Winter tires for 13 and 14 for VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099

Winter time requires motorists to prepare their cars for difficult weather conditions. A misconception is that in winter you can use all-season or summer tires. This type is technologically not intended for use in winter.

Many people believe that winter tires on a VAZ differ from summer tires only in the tread pattern. This is partly true, but the main difference lies not in the tread, but in the type of rubber itself. At low temperatures, rubber becomes hard and the quality of grip on the road surface decreases. The composition of winter tires is selected so that the material does not lose softness even in severe frost. This feature can explain why it is not recommended to use winter tires in summer; at positive temperatures, soft rubber will become even softer, which will complicate driving.

Often, owners consider it sufficient to install winter tires only on the drive axle, but this idea does not meet safety requirements, since the risk of skidding increases, traction forces are not balanced and there is a danger of maintaining straight-line motion when turning.

Disc sizes

At the factory, the VAZ 2109 is equipped with wheels with dimensions 175/70 R13. Unfortunately, they don't look very attractive. They need to wear rubber with a large profile. Rims with a small diameter are practically invisible behind such a tire.

To solve this problem, you should first find out which larger wheels can be installed on the VAZ 2109, because today there is a very large assortment of models on the market with sizes R14 - R15.

If such a rim is installed on a car, will its technical characteristics be maintained? Is it possible to pass inspection on such wheels?

R14 wheels can be mounted on the following models:

On all vehicles, the wheel width should not exceed 6 inches. In this case, the offset should be within 35-40 millimeters.

It is allowed to install cast products, as well as forged structures, with the above parameters. The center hole of the discs must be greater than or equal to 58.5 millimeters.

For such models, you will have to specially select tires so that after installation there is no change in the diameter of the wheel. Otherwise, when the car starts to turn, the tire may touch suspension parts, possibly touching the fender liners.

Experts advise installing tires with the following dimensions on R14 wheels:

The final option is considered more preferable.

Other settings

In addition to the basic characteristics of the tire and wheel, there are other important indicators that must be taken into account. One of them is wheel offset, which is the distance from the wheel hub to the middle of the rim.

You can also increase the car's ground clearance using spacers for shock absorbers. You can install them yourself. Then the offset can be made smaller, but its deviation from the recommended one leads to a change in the load on the hub bearing. This will result in a reduction in its service life and affect the controllability of the car.

The offset can be made less than recommended for wide rims. If the discs are narrow, then you can take more. To make the right choice, it is advisable to seek help from a specialist, from whom you will receive precise instructions on what parameters are needed. When purchasing disks, it is extremely important to accurately select the mounting dimensions for the mounting bolts and nuts (PCD). If the choice is made even with a slight error, a disc with a slight PCD deviation that is not visually noticeable can be installed on the hub. Then some bolts will fit exactly, while others will fit misaligned. Such a wheel will begin to “figure eight”, and the nuts will spontaneously unscrew.

Diameter calculation

In principle, each driver can calculate the wheel diameter independently. To do this, he must be well able to decipher the existing tire markings, for example, let’s calculate a wheel with dimensions 175/70 R13 for a nine:

  • 175 – tire width indicator (mm).
  • 70 – tread height size. Takes a percentage of the existing width. In this example: 175x0.7 = 122.5 mm.
  • R13 – disk diameter. Calculated: 13 x 25.4 = 330 millimeters.

To obtain the wheel diameter, it is necessary to add the disk diameter with the profile height multiplied by two:

330 + 122.5 x 2 = 575 mm.

If you carry out calculations for other wheels, you get:

  • 175/65 R14 – 583,
  • 185/60 R14 – 577 mm.

The last option is considered the most optimal. The tire is ten millimeters wider. The contact patch of such rubber is much larger, which means the braking distance will be reduced.

The car will be more stable and much easier to drive. The rubber will not break when turning at high speed.

However, with all the positive aspects, there are also several disadvantages. A wide tire has a hydroplaning effect when driving at high speed. There is no such effect on narrow tires.

The cabin will feel shocks from hitting potholes due to the low profile height. Recommended wheel dimensions must be indicated in the technical documentation of the vehicle.

Large disc elements

Larger wheels (15 inches) can be installed on the Samara. However, the manufacturer does not recommend doing this, so problems may occur during technical inspection.

The 185/55 R15 tire fits these wheels. Of course, you can try to install 195/50 R15. Before installation, be sure to take all measurements. It is possible that the wheel will begin to “rub”, since the width of the rubber is too wide.

The installation of a non-standard wheel rim must take into account the driving style of the car. For example, fans of fast driving can be advised to install durable and at the same time light wheels on the “nine”, since heavy ones will not allow them to develop good speed.

