VAZ 11183 (VAZ 21114)

Lada Kalina cars began to be equipped with VAZ 11183 (or VAZ 21114) power units in 2004, and then it was inherited by the Grant “standard”. This is a rather simple and primitive four-cylinder engine with 8 valves, producing 82 hp. and volume 1.6 l.

It cannot boast of solid power characteristics, but it does not cause any special problems when driving, and it is also very easy to maintain. It is distinguished by its environmental friendliness and reliability, while it also has good elasticity characteristics. In addition, this motor is known as one of the most torquey, especially at the bottom.

Malfunctions, causes, elimination

The first drawback of Lada Granta engines, as already mentioned, is the bending of the valves when the belt breaks. To avoid this malfunction, it is necessary to change it in time and visit service centers for maintenance. Then the valves will not bend, since the updated belt will last for another 100 thousand kilometers.

Young people are trying to tune the power units of cars produced by the Lada Granta plant. This includes increasing engine power. To do this, they do chip tuning, that is, they program the electronic brains of the engine, or install a turbocharger. All this leads to the rapid depletion of the engine’s vital reserves and affects its operation. A tuned engine loses 50 thousand kilometers, which it would have covered if it had been left aspirated. And that's the minimum.

Other problems are hidden in the malfunction of hydraulic valve lifters. This is also a common malfunction that car owners have to deal with. This can only be solved by installing new hydraulic pushers.

Forgetting to regularly replace filters leads to system contamination. Crumbs from used engine parts appear and travel through the oil system. It acts as an abrasive on the pistons and wears them out. The solution to this problem is to regularly replace the filter elements, especially for oil and fuel filters.

The knocking sound of the crankshaft main bearings is a concern for car owners. In this case, you need to make sure that the oil pressure in the engine is normal. Tighten the flywheel mounting bolts.

If everything is fine with the bolts and oil, then you may have to replace the crankshaft bearings or grind the journals, or reduce the clearance in the thrust bearing. As a last resort, replace the crankshaft.

Engine Features

Due to the design of the car's cooling system, the engine does not warm up above 80 degrees. A less powerful 16-valve engine for the Lada Grant is model 21126, which was developed nine years ago. In fact, this power unit can be called a logical continuation of the VAZ-21124 line. Engine 21127

The second version of the 16-valve engine is the same 1.6-liter 21127, which was developed only three years ago. It boasts a maximum power of 106 horsepower, a torque of 148 Nm at four thousand revolutions, and an average fuel consumption of seven liters in the combined cycle.

Engine life

The engine life is limited to 200,000 km.

Experts note such positive aspects, in comparison with the predecessor VAZ-21126, as greater engine thrust at the “bottoms”, which leads to noticeable changes in operation.

"Sporting power" Lada Granta (21126-77)

Separately, it is worth highlighting the fifth type of power unit, which is known as VAZ-21126-77. This modification claims to be “sports”, as it has maximum power.

Such engines are installed on the Lada Granta in the “Lux” configuration.

The engine volume will be the same 1.6 liters, but some improvements have made it possible to increase the maximum power to 120 horsepower. In fact, additional power is added after reaching the mark of three thousand revolutions per minute. Otherwise, the engine is very similar to its “ancestor” in the person of the VAZ-21126. This also applies to the fact that if the timing belt breaks, the valves will be damaged.

Advantages of engine 21126-77

Additionally, it can be noted that the “sports” modification has been produced for three years now, and can boast of a compression ratio in the cylinders reaching 11. The maximum power of 120 “horses” can only be obtained by dialing 5900 rpm. At the same time, the torque has also increased slightly, which at its maximum can offer 154 Nm.

But, again, this will require spinning the unit to an impressive level of more than 4.7 thousand revolutions per minute.

Fuel consumption

All this could not help but show up in fuel consumption. Compared to its predecessor, this engine has grown by almost a liter, and now reaches 7.8 liters per hundred kilometers in the combined cycle.

The engine life will remain the same - only 200 thousand kilometers. But this figure may be even lower, especially if driving in an aggressive style.

