Chevrolet Aveo hatchback review: model history, technical specifications, reviews

Chevrolet Aveo is a subcompact passenger car that is officially a representative of the “B” class. Since today its technical characteristics meet quite stringent requirements, the model could be classified in the highest category - “C”.

These cars are available in three body styles: five and three-door hatchback, five-door sedan. Chevrolet Aveo is equipped with engines with a volume of 1.2-1.6 liters. As the story goes, this budget, reliable, comfortable car, with a wide range of options, appeared on the Russian market in the fall of 2004. It is designed to transport 4-5 people and is most in demand in this category of passenger cars.

The main criteria for Aveo's popularity are its technical characteristics and low cost. For more detailed information about the design, repair, and maintenance of the car, watch the video.

History of the model

The history of the appearance of Chevrolet cars begins in 2002. The Aveo model's pedigree was the Daewoo Kalos, produced by Chevrolet (USA). The development of this car brand belongs to Giorgetto Giugiaro, and the design was done by the Italians (IlatDesign company). The Aveo presentation took place in the spring of 2003 in Chicago. The presented car differs from others in its interior, enlarged trunk compartment, modified grille located at the front (a horizontal strip covered with chrome was added in the center). In the same 2003, serial production of the Chevrolet Aveo began.

Three generations of Aveo

To date, three generations of this wonderful car have already been produced. Read about their differences and characteristics below in the article.

First

Production of the first release of the Chevrolet Aveo with the factory designation T-200 began with three modifications. It was a four-door sedan, five and three-door hatchback. Photos of the Aveo model range, released in 2003, are given in the article. The Chevrolet of this model is equipped with a 1.2-1.6 liter engine with a power of 72-106 hp. With, as well as a manual transmission.

The domestic market presented its customers with cars with engines of two models:

  • 1.2 (4 cylinders, 8 valves, 72 hp);
  • 1.4 (4 cylinders, 16 valves, 94 hp).

For possible causes of engine malfunctions, as well as ways to eliminate them, look at the photos and videos.

In 2004, an updated 5-door Aveo was released. It has a changed appearance: a device in the front headlight for turn signals, the design of the front bumper. The engine and gearbox models remain the same. Watch the video for installation, repair, and technical inspection of various parts of modified cars. The photo shows the T-200 hatchback.

Second

In 2005, in Shanghai, the company introduced the Chevrolet Aveo sedan T-250. Serial production of this modification began in 2006. Aveo has acquired a new appearance, design, and interior.

The car's security system has been redesigned and a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic gearbox is installed. The body dimensions have increased: 4310x1710x1495 mm, wheelbase - 2480 mm. Engine capacity is 1.4-1.6 l, power 94-103 l. With. The machine of this modification has improved technical characteristics. The photo shows a Chevrolet Aveo T-250 sedan.

In 2008, the updated Chevrolet Aveo hatchback T-255 appeared. It is available in five- and three-door models. The company badge in this model is not located on the grille, which has acquired the color of the car, but in the middle, which can be seen in the photo of the five-door Aveo T-255 hatchback. The headlights are arranged to extend onto the wings. A massive rear bumper has been installed. The technical characteristics of engines and gearboxes have not changed. For the installation and repair of the main components of the T-255 hatchback, see the video and photos in the article.

Third

In 2012, the third generation Chevrolet Aveo was released with the index T-300. The five-door car of this brand is presented in two modifications - hatchback and sedan. Their production is based on a new platform called Gamma II. Thanks to the use of high-strength steels, the rigidity of the body has increased, which has improved the safety and handling of the car. The equipment of the instrument panel is pleasing to the eye, on which there is one round tachometer, an information screen, and a digital speedometer.

The car is equipped with security systems, electronic stabilization, and power steering. The trunk compartment has been increased: for the T-300 hatchback its volume is 290 liters, and for the sedan it is 502 liters. Standard equipment for consumers on the Russian market includes a chrome radiator grille, a CD/MP3 audio system with USB and AUX connectors, air conditioning, and electric windows.

You can find out where the various systems are located in third-generation models and how to repair or replace them by watching videos and photos.

Chevrolet Aveo T-300 is equipped with modern gasoline engines. Their power is 115 and 110 hp. s., volume 1.6 l and 1.4 l. These engines have improved lubricant circulation and adjustable valve timing. An installed 1.3 turbodiesel can have 75-95 liters. With. Chevrolet Aveo T-300 is available with a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission. The gearbox device is presented in the video.

History of the Chevrolet Aveo model

First generation T200

The first generation Chevrolet Aveo with the T200 index was released onto the market in 2003. The car was produced until 2008 after a restyled version with the index T250 was released in 2006. The model was offered as a sedan, as well as a 3- and 5-door hatchback. The number of copies sold was not a record, but sales were good.

The Chevrolet Aveo was present on the market in 11 countries under various names. For example, in the American market it was called Sonic. Sales were also conducted in the markets of Australia and New Zealand, the Middle East, South Africa and Eastern Europe.

At the time of writing this review (April 2022), the cost of used first-generation Chevrolet Aveos is:

  • 5-door hatchback – from 110 to 315 t.r.;
  • Sedan - from 125 to 260 rubles;
  • 3-door hatchback, restyling - from 165 to 360 rubles;
  • 5-door hatchback, restyling - from 165 to 450 rubles;
  • Sedan, restyling – from 99 to 480 tr.

Appearance

It’s worth saying right away that the appearance of the Chevrolet Aveo is not one of the car’s strengths. In the front part we see a short hood, the stamping lines of which converge towards the false radiator grille. The grille is made in the form of a truncated ellipse, and on top there is a chrome strip with the company logo.

