive, analogues can be used - the main thing is to adhere to the correct specification. According to API, this is GL4 or GL5. According to SAE - 75W-90.

Here is an excerpt from the manual.

For example, there is a good analogue - ZIC GFT 75w-90.

Automatic transmission

The 4-speed automatic transmission U340E, which is installed on cars in the E140/150 body, is filled with other brands of transmission oils. Here you need to focus on the ATF specification.

The manufacturer recommends filling the Toyota Corolla automatic transmission with original transmission oil ATF Type T-IV (for early models) or ATF WS (for later ones, red).

It is not recommended to mix these oils, so read the documentation for the machine before replacing the transmission.

As an analogue, you can use other oils, for example, Mobil ATF 3309, CASTROL Transmax or TOTAL FLUIDE XLD FE.

There are many similar oils for automatic transmissions on the market, so there is no point in listing them all, the main thing is that they fit the above specification (ATF), but it is still better to pour original oils.

Replacement can be made either partially or completely. In the first case, when the working fluid is not very dirty and the replacement is done manually, up to 4 liters may be needed. transmissions (at a standard of 8). With washing it will take a full 8.

In the second case, when the replacement takes place using a service device, you may need from 10 to 12 liters.

Variable speed drive

As for the Aisin K311 variator, which is installed on a car in the E150 body, Toyota CVT Fluid TC transmission fluid is poured here - according to article 08886-02105 (for warm climates) or Toyota CVT Fluid FE (for operation in low temperatures) in an amount of about 10 liters (you will need 3 cans of 4 liters each). TC oil is more viscous.

Robot

As for the oil in the Toyota Corolla X robot box, 1.9 or 2.4 (for a six-speed unit) liters of the original Genuine Manual Transmission Gear Oil LV is poured into it - article number 08885-81001. The same specifications are maintained here - according to API GL-4 and SAE 75.

There are analogues, for example, the German RAVENOL MTF-3 SAE 75W or Castrol Syntrax Longlife 75W-90, but it is still better to pour an analogue.

Toyota Corolla IX

The ninth generation Toyota Corolla in the E120 body was produced from 2000 to 2005.

The car with the 4ZZ-FE engine (97 hp - 1.4 l.) was equipped with only a manual transmission, and with the 3ZZ-FE engines (110 hp - 1.6 l.) and the forced 2ZZ-GE with VVT-L (215 l. .s. - 1.8 l.) - Automatic transmission.

As in the tenth generation, the general approach to choosing oil for replacement in gearboxes (manual and automatic) is the same. But there are some nuances here.

Manual transmission

As for manual transmissions, many recommend pouring original TOYOTA LV 75W oil here and this is, in principle, correct. To replace, immediately prepare at least 2 liters. (norm 1.9).

But you can take a different path. We already know that the manufacturer recommends filling the transmission with GL4 or GL5 oil (API specification).

But many car owners of Toyota Corolla in the E120 body, from their experience in operating the car, still recommend pouring only working fluids according to the GL4 specification into the manual transmission, since they have a beneficial effect on the operation of the synchronizers, which cannot be said about similar fluids GL5 (GL-4+), which have a more aggressive composition, have a detrimental effect on synchronizers and are better suited for bridges.

Also avoid oils with the prefix "HYPOID", for example, Toyota Hypoid Gear Oil 85W-90. These are hypoid oils and, as a rule, they are poured into gearboxes; they can also damage synchronizers. And they don’t fit the SAE specification (75W-90).

  • Many people praise the synthetic gear oil BARDAHL 75W90, as it has not proven itself badly, but it is still better to use analogues (our opinion).

Automatic transmission

As for automatic transmissions, they are filled with the same TOYOTA ATF Type T-IV (in a black can - article 08886-81015) or in a silver can - under article 08886-01705.

To replace, you need at least 8 liters. (with flushing), so you will have to take two 4 (5) liter canisters at once.

But if you carry out the replacement at a service center, then be prepared to pay for 12 liters since the replacement there takes place using a hardware method. In this case, the filling capacity can be 6.8/6.9/8.3 l. depending on the automatic transmission model.