VAZ 21116 - set to “norm” on Grant

This engine can be called a modernized version of the previous 114, and the only difference between it and its predecessor is the installed lightweight connecting rod and piston group. That is, the pistons began to be made lighter, but this led to a number of negative consequences:

  • Firstly, now there is no space left for the recesses in the pistons, and if the timing belt breaks, the valve will bend 100%.
  • The second, even more negative point. Due to the fact that the pistons have become thin, when they meet the valves, they break into pieces and in 80% of cases they also have to be replaced.

There were many cases when almost all the valves and a couple of pistons with connecting rods had to be changed on such an engine. And if you calculate the entire amount that will have to be paid for repairs, then in most cases it can exceed half the cost of the power unit itself.

But in terms of dynamics, this engine outperforms a conventional 8-valve engine due to the lightweight internal combustion engine parts. And the power is about 87 hp, which is 6 horsepower more than the 21114. By the way, it works much quieter, which cannot be ignored.

8 valve engines

Unlike 16 valves, a single-shaft gas distribution system is used here. There are two valves for each cylinder: intake and exhaust. Such engines are reliable and do not bend valves when the timing belt breaks, but are significantly inferior in the dynamic performance of the vehicle, as well as in the noise level of the internal combustion engine.

Engine VAZ 11183

This engine was installed not only on Grants, but also on the last 2114 years of production. The engine is quite noisy and requires frequent valve adjustment due to the lack of hydraulic compensators. 183 the engine does not bend the valve when the timing belt breaks. This is the only engine installed on the Grant that is not afraid of timing belt breakage.

Engine VAZ 11186

This engine is installed in the last years of Granta production. It significantly reduced the noise characteristics and increased the compression ratio, which led to the meeting of the valves with the pistons when the timing belt breaks. Increasing the compression ratio made it possible to achieve more power from the internal combustion engine, which was beneficial for the dynamic characteristics.

Design Features

By default, the 11186 engine retains all the design features of the original 21114, from which it originated:

  • volume 1.6 l;
  • the block height is 2.3 mm greater than that of 2110;
  • crankshaft with an increased crank radius by the same 2.3 mm (piston stroke 75.6 mm, respectively);
  • ShPG, flywheel and crown from 2110.

In addition, a feature for the 11186 engine is the bending of the valves on the pistons when the timing belt drive breaks:

  • the piston skirt is reduced here to make it lighter;
  • It is physically impossible to make a deep hole for the valve inside the piston.

The manufacturer's manual contains a description of the components and parameters of the internal combustion engine, which are most often compared with the characteristics of the 11183 engine, which has the most similar markings. The main differences between these power drives from the same manufacturer are:

  • torque is 15 Nm more;
  • power 87 l. With. instead of 82 l. With.;
  • motor 11186 has been produced since 2011, and its predecessor 11183 since 2004;
  • instead of serial pistons from 2110 weighing 350 g, a lightweight version 21116 weighing 240 g is used;
  • connecting rod length increased from 121 mm to 133.32 mm;
  • the piston skirt has a graphite coating, the metal in the area of ​​the first ring is anodized;
  • combustion chamber 30 cm 3 instead of 26 cm 3;
  • compression ratio increased from 9.6 to 10.5;
  • The cylinder head gasket is all-metal, its thickness has been reduced from 1.2 mm to 0.43 mm;
  • the cylinder head is 1.2 mm higher to compensate for the enlarged combustion chamber;
  • the diameter of the bolts was reduced from M12 to M10 to reduce cylinder deformations during tightening;
  • the flow channels in the cylinder head have been increased in diameter, nozzles have been installed to cool the piston heads;
  • the working chamfer under the valves is maintained longer due to the strengthening of the aluminum alloy using a special technology;
  • since the holes in the pistons are not enough to ensure the safety of the valves, a high-strength timing belt from the Gates manufacturer is used;
  • the camshaft V-belt received an automatic tensioner, which had not previously been used in VAZ engines;
  • the piston system is protected externally from overheating by a cooling jacket integrated into the cylinder block;
  • the length of the receiver channels has been increased, the characteristics of the internal combustion engine are close to those of a 16 valve engine;
  • the catalytic collector has a flattened block, which made it possible to separate the ducts and get rid of power losses and turbulence;
  • the generator is mounted on a bracket, so its drive belt is not overtightened, like 11183, and lasts longer;
  • The cabin heat exchanger and expansion tank are included in the thermostat in parallel, the operating error has decreased to 2 degrees instead of 5 degrees.