On both sides of the Chevrolet Aveo radiator grille there are rectangular headlights. Below is a large bumper with a rectangular air intake and fog lights. There is nothing that immediately attracts attention and is remembered for a long time.

In the profile of the Chevrolet Aveo hatchback, you can see a narrow front part, smoothly turning into the A-pillar, which is strongly tilted back. Then the roof line, practically without decreasing, reaches the fifth door and sharply goes down. The rear of the Chevrolet Aveo is severely chopped off. Perhaps the appearance suffers from this, but there will be plenty of headroom for rear passengers.

On the front fender of the Chevrolet Aveo you can see a small turn signal, and on the doors there are stamping lines. Interestingly, the designers decided to increase the glass area due to a small window in the rear pillar. The 13-inch wheels that are installed in the basic version of the Chevrolet Aveo do not add dynamics to the appearance.

A significant part of the rear of the Chevrolet Aveo is occupied by a hefty bumper, on which there are no elements. It extends to the trapezoidal rear lights, as well as the fifth door, which looks small and neat against its background. The advantages of the tailgate include a large glass area. This means that the driver will have a good view in the panoramic mirror.

On the fifth door of the Chevrolet Aveo there is a spoiler, under which an additional brake light is hidden. A wiper is provided to clean the tailgate glass. On the door itself, in the center, there is a recess for the license plate, logo and company name.

The dimensions of the Chevrolet Aveo hatchback are 3880 x 1670 x 1495 mm (length x width x height) with a wheelbase of 2480 mm. The car's ground clearance is 160 mm, and its curb weight is 960 kg.

Salon

The interior of the Chevrolet Aveo T200 is simple and made using inexpensive materials, which is not surprising for a budget car. The front row seats are quite hard and have little lateral support. The rear row can accommodate three adult passengers. This is not to say that they will be comfortable there, but it is quite possible to travel a short distance.

The driver's seat of the Chevrolet Aveo has a 4-spoke steering wheel with two horn buttons. The instrument panel is also kept as simple as possible with two separate wells. One of them contains the tachometer, and the other the speedometer. In the compartment where the speedometer is located, there is also a small and uninformative display of the Chevrolet Aveo T200 on-board computer.

The central console of the Chevrolet Aveo is made of plastic with an approach to the front panel. There, under the visor, there is a clock display. At the top of the console there are round ventilation deflectors, and then there is a round alarm button.

Even lower are the control units for the standard Chevrolet Aveo T200 radio and climate control. In addition, the driver and front passenger are offered cup holders, an ashtray and a cigarette lighter.

The central tunnel of the Chevrolet Aveo is as simple as possible and does not even have an armrest between the front seats. In the center there is a gear shift knob, a parking brake lever, as well as a recess for every little thing. The luggage compartment of the Chevrolet Aveo T200 hatchback has a volume of 220 liters, which can be increased to 980 liters if you fold the back of the rear sofa.

Technical part

The following gasoline engines were installed under the hood of the Chevrolet Aveo T200 hatchback:

  • 1.2 liters. Power 72 l. s., peak torque 104 Nm;
  • 1.4 l. 82 and 94 l. s., 123 and 130 nm;
  • 1.5 liters. 86 l. With.;
  • 1.6 liters. 105 l. s., 145 nm.

In combination with the 1.4 liter engine, a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission was offered. With all other engines, a “mechanics” was installed. All modifications of the Chevrolet Aveo were produced in front-wheel drive.

The car was based on a front-wheel drive platform with a transverse engine. A McPherson suspension was installed at the front, and semi-independent with a torsion beam at the rear.

The Chevrolet Aveo rack and pinion steering mechanism has a hydraulic booster. Disc brakes operate on the front wheels, and drum brakes on the rear wheels. The ABS system is installed as standard.

Restyling Chevrolet Aveo T250

The exterior of the Chevrolet Aveo hatchback has changed for the better after restyling. A more prominent hood cover was installed, as well as front optics of a different design. The filling was still left halogen. The false radiator grille with chrome edging has increased significantly in size and now consists of two parts.

The upper part starts directly from the line of the Chevrolet Aveo T250 hood lid, and the lower part is separated by a wide strip with the company logo, and is located in the center of the bumper. At the edges of the lower part of the bumper there are large air intakes, in which there is room for round fog lights.

As for the profile view, the Chevrolet Aveo T250 is practically no different from the pre-restyling version. Is that the rear bumper began to protrude more beyond the dimensions of the fifth door. The stampings on the doors, as well as the turn signal on the front fenders, remained the same. A small “window” in the rear roof pillar has also been preserved.

At the rear of the Chevrolet Aveo hatchback, the rear lights have changed and have become much prettier. There is a spoiler on the trunk lid, and under it there is an additional brake light. The massive rear bumper now has a diffuser, which is covered with a mesh. The Chevrolet Aveo bumper still looks bulky and redundant. True, the designers added a little relief to it at the bottom.

The dimensions of the Chevrolet Aveo T250 hatchback are 3920 x 1680 x 1505 mm (length x width x height) with a wheelbase of 2480 mm. The ground clearance of the hatchback is 155 mm, and the curb weight is 990 kg.

The interior of the Chevrolet Aveo has been slightly redesigned, but there have been no major changes. The same inexpensive materials are used, which is not surprising for a budget car. The trunk volume remained the same as that of the pre-restyling hatchback (220/980 l).

