Autostart Starline A91: setting up basic functions

Although the Starline A91 is outdated by modern standards (lack of flexible channels, support for CAN/LIN buses, use of a 433 MHz radio channel), there are still a lot of alarm systems of this model in service. And questions often arise about setting it up: for example, how to set up Starline A91 autostart by time or set autostart from the key fob. Especially if the car was purchased on the secondary market, and the instructions for the alarm system installed on it have long been lost.

What can StarLine A91 do in terms of autostart?

  • Random autostart: can be performed at any time when the car is in the area of reliable radio reception or an external GSM module is connected to the alarm system;
  • Auto start on alarm clock: the car will start once at the time specified in the alarm clock settings;
  • Autostart "Starline A91" using a timer allows the car to independently warm up the engine at intervals of 2,3,4 or 24 hours from the moment the mode is activated;
  • You can set the “Starline A91” temperature so that engine warming begins when the engine temperature drops below a specified threshold, but no more than once per hour.

2. Selecting the type of car engine

The next parameter that needs to be pre-programmed is the engine type, petrol or diesel. To make this selection, you must enter function programming mode No. 10 and select:

  • Option 1 – petrol engine (factory setting). The starter activation delay time after turning on the ignition during the first attempt to start the engine is 2 seconds.
  • Option 2 – diesel engine with a starter activation delay time of 4 seconds.
  • Option 3 – diesel engine with a starter activation delay time of 6 seconds.
  • Option 4 – diesel engine with a starter activation delay time of 10 seconds.

Basic autorun settings

To use the Starline A91 autostart, the alarm system must be correctly connected and configured. Basic system settings are set as follows:

  1. With the ignition off and security disabled, quickly press the security system service button 6 times.
  2. Turn on the ignition without delay. The alarm should sound six times, indicating that it has successfully entered the second settings menu (autorun settings).
  3. By successively pressing the service button, select the desired function (from 1 to 12). After each press, the alarm system will use siren signals to confirm the number of the selected function, with a short siren signal meaning one, and a long one meaning five. That is, four short signals mean that function 4 is selected, a long and short signal means function 6, two long and two short signals mean function 12.
  4. The required value of the selected function is set by the buttons of the main remote control: a short press of buttons 1, 2 and 3 sets this function to the corresponding value by number, a long and then short press of button 1 sets the function to value 4.
  5. After setting all the necessary settings, exit the menu by turning off the ignition.

The following set of functions is relevant for the user (some of them are programmed in accordance with the connection diagram to a specific car, and changing these settings can cause autostart failure):

  • function 2 sets the duration of engine operation after forced starting or starting according to an algorithm (alarm clock, timer, temperature). In function values 1, 2 and 3, the warm-up duration is 10, 20 and 30 minutes. In option 4, the engine will not be turned off automatically; it will need to be turned off each time from the key fob;
  • function 3 allows you to set the warm-up on the Starline A91 on a timer for 2,3,4 and 24 hours;
  • function 4 configures autostart based on the Starline A91 temperature. In options 1 to 4, the threshold, when the temperature drops below which the engine will start, is -5, -10, -18 and -25 degrees Celsius, respectively;
  • function 6 determines the logic of the operation of the light indicators during engine warm-up (depending on the connection of the alarm system to a particular car, these may be turn signals or clearance lights). They can light up pulsed (option 1), constantly (option 2) or be turned off (3 and 4). Please note that when the alarm is connected not directly to the lamps, but to the hazard warning button, the turn signals in option 2 will also flash, since in fact, in this case, the “hazard warning lights” will be constantly on;
  • function 9 sets the maximum duration of starter cranking: 0.8, 1.4, 2 or 6 seconds. Please note that this maximum duration is only relevant for indirectly determining the fact of a successful start (the alarm is not connected via a tacho signal). We recommend leaving it at the value that was set by the installer;
  • function 10 sets the delay between turning on the ignition and cranking the starter: 2, 5, 10 or 20 seconds. For diesel engines with glow plugs in winter, it makes sense to set a longer delay;
  • function 12 determines how the alarm will enter the ignition support mode, starting the autostart reservation algorithm. Since autostart reservation is only necessary for cars with a manual transmission (“software neutral” is needed to ensure that the car is not left in gear), for cars with an automatic transmission it is necessary to set function 12 to 4 (disabled). Setting this value to 4 on cars with manual transmission will block autostart; this can be used to completely disable autostart of the Starline A91. Reservation in option 1 occurs automatically when the hand brake is applied at the moment the ignition is turned off. Some cars may stall during the pause between turning off the ignition with the key and the activation of the autostart power relay, in which case the function must be set to value 3 (automatically when the handbrake is tightened). If you do not need automatic reservation, set the function to value 2 - reservation will occur if, with the engine running and the handbrake applied, you press button 2 on the key fob.

