Why do LADA owners care about the frequency of replacing the timing belt (gas distribution mechanism) on their cars? Mainly due to the consequences of a broken belt, in some cases the valve bends, which ends in expensive repairs. Let's figure out at what mileage the manufacturer recommends changing the timing belt and rollers, as well as what its actual service life is.
General information timing belt
In any car, the gas distribution mechanism allows for timely intake and release of the working mixture and exhaust gases, respectively. This mechanism includes a camshaft, as well as various valve drive parts, like the valves themselves with springs, as well as guide-type bushings.
If we talk about the timing belt, then it is a special element that works as a connecting link. Thanks to it, synchronous operation of the camshaft and crankshaft is ensured.
Finding such a belt is not at all difficult. All you have to do is open the hood, after which the belt will appear to your eyes. True, this “special unit” will be protected by a special casing, which should prevent the entry of dirt and protect it from other mechanical influences.
Externally, the timing belt has a toothed inner surface and a rubber base. Unlike other types of belts, it spans multiple pulleys at once.

In addition to the two named shafts, the belt combines several more units, such as a water pump (pump) and so on.
If the rollers or pump are damaged, this suggests an increased rate of belt wear, which reduces its service life many times over.
How to replace it yourself?
You can replace the strap on an 8 or 16 valve Lada Granta in a garage or at a service station. To avoid mistakes and do everything correctly yourself, follow the steps indicated in the instructions.
Required Tools
Before you begin the task, prepare the following:
- a set of wrenches, you will need tools for 10 and 17;
- a special tool for tensioning the roller, the device can be bought at a car store;
- jack;
- a set of star keys;
- forceps.
The channel Dmitry Berbraer provided a video showing the consequences of a broken timing belt.
Step-by-step instruction
How to install and properly tension the product:
- Drive the car into the garage, open the hood and use a wrench to loosen the bolt securing the battery terminal. The contact is disconnected.
- Remove the generator set drive belt. To replace the timing belt, you will need to provide access to aggregate components and mechanisms. Remove the front right wheel. Loosen the bolts on the wheel with a wheel wrench, unscrew them, and then remove the wheel by placing the front of the car on a jack.
- Unscrew the bolts securing the upper timing belt casing. The plastic cover is used as protection, remove it. After this, set the first piston of the car's power unit to the top dead center position.
- The next step is to adjust the tensioner pulley nut. Correct adjustment of this element ensures a long service life of the strap. To dismantle the drive belt, unscrew the roller nut with a wrench; this will loosen the product. After completing the task, you can start withdrawing. It will not be possible to dismantle the belt by cutting it without unscrewing the screws. In any case, the rollers will have to be unscrewed in order to install a new strap in the future.
- Unscrew the main screw of the generator pulley using a wrench. When difficulties arise during the dismantling process and the bolt does not come out of the shaft, remove the plug located in the clutch housing of the machine. If you have a mounting spatula, then you need to use it to secure the flywheel teeth. If necessary, you can use a long screwdriver. This will prevent the generator set pulley screw from turning because the crankshaft is secured with a tool.
- Remove the generator shaft. This procedure is performed after the shoulder blade is removed. When the pulley is removed, it should be set aside on a clean surface. Make sure that no dirt sticks to it, otherwise it may cause jamming.
- The next step will be to dismantle the lower part of the gas distribution mechanism drive. To do this, you need to unscrew the three fixing screws. Place the drive aside.
- Then the belt is removed - first from the camshaft, and then from the crankshaft. When dismantling, evaluate the condition of the roller. If it is worn out or there is a large gap in the mechanism, it must be replaced. Experts recommend doing this every time you change the belt. During further installation, the belt should be pulled first onto the crankshaft and then onto the camshaft pulley. It is important to maintain the tension force. If the belt is too tight, it will wear out quickly, just as if it is loose. The procedure for assembling parts is carried out in reverse order.
