Alarm Starline instructions for selection, installation and operation

Let's try to consider such an issue as the interchangeability of Starline alarm key fobs. The following situation is not uncommon: the owner buys a new key fob that matches the shape and color (blue/black), and then it turns out that this key fob cannot be registered in the signaling system. Roughly speaking, not all keychains are compatible with each other, even if they are produced by Starline and look the same. We will try to understand these subtleties now. Readers may have additional information. Then, it is recommended to leave a review in the “comments” section.

Types of Starline alarm key fobs

It is known that in reality there are main keychains and additional ones. The main one, as you can easily see, is always equipped with a display. Some key fobs use feedback, but not all:

  • The main key fob (for any signaling) is always equipped with a feedback module;
  • Additional ones (if they have 2 buttons) – too.

But additional key fobs with 3 or 4 buttons are never equipped with a feedback module. For clarity, here is an image of these devices:

No one will buy a keychain that differs in shape from the one used normally. And yet, mistakes in selection are not excluded.

Let's say the new acquisition turned out to be unsuitable (you came to exactly this conclusion). Then check if the new battery is actually being used. Often communication with the alarm is not established not because of incompatibility, but because the battery is low. This advice is trivial, but often neglected.

GSM, GPS, CAN, LIN and BT modules

StarLine systems have a modular architecture, which allows them to be supplemented with various devices after installation on the vehicle. But for those who have precisely decided on the necessary functionality, they are present, each of which has its own unique designation: GSM, GPS, CAN, LIN, BT.

GSM is an additional module that allows control using a mobile phone. For example, StarLine A93 GSM;

GPS is an additional module that works only in conjunction with GSM. Designed to determine the location of a car anywhere on Earth with an accuracy of up to 3 meters. For example, StarLine A96 GSM+GPS;

CAN, LIN, 2CAN, 2LIN, 2CAN+2LIN – modules for connecting to a digital data bus. The specific option is determined according to the type of car. For example, StarLine A95 CAN+LIN is suitable for most modern cars. Some cars require an analog connection type, which eliminates the need for this module. Such alarms do not have information about a similar device in their name, for example, StarLine A63, which is perfect for the VAZ 2115. Read more.

BT is a Bluetooth module recently introduced into the company’s products. Its function is to maintain communication between the car alarm and a means of identifying the owner (mobile phone or tag).

List of compatible Starline key fobs

It is better to purchase a key fob made by Starline and suitable for the alarm system used. But it is not always possible to fulfill this requirement. Objective reasons may be:

  • The alarm has been discontinued;
  • Sellers in your region do not carry one of the Starline alarm models (and key fobs for it);
  • An unlikely option - they offer only non-original products, the user is not happy with this, but there is an opportunity to buy the original from another signaling system.

What is better to buy, let the user decide. We, in turn, provide information about compatibility (data taken from the official website).

Compatibility of Starline alarm key fobs

There should have been some kind of list containing in each line models that were compatible with each other. But in reality, everything is somewhat more complicated. Please note the following: BX signals and BX Dialog are not the same thing (substitute a number for X).

All “Dialogue” keychains, main and additional, are equipped with feedback. We hope everything is clear here.

In this article we will tell you how to choose a key fob for a car alarm. Search for a model, search for a car alarm model by serial number, how to determine the manufacturer of a car alarm, search for a car alarm model using a photo of a key fob. For Starlin manufacturers

The car alarm key fob or tag may be lost or damaged.

In our catalog you can choose and buy key fobs for Starline Pandora car alarms.

Search for a spare key fob based on the alarm model.

To select a key fob or tag, you need to find out the car alarm model that you had installed.

The model name can be found in the documents for the car alarm - warranty card, work order, on the packaging box, if any remain.

If there are no documents left for the car alarm, it’s too early to worry. You need to find the car alarm serial number.

How to determine the alarm model by serial number.

The serial number can be written in several places:

  1. On the key fob itself under the battery compartment cover.
  2. In the tag (small additional keychain) under the back cover. You will need to disassemble the label itself.
  3. On the body of the remote antenna. By the way, the manufacturer of the car alarm can be determined by the type of antenna. We look into the corners of the windshield and look for a similar module.
  4. On the owner's card (in the documents for the car alarm).
  5. On the car alarm box.
  6. In the warranty card for the car alarm.
  7. On the main car alarm unit, but to do this you will have to disassemble the car console.

If the serial number is found, then determining the car alarm model will not be difficult.

Determining the Starline car alarm model by serial number.

For StarLine everything is quite simple. Looks at the first numbers, for example,

A93W311. – this means that you have installed the StarLine A93 model manufactured in November 2013. (instead of 9 there can be X - that means either 6 or 9 - without autorun or with it)

Determining the Pandora car alarm model by serial number.

