Despite this, driving a “five”, or any other “classic”, requires considerable physical strength.

Inside the steering column of the “five” there is a cardan transmission that leads to the gearbox. The VAZ steering shaft crosspiece is used for connection. The entire mechanism is quite reliable and can withstand very long runs. All parts are made from high quality steel and are carefully inspected before assembly or sale. Thanks to this, there are very few accidents of Lada cars due to complete failure of the steering, and repair of load-bearing parts is required only in case of serious damage.

The most complex part of the mechanism is the steering gear, which is based on a worm gear. Since the worm gear is initially characterized by gaps and is subject to wear, a special adjusting bolt is built into the gearbox housing. It presses the bipod shaft, preventing gaps from causing the wheel to wobble.

The steering gear mechanism is in an oil bath, thereby reducing its wear. Regular transmission oil, an analogue of TAD-17, is poured into the gearbox. The steering rods of the “five” are mounted on hinges protected by rubber boots. The steering does not require constant injection and lubrication, but it is necessary to periodically inspect the boots for integrity. To assemble or disassemble the rods, you will need special pullers; you can make them yourself.

How to remove the steering wheel on a VAZ 2106 video

Remove the steering wheel by sharply hitting the wheel rim from below with both hands in the area of the hubs. Now you can unscrew the nut completely and remove the steering wheel.

Install the new steering wheel and reassemble it in the reverse order of removal.

If you removed the steering wheel to replace the horn switch, you need to:

Unscrew the six screws securing the switch.
Remove the two middle bolt grommets and remove the switch.
Disconnect the wire from the slip ring.
Remove the switch springs (4 pcs).
Unscrew the three screws securing the slip ring and remove it.

Make the necessary repairs. Reassemble in the reverse order of removal. Install the VAZ 2106 steering wheel back onto the car.

How does an electric booster work?

Purpose and operation scheme of the trapezoid

The rod system serves as an intermediary between the steering shaft and the steering knuckles of the front hubs. The task of the mechanism is to synchronously turn the wheels in one direction or another, obeying the rotation of the steering wheel. The trapezoid is located under the engine at the level of the bottom of the car, attached to the body stiffening elements - the lower side members.

The part of the steering mechanism in question consists of 3 main parts:

the middle link is screwed to two bipods - a pendulum lever and a worm steering gear;
the right link is attached to the swing arm of the pendulum and the steering knuckle of the front right wheel (in the direction of travel of the car);
The left rod is connected to the gearbox bipod and the left front hub knuckle.

Trapezium levers mechanically connect the steering wheel with the mechanisms of the front wheels.
The middle link is a hollow metal rod with two hinges. Two side rods are prefabricated elements consisting of 2 tips - long and short. The parts are connected to each other by a threaded clamp, tightened with two bolts.

How does a trapezoid work:

The driver turns the steering wheel, rotating the shaft and shank of the gearbox. The worm mechanism transmits fewer revolutions to the bipod, but increases torque (force).
The bipod begins to turn in the right direction, dragging the left and middle rods with it. The latter transmits force to the right rod through the pendulum bracket.
All 3 elements move to one side, causing the front wheels to turn synchronously.
The pendulum arm, mounted on the second spar, acts as an additional hinged suspension for the system. In older versions of pendulums, the bipod rotates on a bushing, in new elements - on a rolling bearing.
Ball pins at the ends of all rods allow the trapezoid to move in one horizontal plane, regardless of the compression of the front suspension springs.

Replacing the steering column of a VAZ 2107

Replacing a steering column is a rather difficult task, but it can be done independently if you have some experience in car repair. You will need the following tools:

Wrenches 17 (socket and open-end).
Socket heads for 17 and 30.
Handle with ratchet.
Mount.
Hammer.
Collar.

The column is removed in the following order:

Disconnect the battery.
Remove the steering wheel.
Remove the steering shaft housing.
Remove the wire block from the ignition switch.
Remove the ignition switch.
Remove the steering column switches.

Unscrew the 3 bolts securing the column to the body. The procedure is not easy - the distance between the parts and the body is too small, the bolts are difficult to keep from turning. A handle with a ratchet will come in handy here, which will speed up the process.
Remove the column from the shaft. To do this, you need to knock the column off the tie rod splines using a pry bar. This must be done in jerks, resting your feet on the body.
Unscrew and remove the shaft seal installed at the bottom of the column.

After dismantling the old column, it is necessary to clean the seat from dirt. Before installing a new column, you should check the condition of its hinge joints and needle bearings. If everything is in order, you can begin installation, which is done in the reverse order of removal.

The second, longer method of removing the VAZ 2107 steering wheel

You will have to remove the VAZ 2107 steering wheel using a more complicated method if you do not have a suitable 24mm wrench (for working through holes); or you have problems with the signal.

But don’t worry, it’s not much more complicated here). You will just need a normal Phillips screwdriver. It is advisable that it is not very long. The fact is that on the back of the steering wheel there are 4 bolts. You unscrew them, and this will make it possible to remove the upper part of the steering wheel. Exactly - the one you click on for the signal.

Removed? Please note that two of the bolts have bushings, but the other two do not. Now, you can connect the signal terminal, or unscrew the nut holding the steering wheel on the shaft.

One person from the pair should pull the steering wheel, and the second should hit the drift attached to the end of the steering shaft with a hammer.

How to remove an old steering wheel

Use a short Phillips screwdriver to unscrew the screws on the back of the wheel. There are only four of them.

Don’t unscrew the nut all the way, leave it screwed on a few turns, otherwise you’ll get hit in the face by the steering wheel. You grab it with your hands, shake the steering wheel and pull it towards you.

Technical inspection after installing the EUR on a VAZ 2107

It will not be possible to hide the fact that an ESD is installed on a VAZ 2107 - the device clearly manifests itself when checking the steering wheel play.