Technical regulations of the AvtoVAZ plant for belt replacement
Cars of the Lada Granta family are equipped, as we have already said, with various engine modifications. Some of them do not have the problem that when the timing belt breaks, the valves bend, while others have a similar feature.
Only the 11183-50 engine does not bend the valve if the timing belt breaks; this engine is installed on the Lada Granta in the standard configuration. Read more about in which engines, when the timing belt breaks, the valves tear in this material.
To eliminate the occurrence of an emergency situation, the manufacturer recommends changing the belt once every seventy-five thousand kilometers . But you will have to monitor its condition more often - during each maintenance, that is, after 15 thousand kilometers. This statement is true for both 8-valve and 16-valve engines. Even though the most common Lada Granta engine, model 21116, is equipped with an imported cylinder head, it will also have to undergo expensive repairs as a result of a broken belt!
Naturally, the manufacturer does not recommend replacing the belt yourself, as well as checking it. If you try to do all the work yourself, there is a high probability that you will be denied subsequent warranty service. It is recommended to change only the filter yourself (replacing the cabin filter, replacing the air filter, replacing the fuel filter).
Reviews
I changed the belt at 100 thousand km, leaving the old rollers. As a result, 130 thousand km. The bearings fell apart and the belt broke.
The timing belt was changed at 80 thousand km, the condition was acceptable. But I drive on harsh roads and, in order to avoid problems with valves, etc., I decided to change them in advance. The manufacturer's regulations are 120 thousand km.
After buying the car, the first factory belt was changed after 61 thousand km, it was changed by the officials. I asked them to show me the old belt and didn't notice any wear on it at all.
Advice from Lada Granta owners
Most Lada Granta owners, especially owners of 16-valve engines (repairs are much more expensive than an 8-valve equivalent), are advised not to wait until the required 75 thousand kilometers. The fact is that low-quality components can lead to wear and tear starting after 20 thousand kilometers.
Most owners use well-proven Gates products when replacing. But they like to fake this brand, so try to buy from time-tested suppliers!

A couple of tips on replacing the timing belt
If you decide to replace the belt yourself, then you should consider some recommendations.
For example, after installing the belt, you will also need to tension it correctly. This is done using a special key. Some will note that you can get by with improvised means, but then no one guarantees the result.
The force, which is typical for turning the belt 90 degrees between the crankshaft and camshaft pulleys, should not be more than 20 Nm, but it should not be allowed to be below 15 Nm. All other indicators will tell you that the belt tension was incorrect and further adjustment will be required.
Tips on how to increase resource
- Warm up the engine before driving in cold weather.
- When replacing, also change the rollers and pump, following the manufacturers' recommendations.
- Buy spare parts from trusted brands, check whether you have purchased a counterfeit.
While writing the article, I was able to find statistics on the mileage at which the belt broke on cars. The statistics are as follows:
Of course, the data is difficult to analyze, since neither the car brands nor the operating conditions are known. In general, we can conclude: check whether the timing belt on your car has reached the end of its life, replace it in proven places and do not skimp on spare parts.
Signs of belt wear
As we have already noted, it is necessary to regularly monitor the condition of the timing belt.
This will allow you to notice its damage even before it completely fails, damaging engine parts.
- The first sign will be significant wear and tear on the material. If this is the case, then you run the risk of slipping or breaking if there is a significant load on the car, as well as with high air humidity.
- It follows that wear occurs, as a rule, when the position of the tension roller and pulley deviates, as well as when the bearing temperature is high or its unsatisfactory operation. You can notice this by the fact that the material will be worn out and fabric debris will stick out from it.
- The third sign suggests the presence of cracks or peeling. The more such damage, the higher the chance that the belt will break very soon.
- Problems are also typical for situations where the back surface of the belt has a low elasticity index and significant hardness. This will also give away the characteristic shine of the belt. This will not allow it to make good contact with the pulley.
- During use, the belt may lengthen. If this parameter has become too large, then it is worth replacing the belt with a new one, especially since its elastic abilities will be significantly reduced.
