How to change the cabin filter on a Peugeot 308 with your own hands

Owners of Peugeot 308 hatchbacks do not always change the ventilation system filter in a timely manner - although the level of comfort inside the cabin largely depends on it. With the help of filter elements, the air is cleaned of small particles, dust and pollen, and sometimes also of unpleasant odors and gases. And the absence or contamination of this consumable material negatively affects not only the health of the driver and passengers, but also the safety of the entire vehicle. Therefore, replacing the cabin filter of a Peugeot 308 is a type of work that any car owner has to periodically perform.

Where is the SF on the Peugeot 308?

In the Peugeot 308, the cabin filter is located under the glove box. However, you need to get to it not from the interior, but from the hood. To get to it, you need to open it and free access to the place where it is installed.

Criteria for determining the quality of gas stations

All data in this article is based on specific fuel quality tests. We used two options: we sent samples to the laboratory and tested them at home. Both methods are available to each of you. Please note that documents received from experts may prove non-compliance with the standard, which may be a reason for going to court at the gas station where low-quality gasoline was purchased. Home research is not proof - it is useful so that you yourself know about bad fuel and do not turn to unscrupulous gas stations.

Environmental class

To check the fuel for environmental friendliness, first of all you need to look at the presence of a Euro-5 certificate - it is given only for compliance with the standard of eco-purity of the petroleum product. Another indicator of quality are various awards such as the “Ecological Label”. Both, for example, are present in gasoline at Lukoil gas stations.

When choosing a gas station, pay attention to the environmental class of the fuel sold. Preference should be given to No. 4

If the class is not indicated at all at the gas station, it is not worth the risk (probably, class 1 or 2 gasoline is added there, which are considered “dirty” and are not able to pass certification under the Euro protocol).

The environmental friendliness of gasoline can be checked using a laboratory method. Experts identify the amount of sulfur, methanol and hydroxyl radicals. Large networks do not abuse these substances. But small regional gas stations, for the most part, fail the test for the environmental friendliness of additives - for example, at the Primoil gas station in AI-92, 13.3 microns/kg of sulfur was found instead of the required 10 microns/kg; at the Lesozavodsk gas station this substance is generally 27.1 microns/kg.

Octane number

When choosing gasoline, you should be guided not by the price, but by the recommendations of your car manufacturer. When it allows different octane numbers, pour any type of fuel into the tank. If not, only the appropriate one. In all the gas stations we examined, no deception was found with the indication of the octane number - it exactly corresponds to the prescribed index on the column. This was confirmed by documents received from the laboratories where we submitted samples (you cannot check it yourself at home).

Quality of service

This is the simplest parameter for assessing the performance of any gas station - it is obvious to every client. It is enough to come to a gas station and look at the behavior of the employees - how polite, responsive (ready to help), respect consumer rights (give receipts, show documents for goods upon request, etc.). The serviceability of the equipment and the absence of delays at the cash register are also taken into account. Comfort and appearance of gas stations are also important: ease of entry/exit, cleanliness, sufficient lighting, etc.

Price policy

The cost at gas stations must be looked at for a specific region. For example, at the capital’s Trassa and Tatneft gas stations, the pricing policy is democratic in order to lure customers away from competitors. But in remote regions, the price, on the contrary, will seem a little too high, as it is outbid by small private owners. We cannot analyze all areas, we will give only a couple of examples:

Correspondence between the paid and actual volume of fuel

Underfilling is a serious problem for both chain gas stations and small private owners. There are two ways to determine that an insufficient amount of fuel has been filled into the car tank. You can fill up your car's full tank right at the gas station. If, with a capacity of 50 liters, the refueling meter shows, for example, 65 liters, then the deception is obvious.

The second way to check is to fill several canisters of the same volume at once. The fact is that when filling one tank, underfilling may not appear, since it can be “set”, for example, to add 330 ml for every 10 liters of fuel. If you fill two identical containers equally, then such a violation will be easily detected.

How do you know when the cabin filter needs to be replaced?

The time to replace the filter can be determined based on regulations. It is believed that it is enough to do this once a year. You can base this on the number of kilometers traveled. If the mileage has increased by 20-30 thousand kilometers since the last replacement, then the time has come for replacement.