Significant changes have occurred in the line of Chevrolet Aveo power units after restyling. The power of the 1.2-liter gasoline engine was increased to 84 hp. With. The designers managed to increase output by installing 4 valves per cylinder and two overhead camshafts. Thanks to the valve deactivation system (PDA), fuel intake and combustion have been improved. This engine was offered in conjunction with a manual transmission.

Under the hood of the Chevrolet Aveo there is a new 1.4 liter engine with an output of 101 hp. With. and torque 131 N. m. (4200 rpm). 1.5 liter engine with 86 hp output. With. switched to the restyled model without changes. Only now, in addition to the manual, it also offered an automatic transmission.

Weak spots

In general, we can say that the first-generation used Chevrolet Aveos did not have any catastrophic problems, but various minor breakdowns irritated the owners of these cars.

Motors

Before restyling, the Chevrolet Aveo T200 was equipped with engines of the B12S1 and F14D3 models, which had a belt-type camshaft drive. The 1.2 liter model had 2 valves per cylinder, and the 1.4 liter model had 4 valves. The engines had a decent service life, reaching at least 250 thousand km. After that, they needed a major overhaul of the piston group. Before major repairs, 1.4 liter engines could easily run 350 thousand km with timely oil changes.

Owners of Chevrolet Aveo with pre-restyling engines reported in their reviews about leaking gaskets and seals, as well as clogging of the hole in the throttle body. The crankcase ventilation system on these engines requires periodic cleaning. It is recommended to change oil seals and gaskets as soon as possible.

These Chevrolet Aveo engines also had problems with the cooling system elements. Since it is made of inexpensive materials, cracking of the expansion tank, increased wear of pipes, and failure of the thermostat often occur. On forums you can find messages about warping of plastic cylinder head covers on 1.4-liter engines. Oil leaks into spark plug wells occur. The EGR valve on these engines contaminates the intake manifold, and there have also been cases of it sticking. The remaining problems with the Chevrolet Aveo T200 engines can be called specific, since they were observed only on individual copies.

After restyling, gasoline engines B12D1 and F14D4 appeared under the hood of the updated Chevrolet Aveo T250. The first has a timing chain drive, and the second has a belt drive. The service life of the timing chain on the B12D1 engine is about 150 thousand km. Periodically you need to listen to the sound of the chain during a cold start. Sometimes there are cases of a chain break or jumping, which leads to bending of the valves.

What is known about F14D3 engines is that they had an incorrectly set valve-bushing gap, which led to burnouts, as well as other serious consequences. At one time, Chevrolet carried out a recall campaign on the Aveo about this, but there are still copies on the secondary market with this problem.

If poor starting and decreased compression are observed on F14D3 engine models, then most likely you will soon have to repair the cylinder head. Experts recommend periodically changing high-voltage wires, due to which the power unit may lose traction. Chronic diseases of this engine in a Chevrolet Aveo include contamination of the intake manifold, idle valve, and throttle. As a result, the operation of vacuum drives is disrupted.

On F14D4 power plants, problems can be noted with the intake manifold flaps, which lead to a decrease in power. The reasons here are weak plastic dampers, EGR, as well as oil from the cardboard ventilation system. On this Chevrolet Aveo T250 engine, experts recommend changing the cylinder head cover gaskets as often as possible. Otherwise, oil leakage may damage the ignition coils. Replacing them will cost significantly more than gaskets.

Some owners of Chevrolet Aveo modifications with F14D4 report a knocking sound from the phase regulators when starting a cold engine. Usually the problem was clogged valve screens and wear on the valves themselves. The malfunction must be eliminated, otherwise you will soon have to change the couplings with a phase regulator.

In the case of modification of the Chevrolet Aveo with the F14D4 power unit, experts recommend periodically adjusting the valve clearances, since the engine does not have hydraulic compensators. When the speed fluctuates at idle, the electronic throttle should be cleaned. It is also necessary to promptly eliminate oil leakage from the couplings. Otherwise, the service life of the timing belt will be significantly reduced.

The 1.6 liter engine is the F16D4 model. Chevrolet Aveos with this engine were not supplied to the Russian market, but in terms of their chronic diseases they are similar to the F14D4 engines.

Transmissions

Most first-generation Chevrolet Aveo engines have a power of about 100 horsepower. Therefore, gearboxes do not experience serious loads. But still, a number of problems arise with the transmissions of car owners, which are described below.

The D13 manual gearbox used with the 1.2 liter engines was unsuccessful. It turned out to have many unsuccessful design decisions. For example, at the turn of 70-90 thousand km the bearings were already humming due to their weak design. Transmission shafts rarely failed and were inexpensive to repair. Another problem with this gearbox on a Chevrolet Aveo was the synchronizers.

In addition, owners of Chevrolet Aveo with this “box” note welding of the differential to the satellite axis, as well as jamming of the fifth gear. A serious problem with D13 on the Chevrolet Aveo is the frequent leakage of oil seals. As a result, the oil level in the box drops, which seriously reduces its service life. In order to extend the life of these manual transmissions, experts recommend changing the oil at least every 30 thousand km. This is more often than the manufacturer's official recommendations, but it will be better.

The D16 manual gearbox was installed with the 1.4 and 1.6 liter engines. Like the D13, this model has much in common with its sister gearbox in Opel cars. In general, the device turned out to be reliable, but oil seal leaks remain a headache for the owners of these modifications of the Chevrolet Aveo.

The Aisin 60-41SN/60-40LE automatic transmission worked with 1.4 and 1.6 engines on first-generation Chevrolet Aveo cars almost without problems. If you change the oil in a timely manner, the box will last up to 250 thousand km without problems. Then the owners write about the need to replace the solenoids, clean the valve body and replace the gas turbine linings.