- And, of course, if the belt position deviates from the specified one, this will indicate a situation where the tension roller components may fail.
The timing belt was removed for inspection and still works, but the owner decided to replace it
In this case the belt is still in good condition
After how long to change the timing belt on Grant
“Hello, Sergiy. I have a VAZ 2110, with a 16-valve engine. Recently they were afraid that when the timing belt breaks, the valve may bend, then they will think about repairing a decent amount. I have a question for you. How long does it take to change a timing belt? Alexander.
The crown is really interesting. Let's think about this together.
We partially discussed this issue in the article. timing belt or chain. Interesting read. But today we will focus on timing.
A little theory. The timing belt (or timing belt), which is an integral part of the crankshaft and camshaft linkage (16 engine valve shafts). Rotating the crankshaft means the belt rotates the camshaft, which opens or closes the valve in a specific sequence. This ensures the injection of fuel or exhaust gases. This is a dry connection between the crankshaft and camshaft chain. That is, it is located outside the engine (usually covered by a casing) and is not lubricated by engine oil, unlike the circuit inside the engine, and is lubricated by engine oil. This is a theory.
Here's a short video that shows how it works.
As it turns out, impact forces act on the belt and it wears out. Therefore, this needs to be changed from time to time. Failure to do so may result in serious problems. The belt will simply break, the engine will become unbalanced, and there is a chance of bending the valve. Although modern engines are protected from this, they do have holes in the engine pistons.
Consequences of a broken timing belt
4 valves bent after timing belt broke
As we have already said, only one engine should not have significant problems after a timing belt break - 11183-50 . But for other models, significant breakdowns are possible, which will result in significant financial investments! On our website, a battle has broken out among Grant drivers about which engine is better: 8 or 16 valves, we are also interested in your opinion.
The fact is that when the belt breaks, the camshaft stops in the position in which it was at that moment. But the crankshaft continues to move. As a result, the pistons hit the valves, which were currently open, with great force. The valves are bent from this impact, and in rare cases the piston may even be punctured, although this is very rare. This situation is popularly called the “fist of friendship”!

It is for this reason that experts recommend replacing the timing belt even earlier than indicated by the car or belt manufacturer.
conclusions
Now you know how long to change the timing belt. Undoubtedly, a broken LADA Granta belt is a source of unprecedented problems. This circumstance does not mean that you need to remain inactive. Below are a few recommendations whose goal is to minimize this risk.
1. Be very careful when checking the belt for wear. This action is recommended to be carried out after 10-15 thousand km.
2. Do not neglect checking the condition of the seals. The defect manifests itself in the form of characteristic spots under the bottom of the car.
3. The flashing of the lamp that registers the oil pressure in the LADA Granta engine may indicate a problem. If this fact manifests itself, we urgently turn off the engine and take measures to find the source of the breakdown.
4. Use only original spare parts, although no one has canceled the procedure for monitoring their condition.
Dear GrantaVody. Tell me who has encountered...
My friend Grant has 1.6 - 8kl. (norm). Mileage 70,000. The timing belt broke - the valves were bent... Question. Since the grant itself, how long is it better to change the timing belt? What is the approximate cost of repairs? in case the belt has already broken and the valves are bent, and the cost of the belt itself.
I read somewhere on the Internet that at 1.6 - 8kl - if the timing belt breaks - the valves do not bend.

Reassembling the mechanism
The assembly process is carried out in reverse order, only at the very beginning you need to make sure that the marks set earlier are in place. Then a new tension roller is installed and a new timing belt is put on the gears, starting from the bottom, from the crankshaft. Holding the belt in a slight tension with your hand, put it on the camshaft gear so that all the teeth match, and then tighten it with a tension roller.
There are 2 holes in its body into which you can insert a special fork or pliers and use them to tighten it. After this, tighten the roller bolt with medium force. In order to ensure correct installation and tension of the belt, you need to make a couple of full revolutions of the crankshaft, preferably not with the starter, but with the help of a key. Then align the marks and check again the position of the marks in the flywheel inspection window.