Lubricant filling process

Timely change of lubricant in automatic transmissions is one of the conditions for trouble-free operation of the transmission as a whole. Before changing the oil in the automatic transmission of a Toyota Corolla, you should familiarize yourself with the procedure for performing the work.

Manufacturers of modern cars often claim that the lubricant poured into the gearbox housing at the factory does not need to be changed throughout its entire service life. The oil change in the Toyota Corolla automatic transmission should be carried out according to the manufacturer’s recommendations, every 160 thousand km. But real vehicle operating conditions reduce the service life of the fluid several times, so it is advisable to change the lubricant after 40–60 thousand km. In addition, the main sign of the need to replace the fluid in the box is its darkening, accompanied by the appearance of a characteristic odor.

ஜ Entry No. 10. Complete automatic transmission oil change.ஜ — Toyota Corolla, 1.6 l., 2006 on DRIVE2

I decided to make a detailed report on changing the oil in our automatic transmissions. I did it for the first time. The car ran for 130 thousand, in harsh operating conditions (they carried loads on it), the oil was changed every 40 thousand, 3.5 liters each, by the officials of the previous owner. Naturally, the pan was not cleaned, the filter was not changed.

The liquid was brown in color, indicating that it had done a good job. I wanted to make a complete replacement after 20 thousand, but after one adventure happened to me, it was decided to change it urgently, although the box behaved as usual. No jerks, no kicks. Except that the gripping of the ass during shifts has become more noticeable.

I read the reports, consulted with snatch-88, and took action)

So, to change the oil in an automatic transmission we need

1. TOYOTA ATF T-IV oil black canister - 08886810165 - 2 pcs (8 l) - 3000 rub. 2. Oil filter for automatic transmission - 35330-120405 - only for Europeans - 1500r3. Pan gasket - 35168-12060 - 240 rub.4. O-ring for the drain plug of the pan - 35178-30010 -40r.5.

The hose is transparent for 9 or 10, 2-3 meters. — 150 rub. 6. Torque wrench (if you don’t have one, buy it from someone, it’s a useful thing) - 500 rubles.7. Gasoline or acetone - 50 rub. 8. Brush, rubber gloves, lint-free rags - 50 rubles. 9.

Funnel, measuring utensils (2 glasses per liter preferably, I found only 0.5).

10. Tools, level hands, trestle and assistant.

First of all, we drive the car onto an overpass or into a hole.

We remove the protection and see the automatic transmission housing.

We unscrew the plug (carefully and slowly) with a 14-mm socket. Attention! On some models, the plug may have a 8-mm hexagon, find out about this in advance!

Unscrew it, hot liquid will flow out, pour it into the container. About 3.7 liters will drain.

We work with gloves, on the oil canister it is written that prolonged contact with the waste liquid causes skin cancer... So be careful) We wait until the remaining liquid has drained and unscrew the pan with a 10mm head. Attention! Special “smart people” may tell you that there is no point in removing the pan. It is nonsense.

The tray has magnets that collect all sorts of junk from used oil, as well as chips, etc. Over time, they become covered with a “coat” of such debris, and if they are not cleaned, they catch this debris less and less. The same applies to the pan, which over time becomes covered with a good layer of fuel oil-like substance that can “absorb” magnets.

Therefore this is a very important part of the procedure.

We twist it for a long time and tediously)) We leave 2 bolts at the edges so that it does not fall off right away. It will come off slightly (if it doesn’t come off, pry it off with a screwdriver) and more liquid will pour out from the side of the plug, catch it with the container. Let's collect about 0.5 liters more.

We remove the pan and examine it for chips and other things. There’s a good amount of shit accumulated on mine, but no crime (no shavings)

We look at the magnets. One in a nice “fur coat”

The second one is more or less still

We remove them and clean them in acetone. We do the same with the pallet. We wash everything until it’s shiny and beautiful.

beauty

We remove the filter (I ran my finger over it so that you could see what layer of rubbish there was on it, as well as on the pallet)

We are studying it too. There was quite a lot of garbage inside.

We replace it with a new one. We only install the original, they don’t skimp on this.

