Replacing the damper and adjusting the valves on a VAZ 2106

There are cases when, when the engine of a VAZ classic is running, extraneous sounds appear, similar to the operation of a diesel engine; one of the reasons for the appearance of such a sound is a torn damper. Needs replacement. What are the signs, how to determine that this is a break in the damper and how to replace the timing chain damper on a classic, see the video using the example of a VAZ 2106 car.

In addition, the instructions will be useful in that they show the complete process of adjusting valves on a VAZ 2106 with your own hands in a garage. Therefore, to find out the correct order of how to adjust the valves on a VAZ 2106, watch the video to the end, the master will tell you many important and interesting points, since in this case the valves were adjusted after the engine was running on gas, so car owners who find themselves in a similar situation, watch this instructions will be very helpful. Additional information on adjusting valves on classics can also be found on the page: how valves are adjusted on a VAZ 2105.

Replacing the VAZ 2106 chain guide

On a VAZ 2106 car, the camshaft drive chain guide is located inside the front part of the cylinder head on the left and is attached to it from the outside with two bolts.
If the drive chain guide is worn or damaged in some engine operating modes, resonant oscillations of the drive chain may occur, which can lead to the chain jumping on the camshaft sprocket teeth and serious engine damage. To replace the VAZ 2106 damper you will need: a screwdriver with a flat blade, keys (preferably sockets) “8”, “10”, “13”, “17”. 1. Remove the air filter (see “Removing and installing the air filter”). 2. Remove the cylinder head cover (see “Checking and setting the valve timing by marks”). 3. Unscrew the chain tensioner cap nut approximately 0.5 turn.

4. Release the chain tension by pressing the tensioner shoe with a screwdriver and tighten the tensioner cap nut. 5. Hook the chain guide with a wire (or hook) onto the hole in its plate so as not to drop the guide into the engine sump. 6. While holding the chain guide, unscrew the two bolts securing it. 7. Loosen the tension of the drive chain branch by turning the camshaft sprocket clockwise using a wrench by its fastening bolt, i.e. in the direction of shaft rotation. At the same time, remove the damper by lifting it up.

8. Install a new chain guide 3 on the VAZ 2106 car in the reverse order of removal. Please note that its mounting bolts are of different lengths - the lower bolt 1 is shorter than the upper bolt 2. NOTE When purchasing a new chain guide, pay attention to the markings. The engine chain damper mod. VAZ 2106 and 21011 there is a long longitudinal mark on the working surface of the damper pad. The engine damper mod. VAZ 2103 does not exist.

9. Adjust the tension of the camshaft drive chain (see “Adjusting the tension of the camshaft drive chain”) and install the previously removed parts in the reverse order.

Self-production

In addition to purchasing, many consider making a bicycle chain guide themselves. Indeed, there is nothing complicated about it. There are visual diagrams for rockrings and mounts, but for pen mounts there are do-it-yourself options that are even more reliable than those sold in stores.

What is usually made:

  • partial rockring with BB mount, full rockring without damper - metal work;
  • full ISCG mount with frames - you can do it yourself without metalworking;
  • separate partially mounted rollers for front or rear sprocket;
  • Protective frames for the chain - conditionally, are not dampers, but effectively perform their function.

Chain stabilizer VAZ 2106 replacement

On all engines from the VAZ “classic” series, the chain guides are located on the left side and are attached to the block with two bolts. The damper serves to dampen circuit vibrations. For repairs to replace the VAZ 2106 damper, we will need wrenches “8” “10” “13” “17”, as well as a screwdriver with a flat blade. If you have everything, then you can proceed:

In the figure below you can see the location and fastening of the damper outside the engine and in the cavity of the cylinder head.

  • The first step is to remove the cylinder head cover (see Replacing the cylinder head cover gasket).
  • Next, unscrew the tensioner cap nut a couple of turns and loosen the chain tension. To loosen the camshaft drive chain, simply use a screwdriver to press out the shoe. Tighten the cap nut.

  • Now take a piece of steel wire, make a hook out of it and hook the damper onto the hole in its plate.
  • Holding the damper on the hook, unscrew the two bolts that secure it.
  • Now we need to loosen the chain a little more; to do this, turn the camshaft sprocket in the direction of rotation and at the same time lift the damper with the hook.

Mounting types

There are three standards for mounting a chain guide:

  • BB – mounting on a carriage that presses the stabilizer to the bicycle frame. Typically used for bananas and other partial protections;
  • ISCG (International Standard Chain Guide) – fastening to the frame with bolts at three points located around the circumference. The diameter of the circle is 59.24 mm, the distance between the mounting points is 47.77 mm;
  • ISCG 05 is a standard that replaced the previous one just two years later. Currently supported by all major manufacturers. The diameter of the circle is 73 mm, the distance between the mounting points is 55.92 mm.

There are other standards, for example, experiments from SRAM, but they have not received widespread support.