According to the AvtoVAZ plant, the ICE 11186 has a potential of 120 hp. (without resource reduction) or 180 l. With. (the resource will be reduced due to intensive wear of the piston). The manufacturer recommends tuning exclusively through modifications of components and mechanisms without the use of turbines.

Series 21126 and 21127

Often, when buying a luxury Lada Granta, buyers think about which engine is better. In this case, you should also decide what the buyer is willing to sacrifice: power (which he can boost by tuning the Lada Granta engine) or the high cost of engine repairs.

Engine 211126, also installed on the Lada Priora, has a volume of 1.6 liters and a 16-valve cylinder head (cylinder head) system. If the buyer does not want to deal with the problem of bending valves, it is better to choose a different motor. The advantage of this engine is its high power. According to the passport data, it is 98 liters. s., but tests on stands showed higher results.

For fans of engines with absolute pressure sensors instead of a mass air flow sensor, it is better to choose 21127. This engine has 106 horsepower, which is provided by a modified and larger receiver, this power is felt, especially at low speeds. The car is more dynamic when overtaking or making a sharp start.

Engine 21116 with 87 hp. is one of the most popular among Lada Granta car owners. This is due to the fact that it is this modification of the engine that is included in the most popular “Norma” configuration.

Description

The Grant engine is a modernized version of the long-produced engines 21124 and 11183. It differs from its predecessors by the presence of a 39% lighter connecting rod and piston group developed by Federal Mogul.
For the VAZ-11186 engine it is manufactured directly at AvtoVAZ OJSC. As a result of the modernization, significantly:

  • power increased;
  • exhaust toxicity has decreased;
  • fuel consumption has decreased.

The cylinder head has become much stronger, since during manufacturing it undergoes a special heat treatment cycle. In addition, it is further strengthened by metal gaskets.

Despite the fact that all the motors in the line are assembled according to an identical design, the 11186 engine has a number of design features. Among them are:

  1. Improved cooling system for the block and cylinder head. The piston group is covered with a cooling jacket along its entire height and is equipped with piston cooling nozzles, which prevents deformation of the cylinder block due to uneven heating.
  2. Using a new camshaft drive design equipped with an automatic tensioner.
  3. The original design of the crankshaft, equipped with special oil channels, which are closed with plugs. This required the use of high-strength cast iron for its manufacture.

A significant drawback of the grant engine is that if the timing belt breaks, the valves bend, which can lead to failure of the power unit as a whole (breakage of pistons and cylinders). In order to protect the engine, a highly reliable drive belt is installed at the manufacturing plant during assembly, which is manufactured by the American company Gates Rubbler Company. The service life of this belt is at least 200 thousand kilometers.

Interesting: As a result of modernizing the VAZ-11186 engine, it became possible to equip it with an electric throttle valve drive (E-gas). This allows you to increase its power to 90 hp. With.

Differences between series 21116 and 11186

Connecting rods often break as well. The total cost of repairs in such cases can reach or even exceed half the cost of a Lada Grant engine.

However, lovers of maneuverability in driving will like this engine more than 21114. It is 6 hp stronger. With. and is much quieter. As a result, additional chip tuning and noise insulation may not be required. It all depends on the wishes of the driver.

For comparison, according to the passport, the engine with index 11183 fits into 7.2 liters in the combined cycle, which is 0.2 liters more.

All of the mentioned engines have a gas distribution mechanism with 2 valves on each cylinder, which has not been a sign of engine perfection for a long time. However, here the main emphasis should be on structural reliability and excellent engine life, since the engines do not experience extreme overloads and are able to operate for a long time without failure.

Engines 11186, 21116 are four-stroke, with distributed fuel injection and overhead timing gear parts. The main technical parameters are:

  • working volume - 1593 cm 3;
  • torque - 140 Nm when reaching 3800 rpm;
  • acceleration to 100 km/h - 1.5 seconds;
  • maximum speed - 166 km/h;
  • connecting rod and piston group - Federal Mogul;
  • Timing drive - belt, with automatic tensioner;
  • pistons are cooled using special oil nozzles.

The start of operation of the Lada Grant showed that the dynamics and traction characteristics with the installation of such engines, although improved, still remained average, which forced owners of AvtoVAZ products to modernize their vehicles.