Attention! Someone washes the filter with gasoline to save money and puts it back in place. Without flaring, this method is crap. It’s better not to flare and abuse the filter. This procedure is rare (the filter can be changed every 40 thousand or even more) so there is no point in saving here. Let's buy a new one!

Tighten carefully, using a torque wrench, with a force of
11 Nm.
beauty

We put a new gasket on our pallet (forgot to take a photo). And we put it in place after degreasing the joining surface. Tighten carefully with a specified force of 5 Nm

. Less force threatens leakage, more force threatens to compress the gasket. So if there is no key, we turn it carefully, with feeling, sensibly, with arrangement.

We tighten the plug using a new gasket.

Tightening torque 17 Nm

We fill in as much oil as we drained. I got about 4.5 liters.

We pour carefully, it’s better to attach a hose to the funnel, otherwise it’s inconvenient, I spilled a little (((

Let's continue, now the fun part. We need to find the hose going from the radiator to the automatic transmission crankcase.

We undock it, put on a transparent hose (for easy monitoring of the color of the liquid) and put it in some container.

Next, the assistant starts the engine, the liquid begins to flow into the container through the hose, drain a liter of old liquid (or half a liter depending on the volume of your measuring container) and fill in the same amount as the new liquid was drained.

And so on until a beautiful crimson color or close to it comes out of the hose. According to reviews, you need 4-5 liters. I got my second canister (4L) and the color was very close to the desired one. I think another half liter would have been just right, but it’s still good.

The big job is done!) Now the color on the dipstick is raspberry, everything is as it should be)

Selecting oil and filter

The manufacturer fills gearboxes with JWS3309 and Type T-IV (or T4) approved oil. When purchasing a replacement lubricant, you need to choose a liquid that corresponds to exactly these parameters. Original Toyota Genuine ATF WS oil (order number 08886–02305) is supplied in plastic cans with a capacity of 0.946 liters or in four-liter tin cans.

Original Toyota Genuine ATF WS Oil A good alternative to the original lubricant is Total Fluide XLD FE, as well as Castrol Transmax Dex VI Mercon LV. However, Toyota recommends using only its own oil for replacement. Analogues can be used to refill automatic transmissions of older Corolla models with a 110 body, designed for the use of lubricants with a lower tolerance - D-III.

The video, shot by Vladimir Pyanykh, shows the process of changing the oil on a Toyota Corolla 110.

When changing the lubricant, a new oil filter must be installed. For Corolla E150 2010 and 2012 models, the original device with catalog number 35330–0W020 is used. The same filter was used on the earlier Toyota Corolla E120 2007 model. There are many analogues of such filter elements, for example, JS Asakashi JT425K or SAT ST353300W020, as well as a number of others.

On right-hand drive versions of Toyota Corolla Spasio and Fielder, the original filter 35330-0W021 or its analogue JS Asakashi JT425K is used.

Level control and required volume

While operating a Toyota Corolla, you should regularly monitor the oil level in the box.

On a new car, it is necessary to control the amount of lubricant after 50 thousand kilometers. On cars older than five years, the inspection frequency is every 20 thousand kilometers traveled or once a year.

The oil level in the Corolla automatic transmission can be checked using a special dipstick installed in the transmission housing. With a cold engine, the volume of lubricant should be no less than about on the dipstick rod. After the box has completely warmed up, without turning off the engine, you need to make sure that the amount of fluid is at the o level. If the oil volume is insufficient, it is necessary to add it and find out the reason for the decrease.

The full filling capacity of a Toyota car box depends on the country where the cars are delivered. Four-speed automatic transmissions Corolla 120 and 150 for European regions hold 3.8–4.0 liters of lubricant. Cars for the Japanese domestic market - Spasio and Fielder are equipped with all-wheel drive, so their gearbox crankcases are more capacious and hold about 8 liters of fluid.

[custom_ads_shortcode1]

Manual transmission oil change period and required volume

Checking and changing the oil in the manual transmission in the Toyota Corolla E150 is carried out every 40 thousand kilometers. The timing of changing the oil in a manual transmission in a Toyota Corolla E 150 can also be measured in years: approximately once every three years.

