Ball joint Lada Largus - replacement, article, video

The ball joint is the most important element of the front suspension of a car. It allows you to perform basic control functions, turns and provides stable movement in a straight line. The design of the part ensures that the wheel is fixed in the vertical plane and rotates freely in the horizontal plane when turning. The ball joint was invented 40 years ago by an Italian engineer from the Fiat corporation, and its design has remained almost unchanged all this time.

Ball joint Lada Largus - device

The ball joint on the Lada Largus is a non-separable part, consisting of a one-piece cast body, pin, boot and polymer liner. In the ball device you can also find pressure washers that serve as clamps. Below you can see what the ball joint looks like in cross-section.

When you fall into a hole or run over an uneven surface, the polymer liner of the ball joint takes the entire impact and wears out over time. When a gap occurs between the body and the ball pin, the ball joint begins to play and makes a characteristic knock when driving on an uneven road.

Parameters of supports for Largus

A ball joint has a basic structural unit - its load-bearing element - a special metal pin. Its lower part rotates in a hemisphere, and the upper end of this component is connected to the steering axle bracket. The hemisphere is located in the support body and rotates in a polymer shell, which is designed to dampen vibrations and prevent mutual friction of the metal surfaces of the part (hemisphere and body).

The product body itself is pressed into the suspension arm cage. To prevent dirt and other debris from getting into the working element (hemisphere), there is a rubber boot between the finger and the body.

Regarding Lada Largus. Note that on versions of the model produced before 2013, the ball joint had a pin with a groove and a diameter of 16 mm.

On modern modifications of the station wagon, the support pins have a pin increased to 18 mm in diameter, which has a side groove.

Due to their purpose, supports endure increased loads during operation, so the requirements for their reliability and quality are very high. For example, a finger must withstand the applied external force aimed at tearing it out of the body, reaching 5 tons.

To guide manufacturers in terms of quality indicators of supports, GOST 52433-2005 “Ball joints” was specially developed and implemented. Technical requirements and test methods." The provisions of this regulation must be followed not only by Russian, but also by foreign manufacturers.

Today's spare parts market will delight you with a wide range of support offers, each of which has its own catalog number, among which the following brands are the most profitable and confidence-inspiring:

  • "Febi", "Ruville", "Mapco" and "Meyle" (all Germany);
  • "Monroe" and "Delphi" (both USA);
  • "Tork avto" (Türkiye).

The price of these products can vary by 40% or more, although the quality indicators will be approximately the same level. Here, the particular choice includes the personal preferences of the particular owner of the Lada Largus..

Ball joint Lada Largus article number (401604793R, 8200298455)

Two types of ball joints were installed on the Lada Largus. They differ in the method of fastening, namely with a finger. On some, the finger has a cut in a circle, and on others - only in one place. How do you know which ball joint is needed?

If the car was manufactured from 2012 to 2014, then you need to buy a ball joint with article number 401604793R. It looks like this:

Cars from 2014 to the present have been equipped with ball joints with article number 8200298455. This ball joint has a slightly different cut in the pin for bolt fixation.

If you have a transitional model from 2014, then it is difficult to say for sure which ball joints are installed on your car. The easiest way is to remove the ball and select a similar one in the store.

Ball selection, articles

In many ways, the operation of the car depends on the choice of spare parts for the suspension. Since the ball joint is responsible for the angle of inclination of the wheels at the moment of movement, the selection of this part must be taken seriously.

Video about choosing a ball joint for Largus

Replacing the ball joint Lada Largus

The first step is to remove the wheel bolts from the front wheels and jack up the car. Be sure to place wheel chocks under the rear wheels.

Next, unscrew the bolt from the steering knuckle to remove the ball joint pin. The seat may rust, so we spray everything with penetrating lubricant and, if necessary, clean everything with a wire brush.

Unscrew the stabilizer bar bolt and the two rear lever mounting bolts.

We take out the lever together with the ball joint and proceed directly to replacing the Lada Largus ball joint.