Car enthusiasts with little money don’t really need expensive alloy rims. To make your car look attractive, it is enough to install beautiful hubcaps, the cost of which is affordable for every motorist.

Reading time: 7 minutes

Every owner of a domestic car sooner or later thinks about this question - which wheels are best to install on a VAZ 2109. In this case, it is necessary to determine the size of the wheels and the method of their manufacture. It is possible to install stamped and light alloy products of various sizes on the machine. It is also important to know the parameters of VAZ wheels so that the kit fits perfectly.

Table of typical wheels and tires

You can easily check the confirmation of the above information in the VAZ-2109 instruction manual.

If we talk about even larger wheels (15 inches in diameter), it should be noted that their installation is also possible. The only difficulty is that the manufacturer does not recommend installing such wheels, as a result of which you may have problems at the inspection station. For R15 wheels, 185/55 and 195/50 wheels are suitable. However, the latter become almost end-to-end and there is a risk that the wide tires will touch the protection.

Wheels for cars

The VAZ 2108 and 2109 models have long become legends. Over the years, a huge number of these cars have been produced and delivered to various countries around the world. Simplicity of design and ease of maintenance made this machine one of the most popular models in the manufacturer’s line.

VAZ 2109 car

The disks on 2109 and 2108 from VAZ were installed identically. The cars had identical parameters, the only difference was the number of doors. Due to the high popularity of the car, on the country's market you can find a huge number of offers for the sale of spare parts, tires and wheels.

Some car owners prefer to install products that exceed these permissible dimensions. In this case, it is necessary to redesign the machine.

In the factory configuration, the machine is most often supplied with stamped wheels of various radii. There are some versions with castings, but they are quite rare. However, there comes a time for every motorist when it is necessary to change tires. This may occur due to wear or damage, seasonal changes, or other reasons.

In this case, there are plenty to choose from on the market. Both original stamped or light-alloy wheels and products from various other companies are presented. Some car owners even purchase used products.

Large radius alloy wheels for VAZ 2109

During the entire production of the model, there were no changes in the parameters and sizes of wheel mounts. It is possible to install them from earlier models to new ones and vice versa. Many domestic wheel manufacturers offer a special line of products for the VAZ 2109. In this case, all parameters and dimensions match perfectly. The most popular installation is for 2109 15-inch disks. This is considered the optimal solution, since this size meets the manufacturer’s requirements and does not affect the smoothness and comfort of movement.

The standard bolt pattern is 4x98. That is, to install the products, four bolts are required, which are fastened at an axial distance of 98 millimeters. This is a very popular mounting method among cars of this class. Thanks to this, car owners usually have no problems with selecting wheel rims.

If a decision has been made to replace wheels, then many different parameters and characteristics must be taken into account. The main ones are the dimensions of the width and height of the product, offset and bolt pattern. Knowing them, you can safely purchase the selected discs.

However, the following factors should be kept in mind:

  • In winter, it is advisable to install wheels with a minimum radius and width. This is done to obtain better stability in bad weather on slippery road surfaces;
  • In the warm season there are no special requirements. You can install larger rims, this will give greater controllability and stability under normal conditions.

Among tuning enthusiasts, it is popular to modify a car to install large-sized products. It is important to consider that intervention in the design of the machine should be done as carefully as possible and it is advisable to entrust this to professionals. In addition, exceeding the permissible dimensions may lead to problems with annual maintenance. Installing large wheels will greatly affect the comfort of movement.

Recommendations when choosing

When choosing a set of new stampings or light alloys, be sure to pay attention to the following points.

  • All alloy wheels must be certified and supplemented with a quality mark and X-ray inspection.
  • All discs must have a mark from the regulatory authority and a document confirming that the discs have passed quality control and compliance with current standards.
  • The product indicates the maximum permissible load that the disk can handle.
  • The name and other information about the manufacturer is quite obvious information that you can and should read on the disk.
  • Product heat number, production method, marking and date of manufacture. If not, look for a kit in another store. This is clearly a counterfeit or questionable shipment.

Storage rules

Many car owners purchase two sets of wheels, one of which is used in winter, and the other in summer. This allows you not to transfer tires from one set to another every time.

But if you leave wheels in a garage or other place for a long time, you risk losing their original quality, since the storage rules were not followed.

Storage nuances

And they are quite simple.

