The weight of an iron garage depends on many parameters that must be taken into account when calculating the weight of the structure.
An iron garage is an inexpensive and fairly reliable shelter for a car. It will solve many pressing problems: it will hide the car from bad weather or the hot sun, accidental damage and prying eyes; you can carry out simple car repairs, diagnostics or other preventative work in it.
Usually, few people think about the weight of a building, but sometimes a situation arises when a car owner needs to know the weight of a metal garage, so in this article we will talk about the types of metal garages and provide calculations for buildings made of different facing materials.
Weight of a metal garage: how to calculate
An iron garage is an inexpensive and fairly reliable shelter for a car.
It will solve many pressing problems: it will hide the car from bad weather or the hot sun, accidental damage and prying eyes; you can carry out simple car repairs, diagnostics or other preventative work in it. Usually, few people think about the weight of a building, but sometimes a situation arises when a car owner needs to know the weight of a metal garage, so in this article we will talk about the types of metal garages and provide calculations for buildings made of different facing materials.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a precast concrete garage?
Advantages
The advantages of this type of garage made of concrete blocks, attractive to car owners, are as follows:
- Building a garage space does not take much time.
- A prefabricated garage is ordered as a one-piece kit with detailed instructions for constructing and strengthening the garage.
- If you decide to move, the structure can be disassembled and you can move it to a new location without any problems.
- No welding is required when installing reinforced concrete slabs into a single structure.
- Manufacturers present a number of options for such garages with a variety of individual parts and sizes of the garage itself, as well as its components.
- Prefabricated reinforced concrete garages are available for sale with a variety of garage space layout models. There are even options for possible openings-entrances to the cellar and options for installing a cavity for inspecting the car, varying in size.
What are the disadvantages of a prefabricated reinforced concrete garage?
- The components of the structure are very heavy; it will not be possible to handle it alone and without the appropriate technical equipment.
- Having built a garage according to the chosen project, you will not be able to modify it or remodel it in the future.
- High-quality delivery services for reinforced concrete tile material are not always provided. This creates a risk of their deformation, chipping and greatly complicates the assembly process and reduces their service life.
- The manufacturer may store the slabs incorrectly, this reduces their quality, which means the building will no longer be as durable.
Below you will see photos of reinforced concrete garages.
Choose a quality manufacturer that uses a proven delivery service.
Types of metal garages
Garages that have a frame made of steel structures (see Frame garage: how to build it yourself) are considered metal, although they can be sheathed with various materials.
They are divided into two types:
- All-welded structures are assembled from sheet steel and all elements are connected by welding. Such a garage cannot be disassembled and can only be transported in assembled form. An all-welded garage can be installed anywhere, it is particularly reliable against penetration and has strong connections.
- Prefabricated garages have bolted or anchored connections of parts; the structure can be disassembled and transported in a compact form. It is recommended to install this type on the territory of a personal plot or in a country house, not far from the house, so that there is supervision, since it has poor protection against burglary.

Important! In turn, prefabricated structures can have different cladding, and this also determines how much an iron garage weighs.
The following materials are used for lining the walls of the structure:
All these materials have different weights, so when determining the weight of the garage as a whole, this must be taken into account.
How to calculate the weight of a garage
Data on the weight of the transported structure may be needed in the following cases:
- When purchasing a garage and delivering it to a permanent location. If the building was purchased from a manufacturer, then the seller provides data on the weight of the order, but when the garage is purchased second-hand, then in this case the weight is often calculated by the buyer.
- When transporting a garage to a new location (owner moving, sale, garage for demolition, etc.). If the structure was built with your own hands, the owner may not know its true weight.
For a sample, we will calculate the weight of a metal garage 3 x 6 x 2 m2 (width x length x height) of an all-welded type, in which the lining is sheet steel 4 mm thick. This is the minimum standard size into which almost any passenger car will fit, well, except for minibuses.
