Heater fan VAZ 2108, 2109: why it doesn’t work, where it is and how to remove it

Heater fan repair. VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099, 2113, 2114, 2115

If the heater fan does not work on your car, then this is a problem, regardless of the time of year!
Car windows fog up even from the breath of the driver, but especially from passengers who are celebrating something. Opaque glass is an immediate safety hazard. In short, fan problems need to be fixed immediately. Today we have a VAZ-2109 in our workshop. The owner is bothered by the crackling noise that accompanies the stove fan every time he turns on. To find the cause, the node will have to be removed. We will work “on the ground”. No special tool required.

Attention! First, as usual, disconnect the battery.

Using a Phillips screwdriver, unscrew the four screws and remove the protective casing, spreading its side walls apart.Using the same screwdriver, unscrew the two fan mounting screws.

We release the third support - the plastic protrusion - by moving the assembly forward.

Inside the cabin, remove the positive wire from the connector and release the negative wire, secured to the heater stud with a “10” nut.
Don't be tempted to use wire cutters. The twists that appear during assembly will not add reliability.
Using a screwdriver, pry up the rubber bushing and remove both wires out.Remove the fan from the air supply duct.

The operation is akin to a puzzle, because the fan can only be removed in a certain position. In a hopeless situation, the “corridor” can be slightly expanded by pulling the front wall of the box with your hands.

And here is the defect! The cracking noise was made by last year's leaves stuck in the impeller (except for those that had already dried out and crumbled to dust).

And yet, you shouldn’t “cut off the oxygen” by covering the air intake with tights - the fan can barely cope with its duties anyway.

Taking this opportunity, we will lubricate the electric motor bearings. For this:
using a screwdriver to pry up the plastic fasteners.. “halve” the body.
Use a puller (or other available tool) to remove the steel retaining ring.Remove the impeller from the motor shaft.
If it does not give way, try to carefully knock out the shaft with light blows of a hammer through a drift. An assistant (not shown in the picture) must hold the impeller suspended while simultaneously insuring the electric motor from falling. Use a screwdriver to pry up two spring clips.
. remove the motor cover and remove it from the housing.

Both bearings are now accessible for lubrication.

We carry out assembly in reverse order.

Why did the VAZ-2109 heater fan stop working and how to solve this problem

With the weather getting colder, driving an unheated car is no fun. There may be several reasons for a heater malfunction. From this article you will learn what to do if the fan of the VAZ-2109 stove does not work and how to get to it to replace it.

Troubleshooting or why the heater fan stopped working

If faults appear in the electrical circuits, the fan simply will not turn on. This can be determined by the value of the coolant temperature; the index arrow will move to the red zone of the scale. To troubleshoot in this case, reduce the load on the engine to idle speed and turn on the interior heater. Then open the tap to supply coolant to the heater radiator. Start coasting until you come to a complete stop.

Always start looking for the cause of a malfunction with the electric motor switch. To do this, open the hood and disconnect the sensor terminal. To continue testing, you will need a piece of wire with which you need to short-circuit the 2 wires that go to the terminal. In this case, insulate the jumper so that it does not come into contact with the ground. Start the car, if there are no other problems, the fan will start working. But it will work constantly until you turn off the car.

If after your actions the fan does not work, then open the cover of the mounting block and check the fuses on it to see if they are working. If the fuses are good, but the fan still does not work, then the problem lies in the electric motor.

To test the motor you will need 2 insulated wires to connect the motor terminals directly to the battery. If the fan starts working, check where the air flow is directed; if it goes under the hood, then everything is correct, but if not, then you need to change the polarity of the wires that you connected to the battery.

As can be seen from the above, the main reasons why the fan does not turn on is a malfunction of the relay or system wiring.

How to replace the heater motor

Very often, when a creaking noise appears when the stove is turned on, it indicates a malfunction of its motor or its imminent failure. In this case, you will need to replace the heater motor. There are also cases when you need to replace a heater fan; the operating principle for replacing a motor and a fan is very similar.