How to set up a starline a93 alarm key fob
StarLine A91 Dialog is a modern car security system with a “Quick Dialogue” radio control dialogue code and an engine auto-start function. Thus, “Quick Dialogue” is considered a control code with individual encryption keys, which excludes intelligent electronic hacking.

Resistant to all code grabbers. In order to protect the code, we apply the dialog code algorithm perfected at this stage. Complemented by the innovative frequency hopping method. In this method, when transmitting commands, the patented OEM transceiver changes frequencies many times according to a special program during the period of each transmission.

What is a car alarm

How to connect the 6-pin autostart connector:

  1. The red wire is plus “+12V” (the pink wire for the central lock).
  2. The yellow wire is the IGN1 output for maintaining the ignition.
  3. The blue wire doesn't connect anywhere.
  4. The black-yellow thick and black-yellow thin wires are connected as follows: cut the red wire of the ignition switch, then the thick wire to the starter, and the thin wire to the ignition switch.
  5. The green wire does not connect anywhere.

Ignition switch pinout:

  • blue wire - +12V for the mic of the key sensor to be inserted;
  • black - when the doors are open, it turns out to be a minus;
  • red - +12V to the starter;
  • black-blue - +12V after the ignition is on;
  • green - +12V when the key is inserted;
  • white - +12V per LED;
  • pink - +12V from the battery.

How to connect the central locking:

Forced autorun

To turn on Starline A91 autostart at any desired time, use the key fob. Naturally, a car with a manual transmission must first go through the specified “soft neutral” procedure and then not be disarmed.

To start the engine, first press button 1 of the key fob for a long time, after a short squeak press button 3. The display on the screen will change to “St”, the car will turn on the ignition and after the time specified by function 10 in the settings menu, it will try to start the engine. If the start is successful, the display will change again: a “smoke” will be drawn near the exhaust pipe on the display, and the countdown of the time remaining until the engine will turn off will begin. For example, if function 2 is set to value 3 (30 minutes), then the display will count down from “r30” to “r00”, after which the motor will be turned off. If the warm-up time is set to “infinity” (value 4), then the display will constantly indicate “g99”.

Since setting up the Starline A91 autostart requires access to the car, it is possible, if necessary, to extend the warm-up time remotely. To do this, while the engine is running, you need to press the same autostart buttons again - first button 1 for a long time, and then button 3 briefly. The countdown timer will be reset to the initial value and will start counting again from the interval specified in the settings - for example, if the warm-up time is set to 10 minutes, and at the 9th minute you extend the warm-up time, the motor will run for a total of 19 minutes.

To turn off the engine before automatic shutdown, press button 2 for a long time, and then button 3 briefly.

Preparing for launch

Preparation for automatic engine start using the Starline A93 complex involves programming the operating mode (using the remote control). Additionally, a number of actions are performed to ensure that there is no kinematic connection between the motor flywheel and the drive axles. The machine is installed in a ventilated area in accordance with the recommendations given in the technical documentation for the alarm.

Engine with manual transmission

On vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, the shift lever must be in neutral position. The method of neutral installation depends on the programming of the complex’s processor unit. The final result of the algorithm is to turn off the transmission, which will ensure the safety of Starline autorun.

Supported primary programming techniques:

  • tighten the parking brake lever and then turn off the ignition (automatic algorithm);
  • turn on the brake, and then press the button located on the remote control (without unlocking the doors);
  • activate the handbrake (simplified algorithm).

After completing the first stage of preparation for the automatic start of the car engine, you should remove the key from the lock and then leave the car. The engine will either stall when the door is closed, or continue to operate in turbo timer mode (depending on the setting). Then the owner turns on the security mode of the Starline 93 alarm.

Engine with automatic transmission

Cars with an automatic transmission are prepared for automatic start according to the following algorithm:

  1. Stop the car and secure the brakes with the parking gear.
  2. Set the gearbox control lever to the parking position.
  3. Leave the cabin and then close the locks using the remote control.

Auto start on alarm clock

A one-time auto-start on an alarm clock is not possible if the start-up on a timer is also activated, and vice versa. Only one mode, the one specified last, will be active. That is, for example, if you have set auto-start every 24 hours, but you additionally set an alarm for some time and enabled auto-start on the alarm clock, the next auto-warm-up of the Starline A91 will occur exactly at the time set on the alarm clock, even if the next start is on The timer must be earlier than this moment.

To use auto-start on alarms, configure:

  • current time on the key fob screen;
  • alarm time.

Both of these operations can be performed simultaneously by entering the key fob settings. Hold down button 3 for a long time until the key fob plays first a long signal, then one short and two short signals. The clock indication on the screen will begin to blink, buttons 1 and 2 will increase and decrease the value. Next, by pressing button 3, go to setting the minutes, then set the alarm in the same way.

After setting the alarm time, pressing button 3 again will switch the key fob to the mode of turning the alarm on and off (inscriptions ON and OFF). Auto start by alarm will only work when set to ON.

