What to do if the heater fan on a VAZ 2114 does not work

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION OF THE VAZ 2114 OVEN

The design features and operating principle of the heating system are identical in almost all VAZ models. When you turn on the heater using a regulator located inside the car, the system supplies antifreeze to the radiator (the temperature of which after warming up is approximately 90 degrees). Next, the fan is turned on and can operate at one of three speed modes.

The fan creates a directed air flow that circulates from the outside of the heating system into the vehicle interior. Using control flaps, the driver can choose one of three heating zones - feet, windshield or car interior.

The VAZ 2114 stove fan is one of the key parts of the entire heating system, when it fails, the heating efficiency decreases to almost zero. If the heater fan does not work, then the hot air heated by the radiator simply does not enter the cabin in the required quantity, and it may take 2-3 hours to heat the car, which should normally take 5-10 minutes.

Stove motor failure

Heater motor

The heater motor may burn out over time, but before you start replacing it, check all fuses, the ignition relay, and the heater temperature switch for integrity. If all this is in order, the problem is with the motor. It must be replaced by first disassembling and removing the dashboard. We described in detail how to do this above. You also need to remove antifreeze or antifreeze from the system and turn off the heater valve.

After removing all the pipes, pull out the old stove and install a new one in its place. After checking the performance of the heater, you can fill the cooling system with the previously drained liquid.

CAUSES OF HEATING SYSTEM MALFUNCTION

If the VAZ 2114 stove does not work, then the reasons for this must be sought among the following possible malfunctions:

  • Fuse problems

A failed stove fuse is one of the most common, and at the same time easy to repair faults.
The fourteenth is equipped with a heater fuse of type F7, with a current strength of 30 A. It is worth noting that a failed heater fuse will also cause the cigarette lighter, glove compartment lighting, electric water supply pump to clean the headlights, and rear window heating to fail, since all these systems operate from one fuse.

Situations often occur when installed fuses blow out one after another - the reason for this may be a short circuit, to identify the source of which you will have to go through the entire safety circuit

  • Lack of contact inside the mounting block

Also a fairly common problem, the cause of which is the oxidation of wires during operation. The solution is quite simple; you need to sort out the wiring in the block in which they are fastened in front of the mounting block, and, if necessary, replace the contact group.

  • Problems with the ignition relay

A stuck ignition relay can also be the reason why the heater fan on a VAZ 2114 does not work. This is revealed quite simply - if the fan starts working only when the car’s engine has completely warmed up, then the problem is due to the ignition relay. To eliminate them, you will need to completely replace the relay.

  • The stove does not work in speed modes 1 and 2

If the fan turns on only at maximum speed (there are 3 in total), then the heater resistor needs to be changed. The design features of the heating system are such that in speed modes 1 and 2 the fan is powered through an additional resistor, and in mode 3 - directly from the battery.

  • Fan motor problems

If the VAZ 2114 cooling fan does not work, but all of the above problems have been eliminated, then one reason remains - a failed VAZ 2114 heater motor. It can either burn out or have poor contact with the power supply due to loose mass, and the fan brushes also often get stuck.

You will need to replace the heater motor with a new one, because if it starts to “stand out”, then this will happen repeatedly in the future.

Blown cylinder head gasket

Ineffective operation of the stove may occur due to a burnt-out cylinder head gasket. The cause can be determined by certain signs:

  • the coolant smells like a mixture of gasoline and exhaust gases;
  • the smell of antifreeze appears in the engine oil;
  • White thick smoke comes out of the muffler.

The appearance of white smoke cannot go unnoticed, so when this sign appears, you need to check and replace the gasket.

The electric motor is actively involved in the operation of the stove; it often breaks down and burns out. Replacing it with a new element is not in all cases the only solution to the problem. There is a possibility that the motor has not burned out, then it can be repaired. You need to check all operating modes of the stove and make sure that the ignition relay is working.

In order to avoid problems with the stove in the future, you need to periodically disassemble and clean the radiator and pipes, change the filter on time, add antifreeze, securely fix the tap, and then your stove will reliably delight you with warmth.

REPLACING THE HEATING MOTOR (FAN)

When the reason why the heater fan on the VAZ 2114 does not work has been identified, it is necessary to begin eliminating it. There are a sufficient number of fans on the market in different price categories: from cheap Chinese models, the quality and service life of which are in question, to reliable and durable options, whose cost is an order of magnitude higher.

As evidenced by reviews from owners of fourteenth VAZs, the best option in terms of price-quality ratio are Luzar fans. The current cost of which, today, is about 1200 rubles.

