Life hack: power steering (power steering) of the Lada Priora, replacing the fluid, what it consists of

Thanks to the abundant distribution of domestic cars, drivers are constantly faced with their maintenance and repair. A popular question is what kind of oil to fill in the Priora power steering, when the procedure needs to be performed and how to properly service the car, we will deal with this.

How to change oil in power steering VAZ 2172

To perform the procedure correctly, the sequence of actions must be followed.

  1. Drive the car for several kilometers to fully warm up the working mixture. This will allow the liquid to drain out of the module as much as possible.
  2. Place a container of at least 1 liter in volume under the drain hole of the system.
  3. Unscrew the drain plug and wait for the grease to drain.
  4. Tighten the drain hole and wipe off the remaining mixture with a rag.
  5. Pour fresh oil into the expansion tank to the maximum mark.
  6. Turn the steering wheel without starting the engine 5-6 times until it stops in both directions. At the same time, new fluid will flow through the line, squeezing out the air.
  7. Inspect the power steering unit and, if necessary, top up the power steering to the maximum and repeat the procedure.
  8. Next, you will need to start the power plant for 10 seconds to equalize the pressure in the lines.

After completing the operation, the system is considered pumped and ready for further operation.

What oil to fill in power steering Lada Priora

Original

The recommended oil for power steering of the Lada Priora is Pentosin CHF 11S hydraulic fluid with article number 4 008849 503016. This is a universal synthetic oil with highly effective additives that protect the hydraulic mechanism from mechanical and thermal damage thanks to a stable lubricating film. In addition, the oil manufacturer claims high antioxidant and anti-corrosion properties of the product, as well as its adaptation to low temperatures.

Interchangeability and classification of oils

Typically, oils are divided into several types depending on color. How often to change the oil has already been described. The classification by color is not entirely correct. And don’t think that you can mix different brands of oils, even if they have exactly the same color. The composition and viscosity can always be different.

Power steering oils vary and have different features depending on the color.

There are some features associated with the color of the oil that are worth considering in more detail.

  • Green color. This family is mainly used in VAG, Citroen, and Peugeot cars. The main thing is to never mix mineral water with synthetics if they have this color. Automatic transmission oil is never suitable.
  • Mercedes cars use a yellow grade of oil.
  • Dexrons are red. Only for automatic transmissions.

Synthetic oil can be added to power steering, but not in every case. To get the desired result, you need to understand whether the rubber parts have a special composition. But there are quite a few such options available.

Using this device you can see the color of the power steering oil.

Replacing power steering Priora

LADA Priora car contacted a service station was extraneous noise when the steering wheel moved. During diagnostics, a humming sound from the power steering pump was detected. Apparently its work has come to an end, or the power steering has been changed very rarely (the recommended frequency is 50-60 thousand kilometers ). You can try to simply change the fluid to the original one or try to temporarily restore the pump, but it is better to immediately replace the power steering on the Priora and not waste time. In addition, it is cheaper than buying fluid and a repair kit twice.

Operating procedure

Before starting work, you need to prepare a container where the oil will drain. Castrol is no exception.

  1. Jack up the front wheels. Two tools should be enough for this. The procedure will be especially useful when you have to drain the old composition.
  2. A bulb or syringe will help rid the structure of old liquid. The oil tank becomes one of the most important parts.
  3. It is necessary to cover the belts with something. This will protect them from the oil, otherwise it will be difficult to get rid of the marks later.
  4. You need to call an assistant so that he can twist the steering wheel as much as possible, either to the right or to the left. Oil will appear in the tank again, which must be pumped out immediately.
  5. The return hose is turned off. It doesn't matter if you use Hadot oil, Eneos oil or something else.
  6. The hose is lowered into the bottle, after which the old excess liquid is drained again.
  7. You can connect the hose back when everything is completely drained.
  8. A new composition is poured in until the Lada Priora part is completely filled. The frequency of replacement has already been described previously.
  9. Again you need to ask someone to turn the steering wheel. Oil is added to the system as it drains.
  10. The specification says that you need to start the engine for 10-15 seconds after the work has been completed. The liquid will begin to decrease again. And again topping up is required.
  11. It remains to make sure that when turning the steering wheel no air bubbles appear in the tank. Power steering always requires such checks.
  12. If necessary, add oil to the appropriate level.

Power steering oil change process.

After all the steps have been completed, you need to start the engine and turn the steering wheel to the side. Factory oil should not cause any problems. The presence of hum is also unacceptable. The rotation should be very smooth, without any problems.

Repair: removal and installation of power steering Lada Priora

Replacement of Gur Priora and its repair must begin with correct diagnosis. It is also worth inspecting the reservoir of pipes and hoses in order to notice any damage in time. To remove the power steering you will need:

  • stopper for retaining rings;
  • key 12, head 14, 24;
  • new bearing;
  • syringe and container for draining liquid;
  • fine-grained sandpaper and clean rags.

