Chevrolet Aveo is a family of front-wheel drive cars of the subcompact niche (B-class according to European criteria), provided in 2 body styles: a 4-door sedan and a 5-door hatchback. The car has a bright design, moderately productive engines and good driving habits, the main target audience of which is young and energetic people living in the city.

In total, exactly 2 generations were released, no more. Many people simply confuse the restyled Chevrolet Aveo T250 with the new generation, but this is not so. The last time the car was updated was in 2016. The entire Chevrolet lineup.

Car history

This car was developed by GM Daewoo in 2002. It turns out that the model has become a logical continuation of the family of the well-known Lanos car. Car enthusiasts liked the new product almost immediately and is in good demand even today. In America alone, more than 55,000 cars are sold every year.

Not many people know, but the Chevrolet Aveo was developed by Giorgetto Giugiaro based on the Daewoo Lanos, the car was designed by the Italian company ItalDesign.

I generation “T200” (2002-2006)

The first generation of Chevrolet Aveo with the factory index T200 is in reality the 2nd generation of Daewoo Kalos (which we know as Lanos). The car was produced for 5 years in 3 body styles and with 3 gasoline engines to choose from. The new product had a nice design and reliable construction.

The design of the car by today's standards, for obvious reasons, does not look very good, even when compared with current budget models. The front part of the Chevrolet Aveo T200 has a short hood, narrow halogen optics, which have turn signals underneath. You can also notice a small false radiator grille with a chrome line.

The front bumper has a simple appearance but features rectangular fog lamps and a rectangular air intake. On the side, the car has swollen wheel arches containing compact wheels. The side part is also distinguished by a small turn signal repeater. The ride height of the Chevrolet Aveo T200 was a fairly average 160 millimeters.

The front part has fabric seats with little lateral support. They cannot be called comfortable. There is basically enough free space. On the second row there is a sofa designed for 3 adults, but it is important to understand that only 2 people can sit more or less comfortably.

The doors received a slightly unusual design, which gives some zest to the Chevrolet Aveo T200. Among the pleasant features is one cup holder for people sitting in the back. In front of the driver of the 1st generation Chevrolet Aveo there is a 4-spoke steering wheel with 2 horn buttons. The “tidy” turned out to be ordinary, analog sensors are located in wells and are very far from each other. Technical characteristics of Aveo T200

The engine compartment of the first generation Chevrolet Aveo has 4 naturally aspirated petrol 4-cylinder engines with distributed injection. This could be a 1.2-liter 72-horsepower (104 Nm) power plant. A 1.4-liter engine producing 83-94 horsepower is also available to buyers.

The “top” version is a 1.6-liter 106-horsepower power plant (145 Nm). A 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission transmits power to the front axle.

As a basis, the company proposed using a front-wheel drive “trolley” with a transversely based “engine”. The front part is equipped with an independent suspension with McPherson struts, and the rear is equipped with an independent torsion beam design. The machine is controlled using a hydraulic booster. The braking system has disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. There is ABS.

How much can you buy an Aveo T200 today?

Only the secondary market allows you to purchase this model. As of March 2022, you can buy a Chevrolet Aveo T200 for an average of 80,000 rubles (the cost of the pre-restyling model). The price depends on the year of manufacture, equipment and general condition.

Updated Aveo I generation “T250” (2005-2011)

The car, with serial number T250, was available in 3 body styles. The restyled Chevrolet Aveo has a nice design, a laconic interior, decent technology and only naturally aspirated power plants that run on gasoline. A little later, the American company introduced a hatchback and a 3-door model.

Not without new headlights, which have become more massive, and inside there is the already familiar halogen filling. The small radiator grille was highlighted with a huge amount of chrome, which makes the car seem more expensive.

The lower part is given over to a massive and embossed bumper, which is equipped with air intakes at the bottom. There are also round-shaped “foglights” with a chrome trim and a chrome horizontal line connecting to the optics.

Not many people know, but in addition to the popular Chevrolet Aveo T250 sedan, the company released a 5-door 5D model and a 3-door 3D car.

From the side the car also looks more solid. The heavily inflated wheel arches are noticeable, which are very popular with young audiences. There was also a stamping line in the middle part. A similar pattern is observed in the upper part of the body of the Chevrolet Aveo T250. The compact turn signal repeater, which has an oval shape, remains in place. The ground clearance has decreased slightly - 155 millimeters.

The rear of the restyled 1st generation Chevrolet Aveo is distinguished by rather large optics with a good color scheme. The trunk lid has a spoiler and a slightly protruding line, which corresponds to the dimensions of the turn signal on the optics. The massive bumper has only a relief shape at the bottom. Overall, the car began to look more mature, stylish and modern.