  • Crosshead screwdriver.
  • Ratchet with a head 10 mm in diameter.
  • Flat screwdriver.

Replacing a VAZ stove fan is not a difficult job, the main thing is to clearly know what exactly you will do and in what order.

  1. Remove the plastic cover of the heating system; it is located in the engine compartment of the car and is held on by five bolts.
  2. Slide the heater motor protective cover; to do this you will need to remove the rubber band that acts as a hood seal.
  3. When removing the fan with the motor, unscrew the 2 mounting bolts that secure them.
  4. Then return to the cabin and find the positive wire plug under the steering wheel and unhook it.
  5. The next step is to unhook the negative wire; to do this, unscrew the fixing nut using a ratchet.
  6. Return to the engine compartment and remove the heater motor.
  7. Replace faulty parts.
  8. Reassemble everything in reverse order.

Try not to mess up anything with the connections of the electrical circuit, otherwise you will have to disassemble everything again.

It should be noted that any owner of a VAZ-2109 can handle the job, and the price is 1,500 rubles—about the cost of a new motor complete with a fan.

How to disassemble a fan motor

If the stove fan does not work and you do not want to buy a new one, but prefer to deal with the problem yourself, you will need to disassemble the motor itself.

  1. Unscrew the 2 fan mounting screws.
  2. Unhook the fan itself; to do this, disengage its support.
  3. Tear off the foam seal on the right side of the casing.
  4. Remove the fan shroud support.
  5. Using a screwdriver, release the plastic latches of the casing.
  6. Using a screwdriver, pry up the 2 spring latches and unhook them.
  7. Now you can remove the cover from the motor.
  8. Pull out the motor, and the heater motor impeller will also come out with it; do not remove it so that the balancing is not disturbed.
  9. Unscrew both screws that hold the brush holder.
  10. Remove the 2 cage nuts.
  11. Remove the brush holder.
  12. Perform a visual inspection of the collector. If there are scratches or burns, it needs to be cleaned with fine-grained sandpaper. If there is more serious damage that cannot be repaired, replace the motor.
  13. Reassemble everything in reverse order.

If you already have experience in repairing electric motors, then it will not be difficult for you to cope with this, however, sometimes it is easier to replace a broken motor with a new one than to suffer from repairing the old one and extending its life for a very short time.

Why the VAZ-2109 stove fan does not work and how to fix it

A stove in the interior of a VAZ-2109 car is necessary in winter. Therefore, if for some reason its fan stops working, the car owner begins to seriously worry and takes all actions to solve the problem. This article will discuss the reasons for the failure of the VAZ-2109 stove fan and methods for identifying them.

Functions of the VAZ-2109 stove fan

The VAZ-2109 car heater is designed to heat the vehicle interior. It also helps get rid of glass fogging from inside the car. Its heating power is designed to ensure that at 25 degrees below zero, an optimal thermal regime will be maintained inside the car - from 16 degrees Celsius.

One of the main elements of a car heater is a fan. It is needed in order to drive air from the external environment, which enters the heating device through the radiator. Cold air undergoes a warm-up procedure and enters the car interior already warm.

    What is a stove fan

A car heater, which is popularly called a stove, is designed to perform a simple and at the same time important function - heating the interior. In addition, the device helps eliminate fogging of windows in cold and damp weather. During normal operation of the heating system, the temperature in the interior of the “nine” should be maintained at +20 ˚С with the same indicators outside, but only with a minus sign. In the legs, with maximum heating mode, the value should be maintained at +25 ˚С. One of the important components of the stove, in addition to the radiator, is the fan. The purpose of this device, its malfunctions and repairs should be considered in more detail.

    Purpose of the device

The purpose of the motor is to increase the efficiency of the heating system and air circulation in the car. Its operation is based on air intake from outside and its subsequent supply into the cabin through the radiator. As a result of the air flow passing through the heat exchanger, the air enters the cabin already warmed up.