Main signs of an oil change:

  • noise in the gearbox;
  • difficulty switching;
  • unpleasant sound when switching;
  • presence of leakage.

If at least one of these symptoms appears, you should prepare to replace the oil fluid.

What is the function of transmission oil?

All modern automobile oils, both those used in engines and transmissions, consist of a base and a set of additional compounds - additives. Basically, the quality of the lubricating function is determined by the base, and the additional additive package only corrects and improves its performance characteristics.

Transmission systems, in addition to lubrication, have another important task. When the manual transmission gears in mesh rotate, a large amount of heat is generated.

In the box of a moving car, the temperature fluctuates within 150 degrees Celsius, while at the very point of contact of the gears it can rise to 300 degrees.

The oil poured into the manual transmission also performs a heat-removing function, while cooling the parts and preventing critical overheating of the box.

Preparation for replacement and necessary tools

Preparing to change the oil in a Toyota Corolla E150 manual transmission involves studying safety precautions and preparing tools.

Safety rules when changing oil in a manual transmission:

  • find special clothing and gloves;
  • turn on bright lighting;
  • Replacements can only be made 15-25 minutes after arrival. The oil should cool down a little.

List of necessary tools for changing the oil in a Toyota Corolla E 150 manual transmission:

  • set of wrenches and hex keys.
  • pharmaceutical syringe.
  • screwdriver.
  • empty container for waste liquid.
  • fresh oil.
  • additional gaskets for the drain and filler holes.

Draining old oil from the gearbox and cleaning the pan

Draining old oil from the tank into a manual transmission on a Toyota Corolla E150:

  1. The car is placed in the garage on a pit or a lift.
  2. The filler plug is unscrewed at the bottom of the vehicle. The car oil is drained within 15-25 minutes.
  3. The plug is screwed back in.
  4. Using a wrench, unscrew the pan and carefully drain the residual oil. The condition of the liquid is assessed. If there are chips, the tray is thoroughly washed, cleaned with a wire brush and wiped with a clean rag.

  5. The tray is installed in the reverse order. All bolts are carefully tightened.

Filling new oil in the manual transmission

Step-by-step process for adding new fluid:

  1. The filler plug opens. Located on the crankcase.
  2. Using a syringe, the oil is filled to the maximum level.
  3. The plug closes. The engine starts and warms up for 10-15 minutes.
  4. The oil fluid level is rechecked. If necessary, top up.

In order not to overpay for transmission fluid, many people dilute semi-synthetic and synthetic oil. This is strictly not recommended. If the proportions are incorrect, the liquid will begin to foam, which can cause the box to jam.

This completes the oil change process for the Totota Corolla E150.

How often do you change transmission oil?

At high temperature loads, the oil begins to foam, and at the same time its lubricating characteristics are significantly reduced. Also, during operation, additives burn out, which in turn impairs the performance of the protective function.

The result of untimely replacement of the lubricant is the formation of scuffing on the main gear - during operation, its gears begin to emit a peculiar buzzing sound; after 500-1000 kilometers, the teeth of the transmission parts cannot withstand the increased load and begin to collapse.

If appropriate measures are not taken, the Corolla's manual transmission may jam or completely fail.

The 2008 Toyota Corolla is a front-wheel drive car whose manual transmission is subject to the greatest load, unlike rear-wheel drive cars.

In order to maintain the performance of the transmission for a long time, a scheduled oil change should be carried out every 50-60 thousand kilometers, and for aggressive driving or for cars participating in racing, this period should be reduced to 30-40 thousand.

How to change the oil in a Toyota Corolla gearbox

In principle, it will not be difficult to deal with changing the oil in a Corolla manual transmission. The drain hole bolt for the hexagon will not be difficult to find. But you will have to look for the filler hole if you have never had to change the oil in the box before.

The bolt, 24mm, for the filler hole (also known as the control hole) is located behind the mudguard of the left wheel. The shield is secured with four clips; they need to be removed and the plastic casing moved to the side.

It is most convenient to pour fresh oil into the box using a special syringe or a long piece of hose with a funnel. The filler plug should be tightened to 39 Nm.