The interior of the Restyled Aveo has a nice, uncomplicated and ergonomically thought-out design. In front of the driver there is a 4-spoke “steering wheel” of optimal size, a simple, but clear and informative dashboard. The specialists also installed a laconic central console, which has round deflectors for the ventilation system, a double-din radio and 3 climate controls.

Although in Russia cars come with only 2 engines, there are three in total. The initial “engine” is a 1.2-liter 16-valve naturally aspirated power plant, generating 84 “horses” (114 Nm). This allows the car to accelerate to 100 km/h in just 13 seconds, and the “maximum speed” is 170 kilometers per hour . This Chevrolet Aveo engine consumes about 7 liters in the urban cycle.

Next comes a 1.4-liter 101-horsepower (131 Nm) engine. It takes 1 second less to reach the first hundred, and the maximum speed limit does not exceed 175 km/h. The fuel consumption of the Chevrolet Aveo is already 8 liters in city traffic. The most powerful is the 1.6-liter naturally aspirated power plant, generating 109 horsepower (150 Nm). However, unfortunately, there is no exact data on it.

All engines operate with a 5-speed manual transmission, and more powerful versions with a 4-speed automatic transmission. As the basis for the updated Chevrolet Aveo T250, engineers decided to use a front-wheel drive platform with a steel body and a transversely mounted engine.

The front part has an independent suspension with McPherson struts, and the rear part has hydraulic shock absorbers, coil springs and transverse stabilizers. The budget “American” is equipped with rack and pinion steering with built-in power steering. The braking system is exactly the same as the previous version.

Opinions about this car are the most contradictory - some never tire of praising it, others criticize it just as ardently... What exactly is the Chevrolet Aveo?

There is a lot of interesting information in the model’s biography. It turns out that its design was developed by the famous Italian autocouturier Giorgetto Giugiaro, who heads the ItalDesign body studio, which, by the way, has been cooperating with Daewoo for a long time.

Initially, the model had a different name - Kalos, but after the Korean company became the property of GM, its models began to be sold under the Chevrolet brand, and marketers renamed the car Aveo. The creators decided to emphasize the change of brand and name with a slight retouching of the appearance - it was thanks to this that the cars of the first phase of production (2003–2005) received narrow elongated stripes under the main optics, acting as front “turn signals”.

Chevrolet Aveo (T200) was presented in three modifications: 3- and 5-door hatchbacks and a 4-door sedan. At the same time, “3-doors” were not sold in Ukraine.

Aveo optics are not airtight - experts recalled cases of fogging of the front turn signals (on pre-restyling versions), front lights (versions after modernization) and rear lights on sedans.

When buying a used car, it is important to carefully inspect the body. It is not galvanized and, if the first owner did not take care of additional anti-corrosion protection, it can be quite damaged by rust.

The body is not galvanized. If it is not treated further, it may become very rusty.

Sometimes in sedans the reinforcement shelf splits along the seam between the rear pillars. This manifests itself in an unpleasant crunch when driving, especially over uneven roads. The problem is solved by additional welding of the seam.

The first thing you notice inside the Aveo is the massive dashboard, extending far from the windshield. In general, the interior is decorated well. A cheerful mood is created by the round wells of the instrument panel, in which sensors and indicators are hidden, and the same round air deflectors and control knobs for the heating and ventilation system.

The interior trim plastic is cheap - hard, but not creaky. Visibility is slightly limited by the A-pillars. Interior noise insulation is not good - slightly worse than in Daewoo Lanos. Experts also recalled the failure of the heated rear view mirrors.

The seat position in the Aveo is higher than in the related Lanos, but the interior itself is narrower. Front passengers will feel a “friendly shoulder”, and three in the back seat will feel cramped.

All Aveos are equipped with gasoline engines. The most common versions in our country are those with a 1.5-liter engine, similar to that used on Lanos. But all other units proposed for this model are rare.

The 1.5 liter engine has proven itself to be durable and, with proper operation, can last 400–500 thousand km before overhaul. True, motorists recalled cases of premature repair of these units due to the rocker arms of the gas distribution mechanism leaving the working position. The timing belt must be changed along with the roller every 60 thousand km. However, the “pump” driven by the same belt can last 2-3 times its service life. Over time, the front camshaft oil seal and valve cover gasket may lose their tightness (the latter problem occurs for those who like to drive at high engine speeds). Sometimes the thermostat fails. No other serious problems were noted with this engine.

Experts say that the 1.2 liter unit is rather weak for the Aveo. This is especially noticeable when the air conditioner is turned on while driving. And the service life of the 1.2-liter engine is less than that of all the others.

