Welcome! The release bearing seems like such a small part in the clutch drive, but sometimes it causes so many problems!
It even gets to this point: the clutch on the car stops working altogether. Let's look at a few main questions about this bearing and find out how to properly replace it on a car. Note! You will need the following tools: a screwdriver and lubricant “LSTS-15” or “Litol-24” to lubricate the splines of the input shaft, but more on that a little later. Replacing the bearing requires removing the box, so the list should be supplemented with tools from the “Removal” section.

When to change the bearing?

Basically, when it fails, accompanied by an increase in noise when the clutch is depressed on the car. The noise of a worn bearing often comes in the form of a buzzing sound: you start to depress the pedal and then you hear extraneous noise in the place where the bearing is located - a direct sign that it has become unusable and needs to be replaced.

Note! I would like to note that the sound produced by the bearing will only appear when the clutch is depressed slightly, when the clutch is fully depressed, you will not hear any noise as such. Noise will not occur when the foot is completely removed from the pedal, unless the required clearance is not set between the clutch slave cylinder rod (red arrow in the image below) and between the clutch fork, indicated by the blue arrow. How do you understand that the clutch release bearing (hereinafter referred to as the clutch release bearing) has already reached the end of its service life and is time to change it? This question interests many VAZ 2107 car owners. And for good reason, because although this element can be called insignificant, a lot depends on it.

The service life of the clutch device on domestic cars depends not so much on the conditions of use of the car, but on its mileage. A car owner who likes to squeeze the gas all the way down and drive on the roads will need to change clutch elements more often than a driver who prefers a measured way of driving.

When the wear of the clutch elements reaches the point of no return, the device begins to slip if the engine picks up speed. If you regularly drive with such a clutch, then in the future, and maybe even on the next trip, the driven disk of the mechanism will overheat, which will not allow the driver to continue driving. And even get moving.

  • the clutch pedal falls to the floor, although the cable is fine;
  • while driving, when pressing the clutch pedal, a slight grinding noise is heard;
  • first gear does not engage, therefore, movement can only be started from second speed;
  • While driving, some noise appeared, which disappeared when the clutch pedal was depressed.

Replacing the release bearing on a VAZ 2101-VAZ 2107

Removal: 1) At the very beginning of the operation, you will have to remove the box from the car. (see details in the instructions: “Replacing the box on a VAZ”)

2) Now take a screwdriver in your hands and remove the springs securing the bearing to the fork.

3) Gradually pull along the shaft, in other words, pull the release lever towards you - it is removed from the shaft.

4) After removing the bearing, unclench the ends of the spring attached to the gear shift fork. After decompressing, simply remove this spring. If you find the bearing is in good condition, but the spring is not, replace the spring with a new one and continue to use your bearing. The spring is fine, but the bearing is not - take the spring and insert it into the new part.

Note! Please note that sometimes the bearing is still intact, but has already traveled quite a few kilometers, so you should not exclude the possibility of failure in the near future.

Clutch device VAZ 2107

The clutch is controlled by a pedal inside the cabin. When you press it, the clutch is disconnected from the gearbox, and when you press it, it engages. This ensures a smooth start of the car from a standstill and silent gear shifting. The node itself consists of a large number of elements interacting with each other. The VAZ 2107 is equipped with a single-disc clutch with a central spring .

Clutch basket

The clutch consists of two discs and a release bearing. The clutch used on the VAZ 2107 is simple and reliable. The pressure (drive disk) is installed on the flywheel. Inside the basket there is a driven disk connected to the gearbox input shaft with special splines.

The clutch can be single-disc or multi-disc. The first is considered more reliable. The clutch functions as follows. When you press the pedal, the release bearing mounted on the input shaft pulls the petals of the basket towards the engine block. As a result, the basket and driven disk are disengaged, and it becomes possible to change speeds.

For the VAZ 2107, wheels from the VAZ 2103 (for engines up to 1.5 liters) and VAZ 2121 (for engines up to 1.7 liters) are suitable. Externally they are very similar and have a diameter of 200 mm. These discs can be distinguished by the width of the linings (29 and 35 mm, respectively) and the presence of a 6 mm mark in one of the grooves of the VAZ 2121 damper.