Where is the motor located on the VAZ 2108/09

The heater motor on the VAZ 2108/09 is installed in a niche in the engine compartment in front of the windshield, which is radically different from the design of the heater of classic Zhiguli cars, which have a fan installed in the cabin. The unit is an electric motor with an impeller mounted on it, through which air is pumped into the cabin.

    Connection diagram

To make it easier to find possible faults with the fan, an installation diagram may sometimes be required, the main components of which are:

    • fuse mounting block;
    • egnition lock;
    • additional resistor;
    • fan motor;
    • operating mode switch.

serega-tmn, I know where it is! Thanks for the advice! I know the whole system! I just don't know where to start! I heard from our mechanics that if it beeps, then the engine will soon die! But I didn’t think it would be so soon! For two weeks I drove with an unbearable squeak! At first it was still possible to hit the engine and it would stop squeaking, but then it only began to squeak more strongly from the impact! Can anyone else help with other advice?! I constantly lose antifreeze and brake fluid somewhere into the unknown! I constantly top up, but I don’t notice any leaks! Even when the temperature outside was -16, the car could overheat from half a liter of lack of antifreeze! In the cabin, the stove doesn’t run anywhere! HBO was installed, but I unhooked it (closed the cylinder, hooked the fuel hose directly to the carburetor, bypassing the valve), did not remove the gearbox! Can a gearbox “eat” antifreeze?! And where does the brake fluid go?! Damn paranormal car! :)

Replacing the heater motor on a VAZ-2108-2109

The fan (motor) of the heater provides airflow to the car and increases the efficiency of the heater. If it malfunctions, the quality of interior heating deteriorates significantly. Extraneous sounds may appear that distract you from the road and are very annoying. The only way out is to repair or replace the failed unit. As a rule, car enthusiasts immediately go to a service station and shell out considerable sums for performing such work. For what? As a rule, changing the heater motor on a VAZ-2108-2109 is a matter of 30-40 minutes.

    Basic faults

The first thing to do is figure out the reason. Start the car, switch the heater to different speed settings and listen to the sounds of the motor. If after turning on the blower no action occurs and no sound appears, then the fan simply does not work.

If the motor starts only at third speed, the cause of the malfunction may be the resistor installed in the switch (such a malfunction occurs quite often on VAZ cars).

Let's figure out what could be the reasons for the stove failure. There are several of them:

    1. The fuse has failed. The first thing you should do is check the integrity of the fuse that powers the heater fan. The cause of the device failure may be a small short circuit. Please note that one fuse link can power not only the motor, but also the clutter lighting, heated mirrors and other devices. Therefore, if the stove fails, check the functionality of other devices.
    2. Poor contact in the mounting block. This problem is common both in domestic cars and among foreign cars. The problem can be corrected by simply cleaning the contact group or pulling the contact.
    3. Ignition relay malfunction. The control device tends to stick. In this case, the heating system fan will turn on only when the engine is warm. If the malfunction manifests itself in this way, then it is advisable to immediately check the relay and, if necessary, install a new one.
    4. The airflow turns on only when you switch to third speed. Here you need to know the design of the device. The bottom line is that the first and second positions involve connecting additional resistance. At the third speed, switching occurs directly. Therefore, the fault can be eliminated by simply replacing the resistor.

    1. The switch is broken. Often the switch itself can be the cause of problems. To check it, you should use a regular 12-volt light bulb with wires soldered to it. Proceed in the following sequence:

    – turn off the central part of the console to gain access to the switch (nothing should stop you from performing the check);

    – start the car and connect one of the wires to the “minus” (car body). Use the second wire to alternately touch the output of the first, second and third speeds.

    Now take stock. If the lamp lights up in all cases, then the switch is operational. If the light does not light, then move the wire to the “plus” of the switch. If the lamp does not light up here, we can conclude that there is a break in the motor circuits or a failed fuse;

    – fan failure. If the switch is working properly (voltage is supplied) and the motor itself does not show any signs of “life”, then the cause of the problems may be the poor quality of the contact connection at the “minus”. The second option is to flood the engine brush.