Many owners install gas equipment on Aveo. Mechanics assure that the engines operate quite normally on gas.

Most Aveos are equipped with a 5-speed manual gearbox. Versions with a 4-speed automatic transmission account for 15–20% of the total number of cars.

In both units, loss of tightness of the axle shaft seals and the appearance of a crunching sound in the outer CV joints of the “grenades” were noted. However, after replacing them, this problem no longer arises). But the most serious problem encountered on the Aveo is that the fastening pin of the gearbox mount burst due to overtightening at the factory. This can lead to serious damage to the gearbox and breakage of the axle shafts.

There are no serious complaints about the “mechanics”, but the “automatic” can add hassle - due to the ingress of moisture and dirt, the contacts of the connectors for connecting the “brain” of the automatic transmission oxidize and then rot. This leads to malfunctions of the unit - gears are switched with noticeable shocks. As a result, the clutches “burn out.” Therefore, at the slightest malfunction of the machine, it is better to immediately go for diagnostics.

The clutch is equipped with a sealed hydraulic drive. The only possible problem is the noise of the release bearing (manufacturer's defect).

Compared to Lanos, the Aveo's suspension is a little stiffer, but its enviable energy intensity cannot be taken away from it - it copes well with all road surface defects without causing discomfort to those sitting inside. The other side of the coin is that due to soft shock absorbers and a higher body, noticeable rolls occur during sharp maneuvering. So this car is not suitable for active driving. The front suspension is independent, McPherson type, the rear is a semi-independent torsion beam.

The Aveo suspension has an enviable energy intensity and copes well with the defects of our roads.

There are no serious complaints about the durability of the chassis - most parts are capable of operating for 80-100 thousand km. This is the service life of ball joints, silent blocks of front arms and stabilizer bushings. But the stabilizer struts “go” less – 40–50 thousand km. The “rubber bands” of the rear beam are generally considered “indestructible”. The Aveo also doesn’t have the “sore” inherent in the Lanos – broken rear springs.

The steering is equipped with a hydraulic booster. Experts recalled cases of leakage of the steering shaft oil seal, as well as failure of steering rods. The last problem is more serious - the fact is that the rods cannot be replaced - they are made together with the rack. Although domestic craftsmen have learned to restore such slats. But the steering tips are removable. On our roads they last up to 80 thousand km.

There are no particular problems with the braking system. The only thing the experts remembered was the failure of the ABS sensors.

Chevrolet Aveo is a good option for a budget car. It will attract buyers with a wide offer on the secondary market, the low cost of the car itself, as well as the affordable price of its repair and maintenance due to its simple design and high maintainability. Although this model is not without flaws. Whether you are ready to put up with them - decide for yourself.

Exterior

The new body turned out to be very colorful. Even from a photo of the second generation Chevrolet Aveo you won’t be able to immediately understand that this is a budget car. The lion's share of changes affected the front area of ​​the car almost beyond recognition. You can notice the presence of a fundamentally new hood, crowned with many protrusions and recesses, which is inclined towards the road surface.

Below it there was a place for a compact air intake strip, where Chevrolet stands in the center. On the sides of the grille there are wide and long stripes of head optics with halogen or xenon filling. All this looks very aggressive.

The body kit of the New Chevrolet Aveo T300 also looks bright. It received a massive air intake cutout in the form of an oval in the center, which provides a solid flow of cold air into the engine compartment. In addition, there are two compact grilles on the sides that supply air to the braking devices. The latter still have “foglights”, but only in a more expensive version.

The appearance of the new Chevrolet Aveo 2022 now looks modern, sporty and stylish. Almost the entire area of ​​the body kit was used for the installation of an air intake and side diffusers. Chrome elements only improve the overall appearance.

Important changes also affected the side part of the Chevrolet Aveo 2019. Here you can notice a wavy relief, side mirrors increased in size and supplemented with turn signals, as well as enlarged windows and extensions on the wheel arches. Thanks to such implementations, the car looks almost perfect, which will obviously appeal to many.

The wheel arches can accommodate 15- or 16-inch rollers. The ground clearance height of the 2nd generation Chevrolet Aveo is a fairly average 155 millimeters. The rear of the car is a little inconsistent with the overall style of the vehicle. It has a short tailgate with a small protrusion at the end, massive taillights that also “flow” onto the side pillars, fog lighting lines and a compact body kit, devoid of almost everything except modest protrusions and reflectors.

Advantages and disadvantages

Aveo is a budget model, so it is characterized by the advantages and disadvantages inherent in the class of inexpensive compact cars itself. Owners of the model note the following advantages of the car.

