Throttle valve on Priora: where it is located, purpose, possible problems and repairs

Mechanical drive

The first models came with a cable drive. When you press the gas pedal, the force is transmitted mechanically.

The Priora throttle body additionally combines a position sensor for this element of the intake system and an idle speed regulator, which sets the crankshaft speed when the throttle is closed, as well as at the time of starting the engine and while connecting additional electrical equipment: headlights, air conditioning, electric heater motor salon It operates electrically. Which supplies air through the valve, bypassing the damper.

In addition, the housing is part of the crankcase cooling and ventilation system. The Priora throttle body with 16 valves differs from the throttle body of a car with 8 valves by an additional hole on the perimeter of the body on the side of the intake manifold.

Big throttle on LADA. Does it make sense to install it? Owner experience

Hi all!
In this text we will talk about such easy tuning of the intake system as installing a throttle valve of increased diameter. What does this give us? It allows the engine to pass the greatest amount of air. And the easier it is for him to do this, the greater the output power will be. Let me remind you that the diameter of the stock damper on VAZ 2108-2115 cars is 46 mm. Accordingly, when installing a throttle with a diameter of 52-56 mm on a car, in theory, the power should increase, which we will check later.

What size should I install the damper then?

By installing a throttle with a diameter of 56 mm on the “stock” motor, we will give the motor the opportunity to process air even more easily, compared to 52 and 54 mm, and even more so 46 mm. After all, with the same pressure on the gas pedal, much more air enters through 56 mm than through 46. But comfort in the cabin will be lost, a jerk will appear at the bottom, and you will also need to work more carefully with the accelerator pedal. In general, without a habit, it will be difficult at first.

52 mm is “neither two nor one and a half.” The effect will be practically unnoticeable! Since the difference with the “stock” one is only 8 mm. Money down the drain, so to speak.

It's best to set it to 54 mm, which is what I did. Some kind of golden mean. But this is all theory. Let's move on to practice.

Unfortunately, I myself forgot to measure the acceleration “before and after”. But on the well-known YouTube site I found a video of one guy who was just doing this procedure. At first he had a completely stock VAZ-2112 coupe. Acceleration from zero to 100 km/h was around 11.9 seconds. Then he installed a larger throttle (56mm) and it turned out that the acceleration from 0 to 100 took one second less than before, namely 10.9 seconds.

So, let's figure out what are the advantages of this tuning. Firstly, there are no difficulties during installation; it is installed in place of the standard one without any modifications. Secondly, the response to the gas pedal has become more responsive. Thirdly, low price. Fourthly, this tuning does not require any sports brains or tuning.

Disadvantages of a large throttle:

I personally had troubles with XX (idling speed);

twitching appeared at the “bottoms” (low revs);

the car begins to respond more sharply to small movements of the accelerator pedal, as a result, comfort in the cabin disappears and fuel consumption increases.

Conclusion: this spare part is needed by those who “chase power.” Who cares about horses under the hood rather than comfort? Such tuning will not appeal to a careful driver who is used to driving quietly and calmly.

Electric drive

Since 2011, cars produced by VAZ began to be equipped with an electronic gas pedal, which led to a change in the design of the Priora throttle valve.

Now the mechanism is driven by an electric motor connected through a gearbox. The idle speed regulator has been removed as unnecessary. The drive is controlled through an on-board computer, which, based on the readings of the damper position sensor, regulates the fuel mixture in the best possible way. The opening size began to depend not only on the accelerator, but also on the clutch and brake pedal. The damper returns to its original position using a return mechanism consisting of a spring.

The electronic drive allows you to maintain a constant engine speed when driving with varying loads, even without driver intervention.

DIY throttle tuning

The price of MD tuning at a service station is from 3,000 to 7,000 rubles. As the experience of VAZ and LADA owners shows, it is possible to correctly modify the throttle assembly (CS) yourself, without having any special knowledge or precisely verified drawings. The only special tools you need are a 6 mm spherical cutter and a drill.

  1. Remove the throttle assembly.
  2. Make two recesses around the damper (approximately 2-3 mm, no more than 5 mm), as shown in the drawing (great accuracy does not matter).
  3. Remove burrs with fine sandpaper.

The process is also shown in the video:

The process itself is not complicated and will not take much time. The advantage of MD tuning is that there is no need to flash the electronic engine control unit.

Node location

Opening the hood of the Priora, you won’t be able to see the throttle assembly. It is located under a plastic casing that covers the top of the engine. In addition to aesthetic value, it has the function of protecting against a heated valve cover.

After removing the casing, the air supply system will appear. It is a large rubber pipe connected on one side to the air filter box, and on the other to the intake manifold. A Priora throttle valve assembly is installed between them. It looks like an aluminum insert with a plastic black wing in the form of a sector, to which the control cable is connected (in the case of a mechanical drive).

Installing the throttle valve on an injection engine

To install the VAZ 2107 throttle valve in place, you need to perform the following steps:

1. Secure the damper drive cable, then replace the heating hoses and tighten all the clamps.

2. Next, screw on the cap of the expansion tank.

3. The next step is to install a forced ventilation system.

4. To complete the installation of the throttle valve, install a decorative plastic trim covering the upper part of the engine.