Some modifications of the Chevrolet Aveo with 1.4 liter engines were equipped with an Aisin 81-40LE automatic transmission. It is similar in design to the previous one, but can operate with significantly less engine torque. The service life here is also 250 thousand km before major repairs. Among the common problems with Aisin 81-40LE, owners note problems with the planetary gear.

Second generation T300

The premiere of the new Chevrolet Aveo hatchback took place in 2010 at the Paris Motor Show, and the sedan was shown in Detroit at the beginning of 2011. Soon after this, production of the second generation Chevrolet Aveo T300 began. At the same time, assembly and sales of the first generation continued until 2012. For the Russian market, Aveo assembly was organized in Kaliningrad. At the beginning of 2013, additional capacity for assembling the Chevrolet Aveo was deployed at the GAZ enterprise. The hatchback received an updated appearance, interior, and technical features. Modification in a 3-door body. The hatchback is not available in the second generation. There are only a sedan and a 5-door left. hatchback. This model has not yet been restyled and since 2011 the car has been produced unchanged. The cost of used second-generation Chevrolet Aveos on the Russian automobile market (as of April 2018) is:

  • Sedan ─ from 210 to 655 t.r.;
  • 5-door hatchback ─ from 280 to 500 tr.

Appearance

The front design of the Chevrolet Aveo T300 has become much more aggressive and original compared to the previous generation. The center of attention is the false radiator grille, consisting of two levels. They are separated by a stripe, in the center of which is the company logo. The bumper began to look more streamlined and directed forward. The side parts of the bumper extend far back, making the front of the car look fast. The rectangular front optics are now made in the form of separate wells, similar to motorcycle headlights. Additionally, fog lights are built into the front bumper.

When looking at the Chevrolet Aveo in profile, you can see the already familiar stampings on the surface of the doors. The swollen wheel arches also attract attention, which adds originality and dynamism to the appearance. The rear door handles built into their frames look unusual. From a distance, you might think that the Chevrolet Aveo hatchback has three, not five doors.

The rear of the Chevrolet Aveo T300 looks pretty neat. The rear bumper has been reduced in size compared to its predecessor and has a more interesting shape. The trunk door has small dimensions and is decorated with a spoiler. The glass area is small, which can create visibility problems for the driver. The rear lights are made in the form of separate wells and repeat the style of the front optics.

The dimensions of the Chevrolet Aveo T300 hatchback are 4039 x 1735 x 1517 mm (length x width x height) with a wheelbase of 2525 mm. The ground clearance of the car is 155 mm, and the curb weight is 1168 kg. Depending on the configuration, the Chevrolet Aveo can be equipped with 15 and 16-inch wheels.

Salon

Inexpensive materials were used to decorate the interior of the second generation Chevrolet Aveo. But they are of decent quality for this class of car. In addition, the ergonomics of the cabin are at a high level and there are many different compartments for storing small items.

The top trim levels of the Chevrolet Aveo offer two-tone trim on the dashboard and doors. At the driver's seat there is a three-spoke steering wheel with buttons for controlling some functions of the Chevrolet Aveo. The steering column is adjustable for reach and height. The rim has convenient grooves for fingers. Behind the steering wheel opens the dashboard, which is made in the likeness of the Chevrolet Spark, and the center console is reminiscent of that of the Chevrolet Cruze.

On the center console, under the ventilation deflectors, there is a sound system control unit, as well as a climate settings panel. On the central tunnel there is a gear shift knob and a parking brake lever. Climate control installation is offered as an option for a fee. Heated seats and cruise control are also paid separately.

The front seats of the Chevrolet Aveo have a comfortable profile and lateral support. In addition, they offer many adjustments to customize the seat to suit you. However, for people with large builds, these seats will still be a bit cramped. If you believe the reviews of Chevrolet Aveo owners, the rear sofa can accommodate three adult passengers of average build. Among the interior bonuses are two glove boxes, as well as USB and AUX interfaces.

The luggage compartment of the Chevrolet Aveo T300 hatchback has a volume of 290 liters. If you fold the back row, you can increase the trunk volume to 653 liters. When compared with the previous generation of the five-door Chevrolet Aveo hatchback, the interior space of the new model has increased quite a bit.

Technical part

When creating the Chevrolet Aveo T300, the Gamma2 platform was used, on the basis of which the Chevrolet Spark and some other budget models from General Motors were also developed. McPherson struts are used as the front suspension, and a semi-independent torsion beam acts as the rear suspension. The car has good handling and behaves adequately both in the city and on the highway. There is some roll when cornering, but it is not critical.

Compared to the first generation Chevrolet Aveo, noise insulation was improved, the hydraulic power steering was replaced with an electric one, and some useful systems appeared. These are ABS, EBD, ASR (anti-slip), ESP (dynamic stabilization system).

The following gasoline engines were installed under the hood of the Chevrolet Aveo T300:

  • 1.2 l. Recoil 86 l. With. Acceleration up to 100 km/h from 5 speed. The manual transmission takes 13.4 seconds. Maximum speed 171 km/h, fuel consumption 5.5 liters per 100 km;
  • 1.4 l. 100 l. With. Acceleration to “hundreds” with “mechanics” ─ 12.2 seconds, and with “automatic” ─ 13.1 seconds. Maximum speed is 177 and 175 km/h, and gasoline consumption is 5.9 and 6.8 liters per 100 km, respectively;
  • 1.6 l. 115 hp Acceleration to 100 km/h with manual transmission is 11.3 seconds, and with automatic transmission 11.7 seconds. Top speed is limited to 189 and 186 km/h, and average consumption is 6.6 and 7.2 liters per 100 km, respectively;
  • Turbocharged 1.4 l. Acceleration to hundreds with a manual transmission takes 8 seconds. The maximum speed is set at 200 km/h, gasoline consumption is 7.3 liters per 100 km. This engine was offered in the Chevrolet Aveo T300 sold on the North American market.