If the vehicle is used in difficult conditions, then these standards can be halved.

If the filter is faulty. For a driver who spends a significant part of his time in the cabin, this can lead not only to discomfort, but also to harm his health.

Some drivers determine the need for replacement using the following signs, which indicate that it has already exhausted its service life:

  1. There are clearly foreign odors in the cabin for no apparent reason.
  2. Windows often fog up during the warm season.
  3. The car's control panel and the inside of the windshield constantly become dirty.
  4. In summer the cabin is constantly hot and stuffy, and in winter it is cold.

If at least one of these signs can be observed, the cabin air filter must be replaced as soon as possible.

What do famous people of Russia and Karelia think?

Vasily Smerechuk, head of the North-West Interregional Territorial Administration of the Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology:

– Before July 7, we will have concluded an agreement with the winner to conduct tests, and after July 7, all those organizations that were inspected by the prosecutor’s office together with our inspectors and for which, based on the results of laboratory tests, there are suspicions that they are selling fuel that does not meet the standards, will be re-verified with testing in an accredited laboratory. If confirmed, the subjects will be held accountable.

Alexander Kotov, Chairman of the Interregional Trade Union of Professional Drivers:

– Russian fuel? It doesn't meet any standards! It’s best to go to gas stations near the refinery, but if you go a little further, you run the risk of buying a surrogate. Do you know why our drivers buy American trucks? They have engines under the hood at the front. If the diesel fuel is frozen, then while you are repairing the engine, you can run into the cabin to warm up. But in KamAZ and MAZ vehicles the cabin rises, and in the cold you have to freeze.

Evgeny Arkusha, President of the Moscow Fuel Association:

– Nobody knows how many surrogates there are in the country, because there is no control. And if there is no control, there are no statistics. Computers in modern engines break down if low-quality fuel is added. But an old engine will break down in the same way if you give it “clean” gasoline. Why? Because sulfur has lubricating properties.

Denis Manturov, head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade:

– Regular scheduled inspections are carried out, and not only at gas stations, this also applies to oil refineries and oil depots. Last year, inspections were carried out on one thousand objects, and orders were issued on 300, providing for administrative fines. There are fewer complaints about oil refineries - they are carrying out full-scale modernization and work here is carried out as planned within the framework of quadripartite agreements.

Alexey Yablokov, corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, president of the Center for Environmental Policy of Russia:

– Over the past 12 years, the number of cars has increased 4-5 times, many of them are of very poor quality, the gasoline is disgusting. Up to 40% of gasoline is adulterated - low grade gasoline is diluted with all sorts of rubbish. The ecological state of the country is making a terrible contribution to the process of reducing average life expectancy in Russia. In the United States, the population has stabilized and is growing slightly, but in Russia it is decreasing annually by 1 million - 1 million 200 thousand people. According to my calculations, 250-350 thousand people could still live, but they die for reasons related to the unfavorable environmental situation.

Dmitry Alexandrov, investment analyst:

– Oil workers have no great incentive to worry about the quality of gasoline. Firstly, selling crude oil is easier and more familiar to them. Secondly, the construction of a refinery requires several billion dollars, and it will pay off only in 7-10 years. This is too far into the future for our country. And finally, the country still does not have tax incentives to produce high-quality gasoline. I don’t think that anything will change radically any time soon given the current extremely slow pace of modernization and refinery construction. A lot of good gasoline will appear in 10 years, not earlier.

Selecting a new filter element

If the filter is changed on time, it will protect the air in the car from insects, soot, dust, and exhaust gases. Several types of filters are offered for sale:

  1. Single-layer devices protect against relatively large debris. They are the cheapest, but the quality of their work is low and they will need to be changed more often. These filters do not remove gases from the air.
  2. Double-layer filters allow you to retain not only large debris (branches, insects), but also small debris (smoke, soot).
  3. There are three-layer products. They provide the maximum degree of air filtration, but do not prevent the penetration of gases.
  4. Combination cabin filters can also be used. They use combined carbon. This variety is the highest quality and most expensive. The use of coal not only prevents particles and debris from entering the cabin, but also purifies the air from harmful gases.

You need to choose the option that suits the driver to the greatest extent.

It is not recommended to restore a part that has already exhausted its service life. In some cases, an exception to the rule may be a single-layer filter. However, this can only be considered as a temporary measure.