Motor series 21114

The 114th Lada Granta engine is available for standard equipment; some drivers update its electronic control unit. Chip tuners and diagnosticians calibrate the engine and sometimes change the program code. After well-performed 30 to 1000 calibrations, the car becomes more maneuverable and the engine runs smoother.

The torque and power of the motor also increase. Fuel consumption is sharply reduced. There are many advantages, but there is only one drawback: it is better not to do excessively frequent calibrations (as well as tuning performed by a non-professional) - this can lead to a deterioration in all of the above indicators.

This engine came from the Lada Kalina. Its volume is 1.6 liters, and it has 8 valves. Although its power is small, it is the most torquey of all domestic engines. People experience virtually no discomfort while driving. In this case, before doing chip tuning, you should decide what is more important: speed and fuel consumption or a comfortable ride.

Another big advantage of this engine is the reliability of the gas distribution mechanism.

Often, if the timing belt breaks, you can replace it on the road without problems and continue your trip to the nearest inspection station. This is due to the fact that in this engine the valves do not collide with the pistons and, accordingly, do not bend. This means that the operation of the engine itself is practically undisturbed. In addition, it is very easy to maintain due to the fact that its design is identical to the engine from the VAZ 2108 (except for the increased volume). And to increase maneuverability and reduce fuel consumption, some drivers order chip tuning (firmware of the electronic control unit).

The question that causes the most controversy. Officials talk about a mileage of 150,000 km before major repairs; some have traveled 200 thousand km or more without problems. I have a friend who already had his engine repaired at 40 thousand km because the timing belt broke. Yes, the engine here is “plug-in” - this means that if the timing belt breaks, the pistons meet the valves and you can see the fist of friendship.

Studying the forums, based on my own experience, I can say that it all depends on how you will operate the engine. The most banal thing: the quality of the oil (choose correctly) and engine operating modes - this is what the mileage before you need to do major repairs depends on.

I bought a Lada Granta FL with engine 11182

I had two cars - a Lada Kalina and a 2014 Lada Granta in a liftback body. I did the math and realized that maintaining two cars is too expensive. Yes, and I wanted a new car. Kalina was already 15 years old, and the Granta was 7. At the same time, the Granta did not require attention to the chassis, but did require attention to the anti-gravity thresholds. And besides, it was equipped even without an electric booster.

I thought about it and decided to take a new grant, from the showroom with 0 mileage. My desire just coincided with the transition from engine 11186 to 11182. On the first day after purchase I drove 200 kilometers. I specially went out onto the highway and began to leisurely run the car in, I didn’t drive more than 93, thereby irritating everyone around me. Another 2800 kilometers will need to be driven in this mode. When you don’t do it on purpose, you only have time to change the oil. And here another 2800 km seems like an eternity.

Impressions from work 11182.

As I already said, I had a Kalina with a 21114 engine with a heavy piston and a Grant with an 11186 with a lightweight piston. There is a huge difference between these cars. 11186 was better in everything - the car was more dynamic, accelerated better, and it was easier to overtake. Like 21114, he did not eat an ounce of butter. Strictly looked after 5-6 thousand from replacement to replacement. This engine was also much quieter than the 21114.

After the first 200 km, I realized one thing - 11182 wants to go. He "rips" you out at traffic lights. It starts moving after lightly pressing the gas pedal. The Granta is a lightweight car and the 11182 can make it a very sharp car. However, 11186 was also very playful, but here you can feel it from the first kilometer.

Is the 11182 engine quieter than the 11186? In the salon - yes. But there may be one nuance here - the Shumka in Granta FL may simply be better. I also want to draw attention to the slight vibration at XX. You can feel it. On the street I don't see much difference between these two engines. As for me, they rumble, plus or minus, the same.

The standard howl of the 2181 box has not gone away. How she howled and howled. The same howl was on the first grant, the same howl on the new grant. In principle, it doesn’t bother me, I’m already used to this howling. At 1000 km I will change the oil in the box. Then I will do another oil change at 3000 km, after break-in.

ZIC 75w-85 did not change the sound of the box on the previous grant. There is no need to try to fix this with oil.

As for the engine oil, it is at maximum. The oil is still very light, so you are unlikely to see its level in the photo. But I was able to see the level.

Another nuance is vibration in the cabin from the engine. 750 rpm is no joke. Vibration is felt at XX. At the same time, the engine runs quieter, but there is vibration. By the way, they have already written about it on the Internet.

