An alternative way to start the engine of a carburetor classic without an ignition key is with wires under the hood. To do this, you will need a piece of single-core cable, about 1.5-2 meters long. The startup order is as follows:
- We connect the “+” terminal of the battery to the “+” terminal of the ignition coil using a wire of about 1.5 meters.
- We also connect the second segment, 50 cm long, to the positive side of the battery, but take it in our hand.
- We disconnect the ignition terminal going to the starter from the interior braid and touch this terminal with the second end of the short wire.
This method is suitable exclusively for starting the engine of a carburetor classic VAZ. If the ignition switch is broken, then without the lock no light sources will work. To fix this, you need to disconnect the terminals from the lock and connect as described above.
Unlocking the steering wheel without a key
If the key is lost, but the steering wheel lock is turned on, then in order to drive normally without keys, it is not enough to start the car with wires. What to do if the steering wheel is locked?

Why does the starter relay stop working? There are several answers to this question. The problem may be due to outdated parts (the material deteriorates over time). The winding also burns out. In this case, the reason may lie in the combustion of nickels, which are located in the inner part of the relay itself.
However, for a novice driver who has not previously done repairs, it is necessary to find out where the VAZ starter relay is located. They will not only disassemble this part, but will also connect the relay. In this case the price will be minimal.
Starter solenoid relay
If the starter is safely removed from under the hood, it must be cleaned. Contaminants are removed from it. As for oxidized contacts, they are processed using sandpaper.
Diagnostics of the starter solenoid relay:
- The starter is located near the battery. In this case, 2 electrical wires are prepared, which must be of sufficient length. Wires intended for “lighting” are ideal. They are equipped with so-called “crocodiles”.
- Initially, the positive terminal is connected to the battery (the corresponding output of the solenoid relay) via one electrical wire.
- Then the other wire is connected to the battery terminal, which has a negative value.
- Finally, you need to touch the free unoccupied end of the electrical wire with a negative value. This contact must take place with the starter housing. Further actions will depend on the results obtained.
If during the connection process the solenoid relay makes a quick and distinct click, then it is operating normally. When the part does not show any signs of “life,” the solenoid relay must be repaired or completely replaced.
How to start a Zhiguli directly on the starter
If the problem is not in the lock, but in the wiring, and shorting the terminals does not help, you can try to start the Lada by supplying current directly to the starter, bypassing the lock, just as, for example, when the solenoid or starter relay does not work. This is done by closing the contacts using a screwdriver or a piece of thick wire.

There are two ways to start the car directly from the starter. The first, classic one, is to use a screwdriver to close the contacts of the power wire and the control of the solenoid relay. Burnout of valves. With late ignition, the mixture continues to burn throughout the exhaust phase, causing the valves to overheat and “popping” to occur in the exhaust manifold.

In order to implement this method, you will need to drill a hole located slightly above the keyhole. This way you destroy the locking mechanism. If you manage to open the lock, you won’t have any problems starting the engine.
But, unfortunately, after performing such manipulations you will have to spend a little money, since the ignition switch will be unsuitable for further use and will need to be replaced.
Therefore, before resorting to this method of starting a car
without a key, think about the appropriateness of this action.
Why adjust the ignition?
At the beginning of the article we already touched upon the problem of detonation. But that is not all. The fact is that an engine is a very precise device where all processes must take place on time. This is necessary so that the fuel mixture burns efficiently, thereby ensuring power delivery. If the mixture ignites at a large distance before TDC, detonation will occur. This is early ignition.
If the mixture ignites when the piston is already at top dead center, the mixture will not burn completely. As a result, you can not expect full power delivery. In addition, the car will definitely have increased fuel consumption, and the engine itself will operate unstably. This all indicates that the car has a late ignition.

Preparing a car for winter
So, preparing the car begins even before the cold weather begins. A little preparatory work will make it easier to start the power plant of this car at low temperatures.
The first thing you need to take care of is the battery. Before frost sets in, you need to carry out a full range of maintenance work on it - check the density of the electrolyte, and, if necessary, bring it to the required level. Also fully charge it.
If the engine oil has almost exhausted its service life, then you should not wait for this to happen and replace it while it’s still warm. The use of mineral oil is strictly not recommended. If in summer it is still suitable for use, then in winter such a little can lead to engine failure. At low temperatures it thickens greatly and when starting the engine, there is a possibility that the thick liquid will simply squeeze out the crankshaft oil seals.

- Creation of such a spark as is necessary to ignite the fuel-air mixture.
- Continuous sparking.
Principle of spark formation
When the ignition is turned on, current begins to flow to the contacts of the distributor breaker. When starting the engine, the ignition distributor shaft rotates simultaneously with the crankshaft, which, with its cam, closes and opens the low voltage circuit. The pulses are supplied to the ignition coil, where the voltage is converted to high voltage, after which it is supplied to the central contact of the distributor. Then the voltage is distributed through the slider across the contacts of the cover and supplied to the spark plugs via explosive wires. In this way, a spark is formed and distributed.

Why is adjustment needed?
If the ignition is set incorrectly, many problems arise:
- power is lost;

- fuel consumption increases;
- pops and shots appear in the silencer;

How to start a Zhiguli without a battery
If you don’t have a battery at hand at all (it was stolen, the battery has short-circuited, etc.), you won’t be able to just start the car. The fact is that the classic VAZ family (like most cars) uses a generator that requires external excitation. To excite the windings, you will need at least some kind of current source capable of delivering about 12 volts. You can try less, but if the source is very weak (like a lithium battery from portable electronics), it’s not a guarantee that it will work.
That is, without external power, nothing will work, but if it is available, you can start the Zhiguli without a battery using one of the methods described above (from a pusher, from a hill, from a curve, with a cable).
Before manipulation, it is advisable to isolate the plus terminal going to the battery to prevent short circuits during operation.
To excite the generator you need:
- Connect the negative contact of the current source to ground (for example, the generator housing or the negative terminal for the battery).
- Remove the excitation terminal (thin wire) from the generator.
- Connect the current source plus to the terminal on the generator.

- After starting the motor, remove the current source and return the excitation terminal to its place.

- After removing the column, you will have access to the ignition switch, to the wires running from the battery and starter to the ground cord.

Mostly the ground wire is black or green, but you should still check this so that the on-board system of the machine does not short-circuit. Use a tester to determine if the cord is a grounding cord.