Removing the heater fan on a VAZ 2114 is quite simple - it is located in a special container located in front of the windshield in the hood compartment. The only tools we need are a screwdriver and a set of keys. Let's consider the algorithm of actions by which the stove fan is replaced on a VAZ 2114:

  1. First of all, disconnect the negative terminal from the battery;
  2. In the cabin of the fourteenth, under the dashboard, there is a positive power wire for the motor; it must be disconnected;
  3. We move under the hood of the fourteenth. The fan casing cover is secured with two screws; they must be unscrewed;
  4. We remove the “ground” of the motor; to do this, you need to unscrew the nut that secures it to the body of the heater casing from below;
  5. Open the casing and unscrew the two screws that secure the fan;
  6. Next, unscrew the screws that secure the air intake grilles to the housing in front of the windshield. We take them off;
  7. Now you can remove the heater motor on the VAZ 2114, since all its fastenings have been removed. The fan is mounted on a hook located on the body - move it towards you and lift it;
  8. Once the motor is removed from the hook, you will need to rotate it 90 degrees so that it comes out of the casing smoothly and remove it.

Replacing the heater motor on a VAZ 2114 is performed in the same way in the reverse order. As you can see, there is nothing complicated here, and all repair work can be done at home without any problems. Have a nice ride!

Replacing the stove light

Most often, car enthusiasts perform just such a replacement, since the backlight of the VAZ 2114 stove control in its original form is quite dim and often breaks.

In order to change it to a new one, you will need:

  • screwdriver;
  • pliers;
  • knife;
  • new LEDs that will be installed to replace light bulbs.

The entire replacement is done very simply and in just a couple of steps, for this you need:

  1. Disconnect the terminals from the battery.
  2. Disassemble the torpedo at the location of the regulator.
  3. Remove the old lamps (one of them is located directly on the regulator, and the second is on the air flow adjustment levers). This should be done extremely carefully, since the lamps are fragile.
  4. Install new LED lamps.
  5. Perform a performance check (this should be done with the torpedo disassembled).
  6. If the circuit is in good condition and the lamps are on, then reassemble.
  7. Connect the terminals to the battery.

FAULTY THERMOSTAT

With the thermostat not working, the coolant circulates in a large circle, while bypassing the small circle. The problem of a faulty thermostat is solved radically. It needs to be replaced with a new one. Many drivers, knowing about the low quality of their native thermostats, do not wait for it to fail and replace it with an imported analogue. Thermostats “Vernet”, “WAHLER” and “GATES” have proven themselves well.

It is not recommended to purchase Chinese models. They use low-quality steel, which looks like stainless steel. Such a device will not last long.

  1. Before starting work, you must drain the antifreeze. To do this, remove the protective cover. Place a container for antifreeze under the drain hole and unscrew the lid. Be careful. If you have just arrived, the liquid may be heated to 70 degrees or higher. Don't get burned. And best of all, let the engine cool down. And one more small note. Cover the generator to prevent liquid from getting into it. To do this, you can make a simple device from a plastic bottle.

    When you are sure that the coolant flows strictly into the placed container, you can unscrew the cap on the expansion tank. Wait until all the antifreeze drains out, close the drain caps on the radiator and expansion tank.

  2. Now we will get to the culprit of the cold stove. First you have to remove the air filter. To do this, you need to unscrew the screws and loosen the clamp that holds it.
  3. Loosen the two clamps connecting the hoses to the thermostat and remove the screws holding the thermostat. Now you can remove it.
  4. You definitely need to clean the mirror with a stationery or other knife and wipe it with a rag.

Installing a new thermostat is done in the reverse order.

  1. The new thermostat is installed in its place and secured with screws.
  2. The hoses are connected and secured with their own clamps. But before putting on and securing the hoses, they must be checked for serviceability. If they are worn out, it is recommended to replace them.
  3. Before adding antifreeze, check the drain cap on the radiator and expansion tank to make sure they are closed.
  4. Remove the pipe on the throttle body heating.
  5. Now you can fill the coolant into the expansion tank, slightly above the level.
  6. By pressing on the nozzle, you expel excess air from it, but do not forget to place a dish under the hose. Antifreeze will leak into it. Secure the pipe in place with clamps, pour the leaked liquid back into the tank, and close the lid.
  7. Install the air filter and secure the protective cover.

New thermostat
Here are a few more reasons why the fan does not work:

  • Air in the radiator can cause the engine to overheat and the cooler not to turn on. To get rid of air pockets, you can simply remove the pipe from the throttle body, as you did when you changed the thermostat.
  • A clogged radiator also leads to similar consequences. Therefore, the radiator grille must be blown out using a compressor or pump.
  • The operation of the heater fan can be affected by low antifreeze levels. This is easy to check. If the coolant level in the expansion tank is significantly below the mark, it must be topped up.