It is necessary to remove the old ball joint from the lever. There are two ways to go. Either simply knock out the ball with a hammer (quick and easy), or press it out using a vice or garage press (not fast, but easy). Since this ball is no longer required to be reinstalled, I try to choose the easiest way - knock out the ball with a hammer.

But before that, you need to remove the ring stopper. Just pry it up with two flathead screwdrivers and remove it.

We rest the edges of the lever against a pipe of the appropriate diameter and knock out the support with a sharp blow into the ball rod.

We clean the mounting hole of the ball joint in the lever from rust with a wire brush.

We unpack the new Lada Largus ball joint and begin pressing. We do not remove the protective cap of the ball joint until the ball is installed in the lever.

Using a press or vice, press the new ball into place until it stops. Don't forget to put the stopper in place. We do this without removing the protective cap so as not to damage the boot.

Important! Do not press or drive the ball through your finger! In this case, you can damage the polymer liner, which will lead to rapid failure of the entire assembly.

We assemble the lever in the reverse order. If it is necessary to replace the ball joint on the second side, then we perform a similar procedure.

Malfunctions, inspection and possibility of repair

Among the main reasons for premature wear of bearings is the ingress of dirt and abrasives into the hinge body. This option is possible if the protective boot breaks. The initial stage of this situation is accompanied by a suggestive creaking of the finger. There are also less difficulties when turning and unauthorized changes in the trajectory of the Lada Largus car, which runs in a straight line. This situation involves checking the condition of the supports and, if a defect is detected, urgent replacement.

It is possible to diagnose the part yourself. For this purpose, we hang out the required side of the car. We check the play of the steering knuckle by applying force to the hinge. We use a suitable mount. A worn-out product will immediately make itself known with a characteristic clicking sound inside the body of the part. If there is no play, and there are places where the shell is torn on the boot, then such a support should also be replaced, since it has very little time left to “live”.

Sometimes owners of Lada Largus. they resort not to replacing supports, but to their repair (so-called restoration). This work is very labor-intensive and requires the use of special equipment (press and other devices). You will also need to acquire polymer materials that will be integrated into the body of the product. We recommend entrusting work of this nature to professionals who have experience and equipment, although there are plenty of videos on this subject on the Internet.

Let us remind you that the supports are one of the parts that are responsible for safety, so the best measure would still be to replace the ball joint, preferably with the original version.

How long do ball joints last on a Lada Largus?

Ball joints on Lada Largus are consumables that require constant inspection and periodic replacement. This is not to say that this is a weak unit that constantly fails.

In general, the chassis of the Lada Largus was borrowed from the Renault Logan, which was very, very good in terms of suspension reliability. Pay attention to taxi drivers who choose Renault Logan for work. Believe me, taxi drivers will not buy a brittle and damp car in order to constantly bother with its repair.

If we summarize the reviews from various forums and information sources, the ball joints on the Lada Largus last approximately 50-60 thousand km, after which they require replacement. Of course, there are isolated cases when ball bearings have traveled more than 100 thousand km, but this is most likely an exception to the rule than a pattern.

Here, not only the quality of the part plays a big role, but also the driving style. If the car is used by a careful driver and mainly in the city, then the ball joints last much longer. If the car is often used on bad roads, and even by not the most careful driver, then the ball joints will require replacement much earlier.

We change ball joints, steering ends and silent blocks of front levers in the service

A note about what investments in the chassis await the future owner of Largus at 70-80 thousand mileage; how much will it cost to replace ball joints, steering ends and silent blocks of front arms; what is the cost of wheel alignment? Real prices for Yaroslavl

Greetings to all future Largus breeders!

By the end of spring, the mileage on my Larick was approaching 70 thousand. The snow has almost melted. And one day an unpleasant rubber squeak appeared from the suspension. It was heard especially clearly when turning the steering wheel in place and when driving at low speeds (up to 20-30 km/h). In traffic jams you could hear it in neighboring cars.