Checking the gearbox oil level

When operating vehicles, the level of transmission oils in manual transmissions decreases, so in addition to replacement, they should also be topped up regularly. Reasons to check the level are any signs of change in transmission performance. Checking the level and then adding oil are simple operations that you can do yourself.

Work order:

  • The car must be placed on a flat horizontal surface above the inspection hole or raised using a lift. Checking the level should be done no earlier than 10 minutes after the vehicle has come to a complete stop, with the engine turned off.
  • The surface of the gearbox should be cleaned around the level plugs and breather to prevent dirt from getting inside.
  • Unscrew the cap and be sure to wipe it clean.
  • Check the oil level - it should reach the bottom edge of the level plug hole.
  • If the level is insufficient, unscrew the breathing valve (breather) located at the top of the manual transmission.
  • Topping up should be done through the hole in the breathing valve in small portions until oil flows out of the hole for the level plug. For topping up, you can use a funnel and a suitable sized hose.
  • Screw the plug into place and tighten it with the required force.
  • Reinstall the breather.

    I changed the oil in the box a year ago at 100 thousand. I didn’t find anything criminal - the drained oil was very light. I filled it with LV and it makes no noise.

  • What gear oil is recommended for Corolla?

    Toyota Corolla cars produced in 2008 are equipped with 5- and 6-speed manual transmissions. To completely replace a five mortar, you will need approximately 1.9 liters of oil, a six mortar - 2.3.

    When choosing a brand, you do not need to give preference to cheap and low-quality products; it is better to purchase more expensive, but high-quality products from well-known brands or branded products produced by Toyota.

Oil change options

There are several types of oil changes in Toyota Corolla automatic transmissions, which differ in complexity:

  1. The simplest operation is a partial replacement of the lubricant, which does not involve installing a new oil filter. In this case, the liquid located in the oil pan of the box is drained through a special hole, which is closed with a screw plug. Fresh grease is added through the dipstick hole. When making such a replacement, you need to know exactly the type of oil previously poured into the automatic transmission, since mixing fluids with different tolerances is prohibited.
  2. A more complex process is a complete oil change, which is carried out in specialized automatic transmission repair and maintenance centers. During this procedure, the old oil is washed out with new oil supplied under pressure. In this case, up to 12 liters of ATF fluid will be required to change the lubricant. This operation is carried out without changing the filter and is therefore risky, especially on transmissions with high mileage. Since the dirt and wear products contained in the waste fluid will clog the filter and spread throughout the transmission. How the box will behave and how long it will last after such a replacement is unknown.
  3. The third option is most preferable for Corolla automatic transmissions with any mileage. It consists of a complete oil change with removal of the pan, which allows you to install a new oil filter instead of the old one, in which a significant amount of dirt accumulates. Another advantage of this method, unlike others, is the ability to wash the inside of the pan and magnets from wear particles.

Features of choice

All presented products are divided into three large groups: mineral, semi-synthetic and synthetic oils. The first ones are made from oil. They have the lowest cost, and are used in old cars from the 90s to the 70s. If you have a modern foreign car manufactured in 2000 (and later), then it is recommended to use synthetic or semi-synthetic products.

Such oils (unlike mineral oils) have many advantages, including:

  • High thermal and chemical stability.
  • Higher turnover.
  • Resistance to temperature fluctuations.
  • Long service life.
  • Better penetration.

Synthetics promote the formation of a denser film on the surface of parts, which significantly reduces wear.

If funds allow, order original products from the manufacturer. It is necessary to use TOYOTA Getriebeoil LV 75W, since it was created specifically for this car model and, accordingly, will provide high-quality protection for gearbox components. If these products are too expensive, you can take a closer look at more affordable analogues. Car owners celebrate products from Castrol.

How to change it yourself?

Changing the oil in an automatic transmission with removing the pan is a fairly simple operation that you can do yourself.

When performing work, it is necessary to take into account that machines for the European and Japanese markets are equipped with gearboxes that differ in design and crankcase volume.