Working with power steering requires care - the system must remain sealed. The low pressure hose (2110 3408026 – article number) is often damaged. Therefore, the reason for the intrusion into the power steering system is the replacement of the Priora power steering hose. Repair work is carried out as follows:

  1. Park the car on level ground, tighten the handbrake, remove the negative from the battery.
  2. Find the hole in the pulley and unscrew the mounting bolt that secures the pump;
  3. Use a syringe to pump out the oil from the system. At the same time, rotate the steering wheel in different directions so that the liquid comes out of the hoses;
  4. Loosen the clamp attached to the reservoir hose. Take out the hose;
  5. Remove the bolt that secures the high pressure hose;
  6. Remove the bolt and replace it with a metal rod of the same diameter.
  7. Take out the pump, clean it of dirt, you can clean all the systems connected to it of dirt.
  8. If repair or replacement of the system is required, after repair, reassemble everything in the reverse order.

Changing the power steering oil of a Priora - Community "VAZ: Repair and Improvement" on DRIVE2

So I decided to change the oil in the power steering, after 5 years of operation it became completely black.

First, you need to raise the front of the car to make it easier to turn the wheels and thereby expel old oil from the system, I lifted it with 2 jacks.

To pump out oil from the tank, I bought a 20-gauge syringe and connected it to a piece of plastic tube from the washer; you can use a tube from the system or something else, as you like.

I made sure to cover the belts, they don’t like oil and deteriorate a lot, I used a regular rag, but I think it would be better to use some kind of bag.

We begin to pump out the oil into any convenient container.

After the oil in the tank has run out, we ask a friend to turn the steering wheel making full turns, and we see how oil appears in the tank again, we begin to pump it out again. This procedure with turning the steering wheel could have been omitted, but since I did it the first time, I did it according to the instructions found on the Internet. Next, I disconnected the return hose, took a smaller bottle, cut a hole in it and directed the hose into it.

Again we ask a friend to turn the steering wheel, and we see how the system expels the remaining oil. As a result, we see how much oil was pumped out and what color it is.

We connect the hose back to the tank, I immediately changed the clamp because... The old one stopped tightening. It seems like it costs 10 rubles. We fill in new oil almost to the brim of the tank. I bought Febi for 370 rubles, an analogue of Pentosin. Of course, Pentosin is better, but it costs more than 700 rubles and for the first time in the form of flushing the system it will do just fine, because... To solve the problem with the humming of the power steering pump and vibration when turning the steering wheel, it is necessary to replace the return hose with a new type hose, but I have not found it yet, then in the future I will change the oil again.

As soon as the oil is poured into the reservoir, ask your friend to turn the steering wheel again, the oil will begin to flow into the system. As soon as it is gone, add oil and ask a friend to start the engine for 5-10 seconds, at this moment we observe how the oil begins to leave again and add it if necessary. We turn off the engine and turn the steering wheel again, making 5-7 full revolutions and observing how bubbles of air expelled from the system appear in the barrel. Add oil if necessary to the required level and enjoy the work done.

You can also rinse the tank, because... the filter there is probably dirty, but I'll do that next time.

Is it worth pumping yourself?

The question is purely individual. It depends on your skills, capabilities and desire to save. The cost of the working fluid itself for power steering depends on many parameters, and therefore prices vary from 4 to 15 dollars per 1 liter. In total, pumping and replacement will require from 1 to 3 liters.

When you contact a car service center, they will charge you at least 1,000 rubles for pumping work. The replacement procedure costs about 2000 rubles. Now decide for yourself whether it’s worth spending money on this, or take everything into your own hands and solve the issue yourself.

Replacing fluid in the power steering on a Priora

Welcome! Oil in the hydraulic power steering - thanks to it, the ease of rotation of the steering wheel is ensured (I mean thanks to the oil), but thanks to the hydraulic power steering itself, of course, it is easy to turn the steering wheel, but if there is no oil in it, then it will not work either, Therefore, you need to constantly monitor the oil level and be sure to change the oil itself from time to time, because it, like any other oil, does not last forever.
Note! In order to change the oil in the power steering, you will need to stock up on a set of tools, namely: We recommend that if you have two jacks, they are needed to lift both front wheels up and thereby the steering wheel will turn much easier, and the steering wheel you will have to turn for a very long time with the power steering not working, since when changing the oil it will not work for you, and you will also need to stock up on a medical syringe and a small long hose that you will put on this syringe, and you will also need a container into which you will drain used oil and, accordingly, a few unnecessary rags in order to cover with them all the belts on which oil could presumably get on when draining the used fluid from the power steering reservoir!

Summary:

Where is the power steering reservoir located? In general, when changing the oil, you will use only this tank, because it contains the oil itself and you won’t even need to get to the other parts of the power steering, but the tank is located in the engine compartment of the car, so you will need to first open the hood and then find it (It is indicated in the photo below by an arrow).

