Replacing cables and parking (hand) brake lever
The mechanically actuated parking brake system acts on the rear brake mechanism. |
Figure 8.9. Parts of the parking brake drive: 1 – lever; 2 – button; 3 – thrust spring; 4 – latch rod; 5 – cover; 6 – front cable; 7 – rear cable guide; 8 – spacer sleeve; 9 – tension spring; 10 – spacer bar; 11 – lever for manual drive of the pads; 12 – rear cable |
The hand brake is mechanically driven from lever 1 (Figure 8.9). The middle part of the rear cable passes through the groove of guide 7, the tension of which is adjusted with a nut screwed onto the threaded end of the front cable. A spacer sleeve 8 is installed between the guide 7 and the adjusting nut. |
At the rear ends of the cable there are tips, each of which is connected to the hook of the lever 11 for the manual drive of the shoes. This lever is pivotally attached to the brake shoe with a finger and its upper part rests against the groove of the spacer bar 10. The rib of the brake shoe is installed in the opposite groove of the bar. |
REAR CABLES
Replace the rear cable if it is excessively stretched (impossibility of adjusting the parking brake), mechanical damage and loss of mobility in the sheath. |
You will need: keys “8”, “13” (two), cobra pliers, pliers. |
1.Remove the brake drum (see here). |
3.While holding the tip from turning with pliers, unscrew the lock nut and the adjusting nut to the end of the tip.

8....from the hole in the body bracket.
|
11.Pull the cable out of the hole in the brake shield.
10.Disconnect the parking brake cable end from the drive lever.
|
12.Similarly, remove the right branch of the cable and remove the rear cable from the car. |
13.Install the new cable on the vehicle in the reverse order of removal. |
14.Adjust the parking brake system (see “Checking and adjusting the parking brake”). |
REPLACING THE FRONT CABLE AND PARKING BRAKE LEVER
Replace the lever assembly if the gear sector or pawl is worn or damaged. |
Replace the front cable if it is excessively stretched (impossibility of adjusting the parking brake) or has mechanical damage. |
You will need: a 13mm wrench, pliers, a screwdriver. |
1.Disconnect the rear cable guide from the front cable end (see above). |
2.Remove the floor tunnel lining (see here). |
4.Remove the lever axle retaining ring.

Other types of parking brake
There are several other types of hand brakes.
- The first, the so-called central one, is used on cars equipped with automatic transmissions. The principle of operation of such a brake is that when the gearbox selector is moved to the “Parking” position, the drive shafts of the wheels are blocked. But it is worth noting that the central brake is only auxiliary; the mechanism that ensures wheel locking has not been abandoned and is present in the design of the braking system.
- The second type of machine brake is electromechanical. Unlike a cable type, this type does not have a drive as such for the wheel locking mechanism, but it does have electric motors that act on the levers in the brake mechanisms. That is, the driver simply presses a button and the electric motors block the wheels. It's simple, but not as reliable as a cable.
Since the mechanical handbrake is the most common, we will consider it further. And let's start directly with the drive itself. And we will look at it using the example of the VAZ-2109.

2. If there is no such ramp, for a simplified check of the parking brake, place the car on a level surface. Place the gear shift lever in the neutral position and fully raise the parking brake lever in the passenger compartment. Get out of the car and try to move it. If you succeed, you need to urgently adjust the parking brake drive. |
NOTEAdjust the parking brake drive from below the vehicle mounted on a lift or inspection ditch. |
You will need: two 12mm wrenches, cobra pliers or pliers. |
1. While holding the adjusting nut with wrench 1, use wrench 2 to loosen the lock nut. |
2. Hold the cable with pliers and tighten or unscrew the adjusting nut until the lever moves 7–9 clicks.
4. Perform several full strokes of the lever, then lower the lever until it stops. |
5. Turn the rear wheels by hand. They should rotate evenly, without jerking. Otherwise, repair the parking brake actuator or rear brake mechanism. |

Chevrolet Niva RAMMSTEIN › Logbook › Replacing the front parking brake cable
The year before last, before a trip to Crimea, I changed the rear handbrake cable on the shnivy, I installed it from an AT company (Czech Republic). After installation, a week later, the handbrake stopped holding, and I drove without a parking brake for almost 2 years. And here we recently cleared the snow in front of the house so that the car is parked on a slope and constantly rolls towards the gate. And so that it wouldn’t roll, I decided to fix the handbrake after all.
