How to remove the caliper VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099

The caliper (front wheel brake mechanism) will have to be removed when replacing its brake cylinder, replacing damaged parts, replacing the front wheel hub bearing, or painting.

Let's look at two ways to remove the caliper: “fast” and “slow”.

Required Tools

— Open-end wrenches for “13”, “14”, “15”, “17”

Preparatory work

— We hang and remove the front wheel of the car

— We clean the front wheel brake mechanism from contamination

We remove the caliper (front wheel brake mechanism) VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099

"Quick" way to remove the caliper

If you plan to disconnect the brake hose from the caliper, before removing it, use an open-end wrench to “14” (in some cases to “15”) to loosen the tightening of the hose tip on the brake cylinder. Place a container under the caliper to collect the brake fluid.

— Through the inspection hole of the caliper, use a slotted screwdriver to slightly move the brake pads apart (so that they move away from the brake disc)
— Using a socket wrench set to “17”, unscrew the two bolts securing the caliper to the steering knuckle

It is better to access the lower bolt from below, and the upper one from above.

— Remove the caliper by sliding it up the brake disc

If the brake disc does not have much wear, it is not difficult to move it.

— Holding the tip of the brake hose with a key at “14”, rotate the caliper until the tip is completely turned out

If it is necessary to completely separate the caliper.

"Slow" method of removing the caliper

— Disconnect the floating caliper bracket

Using a screwdriver, bend the edges of the locking plates of the guide pin bolts. Holding the guide pin with an open-end wrench set to “17”, use a wrench set to “13” to unscrew the lower bolt. We lift up the floating bracket by prying it with a screwdriver. We remove the brake pads. We lower the bracket. Similarly to the lower one, unscrew the upper bolt and remove the bracket along with the brake cylinder. We remove the guide pins from the holes in the fixed bracket.

Unscrew the bolts securing the guide pins

— Disconnect the brake hose

The brake hose will have to be disconnected when the caliper is completely removed. In another case, for example, when replacing a wheel bearing, the brake hose is not disconnected, but the removed caliper is moved to the side and suspended on a wire. The hose tip is turned off with an open-end wrench to “14”. You can hold the tip with a key and rotate the brake cylinder until the hose tip is completely unscrewed from it. There is a copper O-ring underneath. We bend the brake hose and secure it with wire so that the brake fluid does not leak out.

— Disconnect the fixed caliper bracket

Using a 17" socket wrench, unscrew the two bolts securing the fixed bracket to the steering knuckle. Remove the fixed bracket.

We unscrew the two bolts securing the fixed guide of the caliper pads to the steering knuckle

— Disconnect the brake (wheel) cylinder

It is better not to remove the brake cylinder unless necessary. We clamp the floating caliper bracket in a vice and with a 10-point socket, unscrew the two screws securing the brake cylinder and separate it from the bracket.

That's it, the VAZ 2108, 2109, 21099 caliper is completely removed and disassembled.

We assemble and install the caliper in the reverse order. The tightening torques of the fixed bracket mounting bolts are 29-36 N.m, the guide pin bolts are 31-38 N.m, the brake cylinder mounting screws are 115-150 N.m.

Replacing the front brake cylinder

The main malfunction of the front brake cylinders on cars such as VAZ 2109-2108 is either jamming or leakage of brake fluid. In both cases, you should not expect normal operation of the braking system.

  • If the cylinder does not return to its original position when the brake pedal is released, the pads may become stuck, or be constantly pressed, which can cause wear to occur too quickly. Usually in such cases the brakes and even the wheel rims become very hot.
  • If it begins to leak fluid, then naturally the braking efficiency drops, since normal pressure is not created in the system.

Usually, only the cylinder itself is replaced, although stores sell assembled calipers, even with pads. If desired, you can buy and install the mechanism assembled. To replace the front brake cylinder on a VAZ 2109-2108 you will need the following tool:

  • Socket head 13
  • Ratchet handle
  • Open-end wrench or socket wrench 13
  • Hexagon 10
  • Special split wrench for loosening brake pipes and hoses

First, we tear off the bolts of the front wheel, after which we lift the car with a jack and finally remove the wheel. Then unscrew the two hex bolts that secure the cylinder to the caliper:

And the top cover-bracket is now removed, and at the same time we take out the pads:

Next, you need to unscrew the brake hose, as shown in the photo below:

If it starts to rotate together with the fitting, you can unscrew it later, after removing the cylinder - it will be more convenient. Now you need to unscrew the two bolts to the caliper guide bracket:

Now you can remove the front wheel brake cylinder without any problems, since nothing else holds it. If the hose did not unscrew earlier, now you can safely unscrew it together with the cylinder:

If a replacement is required, then a new part for a VAZ 2109-2108 can be purchased for about 450 rubles, although stores most often only have assembled calipers at a price of 1,600 rubles. The installation will take place in the reverse order, after which you will need to bleed the brake system.