Operating principle and causes of malfunction

Let's take a quick look at how the heating system generally works. To adjust the temperature, you open or close the tap of the heating device. After this, well-heated coolant begins to flow into the radiator, which is a source of heat (on a warm engine, the coolant temperature can be 90-95 degrees Celsius).

By switching the speed modes of the fan motor, you can set the speed of its operation. The volume of warm (cold) air entering the cabin directly depends on this. It all depends on the position of the tap - whether it is open or closed. In the future, using panel dampers, you can regulate the air supply and direct it throughout the cabin - to the windshield, legs and into the cabin, and so on.

Features of replacing the stove on a VAZ-2108-2109

So, if strong squeaks, squeals or complete failure of the fan appears, it needs to be replaced. This is done in the following sequence:

    1. Prepare the necessary tools - a 10mm socket, a Phillips screwdriver and a handle with a ratchet.
    2. Open the hood of the car and unscrew the five screws that secure the plastic trim to the windshield. Remove it completely and set it aside.
    3. Pull out the hood seal (it will also interfere with operation).
    4. Pull out the protective casing, behind which the fan motor itself is located.

    1. Unscrew the two mounting bolts that secure the motor to the car body.
    2. Get into the passenger compartment and under the instrument panel on the driver's side, find the positive fan wire and discard it. Here you will find the “minus”, which is fixed with a nut - unscrew it using a ratchet handle and a suitable socket on “10”. There is no other way to turn off the voltage from the motor, because the power wires are directly soldered to the device.
    3. Remove the engine (to do this you will have to twist it a little to choose the optimal position).

    1. Make repairs if possible. If you don’t have the time and the necessary knowledge, just replace it.
    2. Install a new motor and return all parts in reverse order.

    Replacing the stove fan (motor)

I think that many owners of not only the VAZ 2109-2108, but also other domestic cars encountered a problem when, when the heater was turned on, the motor began to howl like a pig.

So, you can, of course, lubricate the whole thing, but practice shows that this is not enough for a long time and a terrible squeal or creaking, call it what you want, appears again.

In this case, it is necessary to replace the fan, or more precisely, the motor assembly itself.

To carry out this repair procedure, we will need the following tools:

    • crosshead screwdriver
    • Head for 10
    • Ratchet handle

The procedure for removing and installing the heater motor on a VAZ 2109-2108

First of all, you need to open the car hood and unscrew the 5 bolts securing the plastic trim, as shown in the photo:

And remove it so that it doesn’t get in the way in the future:

Now you need to remove the hood seal:

To then easily pull off the protective cover, under which the heater motor on the VAZ 2109-2108 is located:

After which access to the fan is open:

As you can see from the picture above, you need to unscrew the two mounting bolts that are located on the sides of the motor:

Well, then you will have to suffer a little. The fact is that on the VAZ 2109-2108 the power wires are soldered directly to the motor, and the terminals are connected to the electrical wiring inside the car. To put it mildly, the decision is simply idiotic. Now, in the cabin, by putting your hand under the panel on the driver’s side, we find the positive wire plug and disconnect it:

In the same area there is a negative wire, and there are even more problems with it, since it is secured with a nut, and in order to unscrew it, you must first feel it with your hand, and then use a socket and a ratchet to do this work. Immediately from the passenger compartment, you can insert these wires through the rubber seal in the hole in the body - it is visible in the top photo - from there two wires enter the passenger compartment.

And now, from the outside, turning the heater motor at different angles, we find the most convenient position, and remove it through the right side (in the direction of travel of the car):

And finally remove it from the engine compartment, as shown in the photo below:

If the part needs to be replaced, you need to buy a new stove fan, the price of which for a VAZ 2109-2108 is about 500 rubles for one motor. And if you buy it complete with the case, the price will be about 1000 rubles. We carry out the installation in reverse order.
