It is especially good to install power steering on a VAZ. These cars themselves cannot please you with either good dynamics or powerful handling, so modernization will not hurt.
We've sorted out the advantages. Are there any disadvantages to this device? Sometimes drivers complain about insufficient reactive steering assistance. It often happens that while solving one problem, we lose in another matter. Here, too, the engineers were unable to eliminate both problems; one of them always makes itself felt.
There is inefficiency in fuel consumption in vehicles equipped with power steering. But this problem is completely solvable; it is enough to route the power steering pump not from the crankshaft of the power unit, as is usually done, but from the electric motor. In this case, everything changes: both the performance level of the mechanism and fuel consumption.

EPS, or electric power steering, is a mechanism built not on a hydraulic principle (that is, in connection with an oil fluid), but on the basis of current pulses. So, we have two types of amplifiers. What is their difference?

- The EUR is economical, which is something that the power steering cannot please.
- Power steering has more power than electric power steering.
How does an electric booster work?
The electric power steering on the VAZ-2107 starts to work and creates additional torque, which reduces the force required to turn the wheels. Moreover, it begins to work simultaneously with the driver turning the steering wheel. The device is able to reduce the load required to turn the steering wheel by 5.7 times.
In other words, if you applied a force of 20 kg before installing the device, then after that only 3.5 kg will be enough for a similar action. Stages of device operation:
Using a speed sensor, a normal relationship is ensured between the gain of the device and the intensity of vehicle traffic. If the speed is low, it becomes harder to turn the steering wheel. Therefore, the control unit understands that the gain needs to be increased. Conversely, if you are moving at high speed, then you need to apply less force. Therefore, the electric power steering is not involved in steering.

Salam to everyone! There are already articles on this topic, but since each case is unique in its own way, I will describe in detail how it all happened. I’ll say right away that the article is not for the faint of heart and not for those whose hands do not grow from their shoulders. There are many places where non-standard situations arise: somewhere to knock, somewhere to bend, somewhere to file, and somewhere to weld. Everything needs to be done reliably, carefully thinking through every step.
It all started with a “Shniv” gearbox, which was accidentally caught at a flea market and was given away for almost nothing.
Next, I began to look for other spare parts and came across the website of the manufacturer of these same devices: “Steering Components LLC.” I’ll say a few words about this resource. Since I had not installed power steering before this incident, the support representative was at one point inundated with a barrage of my chaotic and not entirely competent, or rather not at all competent, questions. The representative withstood my onslaught with dignity and brilliantly answered each of the questions, thereby creating in me strong confidence in the seriousness of their enterprise. In the process of communication, it turned out that a ready-made “GUR FOR VAZ 2101-2107 CLASSIC” kit is currently available for purchase. This is a kit that is installed in the corresponding car without any “collective farm” (in the worst sense of the word). But since this option is too expensive for me, and I already had the Chevy-Nivovsky gearbox in stock, after clarification of all my questions, the rest of the VAZ kit was additionally ordered without, accordingly, the gearbox.