With the listed engines, a 5-speed manual transmission was offered, as well as a 6-speed automatic transmission. Only the 1.6-liter F16D4 gasoline engine was offered on the Russian market. In Russian car dealerships, the Chevrolet Aveo T300 sedan and hatchback were offered in LT and LTZ trim levels.

Weak spots

All second-generation Chevrolet Aveo engines are reliable and do not cause serious problems for owners. The manual transmission caused trouble. Moreover, problems with it began already with a short mileage, and by 100 thousand km, many copies already required replacement of synchronizers. Experts recommend changing the gearbox oil at least every 50 thousand km.

The design of the Chevrolet Aveo is quite simple. It uses components and spare parts typical for all class B cars. Almost nothing breaks in the rear suspension, but the front suspension often requires replacement of the ball joints of the arms. The design allows them to be changed quickly, and they are inexpensive. In addition, silent blocks quite often require replacement. In principle, the cost of a new lever and the work to replace it is also inexpensive.

On high-mileage Chevrolet Aveo T300s, there are breakdowns of the starter, failure of the air conditioning compressor, and also the water pump. Some owners write in their reviews about the poor quality of the body paint. Chrome surfaces quickly become dull. And the varnish on the body is easily scratched.

There are no problems with the brake mechanisms on the Chevrolet Aveo, but the front and rear bearings require periodic monitoring. The cost of components and work to replace bearings is within several thousand rubles. During the presence of the second generation Chevrolet Aveo on the market, the manufacturer managed to carry out a major service campaign to replace the ignition switches. The problem was that there was a risk of the engine stopping or starting spontaneously. There have even been several fatalities due to this in North America. There were no such incidents in Russia.

Performance characteristics

Chevrolet Aveo has high characteristics that were developed taking into account all vehicle safety requirements. This makes it possible to consider it the most reliable in this class. The performance characteristics are described in the table below.

1.2 liters (84 hp) with a 5-speed manual transmission, acceleration to “hundreds” in 12.8 seconds, top speed 170 km/h, combined fuel consumption 6-7 liters. 1.4 liter engine (94 hp) with 5 manual gearbox (4 automatic gearbox), acceleration dynamics to 100 km/h - 11.9 seconds (12.3 sec), maximum speed 175 km/h (170 km/h). The average fuel consumption of a Chevrolet Aveo 2 with this engine is 6.5 liters (7 liters). Aveo 2006 1.5 develops 86 hp, the engine is coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission (4 automatic transmission), acceleration to 100 km/h in 11.1 seconds (11.9 seconds), with a maximum possible speed of 176 km/h (170 km/h) . The average fuel consumption of the Chevrolet Aveo 2 is 7.5 liters (8 liters). Aveo engine 1.6 liters (106 hp) 5 manual gearbox (4 automatic transmission), acceleration to the first “hundred” in 10.5 seconds (11.1 seconds). The maximum speed is 185 km/h (175 km/h) with an average fuel consumption of 8 liters (8.5 liters). Technical characteristics of Aveo 2: independent front suspension with MacPherson struts, semi-independent rear suspension. Disc brakes at the front, drum brakes at the rear, power steering.

Real fuel consumption

The average fuel consumption of a Chevrolet Aveo in an old body under real operating conditions, according to owner reviews, is higher. Thus, the 1.5 liter engine (86 hp) is distinguished by enviable gluttony, fuel consumption in the city does not fall below 10-11 liters. Operation of a Chevrolet Aveo 2 sedan with a 1.6 liter engine (106 hp) and an automatic transmission (4 automatic transmissions) shows a consumption of at least 11 liters in urban conditions. All engines of the old Aveo readily digest 92 gasoline, but fuel of questionable quality leads to contamination of the throttle valve and injector nozzles.

Road test

The suspension of the old version of the Aveo in the sedan body is well balanced and allows you to move confidently both on smooth and even asphalt (holds a straight line well) and on rough roads with holes and potholes thanks to 185/55 R 15 tires. A characteristic feature of the Aveo 2006 suspension is the ability to move on broken roads at a higher speed than its classmates. The slower the car passes the disgusting section of the road, the more the passengers shake. A test of an Aveo in an old body on extreme sections shows that when the speed increases, only rubber slaps on the road surface are heard from under the wheels. The sharp steering wheel allows you to quickly change the trajectory of movement (it has proven itself well on winding roads), but it gets annoying during long trips on straight roads (nervous, the slightest touch knocks the car off the trajectory). The high body of the old version of the Aveo sedan with a large windage makes it difficult to control in crosswinds.

Operating problems, pros and cons of the Chevrolet Aveo 2006

In general, the previous Chevrolet Aveo sedan body has its unconditional advantages - it is a comfortable car with a comfortable large interior designed for four, an energy-intensive suspension, and a sharp steering wheel. The disadvantages include disgusting sound insulation of the bottom and wheel arches, low-power and power-hungry engines, unclear gear shifting of a manual transmission, thoughtfulness of the automatic transmission, and drift of the rear axle during sharp maneuvering. With proper and timely maintenance, the Aveo T250 chassis is durable and survivable. Spare parts for the old Chevrolet Aveo are available, prices cannot be beat, any part or assembly is easy to find in auto stores.