There is one caveat: the mark on the camshaft gear may deviate a couple of mm in one direction or another from the mark on the body, this is quite acceptable. If the belt is installed incorrectly, the discrepancy will be 1 cm, this is immediately noticeable. You need to loosen its tension again and move the belt one tooth to the right or left, and then repeat the operation. Once the new belt has been successfully installed and tensioned, the assembly can be reassembled.
When installing the generator drive belt, remember that the VAZ 2190 does not have a tensioning mechanism. Therefore, the body of the unit is moved as close as possible to the cylinder block, the belt is put on its pulley completely, and partially on the crankshaft, after which it will need to be turned half a turn for the consumable to fall into place. Further assembly is not a problem, after which you can start the motor. The operation for such a replacement for a Lada Granta engine with 16 valves is distinguished by the following details.
- There are two camshafts, the marks will need to be aligned, and then checked on two gears.
- You need to change 2 rollers: tension and bypass.
- The new belt will need to be carefully put on the two upper gears, passing it past the deflection roller, the process is somewhat more painstaking.
When performing replacement work, it is recommended to pay attention to the cleanliness inside the timing mechanism space. As a rule, dust, dirt, products from the old belt in the form of black powder, and so on accumulate there. It is a good idea to thoroughly wipe the inside of the engine housing, gears and guard.
The whole procedure is quite simple. Knowing how long it takes to change the consumables of the timing mechanism and having a minimum set of devices, it is quite possible for anyone to do it on their own.
The process of replacing the fuel filter on a Lada Granta List of maintenance works 2 and their cost for a Lada Granta car
All the latest models of front-wheel drive cars produced by the car plant located in Tolyatti have a timing belt in the gas distribution mechanism. Lada Granta fully applies to these models.
The machine is equipped with several modifications of engines, which can have 8 or 16 valves in the cylinder head. Many owners service and repair this model themselves, so it will be useful for them to learn how to change the timing belt on a Lada Granta with 8 valves.
Lada Granta engines with 8 valves in the cylinder head are indexed 11183 and 11186. The first of them began to be produced in 2004, the second later, namely in 2011. The power of the “83” unit is 82 horses, with 87 hp for the “86” modification. Motor 11186 is an improved engine of the “83” model. It uses a lightweight connecting rod and piston group. It was possible to achieve a reduction in the mass of the piston group by almost 30%. The cylinder head is subjected to specific heat treatment, which increases its strength and wear resistance.
The cooling system of the power unit also received some changes. The skirts of lightweight pistons are coated with graphite lubricant, this avoids the appearance of scuffing on the cylinders of a cold engine. The compression ratio of the “86” engine became 10.5 versus 9.6 for the “83” modification. The cylinder head gasket of the new engine is now thinner, it is 0.43 mm versus 1.2 on the old model. The diameter of the intake valves was increased, which improved the filling of the cylinders with the air-fuel mixture.
Does the valve bend?
Unfortunately, this problem exists for the Lada Grant. It appeared from the moment the production of the first cars with front-wheel drive, the VAZ 2108, began. Subsequently, the working volume of the power unit of this model was increased, it became equal to 1.5 liters. The engine index became 21083, in which the pistons have a recess in the head. This made it possible to prevent the pistons from meeting the valves if the timing belt in the timing drive breaks or is installed incorrectly. This particular power unit was taken as the basis for the engine for the Granta, so there were no valve bends.
Upgrading this engine to model 11186 involves installing lightweight parts of the connecting rod and piston group. The pistons have become shorter in height, which does not allow making recesses in the head to prevent them from meeting the valve. Therefore, a toothed belt break is always accompanied by damage to the valves on an 8-valve Grant, sometimes to connecting rods and pistons. This problem accompanies all subsequent modifications of engines for the Lada Grant.