In addition to the power steering kit itself, the fan, brakes, and steering wheel were modified. The fan remains the same, let's finish it a little.
You need to buy an additional Vacuum Brake Booster (VUT) from Niva, also known as the “nine-wheel” one, and you will also need a very rare part, this is the “Nivovsky” bracket for the VUT. The main brake cylinder (GTC) can also be supplied from the Niva, but I personally am not satisfied with the presence of brake hoses, so the GTZ was also supplied from the Nine.
Note from factory:
As it turned out, a small series of “classic fives” equipped with this same power steering was released. As I understand it, they did not change the standard VUT and GTZ, they simply shifted it forward by 6 mm using an adapter plate, and re-drilled the hole in the brake pedal with a shift of 6 mm (the old hole was pre-welded).
Yes, I almost forgot, the brake/clutch pedals will have to be removed, the plate at the bottom (under the gearbox) is slightly filed down and the brake pedal is bent to go around the thicker steering shaft and the gearbox housing protruding into the interior. In this regard, I don’t know what options there are, maybe some kind of Nivov pedal, in short, I “hit” it with a copper hammer and digested a nickel of the pedal itself, much like in this article.
You can also buy a steering bracket with a short shaft.
For convenience, the hood was removed, the fan was removed, the washer and antifreeze tanks were removed or moved aside, the old VUT was removed, the gearbox and pedals were removed. The clutch was also completely removed.
Power steering for VAZ 2107
The cars of the Volzhsky Automobile Plant of the classic series are not considered comfortable or as convenient as possible for movement. The main goal of the VAZ “classic” is to be an economy class car for home or work, so any options or the latest equipment systems were simply not provided for in domestic models.
A power steering wheel was not installed on the VAZ 2107: this mechanism was difficult to install in the systems of a rear-wheel drive car, and besides, such equipment significantly increased the market value of the car.
The first hydraulic boosters for the VAZ 2107 were designed and manufactured at AvtoVAZ. However, production batches could not boast of the latest equipment - power steering was sold as an additional option.
Advantages of a car with hydraulic power steering
Why do we even need additional equipment for the “seven” if the car already fully met all the requirements of its time?
Hydraulic power steering (or power steering) is an element of the vehicle’s hydraulic system, a structural part of the steering wheel. The main task of the power steering is to ease the driver’s efforts when driving a car, that is, to make steering turns easier and more accurate.
The VAZ 2107 power steering device is designed in such a way that even if it fails, the car can be driven, the steering wheel will just turn harder.
Technical inspection after installing the EUR on a VAZ 2107
Installing an electric booster is formally considered to be making changes to the design of the car and is an obstacle to undergoing maintenance without the appropriate certificates of conformity. It will not be possible to hide the fact that an ESD is installed on a VAZ 2107 - the device clearly manifests itself when checking the steering wheel play. This may become a basis for refusing to issue a document confirming the completion of a mandatory technical inspection.
To pass a technical inspection in accordance with the law, you need to find an official letter from the manufacturer about the compliance of this EUR model with the requirements for installation on a VAZ 2107. This letter (copy) must be taken with you when undergoing vehicle inspection.
Also, for maintenance, a document is required confirming the installation of the EUR at a VAZ-certified car service center.
If these two documents are available, the inspection station employees do not have the right to refuse to issue a certificate. In a conflict situation, you should request a written refusal indicating the reasons.
Power steering device
We can say that the “seven” is equipped with the simplest type of power steering. It contains several basic elements that make it easier to control the car:
- Hydraulic pump mechanism. It is through the cavities of the pump that an uninterrupted supply of working fluid is carried out and the necessary pressure is created.
- Steering gearbox with distributor. This device is designed to ensure the passage of air flow. The air directs the oil in two directions: into the cylinder cavity or in the return direction - from the cylinder to the tank containing the working fluid.
- Hydraulic cylinder. It is this mechanism that converts oil pressure into movements of the piston and rod, which reduces physical force when applying pressure to the steering wheel.
- Working fluid (oil). Oil is necessary for the stable operation of the entire power steering system, since it not only transmits movement from the pump to the hydraulic cylinder, but also simultaneously lubricates all components. Oil is poured into a special container and supplied through high-pressure hoses.
Typical equipment of the VAZ 2107 implies two schemes for the operation of the hydraulic booster: transmission of movement to the steering rack or to the steering shaft.
Installation of power steering
The installation of the power steering kit must be carried out by an authorized service center, and the owner is issued a special document. The certificate of completed work is presented to the registration and examination department of the traffic police and is the basis for making changes to the PTS. During the operation, you should strictly adhere to the instructions included with the equipment.