Knowing the serial number, we will use the company’s resource to determine the model

We will get a result that shows the key fob model and the car alarm model.

Search for a car alarm model using a photo of the key fob.

There is also a somewhat non-standard solution. If you still have a keychain, you can use an image search on Google. Take a photo of the keychain, upload the photo and click search by image. Next, we examine the search result. Detailed instructions here.

Tested, it works quite well, but the background of the picture must be monochromatic.

Please note that this tool may make a series selection error. Therefore, it should be used to determine the manufacturer and approximate model of a car alarm (the frequency and functionality of the key fob may differ from series to series).

On the secondary market you can often buy a car already equipped with a security system. To fully use and configure the system, you need to accurately determine its modification. You can find out the Starline alarm model by the key fob, functions, as well as service documentation for the car.

Various tips for choosing

Additional equipment for signaling of the specified brand can be produced by third-party companies. The prices for such products are lower than the cost of the originals. Ask yourself the question, what is the benefit of buying non-original products? It seems that its only advantage is its low price. Well, the quality, if the cost is low, can hardly be better than what is provided in the original version.

Chinese devices differ in the following:

  1. The operating distance is significantly lower than it should be;
  2. There is feedback in the key fob, but it displays the state of the car incorrectly (or does not display it at all);
  3. From the second point it follows that the car can be opened, but the owner will never know about it.

If it were not for point “2”, everything would be quite acceptable. And so, it is possible that the product of Chinese industry will have to be modified. But the result, as you understand, is not guaranteed in such cases. Make a choice.

What to do with a new generation alarm system

Many people attribute the popularity of the brand to the fact that the compatibility of StarLine key fobs is very high. There are several reasons for searching for an additional device for remote opening/closing of a car: loss, breakdown, desire to update the appearance of the accessory. When several people use the car, an appropriate number of key fobs may be needed.

If we are talking about the latest generation of equipment, it is easy to choose key fobs suitable for the StarLine alarm system. Separately sold accessories are available for all current models. The main thing is to focus on the transport category; the brand produces protective systems for the following types of equipment:

  • Motor vehicles – 3 models.
  • Passenger cars – 27 models.
  • SUVs – 10 models.
  • Freight transport – 2 models.

It’s worth determining whether a particular key fob fits your car before purchasing, but basically it’s enough to stick to your car category and alarm series. Then the operation of the security system will raise a minimum of questions, including the implementation of built-in functions in full.

Features of programming the main unit

The body shape of most car key fobs compatible with one or another equipment is always different. Sometimes it’s not even the case itself, but its color that can say a lot. For example, starting in 2006, Starline equipment units of models B6 and B9 began to be painted blue, and not black, as before

Key fobs for alarms B9 and B6 must be selected accordingly, paying attention to the color of the case

Various exterior colors

The maximum number of “keys” that can be recognized by any security system does not exceed 4. And reprogramming the main unit implies recording all car key fobs intended for use in the future. Below is an example.

How to add and replace a “key”

It is clear that alarm key fobs that use one-way communication are not harmed as a result of the recording procedure. There is no need to worry about losing control of the signal:

  • If each key fob you register does not become “identifiable,” the contents of the main unit’s memory will not change. In this case, nothing can be reprogrammed. But it will remain possible to use “old” car key fobs that were registered earlier.
  • There are different ways to disarm a car. Instead of an alarm key fob, the Valet button is sometimes used, which is pressed in a certain sequence. In theory, the button should be used by the owner when the command from the key fob does not go to the alarm. But no one forbids you to do this either.

It seems like developers often leave workarounds. Which is designed specifically for inexperienced “programmers”.

Valet button in the car interior

Before you start recording, you need to place in front of you a complete set of key fobs for car alarms, those that will be used in the future. The security mode is turned off, and then certain actions are performed:

  1. Activate programming mode;
  2. On each car key fob, while in the cabin, press a specific key combination (according to the instructions);
  3. The programming mode is turned off or wait until it ends automatically.

Each key fob registered in the second step will be recognized by the alarm. At the same time, data about any alarm key fob that has not been registered will be forcibly deleted from memory.

Fixing keeloq synchronization violation

The following can be said about any modern alarm key fob: it has either a dialogue code or the keeloq algorithm stitched into it. The last of them has an interesting property. When the alarm key fob is invisible, it is advisable not to press any buttons on it. After repeated presses, the alarm system will no longer be able to identify “its” key fob. This property is called “synchronization error”. But this “mistake” can be corrected quickly.

Data format in the keeloq algorithm

For example, for Starline signaling, a simple recommendation is suitable: the car is disarmed, and any key is pressed 2 or 5 times. We are talking here, of course, about the key fobs for alarms. By following these steps, you can immediately restore synchronization, and you won’t need to reprogram anything.