Dimensions

It is impossible not to note the compactness of the Aveo. Its overall dimensions are as follows:

  • the length of the car is: sedan 4399 mm, hatchback 4039 mm;
  • width and height for these models – 1735x1517 mm;
  • the wheelbase also has the same indicators - 2525 mm;
  • the wheel track is equal - for the front 1497 mm, for the rear 1495 mm;
  • fuel tank volume – 46 l;
  • ground clearance is 155 mm;
  • for the sedan, the curb weight is from 1147 kg, the total weight is 1598 kg, for the hatchback it is from 1168 kg and 1613 kg, respectively.

The Engine magazine continues to study the Russian secondary market, selecting inexpensive and interesting options. Having scoured ad sites with the search criterion for the most recent options up to half a million rubles, we came across tempting offers for the Chevrolet Aveo (T300). The stylish “Korean” pleases with its attractive appearance, original and relatively spacious interior, German engine and good reputation among servicemen. It remains only to understand how often you will have to visit them.

The first Chevrolet Aveo proved to be a simple car, with a not very comfortable interior and mediocre driving characteristics, but at the same time a relatively modern, well-equipped and, most importantly, quite reliable car. All this made the car very popular.

Let us recall that the first generation Aveo competed with the Renault Logan in the mid-2000s, and in many respects it looked noticeably more attractive than the “French”, although it was a little more expensive. For a new sedan with a 1.4 engine in a good configuration with air conditioning, they then asked for 360,000 rubles.

The second generation appeared in 2011, and reached Russia in large numbers already in 2012, with the Kaliningrad assembly, which a year later moved to the capacity of the GAZ plant.

The car turned out to be incredibly bold in terms of design: aggressive style, open dual head optics and motorcycle features in the interior decoration immediately attracted a new, younger audience to it. Moreover, the model appeared in the next part of the blockbuster “Transformers”, which further fueled interest in it. True, the money invested in such a noticeable transformation was compensated by a greatly increased price. The price for top-end configurations went well beyond 700,000 rubles, which significantly reduced sales.

One way or another, the model has gathered her audience, and today she has reached the age when it is customary to switch to something more serious. The first samples of Aveo II are already in their seventh year with a mileage of 150 thousand km, and the most recent copies of 2015, sold before GM left Russia, were just reaching their last kilometers and months of warranty.

What about the engine and gearbox?

The car was supplied to the domestic market with two engines of the Ecotec family, which it received from the union concern Opel - 1.4 (101 hp) and 1.6 (115 hp). The first was equipped exclusively with a manual transmission, the second was also available with a 6-speed automatic. As sales have shown, the increased weight and price, as well as the desire of customers to get a larger number of options, have brought the modification with the 1.6 engine to the forefront. Actually, technically, both engines differ mostly only in volume: the 101-horsepower one is labeled F14D4, the 115-horsepower one is labeled F16D4.

Both engines are upgraded generation D3 (or ETEC II) engines. Moreover, the transformations affected to a greater extent the enhancement of reliability. Thus, the engines lost hydraulic compensators and the EGR ecosystem, which was responsible for the redistribution of exhaust gases. A reinforced timing system has appeared with more durable rollers and a belt with a replacement interval of 150 thousand km. A variable valve timing system and an electronic throttle valve have been added.

In this regard, oddly enough, Aveo II is more interesting than its “big brother” Cruze, which was still using the old F16D3 engine that it inherited from Lacetti.

Alas, the modernization did not solve the main problem of these engines, namely, oil leakage associated with the design features of the unit and specifically the valve cover. Very often, smudges are defined as a crankshaft oil seal leak, but most often this is not the case. The problem is solved by replacing the gasket, and sometimes by simply tightening the bolts.

The remaining “sores” cannot be called regular, since they occur every once in a while. It was possible to solve the problems associated with the heat exchanger, but the updated engine continues to encounter problems with the thermostat and the sensor built into it, with a pressure sensor or lambda probe. Symptoms of a malfunction of the latter are adjustment at idle speed. Otherwise, both engines can be called quite reliable, capable of withstanding 200–250 thousand kilometers, however, owners regularly complain about increased fuel consumption.

Chronic “diseases” of Chevrolet did not leave the Aveo II manual transmission, which even in its new state did not indulge in selectivity. Some of the problems are related to the rapid wear of synchronizers in first and second gears, and some are due to the updated clutch mechanism. The new model was equipped with a heavier flywheel, as well as a clutch basket and disc with a larger working surface, which significantly reduced vibrations at idle. However, due to environmental regulations, the engine lost its reserve of traction at low speeds, as a result of which domestic drivers, accelerating at the start, burned out the clutch.

Against this background, the 6T30E “automatic” turns out to be more reliable, but mainly in terms of hardware. Its main drawback is software. On the first copies of the Aveo II, just like on the Cruze model, by the way, there was a clear inconsistency between the engine and gearbox, as a result of which the car was frankly “stupid” and confused in switching. This could be partially cured by re-flashing the “brains”, but the symptoms did not completely disappear. In addition, despite the manufacturer’s statement about changing the oil in the gearbox every 150 thousand km, it is recommended to change it three times more often (!), otherwise kicks and jolts cannot be avoided.

What about the suspension and brakes?

Taking into account the handling shortcomings of its predecessor, the suspension on the T300 generation Chevrolet Aveo was tightened. Stability has improved, but comfort has predictably suffered. Therefore, the endurance of the chassis directly depends on the owner’s driving style and accuracy. Bad roads and reluctance to brake for potholes? Get ready for stabilizer struts, silent blocks, wheel bearings and shock absorbers to immediately become consumables with a replacement interval of 20–30 thousand km. The only good news is that Aveo has quite a lot of inexpensive and relatively high-quality non-original products. In addition, reinforced levers were installed on cars of recent years of production.