  1. Low cost. The new Aveo was one of the most inexpensive offers on the market; used cars were also cheaper than their classmates. This is a key point in the positioning of the model - for little money, buyers received a high-quality and fairly spacious car with a worldwide reputation.
  2. Economical. The small volume of Aveo engines allows you to save money even when traveling around the city - gasoline consumption does not exceed 9 liters per 100 km in city mode.
  3. Decent equipment. Despite the cheapness, the model is equipped with a fairly high quality - Aveo boasts electric windows, full power accessories, an ABS system, fog lights, air conditioning, interior heating and much more. Aveo's competitors were either more expensive in similar configurations, or were poorly equipped with similar price tag sizes.
  4. High level of comfort. The latest generation Aveo had an “omnivorous” suspension that efficiently absorbed uneven surfaces even on poor surfaces. The comfort of Chevrolet's compact compares favorably with its classmates, which are designed for a sportier driving style and have stiffer suspensions.
  5. Luggage compartment capacity. The second generation boasts a volume of 500 liters in the sedan body, the hatchback has 300 liters of usable trunk volume, but with the rear seats folded down it increases to 650 liters. Such indicators are comparable to cars of a higher class.
  6. Corrosion resistance. The paintwork is worthy of praise - despite the lack of galvanization, Aveo is not prone to rust.

Aveo also has its drawbacks, primarily due to the budget model. Owners of the model note the following disadvantages.

  1. Low level of sound comfort. The lack of sound insulation of the car leads to the fact that at high speeds or on poor surfaces, driving in the Aveo is uncomfortable due to noise.
  2. Creaky plastic interior. The budget nature of the model is fully manifested in the interior decoration - due to its low quality plastic, the car is characterized by the appearance of “crickets” and creaks.
  3. Poor aerodynamics. One of the reasons for the low level of sound comfort is the poor aerodynamic capabilities of the car. They also affect the dynamic characteristics, as well as the pollution of the car while driving - protruding side mirrors constantly collect dirt. Side windows also tend to get dirty, especially in rainy or snowy weather.
  4. Poor level of security. The base model is equipped with only two airbags, which is not enough for a modern car. Aveo also had low crash test scores.
  5. Blind spot of mirrors. The unique design of the side mirrors allows the formation of blind spots. It is almost impossible to adjust the mirrors so that there are no blind spots.

Interior

The quality of finishing materials in the cabin has increased significantly. She can no longer be called poor here. The new product boasts a finish made of fabric, plastic, metal and artificial leather, but all of this is of good quality. The driver and passengers will clearly appreciate this. You will also be pleased with the modern multimedia system.

The central console of the new Chevrolet Aveo 2022 does not have a huge number of parts, which is only an advantage. Here you can see the compact screen of the entertainment center. It is surrounded on the sides and top by air ducts of the ventilation system. There are also several panels with analog keys responsible for setting options that affect the level of comfort. This includes heated seats, climate control, air conditioning, etc.

As for the tunnel, it turned out to be thin but long. On it you can see a panel with connectors for accessories, a transmission switch, and a handbrake. In addition, it has cup holders, pockets for things and an armrest that hides a fairly deep glove compartment underneath.

The interior of the new Chevrolet Aveo T300 is especially decorated with artificial leather, special fabrics, environmentally friendly plastics and polished metal.

Directly in front of the driver is a completely new steering wheel, which is now equipped with a higher quality and more pleasant steering wheel finish. On the spokes you can see a lot of keys with which you can easily interact with the entertainment center of the Chevrolet Aveo 2022.

The “tidy” has also changed. In the center, the engineers decided to install a massive speedometer, which has a round shape, and on the sides of it they placed a tachometer and a “on-board computer” display. The seats have become softer and are equipped with higher quality fabric. Those sitting in front received heated seats already in the initial version. There were also mechanical seat adjustments. Specialists were able to improve the lateral support.

In the back row, designed for 3 people, only two people can sit comfortably. There is a reclining armrest and adjustable headrests. The sedan boasts a good trunk, designed for 502 liters (the Chevrolet Aveo hatchback received 290 liters, and if you remove the backrests - 653 liters). The sedan can also remove the rear backrests, which can significantly increase usable space. The underground niche contains tools and a small spare tire.

Salon

The Aveo interior is the personification of practicality without any newfangled design delights. Despite the cheap and hard plastic of the front panel, everything here is located quite conveniently. The instruments are easy to read, all switches and deflectors are located in convenient places, and the build quality is good. There are also special niches for small items. The steering wheel is adjustable for reach and height, but you can’t raise or lower the driver’s seat. Therefore, for a comfortable fit in it you have to get used to it.