What inconveniences arise when purchasing compatible key fobs?

Despite the high compatibility of StarLine key fobs, their owners often note that some of the alarm functions may not be available. It’s easier to understand this if you familiarize yourself with the differences compared to the original model before purchasing. The compatibility table will help with this, which reflects the differences in the functional list.

Thus, in the sixth generation of alarm systems for passenger cars with auto start, there are only 9 options. When connecting a key fob from the remaining 18 models to the security system, this function will not be available; you will have to limit yourself to opening/closing the locks. There are many more reasons to look for a key fob for your model.

Lines A, B, E, D, AS, S, X, V, M, i, R, L

One of the main tasks of StarLine engineers is to increase the anti-theft potential of manufactured equipment. You can achieve the desired results not only by improving car alarms, but also by developing additional protection tools that can work on the basis of an alarm or autonomously.

First of all, we list the types of car alarm designations: A, B, E, D, AS, S, X, V. Each letter corresponds to certain features.

“A” and “E” are the most popular models due to their affordable price and set of basic protective and service functions. Models differ in control panels, and in some cases (StarLine E91.1) in radio components of the central unit. The most popular are StarLine A93 and StarLine E95.

“B” - the line under the letter “B” has a greater anti-theft potential, which, first of all, is manifested in improved algorithms for protecting and transmitting a control signal between the car and the owner: a large bit depth is used when generating the code involved in the “dialogue” and a multi-channel transceiver is introduced . Also, the named line has a unique control panel design.

“D” is a complete analogue of the “B” line with the exception of the control panel. StarLine D alarms are positioned as protection means for SUVs.

“AS” is a line that first appeared in the sixth generation of car alarms. It has similar functionality to “A” with the exception of several points:

  1. The main control panel is missing. The system is controlled using a mobile phone. More details;
  2. performs the functions of an additional immobilizer - the start of a trip is possible only if there is a unique tag or the owner’s mobile phone in the car;
  3. equipped with an additional engine blocking relay;
  4. there is a Bluetooth module;
  5. equipped with a contactless touch sensor StarLine EC-1.

“S” is a complete analogue of “AS” with the exception of the engine blocking relay and the StarLine EC-1 sensor (absent).

“X” – this is the designation for the most advanced products from the manufacturer. They are a dial-up system of several devices: the latest generation StarLine central unit, engine blocking relay, hood lock, GSM/GPS, search beacon. Also, when purchasing and installing, for example, StarLine X96 Pobedit from an official representative, the company provides a financial guarantee of protection against theft: in the event of theft, the owner will receive monetary compensation.

“V” – motorcycle alarms intended for ATVs, motorcycles and any other motor vehicles. Compatible with GSM and GPS modules.

Devices labeled M, i, R or L are designed to protect the car from theft, but, most often, this is their only task; they do not provide service capabilities.

“M” – line of search engines. Some representatives allow not only online monitoring, but also autostart with the ability to block the engine in case of an attempt to steal (StarLine M96);

“i” – additional immobilizers, which are an excellent remedy for repeaters (rods) by disabling the “Keyless” mode. More details;

“R” – engine blocking radio relay. Miniature devices that work in tandem with car alarms. When an alarm signal is received, the engine blocking is maintained even if the base (car alarm) is completely removed. More details;

“L” – electromechanical hood locks. The main task is to prevent unauthorized entry into the engine compartment. Simulates a break in the standard hood lock rod. Read more.

Are there any other reasons to buy compatible key fobs?

The demand for compatible key fobs is also supported by the fact that when operating a car there may be a need to preserve the original key. Regular key fobs are required by insurance companies in case of car theft and if you have a CASCO insurance policy that includes protection against theft.

But here you will need to contact a service center to reliably determine which car brands allow you to connect compatible StarLine key fobs to the standard alarm system. There are several options:

  • Bypassing the factory immobilizer using iKey is already supported by the system.
  • The alarm firmware is required with a file released after the creation of the key fob model.
  • Connecting the system bypassing the immobilizer via a digital bus.

About the compatibility of StarLine alarm key fobs with specific car models, you should only find out with technical specialists. Too much here depends on individual conditions and the equipment of the car.

Reprogramming the key fob

The first and main point is to switch your alarm system to “valet mode” mode. This mode is intended for servicing your security:

This button is most likely located inside your car and looks like a switch or lever.

Lever for switching to service mode

Typically, in order to switch to this mode, you will need to enter a security code. It is programmed specifically to protect your car from disabling the alarm system by intruders.