Then activate the autorun itself on the alarm clock. It, like other methods of software autorun, is activated through the cursor menu at the bottom of the screen. It turns on by long pressing button 3, but you need to release it after the first short signal. Then, with short presses of button 3, you need to place the cursor on the desired icon, turn it on with button 1 or turn it off with button 2. The icon representing an alarm clock is responsible for autostart on the alarm clock.

Replacing key fobs

During operation, negative situations may occur with the driver's key fob, as a result of which it may be damaged mechanically or in other ways, and it may also be lost. After this, a new remote control is required to continue using the built-in service.

Reprogramming is carried out using the central electronic unit of the system. The kit usually includes two remote controls, which differ functionally and visually.

The main one has a liquid crystal display, and the backup element does not have this option.

When programming a new remote control, it makes no difference whether this module has vibration feedback. There is a certain pattern in which it is possible to use interchangeability:

  • B 64, E60, D64 are equipped with a six-bit system, so they can be used in parallel mode;
  • A4 and A2 also have similar internal parameters;
  • Series B blocks having two lines are interchangeable;
  • It is also possible to work together with D94, B94, E

Other attempts to bring the sets to a common denominator will not yield success. The maximum number of simultaneously operating remote controls in one system is limited to four.

Autorun by timer

Autorun by timer is turned on and off in the cursor menu of the key fob using an icon depicting a rotating fan. In this case, a car with a manual transmission must go through “program neutral”, since after activating the icon, the first autostart will automatically occur, and from this moment the intervals specified by function 3 of the settings menu will begin to count.

Attention! When using periodic autostarts based on timer and temperature, be sure to make sure that function 2 is not set to value 4!

Video about how to start and stop the engine from a Starline communicator. Taken by user Anton Baitov.

Installing a security system allows you to introduce additional functions that simplify the operation of the car. The user can force start the power unit or turn off the car from the Starline A93 key fob after autostart. Alarms also allow you to control the operation of the power unit using SMS messages or a mobile application installed on a smartphone.

Autostart based on temperature

Temperature-based autostart is activated in the cursor menu using the “thermometer” icon. This function is available if, when installing the alarm, the sensor included in the kit was connected, and this sensor is working. After activating the mode, the first autostart will occur no less than 1 hour later, regardless of the engine temperature.

Why it may not work and how to fix it

If it is impossible to enable autorun from the remote control, the reason should be sought in the following:

  1. Incorrect setting of alarm unit operating modes. It is necessary to check and adjust the parameters.
  2. Damage or failure of the control key fob or alarm. Check the operation of the system with an additional remote control.
  3. To troubleshoot the remote control, replace the battery; if this does not help, the device must be disassembled. Often the cause of problems is the exposure of the communicator board to dust or moisture. After disassembling the case, the user needs to clean the circuit and also get rid of traces of moisture by drying the device in a warm and dry place. To remove dirt, you can use a cotton swab or a dry cloth treated with alcohol.
  4. If the alarm operates from an additional key fob, then it is necessary to replace the battery in it.
  5. Another reason could be a break or short in the control wiring. It is advisable to fix this problem in a specialized service. Damaged wires can be identified visually. First of all, it is recommended to check all contacts on the control unit, temperature sensor and ignition switch.
  6. If only automatic start by alarm or timer does not work, then you need to check that the current time and the main options of the remote control are configured correctly. But this is only relevant if the remote engine start based on temperature is functioning.
  7. The cause of the problem may be related to the standard immobilizer - there may be a conflict in the operation of the engine blocker and alarm system. To fix this problem, you will need to additionally install an immo bypass module. You can use crawlers from any manufacturer, but it is recommended to give preference to Starline blocks.
  8. If this does not help, then you should contact the service for a more detailed analysis and purchase a new remote control or alarm.

Autostart faults

If the Starline A91 autostart does not work, make sure that:

  1. On cars with a manual transmission, the “soft neutral” procedure was performed, and the car was not disarmed after that (disarming disables the autostart reservation). The handbrake indicator must be lit.
  2. There is no indication on the key fob screen that the door or hood is open (not closed enough or the limit switch is faulty). Check and correct the problem.
  3. While near the car, try performing a forced auto start. If the command is not processed at all (the ignition does not turn on), check the connection of the autostart power relays and the condition of the fuses. If the ignition is turned on, the starter operates, but starting does not occur, check the functionality of the immobilizer bypass. If the engine catches, but the alarm turns off the ignition after that, this means that it does not recognize the fact of starting (it does not receive a tacho signal if it is configured for it, or there is no transition in the signal level from the generator when configured to “lamp” - depends on the specific connection and requires inspection by an auto electrician).

Instructions for preparing to start the engine for manual transmission

To do this you need to do the following:

  1. Activate the handbrake.
  2. Move the manual transmission lever (manual gearbox) to the neutral position.
  3. Leave the vehicle and turn on the car alarm.