On European Corollas 120 and 150, the gearbox design is simple, and the replacement process is therefore simple. And in the Toyota Spasio, which is a version of the Corolla 120 with right-hand drive, as well as the Toyota Fielder 121, all-wheel drive is installed. Therefore, when changing the oil in these cars, it is important not to confuse the transmission pan with a similar part of the transfer case.

Necessary components for work

To replace the transmission, it is not oil that is used, but a special composition intended specifically for this unit. The container label for this liquid bears the designation ATF (automatic transmission fuid). This liquid is able to function under more difficult conditions, withstanding significant loads. When the gearbox is operating, the operating temperature of the parts reaches 300-400*C.

The torque converter experiences heavy loads: when the car is moving, the temperature of the systems reaches 150*C.

During long-term operation of the gearbox, volatile components evaporate from the solution used for lubrication and cooling, and the composition of the transmission fluid changes, which is unacceptable.

The fluid poured into the Toyota Corolla automatic transmission performs a dual function:

  • heat removal from the box parts to the external environment;
  • lubrication of contacting parts.

To stabilize the solution at high temperatures and stabilize ongoing processes while preventing oxidation, special additives are added that prevent wear of parts and allow mechanisms to function normally at temperatures from -40* to +150*C.

During long-term operation of the gearbox, volatile components evaporate from the fluid used for lubrication and cooling, and the composition of the transmission fluid changes, which is unacceptable for the normal operation of the mechanisms.

The type of fluid used for each vehicle's transmission is indicated in the factory documents. The most commonly used type of transmission fluid is DEXRON (modifications I, II, III).

When completely replacing the fluid, it is imperative to determine the labeling of all the necessary components that may be needed for replacement: oil filter, O-rings and gaskets.

Typically, synthetic solutions used for transmission are 2-3 times more expensive than mineral solutions.

It must be taken into account that fluids are poured through the level measurement hole in the gearbox, and in some brands of cars using a control plug in the automatic transmission box.

Tools and materials

To change the oil you will need:

  • oil - 4 liters for left-hand drive cars and 8 liters for right-hand drive cars;
  • filter device;
  • filter gasket;
  • new drain plug gasket;
  • stable, wide container with a volume of at least 5 liters for collecting used oil;

Algorithm of actions

Before starting the procedure, the car must be warmed up to operating temperature and placed on a lift or inspection hole in the garage. The procedure for changing the oil in the gearbox of a 2008 Toyota Corolla is as follows:

  1. You need to unscrew the drain plug and drain the oil from the pan.
  2. After draining the main part of the liquid, it is necessary to loosen the 19 10 mm bolts securing the pan.
  3. Then you should unscrew all the bolts, except for any two located oppositely.
  4. You need to insert the tip of a wooden wedge into the gap between the pan and the crankcase and disconnect the parts from each other. It is important not to damage the sealing gasket.
  5. Unscrew the last two bolts and carefully remove the pan, tilting it to the side to drain the remaining oil as much as possible.
  6. After this, you need to unscrew the magnetic cover of the differential box and drain the lubricant from there.
  7. Wash the pan and plugs with gasoline, paying special attention to the chip-collecting magnets installed on the pan body.
  8. You need to unscrew the three 10 mm bolts securing the filter and replace the device. It must be remembered that it contains a certain amount of oil. The tightening of the filter bolts should be no more than 10 Nm.
  9. Reassemble the box in reverse order. The pallet bolts must be tightened crosswise, ensuring an even fit of the parts. At the same time, they should not be overtightened (torque no more than 8 Nm), since the body and pan gasket are very easily deformed. The tightening torque for the drain plug is 49 Nm.
  10. New oil must be poured through the hole for the dipstick in an amount of no more than 3.5 liters. In this case, it is necessary to check that there are no leaks through the plugs and the pan gasket. Then warm up the car and once again make sure there are no leaks.
  11. On a warm box, it is necessary to move the gear selector to all positions, holding it in each position for about 10–20 seconds. The car does not move. Perform these steps three times.
  12. Then you need to park the car on a level surface and measure the oil level, which should correspond to the level on the dipstick. Volume deviations up or down are unacceptable. If there is not enough oil, it must be added. In case of excess lubricant, it is convenient to use a regular medical syringe of maximum volume to drain it. You need to put a long tube on it, which should be lowered into the hole for the dipstick.