Maintenance frequency

Practice shows that the throttle needs to be cleaned at intervals of 40-60 thousand kilometers. The time when such a need arises can be determined by the following signs:

  1. Unstable speed.
  2. Long return to idle speed when releasing the accelerator pedal.
  3. Difficulty starting the engine after a long period of inactivity. Even in warm weather.
  4. The exhaust gases contain the smell of gasoline, indicating that the mixture is over-rich.

The manufacturer recommends cleaning every 50 thousand km. Owners of the Priora car name different numbers on thematic forums. Some people do not resort to this procedure throughout the entire use of the machine. Much depends on operating conditions: region, timeliness of replacing the air filter.

How to clean the throttle body yourself

Cleaning the damper is one of the procedures that is easy to do yourself. It takes no more than an hour.

Work is carried out on a cooled engine. Before you begin, you need to prepare wrenches, Phillips and flat head screwdrivers, and carburetor cleaner. To clean the Lada Priora throttle valve, you need to do the following:

  1. Put the car on the parking brake.
  2. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery.
  3. Remove the plastic protective cover from the engine. To do this, unscrew the oil filler cap. Remove the 4 rubber plugs around the perimeter of the casing. Then unfasten the adsorber valve with a screwdriver and move the wires to the side. After removing the casing, the oil filler cap must be replaced to prevent dirt from entering the engine.
  4. Disconnect the connectors from the Priora throttle sensor and the idle air control.
  5. Disconnect the cooling system hoses that heat the damper while the engine is running. Before loosening the clamps, you need to partially drain the coolant. Not completely, but only below the level of the throttle assembly. To do this, you need to open the cap of the expansion tank and, placing a flat container under the radiator, unscrew the radiator cap.
  6. Disconnect the crankcase ventilation system pipes.
  7. Loosen the clamp and remove the air pipe.

The resulting hole must be immediately covered with a rag. Otherwise, everything that gets inside will immediately be sucked into the engine at the moment of starting.

  8. Remove the two bolts securing the throttle body to the intake manifold.
  9. Disconnect the gas pedal cable. To do this, use a screwdriver to unhook the bracket that secures the metal tip of the cable.

Before cleaning the part, you must additionally remove the sensors from the housing. This should only be done for a power driven unit. As for the electronic gas damper, a control unit is attached to its body, which does not need to be removed. Moreover, when flushing the carburetor with cleaner, you need to make sure that the cleaning agent does not get on the control unit.

Installing a 52mm throttle in a Lada Priora

For a long time I wanted to personally check whether there is any gain from the increased throttle. Because the reviews on this matter are completely opposite, some say there is no benefit from it, others assure that it is absolutely necessary to install it.

Replacing the throttle is a simple and quick operation. You need to unscrew 2 nuts on M8, and rearrange 2 sensors attached to 2 thin bolts each.

the difference is noticeable to the naked eye

When measuring the results, I tried to minimize errors from the weather and changes in the position of related units. I took measurements on the same day, except for the throttle, I didn’t touch other pieces of hardware. I took measurements of the Mass Air Flow and Cyclic Filling on the standard throttle - 46mm, and then on the increased one - 52mm. I decided to take not individual peak values, but average values in ranges of 500 rpm, I think this will be more accurate.

According to the butt meter, there is an effect from the throttle, the car seems to drive faster. BUT…

Judging by the results, if there is an effect from the increased throttle, then it turned out to be “WITHOUT THE LIMITS OF MEASUREMENT ERROR.” The MRV at most points turned out to be larger, but literally within 1% But the CN, for some reason, turned out to be smaller, I cannot explain this, I reduce everything to measurement errors.

As a result, I put back my standard throttle, and with it the car drives softer and smoother. I also stuck in an air filter from Ford Focus2. I'll roll out the firmware, and for now I'll drive like this, with Forward Flow + Receiver + Filter FF2.

PS: Today I stopped by a car shop, saw a rubber pipe from a gazelle, it’s short, I’ve just installed the corner, the filter turned out to be in place of the standard filter, I also put a cut canister on it - it will be like a housing, now the air intake is again from the front of the engine compartment

Important addition

When cleaning the internal cavity, it is not recommended to change the position of the Priora throttle valve with electronic gas, since the drive gears can be damaged. The mechanical damper, on the contrary, can be rotated by the drive, completely opening access to the inside. You can also disconnect the damper from the rotation axis. It is secured with two bolts. However, you need to know how hard to tighten it back. If self-loosening occurs after assembly, the bolts will fall into the combustion chambers of the engine. To prevent this from happening, after finishing the work you need to drive 500 km, disassemble the unit again and tighten the damper fasteners.

After assembly, do not forget to add coolant to the operating level.

Adjusting the throttle valve drive of the first chamber of carburetor 2105, 2107 Ozone

If the throttle valve drive of the carburetor 2105, 2107 Ozone is incorrectly adjusted, the power and throttle response of the car engine may deteriorate. In addition, it is likely that fuel consumption will increase as the vacuum increases and, as a consequence, the flow of fuel from the diffuser nozzle of the first chamber of the carburetor will increase. Therefore, it is worth checking and subsequently adjusting the operation of the throttle valve drive of the first chamber. Tools required to adjust the drive : 8 mm open-end wrench. — Slotted screwdriver (3mm). — Ruler or caliper. - Flashlight. - Assistant.