After that, you write the code you need. It should be in the instructions. Never throw away the instructions from your security kit. All the necessary information is there

It is important to remember that for each alarm everything is completely individual

For example, you need to know how many key fobs you can program. If you try to register a unique code on an extra key fob, it will be erased from the first one, and so on.

In fact, reprogramming a key fob is not a difficult task, however, you must be sure that both the key fob and the programming code are suitable for your alarm model. In any other case, it is better to contact specialists or replace the entire alarm kit.

What to do with old alarm models

You often have to deal with the problem of selecting a compatible key fob if the car is old, like the alarm model installed in it. On the one hand, different key fobs usually fit into one security system without additional modifications. But possible “inconsistencies” should also be taken into account. Thus, the StarLine B9 and B6 series are compatible only with one-sided key fobs, and models released after 2007 are able to work with older alarm systems, but not vice versa.

StarLine A4 and A2 key fobs are compatible regardless of the model, but if you add 24V to the list, then only one-sided modifications will work together. StarLine A91 can easily be connected to the B9 Dialog system, the same applies to the combination of A61 and B6 Dialog. There is compatibility of StarLine A8 and StarLine A6 transceivers with models B9 and B6.

When connecting additional key fobs, you should keep in mind that you will have to activate absolutely all devices again. So, if additional purchases are made. StarLine A8 key fobs to the StarLine A6 alarm system, then first the memory of the protection system is completely reset, and then all available key fobs are connected in series.

Reprogramming Basics

The main reason for the remote control not working is the battery or accumulator installed inside the structure. If the device cannot open car doors when buttons are pressed, and no icon or icon can light up on the display, this may mean that the device needs to be repaired and restored. In practice, replacing the battery in the alarm key fob solves the problem. To replace the battery on the car alarm key fob, you need to unscrew the bolts securing the back cover and simply remove it, and then replace the element.

Valet button for alarm control

As for how to program the alarm key fob so as not to encounter the problem of button failure and repair in the future, first of all the alarm must be configured in Valet Mode.

This mode allows you to:

  1. Assign new functions to the buttons of car anti-theft systems.
  2. Turn off the alarm in emergency mode.
  3. Connect new remote controls.

The Valet button is located inside the car; its location depends on where it was installed during installation of the alarm. To open this operating mode, you will need to enter a special code, which was initially programmed to protect the vehicle in the event of the signaling being turned off. The code itself must be indicated in the instructions for the anti-theft installation, so the service book should never be left in the car. Remember that the settings in each individual signal are different (the author of the video is Mikhail Autoinstructor).

For example, you need to know how many remote controls can be programmed. And if you try to enter the code on an extra remote control, then this combination will simply be erased from the original key fob. The procedure for programming the remote control and buttons is not complicated, but if you have never encountered it before, then it is better to entrust this matter to specialists.

As for the repair itself, qualified specialists can also repair the device. At home, repairs can be carried out by disassembling the remote control housing and dismantling the circuit. Typically, buttons stick as a result of dust or moisture getting on them. In this case, the repair will consist of cleaning and drying the board.

Compatibility of StarLine key fobs.

Currently it is possible to record key fobs:

  • key fobs E60, B64, D64 are interchangeable (with each other)
  • key fobs E90, B94, D94 are interchangeable (with each other)
  • StarLine A2 to StarLine A4 and vice versa (one-sided and two-sided key fobs). StarLine A2, A4 and 24V (one-sided key fobs.)
  • StarLine B6 to StarLine B9 and vice versa (only one-sided key fobs.)
  • One-sided key fobs from old versions of series B (black LCD key fob and block) to new versions (blue LCD key fob and block) and vice versa.
  • Key fobs StarLine B6 Dialog in StarLine A61 and vice versa, StarLine B9 Dialog in StarLine A91 and vice versa.

Attention. B6 Dialog and B9 Dialog have the main difference from B6 and B9 - these are Russified icons on the key fob, and the SN serial number looks like B91 W123456189 or B61 W123456189. If these signs do not apply to you, then replacing the B6 key fob with an A61 or B9 with an A91 key fob will not work.

Other options are not possible or do not guarantee correct operation. For example, if you register the StarLine A8 LCD key fob in StarLine A9, then there will be problems with autostart.

Instructions for setting the car in security mode with auto start:

  • Upon arrival at the desired point, you must stop, do not turn off the engine, and do not turn off the ignition.
  • Switch off the gear (put the gearshift knob in neutral mode).
  • Apply the parking brake (pull the handbrake).
  • Press button 1 on the key fob and hold it for 3 seconds until a sound signal appears. After the sound signal, only 30 seconds are allotted for the remaining steps.
  • Turn the key and remove it. At the same time, the engine remains running.
  • Make sure all doors, trunk and hood are closed.

After closing the last door, hood or trunk, the engine will stop working and the security mode will be activated on the car.