After work, I ran another 200 kilometers. In total, I have already driven 430 km. There are no complaints about the gearbox or engine. Except of course the signature howl, which will never be fixed. The most interesting thing is that I had a Lada Kalina and there was no transmission noise on it. A friend has a Lada Priora and there is no transmission noise there either. How so?

I have no complaints about the dynamics. The engine pulls very well.

I paid attention to the factory sound insulation. It turns out that the doors and roof are noisy from the factory. Unlike the 2019 Granta Sedan Classic Optima, which had no noise at all. This grant has sound insulation and you can feel it. The doors are heavy and dull.

I have no complaints about the engine's performance, I have complaints about the gearbox. Well, I had them on my previous grant too. Why the hell is she howling? Why didn’t she howl on the 2006 viburnum, but she howls on the 2021 grant? How does this happen? The car came out with extras of 650,000 rubles, and it also came with a howl as a gift. The questions are actually rhetorical, the box works, everything is fine, if there were no howling, everything would be great.

Traveled 1500 km. In the morning I checked the oil level - at the maximum. For 1500 the oil did not eat. It just got a little darker. Already makes me happy. The dealer said it was filled with semi-synthetic. Don't know.

Today is an interesting day - we need to change the oil in the engine and gearbox. In general, I planned to do this for 1000 km, but circumstances were such that there was simply no time. So I changed today.

Price list for oil change at the office. The dealer is not happy - almost 800 rubles (yes, I was not mistaken), 300 per box. In my previous cars I filled Mobil Super 3000 X1 5w40 and Lukoil Genesis Armortech 5w40. But since Lukoil went crazy and in a year rose from 1400 to 2200 rubles, I decided not to buy it, but to buy Mobil, which, by the way, has not risen in price by a ruble.

Just in case, I took a quality certificate from Mobil and was ready to show the vaccination certificate if they didn’t want to let me into the repair area.

But everything worked out. They let me in without any questions, only made me sign the safety instructions and gave me a short briefing.

The master did everything carefully, even I didn’t change the oil like that on previous cars. Just great!

The gearbox was filled with LADA Ultra 75w-90 semi-synthetic. In fact, this is Rosneft 75w-90. Not a bad oil.

After driving 1500 km, the factory oil was light, I thought it would be worse. After changing the oil, the rear one began to turn on much easier. Owners of this box will understand that reverse gear is a pain. Overall there are few changes. Howls the same way :)

There is nothing you can do here, just increase the idle speed to 840, as it was before. I don't see any other options. I'm closing the topic with vibration)

Mileage is about 3200 km. The run-in was completed. I drove 1700 km using Mobil Super 3000 5w40 oil. The oil darkened slightly, the level remained at maximum. There are no complaints about the engine, it pulls well, overtakes well, and with air conditioning it drives great on the highway.

As for the gearbox, everything is the same. Howled, howled and will howl.

Traveled a total of 5500 km. No, I'm not a taxi driver. It's just summer and we have to travel a lot. I'm very pleased with the car. Acceleration, dynamics, ground clearance - everything is on par. Consumption according to the on-board computer is on average 7 liters, it feels the same as on the 11186 engine.

The oil level has dropped slightly below the maximum mark, but this is nonsense. This is most likely due to constant driving on the highway at speeds of 100 km/h+.

The engine has become noticeably quieter, that's a fact! Apparently everything worked out. The box also became quieter. No, the howling has not gone away, but before it was in almost all gears, now only the second. The howl is much quieter than on my previous grant in 2014, which ZIC 75w-85 oil did not help and which I definitely won’t be pouring into our cars anymore.

I'm pleased with the package. You don’t need to do anything other than little things. I am 100% satisfied with the stock music. Parking sensors in the rear would certainly be a plus, but the car is small and visibility is good. I park it 30 cm from the fence easily and without parking sensors.

The car has traveled 15,000 km. Passed the first MOT in my life. I paid 4,100 rubles for the work, and this took into account that the oil was mine. Lew Lukoil Genesis Armortech 5w40. For the first time I added 200-300 grams to the engine after 7000 km. This is most likely due to highway mileage at speeds of 110 km/h.

The engine runs quietly, there are no extraneous sounds (except for the clutch).