  • Don't just throw the kit somewhere in the corner where some space has become available.
  • Before storing, mark the wheels so you know where the front left, rear right, and so on are.
  • Store wheels exclusively in a dry, cool and dark place. There should be no chemicals, gasoline or oil in the immediate vicinity of tires. These components are capable of destroying the structure of the wheels over time, so their service life is noticeably reduced.
  • If tires are stored with rims, they should not be kept in a standing position. Hang or place horizontally. Many experts advise using wooden pallets.
  • If the rubber is stored separately, it is located vertically. Moreover, the tires should be rotated once a month so that the pressure does not deform the compound. Do not hang or stack tires on top of each other.
  • Before storing, inspect the projectors and remove any stones or stuck pebbles.
  • Carefully check the condition of the wheels before installing them for the new season.

Wheels are more than just a visual decoration for a car. Safety, reliability of the suspension, fuel consumption and a number of other parameters largely depend on their quality and correct choice.

Characteristics and parameters of wheels for a domestic car

Due to the fact that the VAZ 2109 has a common base with the models of the Fiat concern, this parameter is 4x98. However, the overhang dimensions and hub diameter should also be taken into account. If all the listed parameters match, then we can safely say that the disk is suitable.

There is a wide range of products on the market with a drilling parameter of 4x100. These products are inexpensive and high quality, and many car owners are tempted to install them. It is possible to carry out such an installation, but for this you need to purchase special eccentric bolts, which are designed for installing disks of other sizes.

Wheel parameters

The car was equipped from the factory with wheel rims of the following sizes:

  • 5J wheels on 13 ET40 with 165/70R13 tires;
  • 4.5J wheels on 13 ET40, tires - 155/80R13;
  • 5.5J wheels on 13 ET40, tires - 175/70R13;
  • 5J wheels on 14 ET40, tires - 175/65R14;
  • 5.5J wheels on 14 ET37, tires - 185/60R14;
  • 6J wheels on 14 ET35, tires - 185/60R14.

Generation 1

Sales of the “nine” started in 1987. Externally, the model was almost completely identical to the VAZ-2108, differing from it only in the number of doors. The car retains the same styling: angular body features, a relatively slight slope of the windshield, a large protruding bumper and noticeable rectangular headlights. Despite the similar design and dimensions, the “nine” and “eight” were fundamentally different cars. The width of the front doors in the VAZ-2109 was reduced by almost 250 mm. In the appearance of the model one could guess the swiftness of the lines, but the sportiness became much less.

The interior of the “nine” turned out to be extremely practical. At the same time, the developers managed to increase comfort indicators. The car now has a “low” instrument panel, which has become more convenient. The front seats received headrests, and the upper belt attachment points were height-adjustable. Upholstery with inserts and optional fabric seats added to the model's prestige. The folded rear seats made the VAZ-2109 look like a station wagon. The cabin had ventilation and heating systems.

The first modernization of the car took place in 1989. The front part of the body has been slightly refined. The entire restyling consisted of a transition to “long” front wings, replacing the “short” version. In 1990, the model received a new 1.5-liter engine (72 hp). The modernized version was called VAZ-21093. It was this modification that became the most popular. By the mid-1990s, 1.1- and 1.3-liter engines were excluded from the line of power units. The engines were combined with 5-speed gearboxes.

The next restyling of the model took place in 1995. They stopped melting the radiator grille. The last cosmetic improvement of the VAZ-2109 happened in 1997. The car has not changed again.

Wheel and tire sizes

Regardless of the modification, the “nine” could be equipped with the following types of tires and wheels:

  • wheels 5J on 13 ET40 (5 – width in inches, 13 – diameter in inches, 40 – positive offset in mm), tires – 165/70R13 (165 – tire width in mm, 70 – profile height in%, 13 – rim diameter in inches);
  • 4.5J wheels on 13 ET40, tires – 155/80R13;
  • 5.5J wheels on 13 ET40, tires – 175/70R13;
  • 5J wheels on 14 ET40, tires – 175/65R14;
  • 5.5J wheels on 14 ET37, tires – 185/60R14;
  • 6J wheels on 14 ET35, tires – 185/60R14.

Other characteristics of VAZ-2109 wheels:

  • PCD (drilling) – 4 by 98 (4 is the number of holes, 98 is the diameter of the circle on which they are located in mm);
  • fasteners – M12 by 1.25 (12 – stud diameter in mm, 1.25 – thread size);
  • diameter of the central hole – 58.5 mm;
  • tire pressure – 1.9-2 bar.

Advantages of the car:

  • good handling;
  • strong bumper;
  • affordable price and low maintenance cost.

Disadvantages of the VAZ-2109:

  • the interior is made of cheap plastic, which begins to rattle immediately after starting to move;
  • low ergonomics of the pedal assembly;
  • vulnerability of the oil filter and engine crankcase.