It was not a squeak in the area of the upper shock absorber mount, which occurs between the cup and the rubber washer. In my case, everything was quiet there.

Got under the car. I examined all the anthers. Visually they were intact and dry. I checked the play in the horizontal direction. And he was! And on both sides. And the cause was most likely the ball joints. Although the creaking was only on the left side.

A little later I went for suspension diagnostics. I called several car services in advance. In one of them, they asked for 700 rubles to check the Largus chassis. Most offered a free check. The calculation is simple - the person will choose further repairs from them. In my case it worked. Where I did the diagnostics, I went there for repairs.

On diagnostics

I won't name the service. He is well known to many in Yaroslavl.

They looked at the car in front of me. The left ball and right steering end, as well as the left silent block of the rear beam, were found to be faulty.

They offered the following prices for replacement of these spare parts:

  • ball replacement - 1160 RUR/piece
  • steering tips - 350 rub./piece
  • replacement of silent blocks - 320 rubles.

The cost of work in other services, for example, replacing a ball joint, was announced in the region of 1300 - 1500 rubles. a piece. It seemed expensive to me.

I almost went to the Renault garage service (we have one), but at the last moment I abandoned it. The guys had a stupid time ride. There was a recording, a specific time was appointed when to arrive. But when I arrived, another car was being repaired. I didn't wait. Left. They lost a client in me.

Many people ask the question “How many times can you change ball joints on Largus?” According to technology, the balls are pressed into the levers and their replacement is not provided at all. The repair manual tells us that they are replaced only together with the lever. But once they change the services, however, they warn that the second time the levers need to be changed.

Next, after comparing prices and disadvantages, I decided to have it repaired in the same place where I did the diagnostics. Spare parts had to be purchased separately.

Names and numbers of spare parts, as well as my costs for them

1. Ball. I purchased JBJ721 from TRW service. Cost 685 rub.

The appearance of the original ball is like this:

My Largus left the production line in June 2013. As you can see from the photo, the ball is still of the old type, with a radial groove and an M10 bolt. In 2013, they began installing reinforced balls with a side groove and an M12 bolt. Therefore, before purchasing a ball yourself, check which part is installed specifically on your car. Especially if the year of manufacture is 2013.

These analogues should be suitable:

  • Lemforder - article 2946901 (Türkiye)
  • Asam - 30132
  • Sasic - 4005280
  • Forward - RL2904192 (Russia)

But the number of the original ball is 401604793R (France).

2. Steering tips. Markings on relatives are not indicated. It's not clear what manufacturer it is. Here is a photo of the details:

I bought TRW, not in service. It came out to 1985 rubles. for a couple. Left 954 RUR, right 1031 RUR. The articles are:

  • JTE1135 - right
  • JTE1136 - left

Of the analogues, these should be suitable (art. right):

  • Lemforder - article 3093701 (Türkiye)
  • Asam - 30139
  • Sasic - 4006157
  • Forward - RL3414056 (Russia)

But the number of the original tip is 6001550443.

3. Silent blocks of front levers.

Here is a photo of the original silent block:

I bought new ones from a service center. These were Sasic 4001528. Price 350 each.

Of the analogues, these should be suitable (art. right):

  • Asam - 30292
  • Lynx - C8617
  • Forward - AFRL64002245 (Russia)

But the original spare part number is 6040096299.

At first they wanted to install Forward, but found a defect in them and offered Sasic at the same price.

On repair

Here's a short summary of the replacement.

Just like during diagnostics, it was possible to be in the repair area and observe the process. It was clear that the guys were doing routine work, and without much enthusiasm. Removing the steering ends, then the ball joints. Both happened with the help of pullers. The balls were knocked out of the lever clamped in a vice using a sledgehammer. Then they were pressed into place using a press using tools. I asked to see the condition of the silent blocks. For some reason they didn’t realize it themselves. It turned out that they also needed to be changed. They installed French Sasic. The whole job took approximately 1.5 hours.

