The VAZ-2108 Sputnik car turned out to be, of course, more reliable to drive, safe and economical compared to the classic Zhiguli. The corrosion resistance of the body has also become objectively better. Cars of the first production suffered, as is customary, from “childhood diseases”, which the plant eliminated directly during production, on consumers. Particularly annoying at that time were the short-lived and terribly scarce components of the electronic ignition system (especially the early model of the switch 36.3734). However, Solex-type carburetors did not allow much relaxation (and still do not), not to mention the current struts, wear and tear of the covers and the CV joints themselves, the “rattle” of the front panel and upholstery, and the unreliable design of the door locks.
They were able to partially cope with some of the malfunctions on later releases, for example, the self-loosening of the front hub nuts and the breaking of the clutch cable, but most of the problems safely continue to poison the lives of Samar owners. However, the creaks and crackles that the upholstery and panels make can also indicate improper use (with overload, which caused the body to move) or a loose fit of the upholstery panels to the body that was corrected after an accident. Despite the wide doors, getting in and out of the rear three-seat seat is difficult. This circumstance, as a rule, is interpreted in favor of a certain image of youth sportiness, although all over the world it is rather a sign of a “car for housewives” (cheaper and safer when transporting small children - they will not fall out).
The interior is equipped with tapestry anatomical seats with sufficient adjustment margin in three directions, the door upholstery does not suffer from defects, like other peripherals in the cabin (although they begin to “accompany” after a short mileage). Among the annoying little things are the lack of head restraints for the rear seats and ashtrays, inconvenient access to the front seat seat belts (the body pillar is moved too far back), and the high location of the trunk edge. The spare wheel is located in the trunk niche. The trunk capacity increases when the rear seat backrest is folded (unfortunately, it does not fold in parts and does not take a completely horizontal position, which does not allow transporting really bulky items).
Initially, the base engine for the VAZ-2108 “eight” was a 1.3-liter 65-horsepower (VAZ-2108) with a four-speed gearbox. With proper and timely maintenance, it is distinguished by sufficient reliability. It is capable of traveling 150 thousand km without problems (provided the owner has a non-racing temperament). The only thing you have to put up with is the frequent replacement of the oil filter and the need to service the ignition and adjust the valves only at a service station. Somewhat later, for export to some countries, they began production of a modification of the VAZ-21081 with a 1.1-liter 53-horsepower, not too temperamental engine. On the market, versions with a separate “beak” in the front end and a “short wing” (until 1991) are giving way to VAZ-21083 models with a “long wing”.
There are quite a lot of offers for the sale of VAZ-21081 and VAZ-21083 with a velor interior and a more convenient “luxury” panel with a tachometer and a trip computer (standard for VAZ-21099 sedans and versions with injection engines), which are also installed on cars that have been in an accident (to charge more). You should be wary of offers from young car owners to sell non-standard cars 6-7 years old, stuffed with various accessories and “music”. However, in recent years, many small tuning companies have emerged, turning the G8 into an “almost coupe”. Particularly popular is the replacement of serial struts with imported gas-filled ones, modification of engines, etc. At one time, the unsuccessful design of the “beak” gave rise to a whole layer of small firms and firms that tried to produce various overhead design details that changed the unsuccessful appearance of the “eight”.

The operation of fine-tuning the original geometry of the body and its parts is considered very delicate. It definitely requires individual skill and increased accuracy. Without the necessary equipment, such as a slipway machine, it is almost impossible to complete it.
On the other hand, many craftsmen have adapted themselves in garage conditions to bring skewed body elements to the required dimensions. True, this is done with errors, but they imply a slight deviation from the original indicators.
Most often, in the current conditions, the car’s suspension has begun to fail. Such deformation occurs, clearly, due to bad roads. And its displacement is very difficult to determine. After the car falls into a hole or receives a strong impact, it is highly recommended to immediately check the condition of the car for wheel alignment.

VAZ 2108 was initially equipped with four-cylinder 8-valve carburetor engines of 1.1, 1.3 and 1.5 liters. Since 1994, engines with distributed fuel injection began to be installed on cars. However, this did not stop the production of V8s with carburetor engines.
The main advantages that distinguished cars of this series from other cars of those years were the technical characteristics of the VAZ 2108. Testing for deformation can be carried out using the following methods, succinctly called “old-fashioned”. They will help you get at least a rough idea of the condition of the metal frame of the VAZ 2108:
- Open and lightly slam all the V8 doors and the hood one by one. Don’t try to make every effort, act carefully. In case of insufficient, loose closing of the doors the first time, there is a curvature of the pillars. If the hood does not close tightly, it is recommended to check the side members for bending.
Note. The misalignment of parts may be only a few millimeters, but this is already a problem. So, when selling a car, the discovery of such a “jamb” will certainly lead to a reset of the initial price.
- Another inspection option involves a visual inspection of the side of the car. This way it will be possible to detect existing irregularities and increased gaps;
- Glass should also be subjected to visual inspection. If cracks are noticeable on them, especially vertical ones on one side, there is a curvature of the racks;
- Compliance is also checked while the vehicle is moving. So, the G8 driver is recommended to increase the gas on a good, flat road to 50 km/h, and then lower the steering wheel for a split second. If the car pulls in any direction, there is a displacement on that side. The same experiment should be carried out at a speed of 90 km/h.

Body modernization through extension
To protect the body from rapid deformation, today it is customary to simultaneously carry out not only preventive procedures aimed at restoring the original shape, but also tuning. Extending the body of the VAZ 2108 is one of these possibilities.