Wheel sizes

Some of the most popular sizes for domestic cars are R14 and R15. Installation of such products is possible without any problems, provided that the overhang, width and drilling dimensions are observed. If a decision is made to install products that differ in size, then it is necessary to alter some components or purchase a set of spacers.

If you exceed the parameters without modifying the arches, then the tires in turns will touch the slats and arches, which will lead to high wear of all components and parts of the chassis.

To avoid such problems, you should purchase rims whose sizes are guaranteed to fit all parameters. The optimal sizes of 14 and 15 inches correspond to the factory settings for handling, dynamics and smoothness.

As for large sizes, the decision to install them has its positive and negative sides, which are important to know. And the decision to purchase and replace wheels must be made by the car owner.

  • Improved car behavior on the road;
  • Improving the appearance of the car;
  • Maximum road performance, such as dynamics, handling;
  • Better absorption of road surface defects;
  • With high-profile tires installed, the wear resistance of the suspension increases;
  • Reducing the braking distance.
  • Reduced driving comfort, which is associated with the high sensitivity of the suspension to all road defects;
  • Difficulty parking and driving on roads with problematic surfaces;
  • Increased requirements for pressure control in low-profile tires;
  • Increased fuel consumption, which is associated with the increased complexity of driving the wheels;
  • High price of the kit.

How to choose stamped products

Stamped wheels are the most common for the VAZ 2109. Cars are equipped with these from the factory very often. This is due to the low cost of manufacturing such products.

They are not attractive in terms of design and have poor performance, but often car enthusiasts are attracted by their price. It is necessary to install stamped products on VAZs in compliance with the same requirements as for cast ones. Their parameters and sizes are fully consistent.

The dimensions and parameters common for the entire line of VAZ car models allow you to choose a set of wheels without any problems.

Factory non-tuned VAZ cars are standardly equipped with stamped types of wheels. These products are of fairly high quality, but the external shortcomings of these parts are much greater. Many car owners prefer to improve their car themselves, but in addition to their own considerations, they must adhere to certain rules and take into account the structural features of the car.

Despite the visual appeal and quality of the cast kits, they are designed for quiet driving, mainly on smooth roads with good asphalt surface. Only in this case can we talk about increasing security. The fact is that casting, given all its strength, has the unpleasant property of being damaged when it gets into holes and potholes at high speed, of which there are plenty on our roads. In such a situation, you will have to restore the disk using argon welding or buy a new one if the damage is significant.

Why are alloy wheels better than stamped ones?

Alloy wheels have undeniable advantages over stamped ones.

  1. High strength indicators, ensuring the safety of the car owner on poor quality roads.
  2. Lightness, increasing the maneuverability of the car when driving.
  3. The alloy for cast wheels has good resistance to corrosion, which will increase service life if used carefully.
  4. High thermal conductivity ensures heat removal from the brake pads during emergency braking.

Suitable sizes

And yet, if a car owner decides to install alloy wheels on his VAZ 2109 or 2110, he must first understand the possible size options that are acceptable for installation without changing the design of the car. For VAZ 2109 and 2110 tires with a diameter of 14 inches (R14), wheels with a width of 6 inches and an offset of 35-40 cm are most suitable, but wheels with a size of 265 65 r17 are not suitable. Similar models are marked J6.0 ET 35-40, respectively. You can install wheels with a difference of 1 inch to one side or the other from the standard, that is, R13 and R15 are also suitable options. With a strong difference, one can note such an unpleasant effect as friction of the wheel on the wheel arches and fender liners on sharp turns, as well as wear and tear on the car's running parts.

Tire pressure

Car enthusiasts often ask the question: how long to pump tires and is it worth doing it for winter tires? In winter conditions, the pressure measured by the pressure gauge may be lower than it actually is. For example, an indicator of 1.7 atmospheres at a temperature of -8 degrees can be recorded by the device as 1.6 at a temperature of -20 degrees. A decrease in temperature causes a decrease in pressure.

Both low and high pressure create an incorrect contact patch, which reduces traction, and in winter this is especially fraught.

The advantages of low-profile tires on the VAZ 2109 and VAZ 2110

When installing large-diameter wheels, it is advisable to combine them with low-profile tires to minimize the negative consequences. In addition, such wheels will look stylish and rich, which in itself will significantly improve the appearance of a not-so-fashionable nine or ten. After all, low-profile tires in the classic version are installed only on sports car models. Regardless of the improved appearance, a car with such tires acquires other positive qualities:

  • increasing the vehicle's traction with the road surface;
  • increasing vehicle agility and response, especially when braking and cornering.