When should you change the power steering oil? It is recommended to change the oil once every 2, or at least once every 3 years, during which time the oil already loses all its additives and in connection with this, extraneous noise may appear when the power steering is operating, and vibrations emitted by the power steering may also appear, and in general, you can’t drive on old oil (We’ll call it used oil) for a long time, because it loses its additives, and if it loses its additives, then its purpose is to protect the bellows from breakdowns and because of this the mechanism will fail much faster.

Note! Don’t always look at how long the car has run on new oil, or how many years have passed since the last fill, it’s better to check everything yourself, regardless of the numbers, to do this, unscrew the top cap of the tank (It is also indicated by the arrow), and after it you will be turned out, look at the oil itself, if it is darkened and there is also a burning smell to all this, then this oil must be changed to a new one without delay!

Power steering fluid level: how to check and top up

Replacing the power steering on a Priora with your own hands is a mandatory operation for everyone. Power steering or power steering is a device that is now found in almost every car of both domestic and foreign origin. Thanks to it, less force is applied to the steering wheel, which makes driving absolutely safe. Therefore, many are beginning to be interested in the question of which power steering oil is better, how to replace the composition if necessary.

Location of the power steering on the Priora.

The design itself will be especially relevant for SUVs and large trucks. It also has several additional features:

Over time, the hydraulic oil needs to be changed. This occurs when a leak occurs or according to the supplied instructions.

But many people believe that adding oil is not necessary, nor is changing it, because the car feels and behaves great on the road.

Experts still recommend carrying out this procedure approximately every 3 years of operation, or 50–60 thousand kilometers.

Changing the oil in a VAZ power steering on your own is difficult, but possible

Changing power steering oil for VAZ

As practice shows, such a procedure as changing the oil in the power steering of a VAZ 2112 is little familiar to most motorists. What can I say, many do not consider it necessary to waste their time and money on servicing a unit that works without any comments, with constant accuracy and without extraneous sounds. Such thoughts, as a rule, lead to disastrous results and the cost of the car owner's irresponsibility may not be comparable to the cost of periodic maintenance. In order for you to understand how important it is to change the power steering oil of the VAZ 2112, I suggest you familiarize yourself in general terms with the structure of this complex and expensive unit.

Design and principle of operation

Purpose

Modern automotive industry has long moved from pure mechanics in mechanism control drives to amplifiers of various types: hydraulic, pneumatic and electric. The steering mechanism of a modern car is equipped with amplifiers of both electric and hydraulic types, which greatly facilitate driving by reducing the gear ratios in the steering mechanism. The power steering faces several difficult and very important tasks:

  • Due to the elastic properties of the liquid, it absorbs the shock load received from road unevenness (affects the straightness of movement);
  • By adjusting the pressure, change the force applied to the steering wheel by the driver (promotes “steering feel”).

Design

The steering mechanism, which has a hydraulic booster, consists of:

  • Power steering pump and container with hydraulic fluid. The pump is driven by the engine crankshaft via a drive belt;
  • The steering mechanism itself, consisting of a spool-type control unit and a hydraulic cylinder made in one housing;
  • Low and high pressure pipelines connecting them.

Steering mechanism with hydraulic booster

Principle of operation

This system uses a vane type pump.

Pump

Operating principle of the power steering pump

When the shaft rotates, the blades move along the “ellipse” body of the pump stator, pressing against it due to the centrifugal force created by the rotation of the shaft. The elliptical shape of the stator, in turn, allows you to change the volume of fluid between the blades and the housing, which creates significant pressure. That is, when the volume is large, the pump “suction” occurs, while the liquid “pressure” decreases.

Top 15 fluids for power steering (psf, atf, dextron). which ones are better

All power steering fluids differ from each other, not only in color, but also in their characteristics: oil composition, density, viscosity, mechanical properties and other hydraulic indicators.

Therefore, if you are concerned about the long and stable operation of your car’s hydraulic power steering, you need to follow the operating rules, change the fluid in the power steering on time and fill it with the best quality fluid. To operate the power steering pump, two types of fluids are used - mineral or synthetic, in combination with additives that play a major role in the operation of the hydraulic booster.

Main faults of the hydraulic booster on a Lada Priora car

When operating a Priora with power steering, the following problems may occur:

  • When turning the steering wheel, a feedback is felt, similar to a push in the opposite direction (replacing or tightening the drive belt will help);
  • It is difficult to turn the steering wheel (replacing or tightening the belt will help; adding fluid to the tank to the normal level, replacing or cleaning the filter; replacing the pump; removing the air lock or adjusting the idle speed);
  • The steering is too “smooth” (adding fluid, removing the air lock and checking the steering, changing the tires will help);
  • Extraneous noise during operation of the power steering (adding fluid, removing air lock or mechanical damage, checking the pump and replacing it will help);
  • The steering wheel vibrates with weak shocks (removing the air lock in the system, balancing the wheels or changing the tires will help).