Replacing the chain guide on a VAZ 2106

The chain guide is located on the side opposite the tensioner shoe and is attached to the engine with two bolts of different lengths. Its main purpose is to dampen the vibrations of the circuit that occur during its operation. If it malfunctions, large vibrations of the chain may occur, which can lead to it jumping off the sprockets and causing serious damage to the engine. If you decide to remove the damper for repair or replacement, we need to prepare keys for eight 10, 13 and 17. In the figure, number 7 indicates the tensioner shoe, and three indicates the damper.

In the photo, the arrows show the nuts that secure the damper, and the eye that you need to hook it to when removing it.

  1. To access the damper, you need to remove the cover from the gas distribution mechanism.
  2. Then, having unscrewed the chain tensioner nut, we loosen the tension of the latter by squeezing the shoe with a screwdriver.
  3. Fix the shoe by tightening the tensioner nut.
  4. We hook a hook made of wire to a special hole in the eye and unscrew the bolts securing the damper.
  5. We turn the camshaft a little along the way with the wrench and at the same time lifting the hook up, remove the damper from the engine.

If you decide to replace the dampener, then when purchasing it, check the markings on it. On the damper for model 2106, a longitudinal mark is applied on the surface of its lining. There is no such mark on dampers for model 2103.

After completing the damper replacement operation, put all the parts in the reverse order and adjust the chain tension.

Purchase

Prices for such devices vary greatly - from 1000 rubles. for Chinese plastic or a product from a nearby workshop, up to 100 dollars or more for professional kits with rockring and high-quality rollers.

The product market is quite narrow. There are only a few decent companies:

  • Truvativ is a brand from SRAM, the undisputed leader in quality. Officially imported into Russia by several companies;
  • Hope is a British company that relies on modern materials in the manufacture of bicycle parts;
  • Funn is also a British company, imported into the Russian Federation quite rarely, and prices are usually inflated;
  • Shimano - occupy the middle price segment.

Strictly speaking, the “calming” element is a roller that supports the chain. Sedatives can be:

  • with one and two rollers (upper and lower) - quite often they stop at only one, since such a design will already perform the main function;
  • with wide rollers for two front sprockets - for high-speed bicycles;
  • without rollers - the frame will be responsible for holding the chain in such a device. If the damper is installed with tolerance and does not provide for constant exposure, this option is simpler and easier.

Rockring

Rockring is a power element for protecting the front sprocket from impacts with the ground, sides and other obstacles. In fact, it is not even a damper, since rockring can be installed separately, and their production volumes are even wider.

The rockring is a standard size circle, slightly larger than a star, mounted on a standard mount and replacing the largest star on the system. Unlike the entire design, the rockring can be used in conjunction with the front derailleur.

Rockring is made from impact-resistant plastic or metal. The choice of material depends on price and purpose. In order to facilitate the design, many options are the so-called “banana”. This is a part of the circle, installed similarly to a full rockring and covering the most dangerous directions of the strike from below.

Dampener VAZ 2106: do-it-yourself replacement

In the article you will learn about the VAZ 2106 damper and the method of replacing it. The service life of this device is quite long, but sooner or later it needs to be changed - otherwise the gas distribution mechanism will not work properly. The entire replacement procedure happens quickly - it will take you longer to prepare. And to do this you will need to remove the air filter cover, the block head, and move the choke and throttle cables to the side.

Labeling

Before starting work, you need to understand that it is important that during the process of replacing the timing belt, the pre-set risks do not go astray. Otherwise, you will have to go deeper into the settings and spend more than one hour installing the part

When installing the timing belt, it is important to align the pistons so that in the first cylinder the piston is at the highest point of the first cylinder. In this position the piston is at its maximum distance from the crankshaft

This is the position the engine is in when the marks are correctly set. In this position it is necessary to change the timing belt.

The number of marks, as well as their location, may vary depending on your engine type.

The following marks can be distinguished:

  • Mark on the flywheel.
  • Mark on the pulley.
  • Camshaft mark (two on a 16 valve engine).

They all must match before replacing the timing belt. In order to set the correct position, turn the crankshaft by the bolt securing the pulley to it

Please note: it is prohibited to turn the camshaft pulley

After you have set TDC, replace the belt and tighten the tensioner.

At the end of the work on installing the belt, rotate the crankshaft several revolutions, check if the marks have gone astray. Repeat the adjustment if necessary.

Nature of tensioner mechanism breakdowns

Since the tensioning mechanism consists of a damper, a shoe and a shoe fitting, any failure will be associated with the failure of one of these elements:

  1. The fitting may break due to corrosion processes or mechanical wear. The result is that the shoe no longer extends and puts pressure on the chain, which becomes unstable and too loose. In extreme cases, it can even break completely. Replacing the fitting is the only possible measure to eliminate the problem in question. Since the body of the part is non-separable, repair is impossible.
  2. The damper can fail as a result of metal fatigue failure or a weak chain that hits the bolts, weakens them and breaks the damper. Replacing the element in question is also the only option in this situation. The new part must be original, but not from a Chinese manufacturer.
  3. The tension shoe wears out, causing vibrations and impacts. The element should be replaced, since its polymer coating cannot be restored under domestic conditions.
  4. If the chain cannot be tensioned, the cap nut is not loosened enough or the fitting has not been discharged as a result of failure. Check the condition of the parts in question and correct any problems.