The car is sick and the brake calipers are rattling, which is caused by small guides that become loose over time. This does not affect the efficiency of the system, but it is quite annoying. Some dealers fixed the problem under warranty, but this did not always last long, so you can find various modifications on the car in the form of brackets and gaskets.

Chevrolet Aveo transmission

The Chevrolet Aveo is produced with two transmission options. One manual transmission is a five-speed transmission and comes with the basic trim levels of the car. The other is automatic – it is six-speed and this type of gearbox is installed on premium cars.

The front suspension is independent, and the rear suspension is semi-independent. The brake system is represented by ventilated drums.

What about the interior and body?

The impressive external appearance and, in general, the transition to a more expensive positioning of the Chevrolet Aveo II did not save the car from all-round savings. In particular, all the plastic in the cabin, despite the extravagant design, is inexpensive and hard, subject to squeaks and crickets over time. Painted parts of the interior scratch very easily.

Another ailment of the Aveo is poorly closing doors. This is due to the fact that thin doors do not have enough of their own weight, as a result of which, with a sharp bang, an air bubble forms in the cabin, which can push the light door back. Loose fasteners, which need to be tightened regularly, also do not facilitate easy closing. The problem is treated by making the doors heavier by adding sound insulation, which the Aveo is practically devoid of. Some people manage to make air ducts in the rear parcel shelf, as a result of which air goes into the trunk when the doors are closed. Many people immediately make noise on the wheel arches, since the noise from the tires drowns out all other sounds. From time to time there are problems with heated seats.

But the body is quite strong, resisting corrosion noticeably better than its predecessor, but mainly due to high-quality painting. The emerging areas of rust are associated primarily with mechanical damage to the paintwork. Therefore, it is better to treat chips, abrasions, cracks and dents immediately. Massive traces of rust on the body are most likely a consequence of poor-quality body repairs and poor repainting of elements.

Peculiarities

A distinctive feature of this car is its design. All edges of the body are soft, as if flowing. On the road the car looks expensive and stylish. The car really stands out in the traffic. One of the main features of the manufacturer is that this car model is also produced in bright colors. The car dashboard is very practical and beautiful. The instrument needles glow brightly, but do not interfere with driving. The on-board computer built into the panel shows all the information about the car at the right time. The basic configuration of the car includes such accessories as: front windows, central locking, alarm, CD player, power steering.

What's the result?

The price range for the Chevrolet Aveo II in Russia is somewhere from 300,000 rubles for the first copies of 2011–2012 with a manual transmission to 500,000 rubles for the latest models of 2015 with an automatic transmission. For the money indicated, the car can definitely be recommended for consideration. Inexpensive options will most likely require replacing the valve cover gasket, shaking up the suspension and, most likely, replacing the clutch, and on versions with an automatic transmission it is best to immediately add an oil change in the box. Taking into account the mass of options for non-original and inexpensive spare parts, for relatively little money you can get a stylish and fairly reliable, but not too sophisticated car for every day.

One of the brightest representatives of the modern B-class is the Chevrolet Aveo in the T300 body, which debuted on the Russian market in 2012. What makes the appearance of this model memorable? What was fundamentally new about it compared to the previous generation? What strengths and weaknesses have experts identified in this “Korean with American roots” in their numerous reviews? We will tell you about this and much more in this article.

Exterior

In its appearance, the new generation of Chevrolet Aveo was significantly different from the previous series (T-200 and T-250). The exterior of both the sedan and the hatchback (the car was produced in two body styles) became more sporty, stylish and even moderately aggressive. This was largely achieved through the following design solutions:

  1. Unusual head optics . The car received rectangular headlights with two clearly defined, separated “wells” - one for low beam, the other for high beam. It looks impressive, especially against the background of black matte plastic that frames them.
  2. Trapezoidal two-level radiator grille . It is made in the “family” style of more expensive Chevrolet models - with a division in the center and a large cross-shaped nameplate. In addition, in some trim levels it was complemented by chrome edging, giving the exterior greater solidity.
  3. Lots of ribs, stampings and curves on the body . Similar elements (swollen wheel arches, distinct lines on the sides of the hood and at the bottom of the doors) brought dynamism to the car's appearance.
  4. Smooth roof line . Moreover, with a noticeable slope in the rear. This solution is more typical for sports cars from the C and D-class, so seeing it on a budget foreign car is doubly pleasant.
  5. Streamlined and massive bumpers . Say a tribute to fashion? But no. The bumpers are very large. In addition, unlike the body, there are practically no stampings on them.

All the described innovations in appearance were positively assessed by the public. However, many did not like the design of the rear of the Chevrolet Aveo. As experts say, the image of a dynamic and modern car was spoiled by incomprehensible rear lights that did not fit into the overall style. It's hard to disagree with this. Although in general the exterior of both the sedan and the hatchback is a solid “B”.

Innovation and functionality

  • The cabin is equipped with up to 6 airbags. It is no coincidence that sedans and hatchbacks received the highest score in EURO NCAP crash tests.
  • The body of the models has a special design. In the event of an accident, the roof of a car can withstand a weight that is 4 times the weight of the car itself. High-strength steel was used in the development of the body.
  • A reliable assistant on the road will be the Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system, which includes a rear view camera.
  • Headlights with the Follow me home system will be appreciated by car enthusiasts: the optics will not go out for a few more minutes after turning off the engine, and then turn off automatically.