- We calculate the area of all surfaces of the garage:
- Side walls: 2m x 6m x 2pcs = 24 m2.
- Gable roof including canopies: 2m x 1.9m x 6.2m x 2pcs = 47 m2.
- Rear, end wall and gate: 3m x 2m x 2pcs = 12 m2.
- Two triangular pediments, the approximate area of which is 4 m2.
- Floor (if any): 3m x 6m = 18 m2.
- Adds all the results obtained: 24 + 47 + 12 + 4 + 18 = 105 m2.
- For the walls we used sheet steel 4 mm thick; according to the table according to GOST, 1 m2 of such steel weighs 31.4 kg. We multiply the mass by the area: 105 m2 x 31.4 kg = 3297 kg.
- We obtained the weight of the sheet metal used to sheath the garage. But that is not all! Now you need to add here the mass of the gate frame and the garage itself; it is usually made from a large equal-flange angle.

Let’s not make detailed calculations now; accuracy is not particularly needed here. Let's take an approximate average value, according to some sources it is 1000 kg.
Important! If we add up all the obtained values, we will see that the weight of a metal garage, all-welded, with sheet metal cladding 4 mm thick is 4297 kg.
Weight table for other materials
As mentioned above, garage cladding can be made not only from sheet metal. To correctly calculate the mass of the garage, you need to know their weight. In the table below we indicate these parameters for some of the materials most commonly found in garage decoration.
Name of material | Unit measurements | Weight, kg |
Galvanized corrugated sheet | 1 m2 | 6 |
OSB sandwich panels | 1 m2 | 18–20 |
Metal siding sandwich panels | 1 m2 | up to 25 |
Metal profile | 1 m2 | 4–9 |
Corrugated sheet | 1 m2 | 5–16 |
The weight of sandwich panels depends on the thickness of the insulation, and the metal profiles and corrugated sheets depend on the thickness of the metal. If you doubt the correctly determined parameters of the cladding, then to be on the safe side, it is recommended to take the maximum value.
Important! The choice of vehicle and the safety of transporting the structure depend on how accurately the weight of the garage is calculated.
Materials and tools
What basic tools and materials are needed to build a reliable structure for vehicles. First of all, this is a frame that will be a reliable and stable support. Materials that can become such a frame are rectangular profile pipes, corners, galvanized profiles - they are quite often used for plasterboard structures.
All these materials, each in their own way, are perfect for construction. However, the best option would be rectangular pipes that bend well and do not break. The main indicator is their strength. To work with this material, you can use both welding and threaded connections.
When it comes to a metal garage project, everyone must act individually. After all, the size of the structure, the type of roof, the material for the cladding, as well as the financial capabilities of the future owner of the garage are taken into account.
In order for a collapsible garage to become part of a summer cottage, for example, there are many different plans and diagrams. Among them you can find a lightweight option. It is suitable for members of the male population who do not have a welding machine, or they simply do not know how to handle it. In this case, the entire structure will be mounted on threaded connections. Therefore, for work the master will need:
- Locksmith kit, which includes standard tools.
- Ten and twelve wrenches.
- Electric drill and drill bit with a diameter of 6.5 millimeters;
- Grinding machine with a set of wheels for metal cutting and grinding.
- Screwdriver.
How much does a wagon garage weigh?
- list of messages
from a couple of tons to 10.
My 6x4 weighs almost 7
the other day an acquaintance was transporting
made of sheet 0.5 cm thick, without insulation weighs 4 tons
How was the weight determined?
I sell it for how much I bought it - solely from words. I agree, it wouldn’t hurt to refer to someone else’s authorship in the previous statement
It's like fishermen do.
I caught such a fish yesterday. Just wondering. There are no scales on the handle, it’s unlikely that they’ll send a specialist to weigh it, so people come up with their own ideas: weight, price, etc.
I admit that this is exactly the case
I couldn’t take the 5 ton, which means it weighs more. I lifted the 7-ton truck with great effort.
No fishing standards