As a result, the squeak disappeared. What was the reason? Most likely spherical.

Wheel alignment

A wheel alignment on Largus in Yaroslavl will cost from 600 to 1000 rubles.

I made it for 600 rubles. The steering wheel began to rotate from lock to lock in 3.2 turns, as expected.

Expenses

The overall cost total is:

  • Ball 1370 rub. Work 2320 rub.
  • Steering tips 1985 rub. Work 700 rub.
  • Silent blocks 700 rub. Work 640 rub.

The total was 7715 rubles.

Condition of spare parts after 70 thousand

This is what the ball looks like. The lubricant is no longer in its best condition, but without foreign impurities - sand and water. Anthers on both are in good condition. But the finger moves in the body by about 1 mm.

And this is a photo of one of the steering tips. Namely the one that failed. The finger moves without much resistance, almost freely. Water and sand are visible under the boot.

And finally, silent blocks. The photo shows that peeling has appeared on the rubber tabs.

Finally

Taking good care of the suspension and using it in a gentle manner will prolong the life of the suspension of any car. In relation to Largus, you should not often transport loads that are too heavy for it. More than 500 kg. Suspension elements and ball parts in particular suffer first of all. It is also worth checking the anthers periodically and listening to extraneous sounds.

Next time the ball joints will be changed together with the lever. Accordingly, silent blocks too.

That's all. Happy shopping everyone!

Ball joint with lever Lada Largus

There is an opinion that Lada Largus ball joints only come assembled with a lever. And many car owners change the lever assembly. This costs much more than replacing one ball joint.

However, in some cases, for example, if both rear silent blocks on the lever are torn, you can think about replacing the lever assembly. Most often, this is easier than replacing complete silent blocks and does not always cost more.

It happens that the mounting hole for the ball breaks and the only correct solution is to replace the lever assembly.

To order a ball joint with a lever for Lada Largus, you can use the following article numbers:

545011362R — Front suspension arm assembly with ball Lada Largus, left 545004269R — Front suspension arm assembly with ball Lada Largus, right

Lada Largus ball with side groove

Ball joints on Lada Largus before 2014 and after are distinguished by the shape of the side groove on the pin. The ball body is no different, but the fingers differ in the shape of the side groove.

Until 2014, the side groove of the Lada Largus ball had this shape:

After 2014 and to the present time, the ball joints of the Lada Largus (van, crossover, station wagon) have the following side groove:

Accordingly, the Lada Largus ball mounting bolts before and after 2014 are different.

Article number and price for the original ball joint

On the Lada Largus car, two types of ball joints are used. Until June 2013, the knot had a finger with a diameter of 16 mm. An annular groove was made on the support. The article number for the old-style ball is 401604793R. The price of the part ranges from 680 to 850 rubles.

In the 2014 model range, new types of supports began to be used. The diameter of their finger was increased to 18 mm. The groove has also changed. It became lateral, which, according to the designers, increased the reliability of the unit. The catalog number of the new ball is 40160-2523R. The cost of the support is 500-1400 rubles.

Despite the fact that ball joints of different years of manufacture are successfully pressed into seats instead of each other, experienced car owners do not recommend doing this. Using a “foreign” support may cause a knock in the suspension, and a number of difficulties will arise during installation.

The balls are fixed using a bolt with an increased diameter inside. The old and new type support mounts are not interchangeable. When purchasing an unsuitable unit, car owners have to bore a groove for the bolt, which does not have the best effect on the reliability and safety of the suspension.

Repair of ball joint Lada Largus

If the Lada Largus ball joint is out of order and starts knocking, then it can be repaired. This is done as follows. A hole is drilled on the back side of the ball and a thread is cut into it. Next, molten polyamide is pumped through the hole. After which a special plug is screwed into the hole.

But due to the low cost of a new part, this procedure is not justified. Therefore, it is faster and cheaper to replace the ball joint with a new one.