When changing the oil in the crankcase of a Toyota Corolla automatic transmission, a certain amount of old lubricant remains. Therefore, if the car has a long mileage, then after 1 thousand kilometers traveled after the replacement, you can additionally partially change the fluid. This procedure will increase the percentage of new oil in the box and will remove accumulated wear products that can settle in various places in the automatic transmission crankcase.

What kind of oil is in the automatic transmission of Toyota Corolla

The manufacturer, in the service book, provides a list of substances recommended for change, which have been accredited as a result of certification and testing for compliance when changing the oil in a Toyota Corolla 150 automatic. The main criterion for selecting such substances is compliance with ATF-III standards for cars in the 120 body and ATF-IV for 150 body. Due to their properties, such products, when replaced, allow you to retain all the positive qualities of the mechanism for a long time.

However, there are also many different models on the market that, in addition to meeting standards, can also have a positive effect on the operation of the entire unit. The choice of products remains with the consumer. The main criterion when changing the oil in a Toyota Corolla automatic transmission is the choice of a genuine, original product. Since Toyota products are very popular and are considered to be of the highest quality, many scammers create counterfeit products, presenting them as a natural product. The manufacturer is trying to protect the consumer by creating new forms of protection, but the likelihood of falling for a counterfeit remains quite high. In addition, there are 3 main types of transmission fluid on the market, classified depending on the manufacturing method and their cleaning properties:

  1. Mineral oils are in minimal demand, since their characteristics are least suitable for this automatic transmission. Considering the ease of manufacture and the absence of modern additives, such products have minimal washing properties and can even cause damage to the automatic transmission, leading to complete failure of the unit.
  2. Semi-synthetics are most popular among owners of high-mileage transmissions. Due to its resistance to fluidity even at sub-zero temperatures, such a substance does not flow out of microcracks or sweaty parts of the box. It is manufactured using a certain amount of additives and meets modern ATF-III standards.
  3. Synthetics are the most modern products and are made using a large number of different additives. Thanks to its cooling and washing properties, this substance allows you to keep the main parts of the box unit in working condition for a long time. During operation, the composition covers all parts of the box with a thick layer of film, creating a protective layer. It is most popular among responsible car enthusiasts when changing the oil in a Toyota Corolla 2008 automatic transmission.

Something is either wrong with my search or I can’t find any information. In general, I want to change the automatic transmission oil. The question is simple: which one to pour? The dipstick says ATF type 4 (in my opinion), during the diagnostics the technician said Dextron III has an analogue. He is right?

For the first time, an automatic machine is therefore not strong in this matter.

Only ATF Type-IV and only TOYOTA, because... there are no analogues. This is a special liquid. And don’t believe anyone that Castrol is universal, that there are additives and all that, or maybe Mobil will fill it with something else. Do not believe. In Irkutsk, ATF Type-IV costs 950 rubles.. You need a maximum of 2 cans, this is without flushing. I did this - I drained it, refilled it, ordered a new felt filter, soon I will drain it, change the filter and fill it with new oil. Wait, I'm doing a flush. I don’t believe in all the pumps, suctions and the like. I also ordered a cork gasket, all this is at home! Wow!

Only T4, FilToyo says correctly: no analogue substitutes. And don’t run into a fake, buy only from a trusted place.

Just
change
! It drains without GT about 3.8 liters from the box and about 100 ml from the differential. I didn't change the gasket. In general, here it is: https://www.spacioclub.ru/ZE121/service/hands/akpp/

Simple question. Your car is a 2001, how much mileage does it show on the odometer? Do you think Yap changed the oil? If the mileage is sufficient, go and change it, don’t skimp on its maintenance..

Please tell me - from the link I understood that the Spacio has about 4 liters of oil in the box - is that all? Or just what comes out? I just seem to have about 7 liters. or am I confusing something? Do Corolla and Spasika have different volumes of oil in the box?

It's not entirely clear with magnets. They are scared that they need to be positioned there somehow correctly later. How is that? Is it really possible to do it yourself if you haven’t dealt with machine guns before? Or is it better to feed the service?