Clutch disc

The driven disc is sometimes called a drum. There are pads glued to it on both sides. To increase elasticity, special slots are made on the disk during the manufacturing process. In addition, the drum is equipped with eight springs located in the plane of the disk. These springs reduce the frequency of torsional vibrations and reduce dynamic loads.

The drum is connected to the gearbox, and the basket is connected to the engine. During movement, they are pressed tightly against each other, rotating in the same direction.

The single-disk scheme used on the VAZ 2107 is distinguished by its reliability, comparative cheapness and ease of maintenance. This clutch is easy to remove and repair.

The driven disk for a 1.5 liter engine has dimensions of 200x140 mm. It can also be installed on a VAZ 2103, 2106. Sometimes a drum from a Niva (VAZ 2121) is installed on a VAZ 2107, differing in size (200x130 mm), a reinforced damper system and a large number of rivets.

Clutch selection

When purchasing a new clutch kit for the VAZ 2107, experts recommend being guided by the following criteria. When assessing the driven disk:

  • the surface of the linings must be smooth and uniform, without scoring, cracks or chips;
  • all rivets on the disk must be the same size and located at an equal distance from each other;
  • there should be no oil stains on the disc;
  • there should be no play in the places where the linings and springs are attached;
  • The manufacturer's logo must be applied to the product in one way or another.

When choosing a basket, you should pay attention to the following points:

  • the casing must be stamped, without cuts or scratches;
  • the surface of the disk must be smooth and uniform, without cracks or chips;
  • the rivets must be identical and strong.

The most popular brands are the following.

    Valeo (France), specializing in the production of excellent quality brake system elements. The characteristic features of the Valeo clutch are soft operation with a clear engagement moment, reliability, and long service life (more than 150 thousand kilometers). However, such a clutch is not cheap.

The choice of clutch should be approached comprehensively and the choice should be made after examining the product and receiving expert advice.

Why it stalls - reasons and their elimination

The clutch usually slips due to the following:

  • There is no gap between the pressure bearing and the fifth basket;
  • the clutch drive is not adjusted;
  • oil gets on the discs;

Depending on the cause of this problem, the repair progress is determined. If the problem is with the diaphragm spring, it will have to be replaced with another one. When the friction linings wear out, the driven disk is replaced. When repairing/removing linings, the gaskets are checked. If they are in poor condition, they are also replaced with new ones. If oil gets on the driven disc, you will need to treat it with kerosene and clean it with fine sandpaper.

Disc oiling

Grease may get on any side of the flywheel and pressure plate due to an increased oil level in the gearbox housing or a leak in the rear crankshaft bearing. To solve the problem, diagnostics are performed and the cause of the leak is eliminated - the seals are replaced, then the spare parts are cleaned.

Removing the gearbox

When replacing the clutch on a VAZ 2107, the gearbox does not need to be completely removed, but only moved enough so that the input shaft disengages from the basket. What you need to stock up on

Despite all the shortcomings and simplicity of the car, when repairing you will need a special tool, which you cannot do without. First of all, you need a kingpin - a metal tube of suitable diameter (it can even be hollow inside). With its help you will center the position of the driven disk relative to the clutch basket. Depending on the age of the car, its technical condition, and the cleanliness of the driver, replacing the VAZ-2107 clutch may take different times. The price of the entire set will be about 2000-2500 rubles. Of course, we need to mention the units that need to be installed new.

Firstly, this is the entire clutch kit - basket, bearing, driven disc. Secondly, be sure to change the bolts and washers that secure the disk to the flywheel. Thirdly, if you plan to replace the VAZ-2107 clutch cylinder, you still need to buy brake fluid and new hoses. Fourthly, you will need to assess the condition of the flywheel crown. Fifthly, you are removing the driveshaft, so it is possible that the crosspieces have become unusable and also require replacement. Sixth, the condition of the box cushion and outboard bearing is unknown. In other words, this miracle car can bring many “surprises” to a car owner who does not monitor its technical condition.