To remove brake discs from a VAZ 2109, set the car to the parking brake, lift and place the front part of the car on supports and remove the wheels.

Using a screwdriver, bend the antennae of the lock washers of the two bolts securing the guide pins and unscrew the lower bolt securing the guide pin, holding it with a hexagon wrench

Remove the caliper with the wheel cylinder from the base and lift the caliper up and in the same way unscrew the upper mounting bolt

Hang the caliper with the wheel cylinder on a wire to the front suspension spring. At the same time, make sure that the brake hose is not twisted or too tight, then remove the brake pads of the VAZ 2109. At the same time, mark the pads to install them in their original places

Unscrew the two alignment pins and remove the brake disc. Installing the front discs of the VAZ 2109 is carried out in the reverse order of removal; before the trip, be sure to bleed the brake system by pressing the brake pedal 3-5 times so that the pistons of the VAZ 2109 calipers are in working condition.

Design

Replacing the front brake cylinder on a VAZ 2109

The front cylinder, which helps brake the car, consists of the following elements:

  • Brake fluid reservoir. Actually, it is thanks to it that braking is carried out. And thanks to a special sensor, the liquid level is regulated.

Note: If this sensor fails, the cylinder will also stop working. Due to the increase in pressure in it, it will break.

Note: It also protects the brake fluid. That is, it helps prevent it from leaking. If a small hole appears in it, it will leak out, causing the cylinder to stop functioning normally.

  • Return springs. When the driver presses the brake, the pistons change their position. It is these springs that allow them to return to their place.

  • Sealing cuffs. With their help, the pressure in the tank does not change, but remains optimal for the car.
  • Pistons.
  • Differential pressure sensor.

Note: It allows the driver to monitor whether the cylinder has failed.

Principle of operation

Replacing the front brake cylinders of a VAZ 2109

The wheel hub will rotate on an axle that is attached to the bridge beam on two bearings. The brake disc is attached to it. And to the disk there is a wheel. When the car moves, the wheel rotates, as does the brake disc. Let's look at how a car is braked:

  • The pads are attached to the brake disc. If you clamp them, then due to the friction force between the pad and the disk, the rotation speed of the second decreases.
  • Pistons installed in the brake cylinders press the pads against the disc.

Note: As brake fluid enters the cylinder, the pistons force the brake pads against the brake rotor. The disk rotation speed decreases.

  • By adding a pipeline to the cylinder, you get a brake block. It consists of a cylinder, piston, rod and brake pedal.

Note: This fluid pressure went to the wheel brake cylinder. Here it presses on the brake pistons. They press the pads, which are pressed against the disc.

  • The wheel itself will also reduce the rotation speed. This principle is used to operate the brakes on each wheel.

Note: When the pads rub against the disc, they wear out due to friction. Therefore, they need to be changed periodically. The driver himself can replace them. To do this you just need to remove the wheel.

  • Another subtlety: a reservoir is installed above the main brake cylinder to store brake fluid. If it leaks, the driver must control the amount of it so as not to be left without brakes.
  • After the car has been stopped, the driver stops pressing the pedal. As a result of this, the pistons return to their original positions, which is carried out thanks to return springs.

Repair

Replacing the front brake cylinder of a VAZ 2109

In some cases, the front cylinder fails. Therefore, the right decision would be to replace it. However, you can do it differently. If you want to save money, you can try to repair it yourself.

Note: The front cylinder is usually inexpensive, so you won't save much money.

If you still want to carry out repairs, you need to do the following:

  • Raise the car on a jack.
  • Remove the wheel. It cannot be removed unless all the nuts are unscrewed. There are few of them and they are very easy to remove. The 19 key will help in this matter.

Note: to make it safer to work with the car in the future, you can make an additional support. A stump or other object the height of a wheel is suitable for this. It is desirable that this item be stable. After this, the car can be completely lowered from the jack.

  • Then you need to remove the brake disc. You must act very carefully so as not to harm him. It is better to remove it with a crowbar. Pull the disc toward you with slow movements. At the same time, you need to try not to pull it out.

Replacing the front brake cylinder of a VAZ 2109

  • Unscrew all nuts holding the drum.
  • Remove the brake cylinder.
  • Its repair consists of replacing the cuff and boot. They must be thoroughly lubricated with brake fluid and then installed in place.

Note: The cylinder should also be lubricated to prevent it from rusting. However, later it will be more difficult to install it in place, as it will slide.

Note: To install it easily, you need to press it lightly.

  • It is tightened with a 10mm wrench. After this, you should take a flat-head screwdriver and place the cylinder straight.
  • Repeat all steps in reverse order.