The sequence of work to install power steering on a VAZ 2107 is as follows:
- The car is driven onto a lift or inspection hole, the front part is suspended, and the wheels are removed.
- Using special devices, the rod ends are detached from the steering wheel bipod.
- Inside the car, the spline joint unwinds and the shaft on which the steering wheel is mounted is released.
- The bolts securing the machine to the spar are released, after which the mechanism is removed and put away.
- A new gearbox with an actuating hydraulic cylinder is installed in the vacant space.
- A pump is mounted on a bracket on the engine cylinder block, providing the necessary oil pressure in the system. The drive belt is thrown over the crankshaft pulley and tensioned in accordance with the instructions.
- The next step is the installation of pipelines, high-pressure hoses and their connection to the compressor and actuator.
- The system is filled with operating fluid in an amount of about 1.8 liters and checked for tight connections.
Finally, the hydraulic circuit must be pumped, or rather, any remaining air must be removed from it. To do this, you need to turn the steering wheel until it stops in one direction and the other several times. After this, the first test run of the engine is carried out and the system is operational. Almost immediately after starting, the force on the steering wheel should decrease sharply.
Before further operation of the VAZ-2107 vehicle, the wheel alignment angles are checked on a special stand. If necessary, camber and toe indicators are adjusted to the values established in the technical documentation. It should be remembered that the power steering makes it easy to perform maneuvers at low speeds and turn the steering wheel even on the spot without much difficulty.
Is it possible to install a hydraulic booster on a VAZ 2107
If we talk about equipping the “seven” with a non-factory power steering, then we can consider this operation appropriate and even necessary.
The installation of power steering on a VAZ 2107 is dictated by the complexity of the vehicle’s management in various operating modes. Only with a booster does the quality of control and reliability of driving on uneven roads improve.
Thus, structurally, the “seven” of any year of manufacture is ready for installation work, however, it is recommended to turn to specialists for this service, since it will be extremely difficult to install the power steering mechanisms yourself.
You should also take into account the disadvantages that the driver of a VAZ 2107 will inevitably encounter after installing a power steering wheel:
- high cost of the power steering kit;
- installation work is problematic (you need to pay for the services of a professional);
- the need for regular maintenance (checking the oil level, lubricant, etc.).
Installing power steering
If a motorist wants to install power steering on a VAZ-2107 with his own hands, which the manufacturer did not consider necessary to install in one of the most budget cars in the whole world, he can take one of two possible paths. Firstly, you can select the optimal steering rack that has power steering and then decide on its further location in the car. True, such an action will require enormous labor and money. Secondly, which is more expedient, you can buy a ready-made kit at an auto parts store that allows you to perform all possible most useful manipulations on the stationary steering rack.
Installing a hydraulic booster on a VAZ 2107
You should be very careful when choosing a power steering configuration. Thus, car enthusiasts on forums often write that factory hydraulic boosters from Lada Priora or Niva often jam, and during operation they require increased attention from the driver.
Therefore, it is more advisable not to chase new products from the domestic automobile industry, but to install standard power steering from the VAZ 2107. And since the “seven” is a rear-wheel drive car, the front suspension will use a mechanism with two pairs of transverse link elements at once. The entire steering system on the VAZ 2107, without equipping it with a hydraulic booster, consists of the following components:
- steering gear;
- three rods with steering tips;
- pendulum;
- swivel axles with rods.
Accordingly, in order to install power steering into this harmonious system, some modifications and upgrades will be required. The new power steering kit for the VAZ 2107 must include the following parts (you need to check their availability before purchasing):
- Hydraulic pump complete with pulley.
- Oil tank.
- Gear mechanism.
- Hydraulic cylinder.
- High pressure hose kit.
To install the power steering on the “seven” yourself, you may need a set of open-end wrenches and removable devices, however, without extensive experience working with car structures, it is not recommended to perform this work.

Steering device
The “Seven” belongs to the category of rear-wheel drive cars; the front suspension uses a layout with two pairs of wishbones. The steering of the vehicle in the standard configuration without power steering consists of the following components and mechanisms:
- systems of three rods with tips;
- steering engine;
- pendulum;
- rotary axles with rods.
The steering gear has a gearbox with a worm gear; its bipod is connected to a similar part of the pendulum by an intermediate rod. It ensures simultaneous rotation of both nodes at a certain angle. The external rods, which transmit force to the wheel axles, consist of two parts. With their help, the toe angle of the front wheels is set.