Interior

The interior decoration of the Aveo T300 is no less attractive than its appearance. Even despite the budget materials and hard plastic used in the finishing.

The interior of the foreign car turned out to be modern, presentable and sporty in places. Just look at the extravagant dashboard (reminiscent of a motorcycle) with a large tachometer and a digital speedometer with blue backlight. This cannot be found among competitors. The center console also looks interesting. It combines round and rectangular air ducts, textured and smooth plastic.

The steering wheel with its sporty design also looks organic. It is quite massive, but at the same time absolutely not bulky. In the center there is a standard radio (with radio, CD, AUX and USB), below there are large switches for controlling the heating, air conditioning and heating system.

As for ergonomics, the Chevrolet Aveo's interior is very comfortable - spacious seats, a double and spacious glove compartment, many cup holders, niches and compartments for storing small items. There is also enough space in the cabin. Even tall drivers or passengers can fit comfortably inside this car.

Perhaps, with regards to the interior, the only complaints are about sound insulation. The noise from the street and the engine compartment can be heard quite clearly. But do not forget that this is the norm for the B-segment, where almost all of the Chevrolet Aveo’s “classmates” cannot boast of the best “noise”.

Specifications

The third generation of the Chevrolet Aveo was built on the global GM platform under the symbol Gamma 2. Other popular models of the concern - Opel Corsa and Opel Meriva - have exactly the same basis. This is largely why the dimensions of the “Korean” turned out to be almost identical to the dimensions of the above-mentioned cars. To be more precise:

  • Length – almost 440 cm (hatchback – 404 cm);
  • Width – 173.5 cm (same for both body options)
  • Height is slightly less than 152 cm (the same as the five-door version).
  • Curb weight – about 1150 kg.

The front suspension is standard. Here is the “old” MacPherson, familiar to us all. There are also no surprises at the back - a beam. So there is nothing unusual in the chassis of the Chevrolet Aveo T300. At the same time, the suspension is quite stiff. Due to this, comfort suffers, but handling gains.

Now a few words about the ground clearance of the Chevrolet Aveo T300, which is clearly not the strongest point of this car. The ground clearance of the model is only 15 cm. Although in fact this figure is even lower if we take into account the overhang of the front bumper and the rubber lip on it.

But the luggage compartment of the latest generation Chevrolet Aveo turned out to be roomy. For the sedan it became a record for the budget class at that time. Its volume was 502 liters. However, the trunk of the hatchback offered a modest 290 liters. But with the rear row of seats folded, the usable space more than doubled, allowing for up to 653 liters. cargo

Characteristics

The Chevrolet Aveo is a budget car of class B. It is manufactured in two body styles: hatchback and sedan.

The dimensions of the car are as follows: 4.39 m - the length of the car and 1.5 m - the height of the car. The car's ground clearance is 15.5 cm, for which it has won the love of many of our compatriots. The mass of the car is one thousand ninety-eight kilograms, the maximum load weight of the car is one thousand five hundred ninety-three kilograms.

The Chevrolet Aveo hatchback model has the same characteristics as the sedan, except for the length.

Engine and gearbox

It is worth noting that the 2012 Chevrolet Aveo entered the markets of the USA, Japan and the Middle East under the name Sonic. At the same time, the model was supplied to many countries with 6 power units - five gasoline engines and a turbodiesel. Russian buyers were less fortunate. They only had access to a car with a 1.6-liter engine with a power of 115 horsepower and a torque of 155 Nm.

As for the transmission options for the Chevrolet Aveo, sold in Russia, a 6-speed automatic was an alternative to the 5-speed manual transmission. On a stick, the car could accelerate to hundreds in 11.3 seconds. With automatic transmission, the result is, naturally, a little worse - 11.7 s. At the same time, the maximum speed of the new Aveo was limited by the system at 186 km/h.

Was the new car of 2012 economical? According to the manufacturer’s tests, fuel consumption should not exceed 8.9 liters in “city” mode. But this is for cars with manual transmission. With automatic transmission – 9.9 l. However, are these numbers true? According to many former and current owners, the Chevrolet Aveo T300’s appetite turned out to be a little more than stated. Approximately 1 liter.

New sedan and hatchback Chevrolet Aveo 2nd generation

The 2nd generation Chevrolet Aveo in the T300 body, like its predecessor, is available in two body styles: a five-door hatchback and a sedan. The first debuted at the Paris Motor Show in the fall of 2010, and the sedan was first shown in January 2011 at the Detroit Motor Show.

By the way, for the North American market the new Chevrolet Aveo 2 (T300) was renamed Sonic, but here the car is sold under the same name. It is also worth noting that GM plans to assemble the new product at the facilities of the Gorky Automobile Plant.

Chevrolet has distributed photos of the updated Aveo hatchback and sedan for the 2014 model year for the Chinese market. Sales of these models in the Middle Kingdom started in June.

The cars received new head optics, which lost Aveo's signature feature - separate round blocks, as well as other rear lights, a modified trunk lid and rear bumper, as well as a completely redesigned front bumper, fog lights and radiator grille.

The latter is made in a similar style as on the new Chevrolet Cruze 2 for China, which debuted at the April motor show in Beijing. There is no information about changes in the interior and technical content of the restyled Chevrolet Aveo 2014. It is expected that engines and transmissions for the model will remain the same.

It is likely that the European versions of the 2014 Chevrolet Aveo and the modification for the USA, where this model is sold under the name Sonic, will soon undergo similar transformations. But the dates of their appearance and prices have not yet been announced.