All this certainly speaks in favor of using such tires. However, we must remember that initially their production was carried out specifically for racing cars that competed on a perfectly smooth road surface of the track. Therefore, a car owner with low-profile tires will feel best on a high-quality road. In this case, you can accelerate the speed to 250 km/h - this is the nominal value that low-profile wheels are designed for.

Disadvantages of low profile tires

The main significant disadvantage of such rubber when installed on VAZ 2109 and 2110 is its low service life when used on defective road surfaces.

You can also note a decrease in shock absorption characteristics due to the fact that the decrease in profile reduces the amount of air in the wheel chamber. This implies a strong increase in the sensitivity of all road imperfections - any hole will be felt by those sitting in the car with greater force. This can already be considered a serious drawback, since the quality of domestic roads does not allow driving quickly and carefully. Moreover, if you fall into a large hole, you can damage the wheel rim to such an extent that you will have to get home with the help of a tow truck. The only thing that needs to be taken into account when choosing low-profile tires is the manufacturer’s characteristics, depending on which you can choose the best option among many models.

It is impossible to say unequivocally which wheels are best for Zhiguli 9 and 10. In this case, each car owner acts at his own discretion, depending on the roads on which he drives, the level of activity and taking into account the main characteristics of a particular model of a set of wheels. Regarding the installation of low-profile tires on a VAZ, the same can be said. All the pros and cons of using this type of tire fall on the shoulders of the motorist who wants to improve his car.

Kinds

Analyzing the wheel rim market, the entire range can be divided into three types:

  • Stamped steel;
  • Light alloy cast;
  • Light alloy forged.

Many cars, including the VAZ 2109, were equipped with stamped wheels from the factory. Outwardly, they are completely unattractive, and over time they lose their external characteristics. Let's be honest, this is a relic of the past.

But at the same time, steel stampings have their advantages, due to which this type of disc is still produced and is in impressive demand among consumers:

  • Affordable price. These are the cheapest options available today;
  • High strength indicators. Considering the quality of our roads, many people think primarily about quality, safety, and not external data;
  • Reliability. They do not have to be changed almost every season, which results in impressive savings;
  • With strong impacts, the stampings do not break or crack. They crumple as much as possible, which opens up opportunities for recovery and restoration;
  • Easy to remove and change without outside help.

But let's be completely honest. With all their positive qualities, the disgusting appearance forces car owners to abandon reliability and durability in favor of image and external attractiveness. Moreover, you should not think that light-alloy options are absolutely fragile and break only from one type of damage.

Light alloy

If we talk about alloy wheels, they are made, as you may have guessed, from special light alloys.

A total of three types of alloys are used.

Alloy typePeculiarities
TitaniumAn excellent choice in all respects except cost. These are the most expensive alloy wheels, which, nevertheless, last a long time, are reliable, and look simply excellent.
AluminumMany people put aluminum alloy first, taking into account external characteristics, strength indicators and availability. An important advantage of aluminum is that it is not susceptible to corrosion. With proper use, aluminum alloy lasts a long time and maintains the excellent appearance of the car.
MagnesiumIn the ranking among three light alloys it occupies the third place of honor. If you have the choice of titanium or aluminum, choose them. But this does not mean that magnesium alloys should be avoided.

When choosing alloy wheel sets, be sure to compare their strengths and weaknesses. Appearance is far from the only criterion that you need to pay attention to when purchasing.

Advantages and disadvantages of light alloy

Compared to steel wheels, choosing light alloy options provides car owners with a fairly extensive list of advantages. But it is also important to know about the disadvantages.

AdvantagesFlaws
  • Attractive, modern appearance, which allows you to distinguish the wheels from competitors and monotonous stamped products;
  • Reduces the weight of the unsprung part;
  • Allows you to implement original design ideas;
  • Effectively cools the brake assembly;
  • During manufacturing, maximum precision is observed, which has a positive effect on balancing and tire wear;
  • During production they are coated with anti-corrosion compounds, which allows you not to be afraid of driving even on snowy roads strewn with salt or other reagents
  • The material is quite fragile, therefore, with strong impacts, cracks appear or the disc breaks completely;
  • It is impossible to repair light alloy products, unlike stamped steel ones;
  • You can damage a disk in the simplest situation, for example, when parking a car;
  • When choosing products from dubious manufacturers, there is a high probability of getting a manufacturing defect;
  • The discs do not absorb impacts, which causes the car’s suspension to suffer more; it is subject to additional loads

In order to preserve the integrity of your beautiful, but not the most reliable, alloy wheels for a longer time, it is recommended to adhere to a few simple rules for their operation.