Buy filters for Peugeot 308 at AVTOMAG

Good consumables for the machine increase the period of its uninterrupted operation. And needless to say, how important it is to change all the filters in your car on time! We offer all types of original filters for the beautiful and reliable Peugeot 308 car. In AUTOMAG you can select all consumables in the selection system, accurately indicating your car and the required filter (or several). For example, we know that this car mainly has 1.4L engines. and 1.6l. article number of the original oil filter 1109.AH, cabin filter (charcoal) 6479.75. But only by accurately indicating all the details of your car, you will receive the most complete and clear information. Choosing a Peugeot 308 oil filter: what is it for? The production of technical fluids for modern cars is now at its best. And yet, the oils that we pour into the engine to reduce friction of parts can become clogged.

How to replace a consumable with your own hands?

To change the cabin filter, you will need to prepare a flat-head screwdriver, rubber gloves, a dust cloth and a vacuum cleaner. The filter can be reached by opening the hood. Next you need to do the following:

  1. On the left side under the glass you need to remove four clips. They need to be pryed off with a screwdriver and pulled up.
  2. Then the soundproofing protection is removed.
  3. Now you can see the plastic plug for the cabin filter. Its front plate has a rectangular shape with rounded edges. You need to pull it smoothly and forcefully, holding the handle. During this you need to be careful - the plug pops out sharply and can hit your hand.
  4. Now you can see the old filter. It needs to be pulled out towards you. It is recommended to clean and vacuum this area. Then a new cabin filter is inserted here.
  5. Then they put the protection in place and secure it with clips.

You can see a small arrow on the filter housing. If there is an inscription “AIR FLOW” here, then when installing it you need to have it facing downwards. If there is an inscription “UP”, then the arrow should point up. The whole procedure takes no more than 20 minutes.

Sometimes an aftermarket filter may be a slightly different size and may need to be trimmed to fit. In this case, the quality of his work decreases. It is recommended to use an original production filter in your car.

Engine Peugeot 408 150 hp

You can often hear that all French cars have difficulties with repairs. Let's consider this hypothesis using the example of the Peugeot 408, produced with an eye on Russia.

The Peugeot 408 can be equipped with three types of engines: TU5 with 110 hp, supercharged E6 with 150 hp, and naturally aspirated EP6 with 110 hp. and 120 hp The power of the naturally aspirated engine varies depending on the type of gearbox - a manual transmission produces only 110 hp, and an automatic one produces 120 hp.

The timing chain installed on all types of engines is durable and reliable, requiring virtually no maintenance during its entire service life. If the timing chain drive does require repair, a number of special tools will be required.

To change the belt on an EP6 inflatable engine, you need to reduce the tension and pull the water pump drive roller to the side by removing the holder on the tensioner housing. The service life of the belt is 80 thousand km.

The ignition coil of the naturally aspirated EP6 engine is located under a finishing cover fixed between two fasteners. On a supercharged engine, the bobbins are in plain sight. To replace the spark plugs, a 14mm multi-faceted spark plug head is required. They should be changed every 40-50 thousand km.

The Peugeot 408 got the turbodiesel from its predecessor. The manufacturer recommends checking the timing belt drive every 180 thousand km. This is after about 7 years of operation. However, any service station will tell you that you should not wait for the critical point and will advise you to change the belt after 120 thousand km. It is also worth inspecting the two tensioner pulleys and the pump. The belt drive contains marks and keys - any experienced driver will be able to inspect and repair it himself. In principle, the arrangement of parts in the engine compartment of a diesel engine is not much different from its gasoline counterpart, so there should not be any special problems. The service life of a particular consumable in a diesel engine is similar to that of a gasoline engine.

The air filter is located behind the engine. For a naturally aspirated engine, its top cover is secured with seven fasteners. A supercharged engine cannot boast of a large number of clamps, but removing the cover to replace the air filter is much more difficult - you need to unscrew the intake pipe and move the brake system expansion tank.

The fuel filter of the inflatable engine is remote and located near the tank. It should be changed after 40 thousand km. Fuel pipes are routed through plastic fasteners. For naturally aspirated engines, the filter most often comes complete with a fuel pump. Service life is not indicated.