There is no information on the car yet (except for small things found on the Internet). so there are a lot of questions.

Is it necessary to wash? And why can’t the filter be washed, but must be changed? And approximately how much does it cost?

Algorithm of actions when changing the oil in right-hand drive cars

Right-hand drive Toyota Corolla Fielder and Spasio cars are equipped with a separate radiator for cooling the lubricant. When changing the oil in the sump, the liquid from the radiator is not drained, since there are special valves in the pipeline design. Since the volume of lubricant in the radiator is comparable to the amount in the pan, it must be drained and replaced with a new one. This procedure will require the help of one more person.

The sequence of actions is as follows:

  1. Remove the oil drain hose from the radiator, extend it to a length that allows it to be brought into the engine compartment.
  2. The free end of the hose must be placed in an empty container with a volume of at least 4 liters.
  3. After this, the assistant must start the engine.
  4. Used lubricant will begin to flow out of the hose; at the same time, fresh oil must be poured into the hole for the dipstick.
  5. At the end of the procedure, almost 4 liters of liquid will come out of the radiator, and the same amount should be poured into the crankcase.

The amount of fluid when filling is controlled by marks on the dipstick in a warm box and with the engine running. In the photo you can see the moments of changing the oil in the gearbox of a Toyota car.

Price issue

The cost of changing the oil yourself depends on the type of vehicle transmission, type of consumables and point of sale. Automatic transmission oil will cost the buyer about 3,100 rubles. - original and approximately 1500 rubles.

- analogue. An automatic transmission filter is priced from 400 rubles. for the simplest analogue up to 2800 rubles.

for the original part. The cost of installing a drain plug is 50 rubles. A filter gasket costs 120 rubles.

Toyota Corolla Spasio and Fielder cars require 8 liters of oil to change, which increases the cost of the procedure from 3,570 to 9,050 rubles. A pan gasket damaged during the procedure can add about another 500 rubles to this amount. But in any case, the cost of purchasing consumables will be lower than the cost of repairing a failed automatic transmission.

[custom_ads_shortcode1]

How to choose an oil change?

It is advisable to use the original manufacturer's oil - Toyota ATF Type T-4. The Totachi Type T-4 analogue is also suitable. As a last resort, any lubricant such as Dextron 3 from a reputable company is acceptable. At the same time as the fluid, you need to change the filter, pan gasket and drain plug seal.

For a complete replacement you will need approximately 8 liters of ATF. A partial replacement will require no more than 4 liters of fluid, since half of the lubricant remains in the deep and hard-to-reach niches of the automatic transmission.

Consequences of untimely replacement

Aged oil has a negative effect on automatic transmission components. Moreover, each problem becomes the cause of another, more critical and requiring expensive repairs. Below is an approximate algorithm for complete failure of the gearbox in case of untimely replacement of transmission oil:

  • the first thing the owner will encounter is shocks and jerks when switching;
  • then the hydraulic accumulators in the box fail;
  • after this, burning and chipping of the friction clutches begins;
  • an increasing number of mechanical impurities completely clog the filter and it stops performing its functions;
  • Because of this, mechanical particles get into the bearings and valves of the valve body, which leads to emergency operating modes of the automatic transmission and complete immobilization of the vehicle.

Results

Summarizing the above, it is important to note that the automatic transmission filter in the Toyota Corolla variator needs to be replaced. This part prevents foreign impurities from entering the oil. An old automatic transmission filter becomes clogged over time and stops fully performing its functions. A new automatic transmission filter has a fairly low cost, so you should not skimp on this important part. It is worth noting that this part is not available in the manual transmission of the Toyota Corolla and Corolla E160. The factors for changing the oil in a Toyota Corolla gearbox yourself can be the mileage of the car and its year of manufacture. For example, cars produced in 2013 (X generation sedan, Corolla E160) have a durable and high-tech gearbox. If you take into account the car model, year of manufacture, generation (X or XI) and the possible load on the gearbox, you can easily fill the gearbox of a Toyota Corolla car yourself without any problems.