The interior's shortcomings are manifested in insufficient capacity - three passengers in the rear seats will be frankly cramped. Well, cheap plastic shows up during use - over time, the front panel begins to squeak noticeably.

The updated Chevrolet Aveo T300 is not officially sold in Russia, but the company sells cars in Kazakhstan, Ukraine, and so on. In this case, the engine compartment received 4-cylinder naturally aspirated gasoline engines, volumes of 1.4 and 1.6 liters, respectively, having a vertical arrangement. They have multi-point fuel injection, variable valve timing and a 16-valve DOHC gas distribution mechanism.

In the first case, the engine produces 100 “horses” (130 Nm), and in the second – 115 horsepower (155 Nm). Fuel consumption of the II generation Chevrolet Aveo is 5.9-7.1 liters per “hundred” kilometers in mixed mode.

It is important to say that other countries have different “engines”. For example, the car has naturally aspirated and turbocharged gasoline engines with a displacement of 1.2-1.4 liters, which generate 86-140 horsepower. In addition to this, the “American” boasts 1.2-liter turbodiesel 4-cylinder engines producing 75-95 “horses”.

Transmission

Two engines received a 5-speed manual or 6-speed automatic (optional) gearbox. All torque is transmitted only to the front wheels. Already in 11.3-13.1 seconds the car reaches the first “hundred”. The maximum speed is 174-189 kilometers per hour.

Chassis

When releasing the new product, the company’s specialists decided to use the global “GM Gamma II” platform, which implies a transverse engine arrangement and extensive use of high-strength steel in the body structure (it accounts for about 60 percent). The front part has an independent McPherson type suspension, and the rear has a semi-independent torsion beam system. There are anti-roll bars everywhere.

The car also has a rack and pinion steering system, equipped with hydraulic or electric power steering (depending on which engine). The braking system has not undergone any changes - the front has ventilated discs, and the rear has drum brakes, which are complemented by ABS and EBD.

Safety

Engineers managed to bring the updated Chevrolet Aveo T300 to a new level of safety. The car boasts:

Problems during operation

Aveo is characterized by characteristic problems that often appear on different cars.

  1. Defective body metal. The thickness of the body metal is not thick enough, which can lead to the formation of cracks in the body. Particularly characteristic of Aveo is the formation of cracks in the places where the rear seat backs are attached. They first appear as a crackling sound in the trunk area when driving on an uneven surface. If you ignore the problem, the cracks will gradually grow, which can only be corrected by spot welding the body.
  2. The weak point of the Aveo is the front shock absorber struts. The problem is manifested by characteristic knocking and squeaking when driving on uneven surfaces, when the suspension needs to work out the unevenness of the road surface. Therefore, the racks have to be constantly changed. Ideally, you need to replace them with reinforced ones, which will reduce wear and get rid of annoying knocking.
  3. Rapid wear of engine hydraulic compensators. The problem is manifested by a characteristic knocking sound coming from the engine compartment when driving. To accurately identify the cause of a breakdown, computer diagnostics is necessary.
  4. Excessive oil change interval and engine oil starvation. By default, the manufacturer has set the engine oil change interval to 15 thousand km for a model with a 1.2-liter engine. If you change the oil according to the manual, you will notice increased wear on the camshaft and clogging of the oil line nozzle. Oil starvation threatens wear of the cylinder head, which can only be corrected by replacing it. To avoid the problem, it is necessary to reduce the oil change interval to 10 thousand km.
  5. All Aveo engines are characterized by prolonged warm-up in the cold season. This is especially true for the 1.2 liter engine. The reason for this phenomenon lies in the thermostat, which rarely withstands more than 50 thousand kilometers.

In general, Aveo can be characterized as a car that is worth the money. The model's shortcomings are more than compensated for by its low cost - among competitors for this money you can only find Chinese or domestic cars, which have no fewer shortcomings and inherent problems than the Aveo.

Options and prices

European car enthusiasts are already enjoying the new product, but the car has not yet been officially presented in Russia. Sales of the Chevrolet Aveo T300 were completed at the beginning of 2015. In neighboring Kazakhstan, the 2022 car comes only in a 3-volume body and has a 115-horsepower engine.

But the body is quite strong, resisting corrosion noticeably better than its predecessor, but mainly due to high-quality painting. The emerging areas of rust are associated primarily with mechanical damage to the paintwork. Therefore, it is better to treat chips, abrasions, cracks and dents immediately. Massive traces of rust on the body are most likely a consequence of poor-quality body repairs and poor repainting of elements.

What about the suspension and brakes?
